Another great find on holiday. Warm welcome and quickly seated. Drinks arrived quickly and have been waited in hand and foot. Food: 10/10 and some serious freshly cooked food. Calamari - amazing Scallops - amazing Gammon, eggs, baked pineapple - best Iv ever had (thank you to the barman/weighter) who even went to find out how thick the gammon would be! Pork, pots, crackling - just out of this world Deserts - couldn’t fit it in All staff were amazing and we even popped back for a drink the next day to soak up this great atmosphere. 10/10 for sure and deserves to be on Michelins star or at least on the Michelin star guide.

Had a lovely meal here this lunchtime, HOWEVER the management here are awfully rude to their staff. The poor young girl behind the bar was being spoken down to by her boss, which clearly made her feel very uncomfortable. Not only this, the whole of the restaurant were watching this making everyone feel very uncomfortable! Nice place to eat don't get me wrong, but lessons in basic staff management and communication need to be learnt very quickly. The staff all seem to be changing very quickly, and maybe this is the reason why? I would love to hear the thoughts of The Pig and Whistle on this?

Visited here for Sunday Lunch, good quality food let down by the meanest portion of vegetables I have seen for a table of 4 - it would have just been OK for two, and even then less than generous; we asked for another potion but that only gave each of us two slices of carrot! Not good value at £16-17 pound for a main course.

They sure know how to do Sunday lunch here ! This traditional olde worlde country pub has a warm cosy atmosphere, and the staff are equally warm and friendly. Our starters of goats cheese, beetroot and salad with balsamic dressing were beautifully presented and highly delicious. We each ordered the turkey roast, which helpfully comes in two sizes - a great idea ! I must say, despite ordering the “small” size, our meals arrived in mighty generous portions, which we both struggled to finish… but it was so good, finish we did! (Heaven knows how big the large portions are !) The meals came with mountains of side vegetables and lashings of gravy. It was all beautifully cooked and seasoned. If you ever have the chance to visit this delightful pub - go ! We shall be back as soon as we can visit the area again.

We visited as we were staying in the local area. We have a nearly 2 year old so going out for dinner isn’t something we do much but as we were on holiday we wanted to try and go out together. And we were so glad we did! We didn’t book but we had a very warm welcome and were shown to a table straight away. The food was absolutely delicious, great portion sizes and a varied Little Piglets menu for our little piglet. We all thoroughly enjoyed our meals and the staff were very helpful and friendly. We also met the chef at the end who was very kind to our daughter. Such a lovely little pub, we came home and wrote this review straight away as we are keen to support local businesses and give them the shout out they deserve! We will definitely be back one day, thanks so much :)

Me and my lovely wife were driving along the road and were keen to have something for tea. The traffic was a nightmare so we pulled over at the pig and whistle. Proper pub, well maintained, cosy yet warm and inviting atmosphere. Service friendly and prompt. Food was absolutely delicious. I had steak and kidney pie and chips. My wife had roast pork and mash potato. Proper hearty filling meal at a very reasonable price. Any commuters going to or from Totnes, and everyone else, I'd totally recommend this lovely traditional put. Definitely coming back again!

We visited the Pig & Whistle on the last evening of our Devon tour. We wished we'd gone sooner so we could go again! The aesthetic is cosy and rustic. We were welcomed by the very friendly staff who laid a table for the three of us plus 2 dogs - including complimentary dog biscuits! My husband had Prawn and smoked salmon cocktail, which was packed with fish with a beautiful tangy cocktail sauce. He ordered the Whistler chicken, which was a beautiful dish with a side of steaming hot veg and dauphinoise potatoes. I had the mushrooms with bacon lardons, which was beautiful. This was followed by the blackened cajun chicken, served with salad leaves, homemade coleslaw and chips. It was a really tasty dish and the best chips I've ever had. Crispy on the outside, fluffy on the inside and nicely seasoned. They were so much better then the hard, dry chips, or triple cooked over done chips a lot of pubs do. My daughter had tempura prawns she said were beautifully light and tasted great. She had the steak and ale pie to follow and said the flavour was rich and comforting. She also loved her chips. The service was quick and helpful, I wish this was our local gastro pub! Please open one in Scotland :-).

Such a shame because the Sunday roast was really nice but massively let down with the service and rude staff. When the roast came out we asked if we could have some more vegetables as we were only given 1 piece of broccoli each and 2 little chopped up carrot pieces and 2 spoonfuls of cauliflower cheese between 4 of us which we were told by a very rude member of staff that this was enough for 4 people. We waited 20 minutes for more vegetables to come out and by that time our food was cold. When our food came out my partner and brother ordered a beer each to enjoy with there meal which never turned up. We were never asked how our food was and then it took over 20 minutes for the bill to come.

After making a table booking, we arrived to be told rather abruptly that we were late...not exactly busy so wasn't as if our table could have been taken. It was Father’s Day and the place was full to the brim. We had a somewhat ‘hemmed in’ table in the corner next to a party of 12. Which was a bit of a struggle, 2 of us had to move to get 1 out, the food arrived after an hour and a half wait and by this point we’re all getting pretty hangry! However … considering this was probably one of the busiest days of year, when the food finally did come out, I’d like to say it was very good, we all had a roast (they offer a choice of either large or small) Pork Turkey Lamb or Beef or vegetarian, the beef was the best I’ve had in years, the Pork was pretty good too. The veg was okay, they forgot the leek n cheese sauce but brought it when we reminded them and I’m glad they did cause that was delicious. Due to the lateness of our food, they were very happy to consider a discount at the end in way of an apology. I don’t very often write reviews but I am today because what started as a bad experience was turned into a decent meal out and I wanted to say thank you for letting us leave with a feeling of content!! The staff all worked very hard and I’m pretty sure that they’ll all be exhausted after this busy day. 😌. We will go back and I will recommend because I’d like to try more of their menu and delicious food for sure, just next time when it’s less busy. Ps the Garlic mushroom starter was superb

My food portions didn't look huge when served, but after eating a starter and a main I didn't have room for a dessert. That said, my partner's Ploughman's was massive and I 'had to help her out with it'. Nice varied menu and interesting specials board. Well this has gone downhill… visited tonight. One of the first ones in there. We travel 3 hours and always go to this pub regularly. The service was slow. We were given a lunch time menu however the menu just said ‘£10 dishes Monday to Friday’ so we weren’t actually aware when ordering and no one mentioned it either. The ‘manager’ didn’t tell us, he said ‘I’ve catered to you but it’s the lunch menu’. This was as he brought the food out, we would’ve happily ordered off the main menu if we were told the one we had was a lunchtime menu. The meals were the same as one of our kids meals if not smaller. Disappointed this wasn’t mentioned during the 50 minute wait for the kids size ‘adult meals’. Then to be met with said ‘that okay?’ Not like we had a choice and were starving by then. He was also rude about my daughter saying they had no penne pasta so she had to have tagliatelle and saying ‘she can make a real mess then’ and rolled his eyes. was also trying to joke about the kids being ‘hangry’ and loud, because my daughter was crying as we waited almost an hour for food. As we left, my partner used the toilet. He walked back into the restaurant to them clearing our table stating ‘that was a vile table’ and laughing about us. I called the restaurant for an apology to be met with ‘your choice to order off that menu’ even though we weren’t informed it was a lunch menu.. They all denied saying anything when I called to ask for an apology over what we had heard and were argumentative and rude. Trying to say he was recording me? For complaining they were being vile towards us. Everything was heard by my partner and point blank denied. He was very rude on the phone accepting no responsibility, only blaming us for their mistake. Wont be back again but used to come regularly on holiday for years and years. Was also told ‘ you can make a formal complaint but Donna and Phil won’t beleive that’ I’m assuming they’re the owners? Not too sure but very extremely disheartened and let down.

Excellent experience from booking to eating, ended up being 30 mins late for our booking due to a cow herd on the moove, they were super accommodating, friendly and a good laugh! Hard to find theses days! Food was fab, well worth the 2 hour journey we will be back. Many thanks. Pic for evidence.

Absolutely fabulous Sunday lunch, celebrating a special birthday. 11 of us and we all had yummy roast dinners. Loads of veg. Hard working staff were friendly and efficient at a very busy time. Lovely touch of a cupcake and candle for the birthday boy.

My family (8 adults) visited the Pig and Whistle today for roast dinner. I had a delicious nut roast with miso gravy, the rest of my family had beef, lamb and pork, and everyone commented on how tender the meat was, also there was a great range of fresh, perfectly cooked veg. All the puddings were yummy and just the right amount (not too big). The service was good, especially the super friendly welcoming bar man. Previously I have been here and had an average/good experience, today I felt there was a real improvement in the quality of food and cooking. Thanks to all the team...we had a great evening!

We have been here a few times but not since lockdown. The staff were very helpful, chatty and friendly. What more can you ask for? We were greeted by dog biscuits on the table. A nice touch, as a dog owner sat in the bar area….The food was top notch for pub food - I knew it was going to be good by the standard of the soup (that had been passed (if you know, you know))…. Had a £10 lunch offering of veg lasagne - honestly, it was superb. Not stodgy, gorgeous sauce…my husband had their pie, full of meat, and said it was excellent. Customers who were paying were saying how good their food was and were there because of recommendations. I don’t review unless I have an excellent meal. Think we might go back next week. You won’t be disappointed.

First visit having driven past for forty odd years. Very impressed with the food - my husband chose the £10 'small plate' lamb roast: no way could it be described as small! Three slices of tasty lamb, Yorkshire pudding, roast potatoes and 4 veg. He was one happy man! I chose the prawn sandwich and it was one of the best I've had - lots of prawns and lovely fresh granary bread. Couldn't fault it. Staff were friendly and efficient. We'll be back.

Lovely roast dinner. Custard with pudding came in a jug, with a very small amount. Requested more, which eventually came. Seating a bit tightly squeezed in, but overall a good experience.

We stopped here on the off chance. What a great find! Staff very courteous and helpful. Huge menu of locally sourced ingredients. I chose tomato soup plus toasted cheese sandwich, absolutely lovely. My husband had the green Thai curry. Lots of chicken in this and he said it was delicious. Great big carpark and lots of seating.
