We were staying in the area so we thought we would come for dinner Friday evening when we got there it was pizza night. We walked in and it was so busy at the bar and it all felt very impersonal. We had our food which was good however we weren't asked if our meal was okay and if we needed anything. I know it was extremely busy but please don't lose the personal touch. Felt more like an hindrance and it was expensive for 2 of us.

Mothers day. 9 of us and Storm the dog had a lovely meal and time here today celebrating mother's day. The staff could not have been more helpful , even making garlic bread for young Luke. And a takeaway meal for 1 mum was ill at home. Just a shame there was no beef left fir me but the pork more than made up for it. Our dog Storm lived the cracking. Our 2nd visit and we will be back. Thanks 👍

We had Sunday dinner at The Plough to celebrate a family birthday and the ages of our party ranged from 3 to 84 years old. The atmosphere was lovely - a proper country pub feel. We had starters, mains, kids meals and sweets - all of which were delicious. Everyone in the party enjoyed their food. I particularly liked that on a Sunday there was an option other than a roast. Portion size is extremely generous - the pies are huge! The staff were friendly and accommodating. We look forward to returning

Came for Sunday Lunch yesterday with our 4 children, after an afternoon of fishing the Basin. There was a lovely atmosphere, everyone was smiling and very chilled, this was brilliant considering how uptight some people are about the Covid situation, although obviously all distancing and hygiene measures were followed, they were done with a smile! Brilliant play area for the children, climbing frame needs a few fixes (planks loose on bridge etc) and zip on trampoline is broken, but regardless of this, the play area was well equipped and very exciting for the boys! We rest enjoyed lunch, it came quickly and the portions were large and everything was hot and tasty! Will definitely be returning (possibly tonight as it happens, just the two of us As going to attempt to catch a pike again!). Highly recommended! Thank you x

I lived in the village as a child and have fond memories of the pub, learning to play dominos with the old boys in the snug, winters around the fire listening to village stories, great place.....that was 35+ years ago, I often return to the pub and for the past few years it’s been shocking until a couple of months ago, the new management have nailed it! Food is excellent, atmosphere is great and if you have a young family the play room / area is brill. The best news is that although it’s had a top to toe make over, the snug is still the same as I remember as a child and there are still dominos! Been again today for Sunday lunch and the beef fell apart in my mouth, very reasonable pricing and super friendly too, love it, bang on!

We t today for Sunday lunch, two of us had the chicken pate with pickle, and the other garlic and stilton mushrooms it was delicious X however the pickle we had to ask for and rather a lot of pate but not enough bread , two of us had the lamb and the other the beef, it was absolutely beautiful, it melted in your mouth lots of veg and so much on the plate I couldn't fault it at all and I will be going back and recommending to everyone I know. I just have a couple of constructive criticism , before the next course comes out cutlery should be on the table ready, and instead of putting gravy already on the plate it should come in a gravy boat so customers can put it on as they like it to be . Not everyone likes to have a lot of gravy all over the plate so it should be the customers choice of how much and where it goes. Good value for money and a lovely setting I will definitely re visit x

We were saddened when this most English of village pubs closed recently. We always enjoyed Nicola's cooking and found everything about the pub to be pleasant, comfortable and enjoyable. The nearby walks along the canal were a bonus. So now a new chapter begins with a new owner. Yesterday I had lunch with a friend there - with some trepidation! But we needn't have worried. The place is much as always - a real English village pub; and the food was splendid and, with special prices for lunch, beyond a bargain at under £11.00 for three beautifully cooked courses. The pies are excellent and the Eton Mess was, well - I almost ordered a second helping!I do hope the pub does well now. Hickling, with the Grantham Canal on its doorstep and wonderful walks, deserves a thriving village pub! Good luck to the new owners.

We were worried. Having had a v-e-r-y lacklustre Christmas meal at a pub in nearby village, should we order turkey again? But the waiter recommended it, so we did. Well, it was fantastic. The turkey was moist and tender and the vegetables were all perfectly cooked and so very tasty. Each ingredient was somehow better and different than normal - all had been given a very "cheffy" touch. The dessert equalled the quality of the main - a truly tasty, fresh damson and apple crumble. The value here is second to none. Thank you to the chef and our waiter.

So, this is just a review as pub as we didn't (couldn't!) eat.The pub is in a cracking spot to do a canal walk, and that's exactly what we did. We rang the pub in advance to make sure that we could park there early doors and that food would be available. Both answers were in the affirmative.Ten miles later we were back and hungry....just to be informed the chef had called in sick! At this point many reviews would have a flounce and score 1. But..I guess these things happen. We tried 3 out of the 4 available ales, being Black Sheep, Bass & Broadside. All were well kept and absolutely excellent! The pub has a couple of levels, and we sat in the brighter upper level. I don't suppose that bar has altered for many years! I enjoyed it.

Food was good however the customer service let the evening down a lot. The food order was taken wrong, understandable. We were charged for the more expensive one, unsure of the difference, I asked about this that was met with the manager being rude and giving us the 50p difference. Not a singular apology, especially with one of our meals arriving when the others were about finished. Ordering deserts was met with more rudeness from her and the whole interactions tainted our evening. After a few times of visiting here we won’t be back as would feel uncomfortable with her service again.

This place has fallen off; it used to be our go-to for Sunday dinner, but the food has taken a nosedive and needs some TLC. Half of the tiles are off the wall in the toilets. Parking has always been difficult here, but it doesn't help that they now have a food truck occupying four spaces. The only saving grace is that it still has excellent service.
