The Pig and Butcher is a wonderful traditional ‘proper pub’! The staff are so warm and welcoming - it is a great pity that there are so few of these hostelries to be found! We had a quick lunch there last week - just a pint and a sandwich. The bread was so fresh and tasty and we loved the addition of crisps and a salad! The pub is under new management and there are all sorts of activities going on - quiz nights and a pancake night. My partner loves his Harvey’s pint and said that the beer was excellent. You can’t go wrong here - loved the wood burner in the bar too. We shall go again for Sunday lunch - the landlady, Maria is an awesome cook!

My wife and paid our first visit to the Pig and Butcher Pub, Five Ash Down Uckfield., after a recommendation from a friend. W reserved a table for two, looking forward to a Sunday lunch. We were greeted by two extremely friendly members of staff, one guided to our seats. The restaurant was spacious, comfortable with good natural light. We both had our drinks, I had an excellent pint of Harvey’s bitter, my wife a glass of white wine. The food was very good, and plentiful (too much as it turned out,it was suggested that we took a ’doggy bag’) The roast meat was delicious, and succulent ,accompanied by a good selection of well cooked vegetables. My wife had a desert of caramel cheesecake which she said was mouthwateringly good. All in all a very enjoyable experience, and a a reasonable price. Highly recommended. We can’t wait to visit again. Thank you Pig and Butcher.

I always dread pub roast dinners. Not to ring my own bells, but I make the best roast potatoes in the world and my children always balk at soggy pub potatoes. The potatoes at the Pig & Butcher were perfection…crispy on the outside, fluffy on the inside…perfect. Coupled with beautifully cooked meat, amazing choice of delicious vegetables, oodles of thick beefy gravy, perfect yorkshires, fab & speedy service & friendly, helpful staff…what’s not to like? The puddings were also amazing…again too many places sell you a chocolate “brownie” that is overbaked and is actually nothing more than chocolate cake. The brownies were dense, rich and the perfect texture; the treacle tart was amazing (our only complaint would be that we should have ordered more as it was so moreish!); even the ice cream was sensational quality…our daughter commented the strawberry ice cream “actually tastes like strawberries”. Even the prices were reasonable…it’s not fancy gastro pub, overpriced designer food…it’s good, honest pub grub, well cooked and eaten in a friendly, vibrant atmosphere.

They don't do their usual food menu on Sunday, just a carvery option which looks sightly makeshift at first sight at the side of the restaurant area. However don't let that put you off. Meat selection was beef, pork or chicken with the usual selection of veggies & accompaniments for a traditional Sunday roast. Now this is not Michelin star fine dining - but for the price it was excellent value with the food fresh, hot and served with smile. And the pub was not overstretched at 1:30pm on a bank holiday weekend - an added bonus. One note of caution: as the standard menu is not available I'm not sure what options are available for vegetarians.

We'd had a bit of a duff carvery elsewhere a few weeks ago, so I wasn't going to have another, but as we went past the joints and veg on the carvery I though 'Oh!' and had a sudden change of heart. A fabulous choice, all cooked to perfection. I've a good appetite so went large, and for £1 more it's daft not to (In my opinion). My Wife has a gluten, wheat and dairy intolerance and chef accommodated this without any ado, providing some separate veg and gluten free gravy.

Having been a regular at 'the Pig' for several years it was sad to see it slipping in quality a few months ago - mainly due to the changes of chefs and inconsistency. However, I'm now extremely happy to report that having had a superb Sunday carvery there today it is back to its old standard (or even better, thanks to new chef Craig). Apart from the meat (gammon, lamb or beef) being cooked to perfection the vegetables consisted of red cabbage, roasted parsnips, cauliflower cheese, broccoli, carrots, swede, crisply roast potatoes, and, of course, yorkies. A word of advice though - if you are planning on Sunday roast it is best to book if possible - by 1.30 today it was packed!

We've lived in the village for 30 years and have seen this pub go through the good times ... and the bad. 30 years ago the pub was a freehouse run by the owner and very successful. When he retired, his son took it over and continued in the same vein. However, he sold it to Harveys brewery and since then there has been a series of "managers". Inverted commas because some of them could not have organised a p.... up in a brewery. So this pub's reputation has been sliding inexorably down for a number of years driven by poor customer service. No one was dedicated to putting the customer first and they just expected the customer to come in and hand over their money then leave!

It is bad enough to get short measures when you are served by an inexperienced bar person. But when it is from the landlord who is trying to make up for his lack of takings and high overheads and misery at signing a lease in the first place it becomes too much to bear. I cm. equals about 15p multiply this by the amount of beer sold and he could make £1.50 per day. (on a good day)

We understood that this pub had been taken over and run by new management recently so we decided to check it out again. We booked, were met immediately and offered a drink at the bar or to go to our table. We chose the latter and shown into the pleasant dining area. There was only one couple in there, so it seemed rather quiet and empty. Also a bit chilly, as the radiators were not on. Pleasant wait staff, very friendly, and our orders came through quite quickly. I had lambs liver and bacon with veggies, but was a bit disappointed. I thought the liver was rather strong for lambs' liver, it came with tiny slivers of bacon, two small parsnip sticks, two rounds of zuchini, 1 floret each of broccoli and cauliflower and a large scoop of potato. I would much rather have had an "honest" serving of one or two veggies. But the really good thing as far as I am concerned is that it all came with a jug of gravy, which I thought was a really good touch. My husband enjoyed his macaroni cheese, but thought the sauce was a bit "thin". Desserts were very good: sticky toffee pudding (not too big) and apple and rhubarb crumble, which he said was delicious. A bit of a "curate's egg" meal, we thought i.e. good in parts. However, it was good enough that we will try again. I had hoped to have given this pub 5 Stars i.e. Excellent, to encourage the new owners after the recent tragedy there, so hopefully will be able to do so next time.

Although there are three pubs within walking distance which all serve food, I prefer to drive the 8 miles to 'The Pig' where I am guaranteed excellent food and service at a very reasonable price. Had an excellent pre-Christmas family lunch there and visit regularly for the Sunday Carvery. There is usually a choice of four roasts: lamb, beef, gammon, and chicken or turkey. The price depends on the number of different meats you choose, and there is a Senior/Child size for £6. There is always a fantastic choice of freshly cooked vegetables: today - apart from the roast potatoes and yorkshire pudding - there was carrot & swede mash, broccoli, cauliflower au gratin, chardonnay carrots, and red cabbage. You are always made to feel welcome by Emma and her friendly, efficient, team. Just one thing though - if you're going for Sunday lunch it's best to book a table in advance!

We came here a few weeks ago just after they started doing food again after the sad loss of their chef, the chef/owner (I think) on the carvery could not have been more friendly and kind which can be rare with landlords or chefs in country pubs. We were pleasantly surprised at how much choice there was of vegetables etc on the carvery and the meat portions were certainly not tight I would recommend going for the large size if you dont want to eat for the rest of the day :)

We had heard that after their tragic loss, this Pub was coping well, and we thought we would go and hopefully be able to support them, having never been before. We booked, were met by very friendly staff and seated in their pleasant dining area. For the first half hour, we were the only people there, but between 7.30 and 8.00 pm more people arrived. We had a good bottle of not-expensive wine, and we both thoroughly enjoyed our meal. We think that the owners are doing more than "just coping": whoever is now in their kitchen is doing a very good job and we are very to be able to endorse the Pub, its' staff and the excellent food.

After a break due to very sad circumstances I had an open mind regarding comparison to the previously excellent Sunday roasts. I had no need for concern - the food was superb. The choice of meats was Beef, Gammon or Turkey - all cooked to perfection and a good selection of vegetables. I particularly commented on the crispy potatoes and the sweetness of the carrots (not hard, tasteless and watery which I have experienced elsewhere)! The staff were amazing - it was obviously a case of all hands on the deck and there was brilliant teamwork in a packed restaurant. A big plus is the choice of 3 different sizes of meals. For the small size you have a choice of one meat for £6; with the regular size you have two meats; and for the large size it is three meats - and you help yourself to whatever vegetables you can eat!

This is the 3rd time we have been here in recent months..come last night ,thursday, with our New Zealand visitors who were most impressed with the delicious food, large portions and very reasonable price. After touring Ireland and Scotland they said it was one of the best meals they have had in the last 4 weeks...high praise indeed from a rather fussy couple.

The premises are clean and neat, background music is gentle and doesn't intrude. The menu is simple, yet with a good choice for all tastes. Particularly useful is the senior citizens low cost including a pud. Also there are childrens meals. The food is not microwaved and cheap but it is locally sourced and fresh. The chef does a great job, so that my wife and friends all enjoyed the time we spent there. Don't believe the bad reports that some have posted as there is nothing to moan about here!

Having arrived for a late lunch on a Tuesday we had the restaurant to ourselves but the food and serviced were excellent. We each had different courses: Fish mezze and meat mezze starter sizes and liver. All of which was excellent.

Visited here over the weekend with my partner and kids for lunch. We chose to sit in the bar instead of the restaurant although it looked very inviting, the food was delicious and just the right size portions. Staff were very attentive and helpful with fussy children. Great atmosphere! We have recently moved to the area and are so pleased we found this lovely little village pub.

Had a meal with friends for the first time at the pig & butcher, what a great night it was. We arrived to a warm welcome and showed to our table in the restaurant area. The staff were very attentive and the food was fantastic, wonderfully presented and tasted as delicious as it looked. We will be back.

Visited this pub last night with my boyfriend. He has been here before but was a birthday celebration a few years ago, but for me I had never been here. There was a band playing but because we weee eating we were more in the restaurant part so we didn't hear much of the music. The food was lovely, although there wasn't a huge choice of meals but I managed to pick something and it tasted lovely. For starters we both had the garlic bread with cheese which was very nice and added up to about 5/6 pieces each. We both had the same for main meals which was the homemade burger which was served with Salad garnish, chips, and onion rings. It all tastes lovely but was very full up after so unfortunately we didn't have time for a pudding but we did admire then coming out of the kitchen for other people to have. The Eton Mess was the one that looked the best. So we will be returning here again and hopefully we will both have room for puddings next time. I would definitely recommend this pub the drinks and food are fantastic!!

My partner and I love coming to The Hurstwood. Lenka and her incredible team go above and beyond to make every visit special and welcoming. I hosted my best friend’s (civilized) mini hen do here on a summer Sunday, and it was absolutely perfect. Recently, my partner and I came for a romantic celebration dinner, and from the moment we walked in, we felt completely at home. We were promptly seated and had a drink in hand within minutes. The wine list deserves special mention—it’s both exciting and thoughtfully curated, with a particular focus on high-quality, by-the-glass English sparkling wines. There truly is something for every palate and pairing. As for the food: We started with the focaccia, which was beautifully bouncy with a perfect crust. The game terrine, clearly made with the freshest local game, was delightful—a perfect portion size, too. For the main course, we had the local beef fillet, which was cooked flawlessly and paired with a beef cheek croquette and luxuriously creamy dauphinoise potatoes. To finish, we couldn’t resist the sticky toffee pudding. It was rich and decadent, served with smooth vanilla ice cream—a perfect end to an amazing meal. We can’t wait to return!

I try to see the positive in everywhere we go unfortunately that can’t always happen. My husband and I were passing yesterday and thought we’d stop for a bite to eat. It was around 11:45am. On entering the music was on, as was the fire - unfortunately we waited by the bar for a good 5-7 minutes before a member of staff (male) approached the bar area (looking at his phone). When he finally acknowledged us, I asked if they were serving food his response was not till 12 o’clock. My husband and I looked at each other and decided it was best to go somewhere that does want our custom. So unfortunately I can’t comment on food but the service and ignorance of staff member really let it down. The building looks beautiful, such a shame we didn’t get time to experience it.

the order just tasted like a flat white very little flavour and definitely didn't taste like golden caramel like it was supposed to. Will not be ordering again
