Review: The Plough Inn, Kelmscott Nestled in the picturesque village of Kelmscott, The Plough Inn is a gem of a pub that seamlessly combines rustic charm with a fresh, renovated look. From the moment we walked in, the warmth of the place wrapped around us, enhanced by the cozy ambiance of a crackling fire—our dog especially appreciated the spot right by it! The food was delightful, with a standout dish being the pumpkin and mushroom risotto. It was rich, creamy, and well-balanced, truly hitting the spot for a comforting lunch. Each bite was a testament to the kitchen’s attention to fresh, quality ingredients and well-executed flavors. But beyond the delicious food and welcoming atmosphere, what truly made our experience special was the service. Vincent was a fantastic host, going above and beyond to ensure we felt at home. His friendly and attentive approach added a personal touch to our meal, making it memorable and inviting. If you’re looking for a welcoming countryside pub with exceptional food and service, The Plough Inn should be at the top of your list.

One of the worst roast dinners I have ever had. Firstly there was no draft beer and this is a pub! Secondly the door was left open and being late October it was very cold. The tables were packed so tight together that you had to turn sideways to get through there was no privacy and you could hear exactly what the couples were saying either side of us. The waitress didn't check in on us to see if our food was okay (which it was not) she had to be reminded to bring the wine menu. This is so disappointing as it used to be a favourite place to eat to be served undercooked dry roast potatoes and generally under par food with little service. Our table was not cleared away after our main meal and therefore we asked for the bill having had quite enough of the lack of service. Our table was still not cleared away when we paid for the bill, suffice to say we will not be returning .

Lovely cozy pub, great food Slightly expensive, lovely Comfy room and bed, the only drawback, the pub closed It doors on Sunday Monday and Tuesday at 6 in the evening. The nearest place to eat and have a drink at that time was 3 miles away.

We had a wonderful time at the Plough Inn. A lazy afternoon spent in the garden, drinks and tasting all sorts of Cotswold Gin in a Tin, learning about William Morris (we missed the manor tour unfortunately) and a fantastic dinner in the restaurant. Our room was lovely, cozy, quiet and warm. An all around wonderful experience with genuinely kind and engaging staff. We will be back!!!!

Friendly, busy pub. Lucky enough to have the weather to sit outside and have lunch. Good recommendations on the drinks from the gentleman behind the bar. Nice menu for lunch time lighter bites or larger meals. Plenty of choice and the food was lovely, lots of people with dogs sitting outside and well provided for outdoor seating. Not sure how big inside was as I didn’t go in, but would probably recommend booking ahead for bad weather days if you want an indoor table. If I am in the area again I would certainly return.

I stayed at the Plough in Kelmscott for a couple of days in order to visit Kelmscott Manor, just 5 mins walk away, and explore the Cotswolds. I really enjoyed being there - I was made very welcome by the extremely friendly and cheerful staff, Vincent, Joanne and Brian. My room was pretty and comfortable, with lots of big white towels, and a powerful shower. It was spotless and well-equipped, including some extremely nice olive shower gels, etc. The pub had a lovely atmosphere - flagged stone floors, a friendly small bar with lots of locals (not just tourists like me), and a garden at the front where I had dinner both evenings. There's also a restaurant at the back, and everything I had was perfectly cooked. There's a little car park at the back but plenty of parking along the road at the front. The village is very small and there is no through traffic so it's a very peaceful place to stay.

Recently stayed at The Plough for a business trip for 2 nights. Beautiful setting for a traditional English Inn, rooms were well decorated and furnished with a very comfortable bed. The bar is great and the menu offered plenty of choice with well presented dishes. The staff are friendly and make you feel like a local. I'm back next week and looking forward to my return visit.

We walked the first part of the Thames path and stayed at The Plough inn. It is a lovely old inn, full of character and has very comfortable rooms. The best breakfasts we have ever had and delicious dinner too. Dennis and Vincent and their team are lovely and the chef is amazing. Nothing is too much trouble. Of course Kelmscott Manor is well worth a visit and was a short walk down the lane

We stayed here last night for my birthday weekend and thought The Plough and its staff were fantastic. We were warmly welcomed by the staff and shown to a beautiful William Morris themed room. Everything was spotlessly clean and very comfortable. We had a meal in the evening which was superb, and were looked after by a lovely S. African gentleman. This morning's breakfast was again superb with lovely fresh ingredients and the young lady who served us was lovely. Hope to be back!

We visited The Plough on two consecutive nights on the basis of reviews and because we could walk from where we were staying in Kelmscott. Neither experience was great. First night we both made the mistake of having the Double Gloucester cheese soufflé. Let's just say this was not what we expected a cheese soufflé to be. It was more like a steamed pudding in a bowl of cheese sauce with grilled cheese on top! Neither of us could finish it and it gave my wife such bad indigestion that she couldn't eat any of her rather greasy chicken escalope main course. Avoid at all costs. The second night we both opted for the steak frites. This was passable but the meat had obviously been standing for a while as the beure café de paris on top was not melting, it was so cold. We were hungry so couldn't be bothered to send it back but we did query it as the plates were being cleared. The message came back from the kitchen that "there had been no delay". But that just sums the place up. The waiting staff had no idea what they were doing and took an age to do anything. We ordered sparkling wine as an aperitif (once I had found the wine list for myself!) and this was left for several minutes where we could see it going flat before anyone bothered to bring it to the table. We ordered wine to go with the mains and we had to ask for it again as we were at risk of finishing eating before it arrived! To summarise, set your expectations low and you might have a nice time - and avoid the cheese soufflé.

Great base for walking a few miles of the Thames Path - even if it was flooded at the time (the river that is, not the pub) - and spending a day in Oxford. Although nearby Kelmscott Manor is closed in February, we will be back for a visit. The Plough Inn is a beautiful 17th century pub with excellent food and with comfortable, recently modernised bedrooms and en suite bathrooms. As a veteran of many UK B&Bs this is undoubtedly one of the best.

The location and style of this country inn are wonderful. The service was also good. However, the food was very mediocre and disappointing. We both had Sunday Roasts and the ingredients were fine, but it was clear that everything had been prepared well before service as all the vegetables were greasy, overcooked and dried out. I suspect that they had been plated for at least an hour and then left on a hot plate. Such a shame! Also, why do pubs insist on serving Yorkshire Puddings with every type of meat? To my mind, it should only accompany beef and not be so large that the rest of the food is completely hidden.

Myself & my husband visited whilst staying on holiday nearby. When we arrived it was quiet but so welcoming! The fire was lit & we had the restaurant area to ourselves which was beautiful to be able to sit and chat. We had 2 courses & shared a pudding as the portion sizes were great we were unable to finish a pudding each. The food was so tasty & great value for money. We loved the friendly feel of the place & it was a bonus that it was dog friendly. If we had found this gem sooner in our break we would have gone back again! Really do recommend The Plough Inn!

We decided to eat out on a random Thursday in January, with our 4 year old. We therefore ate early, and the pub wasn’t very busy. However, the host was very welcoming and put the fire on in the restaurant just for us. She was very attentive and the food was delicious. I had the rabbit pie which was just fantastic, the addition of fennel seed on top added a lovely flavour and the rabbit was juicy, not dry. Accompanied by lovely gravy and perfectly cooked greens. My wife’s fish was also very good and tasted very fresh and light. We have frequented many times before for drinks but never for food, but we now look forward to exploring them menu and popping by for lunch. Overall, a delicious meal that was really cooked and clearly wasn’t run of the mill reheated food that so many pubs are serving up to save costs nowadays. We look forward to returning soon.

Everything was clean and well kept. The pub was closed as from 18:00 on sunday, monday and tuesday but as there are enough other places nearby to get somethng to eat or drink this is not a big issue. On the days the pub was open we enjoyed the food and drinks in the beergarden and it was heaven. Staff was very friendly and made us feel at home. Turned up on a Tuesday lunchtime looking for a drink while walking the Thames Path. Pub looked fabulous. The main door clicked shut and was locked as we approached. Told at the side door to the bar that they were shut until 3 and that a pint and a glass of wine was not possible. Thought rural pubs were struggling and might be keen for custom. Did however get an excellent pint at Ye Olde Swan at Radcot a few miles downstream, where the landlord was very welcoming.

Slap bang in the middle of nowhere is this little gem of a pub/restaurant ...and it is worth travelling to!End of a 16 mile hike we had a couple of well-kept beers, reasonably good dinner (fish and chips in a nice, light batter) from a menu that's perhaps just a little limited when you are a starving carnivore, and then more excellent beers before a comfy night in a quirky, clean, tasteful room with views of the pretty garden. This amazing country pub is literally in the middle of nowhere. A lone road from Lechlade leading to Kelmscott Manor would get you to this pub. We sat outdoors in the garden which was pleasant. The staff could not have been nicer or more accommodating. I arrived on the very first of lockdown when the chef was doing a (very tasty looking ) outdoor BBQ. They all went out of their way to make sure I was looked after, the food was delicious and they even got me soya milk for a cup of tea. The chef even made made a beautiful and beautifully presented curry that night despite it being completely off menu. I'd booked a single but they upgraded me at no charge (and without mentioning it). The room, and the pub, was everything you hope a country pub will be (and if you have long hair, the toiletries come in 200ml bottles so plenty enough). I couldn't recommend them highly enough and I'll be sending friends and family including the most demanding of London foodies. The pub is very close to the Thames Path and the village is beautiful. We booked this hotel as a birthday treat for my wife’s birthday. The Inn is in the small village of Kelmscott and includes a first class restaurant which really was five star quality in both service and food. The staff couldn’t have been more helpful and the food was very well presented and tasted fantastic. My wife’s Belly Pork dish in her words was “the best I have ever tasted” and our friends who dined with us said likewise. Our bedrooms were very spacious and tastefully furnished and if there was one fault it was that there was no tea/coffee facilities although you could get one in the bar whenever you want. The assistant manager said this would be looked at for the future. The Asst Manager was also the person who talked us through the gin tasting session and was very knowledgeable and extremely friendly. Visited with 12 friends for a delicious New Years Eve dinner. I think it’s fair to say everyone in our group was impressed with their meal. Every plate was scraped clean. I chose the sweet potato curry along with 4 other friends. Deliciously sweet and creamy with plenty of chunky mango chutney on the side. My only complaint would be that it was so tasty I wanted a bigger portion. Most of us also had the chunky chips on the side which more than delivered on crispy chunky fluffy-ness. Other comments included: -The fish and chips was tasty however a bit too small. -pork was delicious and cooked perfectly Other highlights included a delicious apple tarte tatin which two of our diners said was the best dessert they had ever eaten. I had the Eton mess sundae which was full to the brim and so very light and creamy. I particularly liked the strawberry ice cream on top. Very soft and sweet. Another diner had the apple crumble which he said was good and plentiful however the crumble could have been packed a little tighter. We also asked for lots of ketchup and mayo with our mains, which I thought would come in tiny ramekins, however we were pleasantly surprised with very large bowls of more than enough condiment. Ideal! Service was pretty quick and adequate, however I wouldn’t say it was service with a smile. Not unfriendly-but also not hugely friendly. They definitely seemed as if they would rather not be working in New Year’s Eve....can’t blame them as I wouldn’t either.I would return every week if I could afford it. The extensive menu has plenty of very tempting options plus at least 3 vegetarian options (more than usual). Sadly they don’t quite cater for vegans yet however I wouldn’t expect that from a pub in the middle of a village.

Had walked past whilst geocaching before so decided to make the short trip on Sunday for lunch.Parking at a "premium" and not great on this wet day. Service and welcoming staff excellent and the ambience equally pleasing. The food was well presented and tasty starting with Calamari, followed by the Beef Roast (wife) and Roast Belly of Pork for myself all of which were excellent.Pricing not cheap but not silly either and for the quality we had, good value and I would recommend giving The Plough a visit. Some interesting walks around the village on a nice day and the Thames walk neaby. We retired to the bar for a drink after, a lovely area my only downside was a handle on the pommel horse seating ( which is highlighted on their website) is dangerously loose which given the shiny/slippy leatherseating, could be a potential mishap. The private room which can be booked for parties looks nice and also potential company meeting place say for year end lunch etc.

We stayed here for one night whilst checking out hotels and restaurants for as possible venues for our walking group. The reviews sounded great but the reality didn’t live up to the scores. The accommodation was good with nice rooms and a comfortable bed, but there was no tea or coffee in the room or even a box of tissues - pretty basic expectations these days. The evening meal didn’t start well with two of our choices being ‘off’ and then the appearance of a spider on our friends starter caused great alarm (well handled by the server once we had killed it for her!). The mains were poor. None of us enjoyed the dishes and the fish pie had just two tiny prawns and a single flake of salmon in a dull mix of white sauce and potato - one of the worse fish pies I have had in years. The breakfast was ok; The was bacon far too salty and the fruit compote was in early stage fermentation. The server was very pleasant. The restaurant area was an environmental disaster. Although a lovely room, it was blighted by the underfloor hearing which was far too hot (unbelievably, there is no thermostat to control it). This meant that despite it being the end of November, the doors to the bar and restaurant were opened to let in cold fresh air - meaning the heating was probably working even harder and burning through electricity- a total waste. An instructive visit, but we shall not be booking to come back with our group.

Booked a two night stay when attending a workshop and visiting relatives.Location perfect; room comfortable and décor pleasing; food in the restaurant was good – the cheese souffle a favourite. However, the first night, a Friday, was completely marred by the constant, intrusive, relentless level of noise from some machine which did not vary in tone or cease all night. Ear plugs are provided but we do not expect to pay £140 a night to be forced to use them. At midnight we found an empty room, where the noise was less intrusive and managed to get a few hours sleep, and decamped to that room the following morning. The noise was still present on our return Saturday evening – but it was turned off around 10 – and all was finally, nearly quiet – still a boiler could be hear not far away.Such a shame as this is a delightful location and the staff were very pleasant.

Took our order the second was better but again we had to ask for everything, wine lists , condiments , chasing to get drinks. The food was okay, not as good as sounded , lacked seasoning for me , I got the bill that for the quality of the food I thought high.Maybe was an off night, the place is lovely looking and they were busy, but I wont go back , below average food at too high prices served by a miserable waitress on a terrible table isn't for me.I know our friends were a little embarrassed.

Stopped in after a visit to Kelmscott house. It was an absolutely scorcher of a day and it was the perfect spot to stop for a drink.

Have come here whilst on holiday for the 3rd year in a row and as usual, it didn't disappoint. Lovely atmosphere, very friendly staff and the food is very good. Only slight thing I would change is to have more than one veggie main meal. Sitting outside on a sunny evening was just wonderful, so relaxing and pleasant

It’s a great location and a genuine “old school” pub. Good atmosphere in a rural setting. Service was pretty good but when showers set in we moved inside to be told that much of the restaurant was “booked out”. Funny, no one showed up in the next hour.

Popped in for lunch at the Plough Inn. Not been here for a while and we’ll certainly be back again soon. Fantastic burgers, lovely wine in a beautiful country setting and the service was speedy despite being very busy (and super fast WiFi). I have to say the garden looked fabulous with pots of flowers everywhere - much better than I remembered it being and lovely to see so many fabulous dogs enjoying the sun in it - they must have someone who really cares about the garden looking after it now.

I booked a table and reserved a room overnight for my husbands birthday. After reading the reviews I emailed the Plough on 12th April asking if I could have a room at the front of the building as had heard that it can be very noisy at the back. No response - nothing. We were due to go this weekend so thought I'd ring to check and they'd put up at the back and wouldn't move us. Now I have to find somewhere else to go - thanks for nothing....They didn't even offer us a free dessert by way of an apology for the oversight. It was take it or leave it attitude. I'll leave it thanks!

Eight of us had a fantastic Sunday lunch sitting in the beautiful garden. The manager Tim was really helpful finding us a table big enough for our party and we received great food and service and would definitely recommend. The roast lamb was delicious as was the vegetarian pie and the burgers which others in our group had. It's such a beautiful location and we had a most enjoyable couple of hours.

Stopped by here while on the way to Kelmscott Manor at the other end of the village. Couldn't resist the inviting pub garden at the front of the pub located by the old village crossroads - especially in the warm Easter weather. Staff were welcoming and they had a good selection of ales on tap. The food was great, I had a delicious pork belly sandwich which hit the spot nicely. Would certainly visit again if I was in the area.

We stayed here for one night to break up a long journey. This is a great country pub, restaurant with lovely rooms. The staff are very friendly, hospitable and friendly. The food quality is very special and the restaurant and rooms are very stylish. There were no tea and coffee facilities in our room but they brought us early morning tea when we asked. Breakfast was excellent, served in the old bar. We will stay here again for sure.

Visited on a fairly busy Saturday evening and thought both the food and the service were excellent. This was our second time visiting after we’d enjoyed our first meal here several months ago. This time I ate the pie, which was delicious and came fully encased in pastry (as pies should be!) with plenty of filling. My wife’s steak was also very tender and tasty. All in all an excellent evening and will certainly be visiting again.

We took a French friend to supper on a Saturday evening. This restaurant/pub is generally reliable and we all ate and drank well but I need to report that the calamari, the partridge and the monkfish scampi were all over-cooked to the point of being dry for our taste and I do accept that the French like their food to be still running around the plate.

We have not been to this Pub for some years, despite some good experiences in the past. So when we decided to go for a walk along the Thames Path in this area we chose to return to the Pub for a post walk lunch to see if it could meet our expectations in 2019. We were not disappointed.

Formerly owned by Lana & Sebastian Snow, successful pub entrepreneurs providing great food, this small, remotely situated pub has been sold to the Barkby Group PLC this year (2018). NB The new owners have also bought out the Snows two other pubs: The Five Alls at Filkins, and the Bull at Fairford (the latter was tenanted).

Very welcoming pub /restaurant. Lovely decor, typical country but crisp and cosy. Been here a few times now and each time has been a breath of fresh air. Great staff, quality food, good variety on the menu, decent house red and tempting puds. Value for money too; no surprises when the bill arrives. It’s a must stop of you are in the area as you won’t be disappointed.

We travelled here with 3 other couples for a two night stay. Arriving at lunchtime we sampled their sandwiches of cracked pork on treacle bread with fries which was delicious. Our room was lovely and warm overlooking the back of the pub, parking can be a bit of a nightmare if you arrive at lunchtime as it is a busy pub. With regards to the room only two little negatives, only 3 hangars in the wardrobe and no tea coffee facilities in the room, you can request tea at the bar which can be brought up to the room but would have liked the facility in the room. We ate in the restaurant for the two nights and all meals were delicious.we had a lovely weekend and Andrew the Manager really looked after us, would definitely return.

The pub had a delicious choie of bar snacks just right for refuelling after a morning walking the Thames Path. The sausage rolls were delicious and filling; pigs in blankets very tasty and ham and eggs in an unusual mustard sauce took this pub favourite to another level. Good cider and beer on tap and excellent coffee. Great atmosphere, good welcome and recommended.

Arrived at 11.50 for a refreshment break on my walk. Ordered a pint of Old Hooky and asked whether I could order food. Not until midday the barmaid retorted as the Chef would not be pleased if she put through an early order, sounds like he was recruited from Fawlty Towers. Anyway by the time we had finished discussing it was 2 minutes to 12 and she agreed to take my order! Given the close proximity to midday I wonder why it was such an issue. Surely take my money and put the order through a few minutes later rather than a involve the customer in what transpired as a pointless discussion. The pork onion and apple baguette with fries was delicious and had a very enjoyable lunch in the garden in the late summer sun before resuming my walk.

We have just returned from a one night stay at the Plough and it really is a hidden gem. Our room was tastefully decorated, the bed was very comfortable and we loved the REN products in the bathroom. It was a shame that there was no bath and that bathrobes weren't provided. There is no kettle in the room but you can get tea from the bar if you like. We had a late Sunday lunch at the restaurant and the food was excellent and the service was charming. Breakfast was great the next day too. We will definitely be back.

We called ahead to the pub as we needed a camper stopover close Brize Norton. The landlord Dave was incredibly helpful and we were able to make use of the ample flat car park at the back of the pub for the night we needed. The facilities in the pub are first class and service was excellent - Dave went above and beyond to make our stay an absolute pleasure. Staff and locals were all friendly and welcoming to us. We were lucky it was ‘vinyls night’ so were treated to some great music while we were having drinks in the bar. Highly recommended, I’m sure we will be back soon

We loved it. Perfection location and the quintessential English pub. Outstanding food and service and the ambiance, decor is so wonderful. The highlight of our Cotswolds trip. Near to Jeremy Clarksons new pub as well so this little area is the perfect spot for a weekend spent in the pub. Well done Swan.

First timer and the experience was five stars all the way. I had the meaty breakfast which was brilliant and fresh and loads to eat. My daughter had the avocado on toast with a beautiful poached egg. Again it was excellent. We loved the decor and vibe of the cafe too. Service was superb and it really is dog friendly too. You must visit.
