You can see from the mixed reviews how people’s experiences have varied so much . We can only speak as we find and for four visits over four years our experiences have been really good. We have been able to pre order and pick ups have always been on time . Fish and chips were admittedly a bit pricey on our latest visit but taste and portion sizes were spot on .

Had to be the worst fish and chips I’ve ever had at the coast. We ordered Haddock and got Cod - the manager a rude lady threw the returned fish across the takeaway towards the bin - engaged in an argument first with my partner and then with myself - chuntering and generally being obnoxious. 2 fish - 1 chips a bread cake and 2 mushy peas That’s £30 - I wouldn’t mind if we are talking the best in Devon. This has to be the worst ! To an entrepreneur- open a chippy in the town and blow this lot away - look at the other reviews - it’s scandalous what they are charging and what they are offering. We may be visitors but we are not mugs - and should be treated with respect. They need competition to understand what running a business means. Will never touch it again - Awful. Not a good reflection on Salcombe.

I was visiting Salcombe and was recommended The local fish and chip shop, overall was a nice experience with a helpful worker on the till, good portion size and food, However the whole time whilst ordering my food a worker with white hair was staring at me, I asked if he was telling me something but he turned around. This continued as I was across the street but luckily service time was fairly short and I was able to leave I will be coming back next summer!

The worst fish and chips we have ever had - despite being amongst the most expensive. Chips tasted dry, like reheated school dinner chips and the cod was all grey and mushy. All for the princely sum of £11.90 per portion of medium cod and chips. Completely inedible. If someone were to open a decent fish and chip shop in Salcombe they would make a fortune. In the meantime avoid this "Plaice" like the plague. We shall not be visiting there for supper again.

They are only still in business because they are the only chippy in town. The chips they buy were clearly the cheapest they could get there hands on and then they sell them for an absolute premium yet they taste disgusting. The cod was soggy, not crisp, made the chips even worse. I only had a child’s portion and it was extortionate. They are running a business in a prime location in a busy town, it begs belief that they wouldn’t try and serve something to be proud of.

Visited this take away w/c 21/9 during stay in Salcombe and have to say they were the worst chips I have ever tasted, horrible taste and dark unappetising colour, one of my companions is a chef and assumed that the oil used was old and had not been changed and that they were possibly oven chips. The fish wasn’t too bad but at approx £68 for six portions of cod & chips very overpriced to say the least. How anyone can say this is the best fish & chips they’ve ever had is beyond me, steer clear!

Decided to have a takeaway evening and opted for Fish and Chips at The Plaice, despite a recent review. Should have paid attention to the review. If only I’d read the reviews on here before going to The Plaice... Ordered a cod and chips and 2 battered sausage and medium chips. After the long wait, our food was served, I questioned the portion of the chips as the portions were so small but was assured they were ‘medium’ size. On opening the box all I can say is what a huge disappointment, the frozen chips were disgusting and lukewarm, my children said the fish wasn’t good, so much so that when we got home I had to cook them something else to which they said “at least this is proper food, not like from that horrible chip shop”...... The battered sausage was edible. I was expecting a treat from a seaside fish and chip shop but was left very disappointed. Also, was amazed to see that NONE of the staff wear hats/hairnets, would have thought this was a must when working with food??All in all, a total waste of money. We were in Salcombe for a week from Good Friday and hadn’t booked a table anywhere so thought that we would get some fish and chips from this takeaway as the easy answer. I expected it to be busy but was surprised by the number of people waiting for their food when I arrived to order. I ordered one cod and chips and one fishcake and small chips and was told it should be ready in 20-30 minutes. It was actually nearer 45 minutes before I could collect my order which I did on the first time my number was called. We were staying 5 minutes walk away but when I got it home we found it very disappointing. The fish was a small portion which was smothered in a not very pleasant batter which had made it look like a much bigger portion. The chips were extremely soggy and seemed as though they had been out of the frier for at least 30 minutes to have been so unappetising. My wife had the fishcake which she said was OK. I would have thought that with the volume of orders they were taking ensuring that the chips being sold were freshly fried would be very easy but apparently that is not the case.

Was really looking forward to fish & chips at the seaside but this was a massive disappointment! Paid over £15 for 2 cod, 1 medium chips, curry sauce and some pop. The cods were tiny, much smaller than a usual mini fish and they were £5 each; and I'd have mistaken the medium chips for a small the box was tiny and not enough for 2 people to share, just about enough for 1 person. Chips were average tasting, fish was nice tasting but dripping in oil. Curry sauce was not the nicest. Had to wait ages for food and we were still hungry after eating due to the portions being so small. Absolute rip off. They'd sold out of ketchup too and were selling bottles for £2.50, but wouldn't open one to sell small portions to customers. Who wants to buy a bottle of ketchup? Especially for £2.50... No queues still waited for ages, then narrowly avoided someone else being given our order only because after they had sprinkled salt and vinegar on the customer realised it was wrong. Fish was ok, I think we must have been waiting for this, as it was the only thing remotely fresh. Sausage was dripping with oil and the chips were diabolical, even seagulls would have turned their beaks up at them. Rubbery isn't the word to describe them. Limp, stale and reheated at least 2 times with a charisma akin to Ed Miliband. As for portion control...we were supposed to have a large, I'd hate to see the small portion. Small must be about enough to fill a tea cup. Shocking. They should stick to fish and leave the chips to someone that knows what they are up to. £9.40 for large fish, large greasy sausage and large (just about medium) limp duff chips - not good.

We were looking for a snack lunch and popped in here. We ordered BLT and ham baguettes with chips. All was served up within about 5mins. Both very tasty and the hand cut chips were lovely too. The staff were happy and like us there were several families in there too with small children. Toilets upstairs if you need them.

The fish and chips were cooked to order and very tasty! Price was reasonable but a little annoying having to pay for ketchup!

A good traditional fish and chip restaurant. Be nice if it was licensed so you could have a local cider or beer, but not a massive problem. Nothing fancy, just good old fashioned food!

I am not one to complain, however, after finding a fly in one salad and a hair in another I think it was appropriate to make the staff aware. The manager seemed totally unwilling to take responsibility for the problem and seemed reluctant to even offer a refund, however I was assured that I could have had another salad....... Yes like I wanted another salad after finding those two beauties.Food wasn't the worst but the staff need to consider their customer service.

My husband went to take away fish and chip shop which we'd visited years ago. Very disappointed by the size of the fish which to be fair was tasty but batter was a bit thin. The chips were dry! Never had dry chips before! Everything was barely warm 10 minutes later. Maybe wrapping them in the old fashioned paper might have insulated them more. Have had better fish and chips in The Kings Arms and the Fortescue Inn in Salcombe and would prefer to pay extra to eat there. Come on Salcombe surely you could have a decent fish and chip shop! Will go to the Cod Father in Kingsbridge next time.

Nice portion of haddock, freshly fried, reasonably priced. But why, oh why do you serve those awful skin-on chips? Chips are easy - just peel the potatoes, fry and watch them fly out of the door. Sort it out and get 5 star reviews.

Our children had a takeaway on good Friday. We had to wait 25 minutes for their food to be served and when it came the portions were tiny, the chips were like oven chips and the fish was greasy. Other people in the queue only wanted chips and had to wait similar times. My husband and I were going to go back and have fish and chips later, but didn't bother. We fo u d a good chippy a few days later in Knightsbridge called the codfather, which we would recommend. Come on salcombe get a decent chippy!

The Plaice offers the option to dine in but we went for takeaway instead, electing to sit and watch the boats from the slipway opposite. There was a good selection of fish (grilled, breaded or battered) as well as the usual chip shop alternatives (pies, pasties, scampi etc.) and all of us enjoyed ours (the plaice was particularly good, as you might hope given the name of the establishment!). For such a well-established seaside resort, I was surprised that there weren't more eating options in Salcombe but for fish and chips by the seaside, The Plaice is a good bet.

At the time of our visit, they were only open for a couple of evenings, but we were tempted in by the fish platter advertised outside. Amazing value at £22 to share, with very generous portions of whitebait, squid rings, plaice goujons, prawns, onion rings, and chips, served with three different dips and bread and butter.

We just went to buy a large chips to go with some chicken we had prepared. The chips were boxed up and we walked 1 minute home. When were home, just up the road, we opened the chips and the portion was only half filling the box and were cold. We went back to the shop immediately and asked if this was the correct portion and she rudely exclaimed " No that is the normal portion! " and then we asked if they could be heated up and she said " No we already put salt and vinegar on! You will have to microwave them " outrageous!

Visited Salcombe today and feeling peckish decided to buy a portion of chips to share with the Mrs. We were disappointed to find that they were no more than frozen supermarket chips thrown in a deep fat fryer. Wouldn't mind so much if they hadn't been so expensive. We will bring sandwiches next time we visit as we wouldn't waste any more money here!

Waited a good 10/15 mins for these so was expecting quality quality fish as they'd probably put it in the friar for me on request. I was probably correct with the friar but everything else ruined it. The Mushy Peas were far too pale and runny. They were tight on the chips but that was ok because they were bang average too. All round just left really disappointed.

I have never eaten in the restaurant, but I once a year at least get takeaway from the stand alone shop a few doors down. The chips are always excellent, it's often busy, especially at peak times, but the service is pretty quick. The staff are friendly too.

We got a takeaway two doors along. How this place has a queue of people outside I will never know! Disgusting to say the least and way overpriced. We ordered two kids meals and two adults meals and that cost us £28.00 including a drink and some ketchup. Well whatever it's being cooked in is unpleasant to say the least. It was boiling hot yet it was soggy and bendy? I think some reheatings taking place here. The chips we all agreed didn't taste nice and we all felt quite awful after eating it. I left half of mine anyway. My sons batter looked burnt. Honestly I've had much nicer in london!

I visited the property on Sunday morning only to find I was first in ( this was around the 10:00hrs mark).I ordered a full English breakfast at the counter (£6.95 approx) only to find it didn't come with tea or coffee, which I had to pay extra. Staff seem a little hesitant to help or offer advice and when a couple of other people came in,they were met with the same approach.Food came and it wasn't the best, maybe it had got fed up in the kitchen and should I have left it untouched on my plate on the table, it would have made a break for freedom and been much happier!! Eggs were a little over done and I left approx 35% of the food untouched, shame really as the location is ideal to entice customers, who enter the town, as its really the first eatery you come across. Understand they do fish and chips also but, to be honest, I'll not be trying those.

We have visited the Plaice today and ordered 2 grilled cods with chips. We were assured that it was a fresh catch of the day... Iceland frozen fish more like. Absolutely tasteless, clearly made from frozen, and judging by the chewy edges, probably microwaved. We were hungry and tired and stupidly have eaten most of it so it was too late to complain. The restaurant was empty, it should have been the first hint. The whole meal was awful, even chips were horrible. Not what you would expect in a coastal town.

We visited Salcombe and thought we would give this place (pardon the pun) a go. We ordered our food, cod and chips x 2, haddock and chips X11 and 2x fish cakes and one chips...... £26.30!!!!!!!. The time was on the receipt and it took 27 minutes to get served as it would seem they "Cook to order".... A fish and chip shop cooking to order at 13.30 on a busy/sunny July day! When the food finally arrived it wasn't quite worth the wait, but it was very close. the chips were skins-on and were cooked to perfection. The cod/haddock had a crispy light batter, the fish did not break any records in size but was good quality. In short, long wait for small portions that tasted average in terms of the fish and above average in terms of the chips....Overall overpriced,,,,,,

Ok, so they sometimes close early, there are often queues and the chips have some skin on, but really, these are great, FRESH, fish and chips. The food isn't cheap, but we're talking about a seaside town here, the majority of custom being seasonal tourist trade - they don't open in the winter as far as I know, so charging a pound or so more than some people are used to for fish and chips isn't a crime. I very much doubt you would pay less in any other similar location in Devon, Cornwall or even in London.Anyway, the cod is excellent, the batter light and the chips are plentiful. For those reviewers who felt that the portions were small, there is an option to purchase a large portion of chips.Battered sausage, mushy peas and curry sauce all up to scratch. Be prepared to wait ten mins or so as all food seems to be cooked to order. Will always venture here for takeaway when in Salcombe. Haven't eaten in the cafe though but the food seemingly comes from the same fryers.

We visited the Flavel for the screening of King Lear direct from London. This was superb but the cafe wasn't open when we turned up and we couldn't even get a cup of coffee during the twenty minute break as only alcoholic drinks or two soft drinks were available at the bar. It didn't spoil our evening but we needed the caffiene at the time and couldn't get it

Strange but quaint place to get to. Be prepared for a staircase, a handrail on both sides, and you'll need it to, to climb upstairs. Once upstairs, we were approached by a smiling member of staff, who said, "Sit where you like." The floor slopes, but once seated, it seems you forget. We all had Devon cream & jam scone with a cup of coffee each. Wow, the scone freshly made earlier, was warm. It just melted in your mouth. Once you got the jam & cream on, or is it cream & jam. My aunt & I had a latte & my husband & uncle had a cappuccino. Stand carefully for the loo, you may fall. There is only one unisex toilet. We paid and left. Back down the staircase again....the restaurant is above a shop, which is situated by the museum. Not for disabled people..though I made it with my walking stick. No car parking.

Awesome. Don’t judge a book by its cover. I arrived late evening for work over a couple of days. The staff couldn’t have been more welcoming and helpful from getting me a taxi late evening at the train station to helping me get to my work venue in the morning. I had arrived past restaurant hours but the staff were more than happy to prepare food if I had wanted. I was also given a local delicacy from a local. I’m normally a poor sleeper but slept so well. Whilst the rooms at first appearance look a little dated the bed is so so comfy. The room also spotlessly clean. The question is - what’s more important to you - a great nights sleep or a sterile environment with mod cons? Sadly the first morning I didn’t have chance to sample the breakfast- I didn’t have time to wait. They have a sign saying ‘We don’t serve fast food. We serve fresh food as fast as we can”. Suffice to say I ordered my breakfast for the following morning before I went to bed so it was ready for me when I needed it. Now for the highlight DINNER. I eat a lot and this is definitely one of the best meals I had in a long time. Not the usual processed pub food. The main(stuffed chicken with root veg and dauphinois potatoes was delicious. I never order dessert but felt I had to - the main was so good. The sticky toffee pudding did not disappoint. Overall a really great stay. Thanks so much
