Had the most scrumptious lunch today after a morning’s volunteering in the forest school across the road. .we sat outside undercover ( there are heaters if needed !) in our wellies & enjoyed the £10 meal & a drink deal. Three of us had the fish chips & mushy peas & one had the mushrooms & poached egg on sourdough, all delicious. The fish was the best I’ve had in a long time, chunky white meat & crispy batter, we will definitely be back . Well done & many thanks for a smashing lunch . Best wishes Sue Matthews (Tabley)

We booked a table for 2 and sat outside ,it was a sunny day. We waited 50 mins for our food, I went into the pub to ask about the food and the waitress apologised and said she would go and see where it was, then I think it was the owner stated in a surly manner "its coming now".Greasy just warm chips, just warm peas, the fish was ok,but mine was very small. A very small white wine each , we didnt expect a huge one but a decent amount would have been nice. We ordered the meal and a drink for £10.each. We asked for 2 glasses of tap water and dicovered they charged us £2.45 per glass. We will not be returning.

We stumbled upon this place by accident while passing through Thelwall. We decided to stop for Sunday tea. My wife had a Sunday roast, which looked really good. She even said it was the best meal she had all weekend. I had the burger and fries, which were also very tasty. The staff were really helpful and friendly. If we ever pass by again, I'd definitely recommend this place over 'The Manor'.

Had a good Sunday dinner so thought we would try the weekday lunch menu. Ordered ham egg and chips and was told there were no eggs. Such a basic ingredient to run out of. So ordered the steak sandwich. Friends ordered the pie and the fish and chips. Pie and fish arrived but there was a mix up so I had to wait for mine. Pie pastry was rock hard and was left. Other two mains were ok. Friend ordered a Lanlords beer and was told they’d run out. Service was very slow. Had to ask for the bill twice. We normally tip at least 10% but couldn’t justify that on this occasion.

Oh no what happened, I really want the Pick to do really well. It's had a several changes of management recently and probably changes in bar staff and the cook also. We had a family meal here on 7th June 2024. The starter took about 40 minutes to arrive and eventually arrived with an apology. The garlic mushroom starter was ok. The squid starter was awful, it was like elastic bands, unable to snap and stretchy which is all due to being over cooked. They forgot to bring out the toddlers meal with our starters and didn't get it until just before our main meal. Which meant our 4 year old was waiting over 1 hour which is a big no no for children. They did apologise. We asked for some water for our dog from the main server but she forgot it. Another lady / manager saw the empty bowl and offered to fill it for our dog but she forgot it. Eventually another customer saw what was happening and went to the toilet and filled it for us (thank you customer) as we couldn't easily get away having a dog a young child and a baby Then the main courses arrived fish and chips for both of us, all the chips were awful including those with the child's meal, stodgy like old reheated greasy chips. The fish was poor, only partly edible and both of us left half of it. Even the garden peas were some cooked and some raw tasting. We had a large glass of white wine which was served very warm at room temperature on a warm day, they hadn't attempted to chill it even a little. Wet had to get a full glass of ice in it which completely diluted it with water and ruined the wine. It's such a pity as it was great under the previous management and we all want our local pub to succeed. We had already been pre warned by some locals not to bother going but we always like to try places for ourselves. Maybe the new team need time to settle in and get things right, come on Pickering Arms please make this a great pub with great food. On a positive note, the staff were lovely, friendly and welcoming. I would go only for a drink but would not eat here again unless others say the food has had a significant improvement. A huge positive is the pub is dog friendly. I hope things get better?

Staff were lovely, food was fine if delivered in random assortment, but the one thing that really let this down was the slowness of the food service. We'd both opted for beef dinner and the only veg that we shared was carrots. Otherwise each plate had very different options. A sign proudly proclaims "new management, new menu" but the state of one of ours suggests otherwise. We won't be returning to see if things improve.

Me and family called here after going to the Woodlands Alpaca farm on the recommendation of Suzie. We wanted lunch but the landlady informed us that they had an electrical fault and the kitchen was out of order. We stayed for a drink and I played darts with my 8 year old. The landlord and landlady appeared to have young children themselves and the landlord asked me if my little boy would like pizza and chips as he was doing their sons lunch as well. This was an amazing gesture and really appreciated, such lovely people!!!! The pub itself is lovely in a picturesque village and traditional inside with a massive seating area outside. We are about a 35 minute drive away but will return with my father in law when the kitchen is back up and running! Thanks guys!!!!

We had some shared starters, main meals and deserts - they were all fantastic. There were even some birthday candles topping my mums apple crumble - lovely touch. The chef, Jay, is amazing. Everything was tasty, hot and the right amount. Wine choice is also very good. We ended with coffee (the Baileys coffee was really good) done by Jack. Unfortunately I didn't get any photos but that just gives us an excuse to go back. Which we will do, and I'd have no hesitation in recommending The Pickering Arms to anyone - it really was a great night out.

On Sunday I went for a meal with my family, the service was not great due to new management and it being understaffed. We arrived at 15:15pm, we did not receive our starters for over an 1 hour which we had to chase up. The waitress explained that the chef was by himself in the kitchen, it then took a hour and half for us to receive our mains, when the mains arrived we had noticed the portion size were small and presentation was poor. My partner ordered fish and chips it was supposed to come with mushy pea's but only to be told that they had ran out, if we were told when ordering our food he would of changed his order. The presentation was not great it looked like the chips were thrown on the plate and a small piece of fish was on top, we had complained to the waitress that we were not happy due to noticing another customer had received the same meal but it was a child portion which happened to be larger than the adult meal. Our second complaint was the shepherds pie which came in a small tin and portion of vegetables to the side, again the portion size was small. The manager informed us that it was a standard size and that she had not received any complaints before with regards to this. Our family have been to this restaurant on numbers occasions before it was taken over and we have not had any issues prior to the visit. Due to this we will not be attending again which is a shame because the staff are so friendly. On a positive note the Sunday roast we received was worth the money.

It was in a bit of a muddle to be honest. We had to ask to place an order (after 15mins with no drink or food request), they brought the wrong main for one of us (50% failure rate) and tried to charge us £4 for the smallest cauliflower cheese you have seen. To be honest, I’ve seen more as leftovers going back to the kitchen. They had no stuffing and bread sauce for the chicken roast (it was early, so no excuse) had no trout (fish dish) and just seemed not quite in control. No wine cooler for the wine, dirty glass….. won’t go back. The table next to us also had a bill reduced as they waited 20mins to order a dessert. It looks great for a drink in the garden if you are out that way, but I would not rush for food.

Wasn't the best pleased last night been here many times and always been great. Last night 2 starters belly pork were very dry and over cooked. The pies were fantastic can't fault them but the Korean burger was very poor like it came out of a Birdseye packet and put in the oven. If you deep fry your own chicken fillets, please try it 1tbsp of salt to 1kg flour mixed, buttermilk your chicken breast, roll in the flour mix and pop in the fryer done when floating. (obviously probe it first) I have wrote alot of menus around the northwest and took restaurants from 2* to 5* (hope feedback helps) Also to add it was absolutely freezing, no heating on and log burner wasn't on. We come here for the warm atmosphere, it let us down last night as we brought 2 guests who hadn't been here before. Hope you welcome critic, as we love this place. Kind regards

The male working at the bar and the older lady working the restaurant side of things were extremely blunt, cold and looked as though they would rather not be there. Before ordering our food the lady repeatedly kept coming over and looking at us as though we were inconveniencing her by not having a choice - we felt pressured to order as some of these times the lady did not even speak but just stood there impatiently. It was a shame as the food was gorgeous and we would have made this a regular spot if it wasn't for the dull staff.

‘Wandering Wednesday’ this week took Hubby Neil and I to The Pickering Arms at Thelwall. A great Dog friendly pub. Starters: We had a board to share of 4 different dishes….. *Hummus, with ras el hanout, beautifully garnished with sunflower and pomegranate seeds….. accompanied with plenty of fresh flatbread. *Crisp Pork belly bites with red chilli, balsamic glaze and apple sauce to dip. *Salt and chilli Calamari with miso mayonnaise. *Large chicken wings, sticky goshujang, sprinkled with sesame seeds. Entrée’s: Neil had double Pattie beef burger (The patties cooked to perfection) smoked cheese, house sauce, with skin on fries. I had the Korean sesame seed chicken burger, (the coating was beautifully crisp and the chicken was so tender.) accompanied with Asian slaw and skin on fries. The fries were beautiful, crispy on the outside and fluffy on the in. Each of the dishes were absolutely faultless, so tasty, piping hot and very well presented, compliments and thanks to the chef….. we didn’t have to wait long at all, just cooking time, which is a good sign that all is fresh….. and it was! Both had a hot, pot of tea to wash it down….. good cuppa! Our server was a very courteous lady named Elise, this lady was very attentive, extremely polite, nothing was too much trouble, her service was always with a smile… The pub itself is Olde Worlde, with a big open fire which looked and felt very welcoming (Obviously it was down to the Fire Master who set and lit it!) The pub itself was absolutely spotless with many little nooks to take your pick to be seated at. The star of the show was ‘Bella’ the pubs dog, she is a black Cane Corso, soooooo gently, an extremely friendly giant pooch. It’s becoming increasingly difficult these days to find pubs that offer a warm welcome, good service and great food - but this one certainly does. Booked online for a table for me and my elderly black lab. When we arrived, our muddy paws were made very welcome from the minute we walked in. Izzy was spoiled rotten, offered dog treats and a bowl of water and given a blanket to sit on. Sunday roast and dessert were both really tasty and we both left stuffed and very content. The staff were attentive without being intrusive and everyone was very friendly. This was our first visit. It won’t be our last. Thanks all.

Food was good and tasty thank you to the chef. But service fell behind. And, if service wasn't good, atmosphere wasn't the best for us too. Some how don't feel that I want to go back there.

Late lunch/early tea. Food was superb. I particularly enjoyed the French Onion soup which was arguably the best I have ever had

Called in after walking the dog for the meal and drink for £10 and wasn’t disappointed. Portioned are just right for the cost. I had veg and chickpea soup which was really nice with a honey roast ham sandwich and a glass of wine, it was delicious. My husband had the ham egg and chips with a pint. We didn’t intend to have dessert but were relaxed and comfortable so had apple strudel and custard and I had the mini crumble with ice cream and a cappuccino. Well worth the price. Staff were very friendly and the atmosphere lovely. Will definitely go back.

Sunday roast was enough for a child, 1 carrot, 1 dessertspoon cabbage, no roast potatoes, bit of mash and weak gravy - terrible, don't go if hungry!!

We now regularly visit the Pick and always get a warm welcome from the landlady and all of her staff. A few weeks ago we had a Sunday lunch and the chef cooked two veggie roasts for us. I am confident not many pubs would do that. Quiz night on Thursday is good fun with Paul and Ian. Fantastic pub.

Have eaten here a few times years ago but never had a bad experience like last night. I had booked for 5 of us, friends who don't get to eat out together very often. We had a table big enough for 4. When we asked if we could put a chair on the end of the table, we were told no so I ate my meal sitting sideways on the end of the bench to give others elbow room. 2 of us ordered starters and were told one of the choices had run out. 2 ordered the double burgers which arrived without any garnish or salad. The roast dinners came for the rest of us. The 2 beef were tough and chewy and my chicken was awful. I was tapping it with my knife and it sounded like plastic! The potatoes were cold in the middle. The veg was carrot and cabbage, that was all. Very disappointed with the service. We had a long wait for drinks at the bar as there was only one person serving. We had to leave the table to find staff to take our food order. It came and we had to ask for cutlery as we all had our food and no cutlery. The waitress apologised and took one from the empty table next to us. There were not enough forks in the caddy so my friend had to get up and go to the staff station to help himself to a fork! We decided to avoid the desert! All in all, very disappointing and we won't be rushing back.

I had my Birthday party here and invited a lot of people, the team here were amazing and catered for everyone that came inc kids/vegetarian/grumpy old grandads. The food, music, drinks and service was second to none. I would highly recommend this place for all kinds of events, days out and just a quiet drink in the bar. Absolutely amazing.

We thought you could walk around the lakes, but it’s more for fisherman etc and you can’t go round the lakes. Walked through the cafe area plenty of seating outside and people eating lovely food. . T
