I have frequented the Horseshoe, Croft, on a number of occasions. On entering you may be forgiven for thinking that you have fallen through a time warp and gone back in time. Textured walls, high picture rails with plates balanced precariously, sixties style chandeliers (no bulbs) and that smell of a real pub which can only be achieved after years of beer being spilled on the Axminister carpet. If you enter from the front you are met by a low ceiling with olde world beams. To the left there is a paneled room and ahead a small bar. I always enter from the rear, as is my want, and I am, usually, greeted by four or five regulars, sitting at the bar like a Grumble Weeds Reunion. All give a welcoming grunt before carrying on complaining about things like life, body parts which are causing them pain or the price of cumquats in Aldi. The food is tasty and wholesome and there is a good choice on the menu. However, if you are a regular ‘Eater’ I don’t suppose it would take you long to tick all of the dishes off. They tell me that the squirrel in aspic is a ‘Must Have’. As far as the staff are concerned, I cannot speak highly enough of them. All very enthusiastic and helpful and willing to give a candid opinion on your choice of food. Likewise, the bar staff are extremely amiable, and I would like to give a particular shout out to Hannah whose smile lights up the room and who runs a very tight ship. There is a good selection of beers and other refreshing, fizzy, beverages and a cask ale. All in all a great little place, good food, good beer, great staff and a welcoming atmosphere. Unless, of course, you bump in to Peruvian Pete, the three fingered Poker Dealer from Wigan.

Traditional country pub inn with low ceilings and wooden beams which give the place a lovely atmosphere. There are areas in rooms of the pub with cosy corners and there is also a large room, for parties. This makes the pub larger than expected. The food was delicious and the portions were ample. There is a good sized car park to the side of the inn.

Visited for a beef Sunday roast and I have to say it was the worst roast I have ever had in my life. It arrived tepid warm so asked for it to be reheated which they did. It consisted of 1 small table spoon of mash which tasted like shop bought, sloppy and unseasoned, 2 small roast potatoes with a thick rubbery exterior that was difficult to cut as though they had been reheated in some way several times. Flavourless carrot battens and spring cabbage and very little of it. Two slices of beef cut so thin it resembled beef you would buy from a deli counter for sandwiches. The crowning glory was the charred overcooked Yorkshire pudding. On the upside I enjoyed the gravy. I did complain saying the food was under par but I ended up paying £18 for it so as not to cause a fuss in public. I ate less than half and left hungry. Small portion, massively overpriced for what you receive therefore bad value for money. Will not be returning.

I arrived at the Horseshoe Inn after struggling to find a nearby lunchtime venue with an attractive variety of food on the menu. Here I found the true Lord of the Pies and am now a devotee! This first time I dined on his award winning Braised Beef masterpiece with Truffle and Parmesan mash and will definitely return to taste more and more. There’s also plentiful choice for vegetarian diners.

Very nice traditional character full pub. The staff are very pleasant, and took our orders in good time. Our food arrived soon after, the cod was really nice, as were the carrots and cabage. The only criticism I have is that the boiled potatoes were just about warm, verging on cold, and I am confident in saying that they had come out of a tin. The food is slightly over priced, and at those prices, I would expect fresh vegetables, well cooked and hot, and not out of a tin.

Heading for another pub when my sister suggested going to the Horseshoe inn as she had been before and the food was good. The kitchen was about to close, the lady behind the bar said if we decided quickly we good still have a meal We both had lamb burger and chips. The food was really good Staff really friendly too. We weren't rush with our meal. Glad we decided to go here. I live down south but would definitely go there again when visiting family

Visited today (Father’s Day 2023). Expected it to be busy. Plenty of reserved tables, but we found a table for two. Purchased two drinks but we couldn’t purchase a meal. No menu was offered to us and when my wife tried to ask for a menu she was ignored by the girl working the bar. So we walked out and took our custom elsewhere.

Not a great experience here I'm afraid. I usually love calling for an impromptu drink at a country pub in passing, but I certainly won't be in a hurry to visit this one again. It was a Bank Holiday afternoon, there was 1 table of people eating, 1 table of customers with a drink and 3 young people at the end of bar so hardly busy. However, as the barmaid returned to the bar with a drink in hand, she proceeded to have a conversation with the 3 young people at the end of said bar about cats before even acknowledging we we're stood waiting to be served. The place looks like it could do with a good old scrub with some soap, water and elbow grease and the decor has gone way past the olde worlde, traditional theme, and just looks like it hasn't seen lick of paint since the turn of the century. Needless to say we didn't stay for another. The final nail in the coffin was when I went out of my way to return the empty glasses to the bar and say thank you and again the staff member didn't even raise her head from her conversation, If she hadn't eventually poured us a drink and accepted our money I would completely doubt that she would have been aware of our custom at all. Hardly the warm welcome one would expect from a smaller, out of the way country pub.

Checked on Facebook and their website as to when they finished serving food, both stated 9.00pm so I contacted them to book a table and was told that they would not be busy on the night (Monday) we wished to eat there the member of staff I spoke to never mentioned anything about what time the kitchen closed and I never asked as I'd checked online, we arrived at the Horseshoe at 7.50pm only to be told that the kitchen was closed for the night. We decided to have a drink before we returned to our holiday let, while we were seated a member of staff adviced a group of people on the next table to us that their starters were on the table in the other part of the pub. Discussed with the team and would never visit again and would not recommend to anyone I know.

We came here for a Sunday roast and it’s one of the best we’ve had. For starter I had the chilli pork bao buns which were amazing and my fiancée had the chicken liver pate. For main I had the ham roast and my fiancee had the trio but I ended up having the beef as was too much for her both meats were cooked to perfection. For dessert I had the chocolate brownie with honeycomb ice cream and my fiancee had the Manchester tart which was a massive portion. Both meals were very nice and will happily return. Total bill with drinks was £81
