The Phoenix in Spelthorne

Celebrated my birthday with a large group of family and friends. Food was reasonably good especially the pie, garlic prawns not that good, but overall my evening was excellent. Service was very good and the atmosphere great so had a lovely evening. The only negative was the price of the drinks very expensive but as it was a special occasion didn’t affect the enjoyment of the evening. We have been to the Phoenix a few times before for lunch and it’s been very nice especially as we can take our dog. For a lovely setting and good atmosphere would recommend this pub.

Went for dinner and was placed at nice cosy table without a booking! Upon recommendation of the waitress I ordered the fish and chips and my friend ordered nachos. The nachos were average but the batter on the fish was inedible. Was asked early in the meal was all ok and said yes but the chips were just frozen and reheated and I could not stomach the batter! On collection of full plate said the batter was awful (greyish colour and rubbery texture) the waitress agreed. The manager then came over and asked why I said it was ok and that 4 other people had said it was fine, she asked if I wanted something else or some drinks, I declined food but ordered another 2 drinks, she said the meal would be deducted. When we got the bill not only were charged for the drinks at a very high price but she had deducted only £7 off the £17.99 fish and chips and was misc on bill when questioned she stated this was compromise. Very rude and terrible customer service by the manager the other staff were lovely however. Do not bother!

This is a lovely pub with a large garden that extends down to a dock on the Thames. The Sunday roast that I had was excellent, and the service from the staff was attentive without being invasive. The standard menu is also very good. I did not try the tapas, but will next time. It seems very popular. This is a dog friendly establishment so there are a few furry friends around, which is a nice touch. We will definitely be heading back in the near future.

Very disappointing. Viewed the menu on the web page but on arrival found the three best things had been removed, leaving a very limited choice. The Linguini was too spicy and stodgy. Lovely location, shame it was let down by the food.

Friendly staff, great location on the river, great food. I regularly order the tapas. The satay, patatas bravas and prawns are delish. I'm prompted to write this by the review I just read here giving the tapas a low score. I've brought several people here for the tapas on half a dozen occasions and they all loved it.

Lovely spot, nice garden, god awful tapas. Though I’d visit the pub again, I don’t think I’d bother with the over priced food if the “tapas” is anything to go by.

We booked well in advance and had to tweak the booking a couple of times. The staff were very accommodating then, and on the day. We were able to access our table early and order in dribs and drabs. The food was great and service good.

This pub is strategically located at the end of The Avenue in Sunbury Village and has a great view on River Thames. Food is delicious and service is fast and efficient. Really recommended!!

Lovely pub with lovely staff but the fish and chips were nothing like the photo. Chips were frozen! Not expected in such a lovely establishment Average score because of poor food! Sorry

Saw this place from the river and made our way over for early dinner. Service was exceptional and staff did all they could on food and drink recommendations. Kids were a bit chilly outside, but there are plenty of outdoor heaters.

Stay away! Food is overpriced & below par. The landlady is horrendously rude (maybe it’s the language barrier) dogs are allowed if you tie them up on a lead in the sun while you’re there - apparently one small dog tried to bite someone once. Not the only option in Sunbury fortunately

Went there for lunch with foreign visitors, today. The service was excellent, the food was fantastic. There was a confusion around the order. It was corrected without fuss. Although, our visitors could have been more gracious; the Manageress and staff responded with total professionalism. We will go back again, definitely. But won't take same guests with us next time.

Great tasty food, friendly staff and relaxed atmosphere. Reasonable prices and nice garden will visit again

We went here for drinks and a meal before going to a comedy night. The food was not cheap ( for pub grub) I had the liver and bacon and mash, which was just ok My husband had the fish and chips , over cooked chips and the fish was awful, the batter was soggy and yellow in colour . We sent the chips back and the next lot were not much better, so we asked for a refund . He didn’t eat any of it.

I haven’t actually been. I wanted to, but I’m in a wheelchair and ( in 2022 !) there’s nothing on its website about Accessibilty…. Guess what Phoenix? People in wheelchairs spend money too…. You might be missing out!

Brought 3 drinks for £22 then was charged £32 for exactly the same drinks on second round, they seem to charge what they feel like, £32 for 3 drinks in Sunbury is utterly ridiculous where do they think they are, central London, what a complete con, if there was an option for no stars I would have given them none,definitely will not be returning

Went in for lunch today and spent 50 quid on Tapas it was overcooked , Over fried and they get you to pay for it before you complain.

We reserved a table in the garden in advance. Upon arrival the staff were aware of our booking but said to take any table in the garden. We had two tapas dishes and a burger, the tapas was lovely but very over priced. The burger was pretty average. Staff were friendly enough. Lovely view of the Thames but wouldn't rush to return nothing stood out unfortunately.

Amazing food and lovely view of the river. Staff went above and beyond to make my birthday lunch a memorable one even bringing me out a cake with a candle and sang happy birthday too. Highly recommend this establishment

Went to the Phoenix Sunday with some crazy friends and had a lovely time the staff are so lovely and the dry rose was excellent house red not so good tbh will definitely go back a hidden gem

I love the Phoenix for it's riverside decked garden and choice of drinks, however the food left a lot to be desired. The menu seems to have changed since I was last there, not a bad thing in itself, however the selection of pizzas contained some interesting choices and the tapas I had was distinctly average. I had the chicken satay which was luke warm and a very much cheap, slightly gristly cut of meat. The sauce was nice and not too overpowering but due to the chicken I left a fair bit of the meat. I would return for drinks but not food.

Went for lunch on the eat out to help out Had the Burgers which were pretty average and glad it was £7 pounds instead of £14 thought it was overpriced, and not presented very well. Garden is very nice sitting by the river, but wouldn't want to sit inside. Won't be in too much of a hurry to go back

I cant recommend this place enough every time we have eaten here the food has been delicious. The staff are always friendly and really helpful to deal with. The steaks are particularly amazing.We got our steaks mixed up the other day husband has medium rare I have well done by the time I realised my steak had been eaten by my husband which upset me a bit and was funny however what stood out for me was the way that the manager there tried to resolve it and offered more food, it was really appreciated and we did not take the food as it was really out fault not the restaurants but the lovely gesture was there and for that reason we will always go back to the Phoenix and support their business through these difficult times.The food is delicious they must have a great supplier for their meat as it is always perfect and cannot recommend their food enough

Ok the Pub apparently changed hands decided to go as dog friendly.orderded drinks which was fine quick polite service then orderded food which tbink a bit overpriced for whats on offer had starter Brazillian taste Chicken wings which were overcooked hard couldnt taste any difference if they had been cooked normally was disappointed my other 2 companions had Fish and Chips enjoyed all be it the peas rock hard should have served mushey peas in my book myself and partner had the phoenix pizza and American hot pizza both were bland the hot pizza the only thing that was hot was the weather need to say we did not enjoy and there was so many flies about which was annoying although we took advantage of the promotion Eat out @ 50% if had to pay full price would have sent it back apart from this as mentioned bar service was good

This pub has gone from the worst pub in sunbury to the absolute best thanks to Flavio and Alice. It has a strong Spanish theme (the owners being Spanish) selling amazing tapas and washing it all down with a refreshing jug of sangria. It’s all been cleaned up and the garden looks great, so much colour with their gorgeous hanging baskets, with the added river location bonus you’d actually believe you are in the med. Have been there a few times since lockdown lifted and they are taking it seriously with lots of common sense rules in place. My pub of choice from now on.

Really missing it during lockdown! Was only saying last Monday to a good friend after having met first time under social distancing rules outside in the sun on the riverbank that under normal circumstances we’d surely proceed for a pint in The Phoenix - still obviously a dream! During a zoom video chat with old colleagues on Thursday when we all agreed to meet for a drink ASAP after lockdown I mentioned The Phoenix and even sent links to their website for further info on my fav pub in Sunbury! Have visited many times, last was with a good friend at the end of January 2020, going for a couple of beers and a bit of food, the burgers and chips were freshly prepared and delicious as always! In particular during the summer in nice weather the beautiful terrace they’ve got directly by the river Thames, even with it’s very own mooring for a boat, is a beautiful place to be. Lovely atmosphere in a truly ancient cosy old building, quality food and very friendly staff make it a very welcoming pub and their outside beer garden terrace hard to beat! Can’t recommend it highly enough and can’t wait for the day to come to enjoy it again! Hopefully before summer is over... let’s pray for the very best in these uncertain times.

Lovely pub. Friendly staff and warm real life fire. Disappointed in choice of wines. For an upmarket pub with upmarket prices they don’t have an upmarket selection.

The Phoenix has been revamped but it is still a very average pub as it has been for over 20 years. The beer choice is limited if you want something other than lager and the wine is poor quality - Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Grigio were both unpleasant. Tapas dishes are expensive and very average (patatas bravas were good though). All in all disappointing; I was hoping that it was going to be so much better than it is. Great shame that they have settled for mediocre which may explain why so few people were using it. I would like a decent local in Sunbury and this is not it.

Had a really nice meal here with 3 friends, the manager was professional, friendly and efficient. Food and drink was superb, service great and really made to feel welcome and valued. Thanks.

This place has been subject to many a bad menu... sadly..However it has been graced with a wondeful new team and they are serving up some insanely tasty tapas!! Great sangria and wondeful atmosphere...so happy this is my local!!!Thank you Fabio and team you really know great tasting food!!! We had a selection of 6 dishes between 4 and it was plenty!Patatas bravas.. prawns.. chicken.. calamri..mezzee of hummous,baba gonush and tatziki.. and a baked cheese!! Delicious with a jug of sangria!! We will be back!

Thought we would finally visit the local, we’d seen the menu on their website and was looking forward to a nice Thai meal. Unfortunately when we asked for the menu we were handed a very sparse menu and no Thai food in sight. We did eat and although it was nice I thought it was overpriced. Good points were friendly staff and great location but no car park.

Our company had a BBQ at The Phoenix in 2017 which was a roaring success, so for our work Summer event this year, we booked a BBQ for 60 employees, plus guests. However, there was no BBQ upon arrival - everything was cooked in the oven and brought out to us.

We are local residents of Sunbury who enjoy family eat out on weekends.

We searched for a suitable place to meet our friends for drink & dinner. Phoenix website advertised 2 for 1 cocktails, Thai food so sounded perfect. However on arrival the barman told us there was no cocktail offer. Even worse he told us that he couldn’t make many of the cocktails on their menu because he didn’t have the ingredients - including coffee! We found the beer & wine prices quite expensive - 4 drinks £24 (& we live in Windsor!). Thai food was pretty good so the evening wasn’t a total disaster but we won’t be in a hurry to return

Fantastic little pub situated on the Thames, nice little outside bar with friendly staff.. The Thai food was excellent and just made you want more and more...

Stopped by here to have lunch and was pleasantly pleased with the attentive service. Its an older building and sits smack on the Thames, on a nice day its good to sit on the patio and watch the river go by. The food was decent and the prices were fair given the location. I think most people would enjoy a lunch here - quite charming.

Popped in to The Phoenix for drinks on our way to the Indian Zest tonight. I enjoyed my beer and there was a good atmosphere. I’d happily come back and stay a bit longer.

I live local so it's always nice to try our local pubs . I went there on a Friday afternoon it was very quiet. But we ordered from the Thia menu and we were surprised of how lovely it was .plenty to choose from and when it arrived it was fresh and it was delicious. I would recommend the Thia battered banana for pudding .value for money as the portions were plenty. We definitely go again .

I booked the dining area for a 'significant' birthday party, with 14 people attending.

Just had a really good Thai meal in The Phoenix. Residents have seen this pub change hands more time than a poker player however it seems they’ve landed on the right Landlords and menu. The Thai food was authentic and reasonably priced whilst it was reassuringly lacking the usual druggie clientele. The landlady actually told me they’d barred for life something like 30 people for drug use in the last two months so thankfully we finally have a decent riverside pub back

I really want this pub to be good, a local which has a great welcome, friendly efficient staff and some decent simple food . Sadly it has none of these. It has the potential to be a superb pub in the heart of the village with a large riverside garden with great views ( and moorings) . Unable to make a simple g&tas; they had no lemons ( there’s a shop opposite selling iemons but clearly they didn’t think of popping out to buy some) the few staff on duty were harassed and flustered when there were only 2 customers. Also a shame to have a big loud tv screen in the garden on in such a serene location. Hoping someone will take over this pub and create a truly lovely destination.

Popped into the Phoenix with a girlfriend to have a drink and snack. Rugby was on so had to shout at bar staff to get served. Ordered 2 x special gin and tonics (which cost us an arm and leg) delivered in half full glasses with 2 x lumps of ice and a straw! . We also ordered a Thai platter which was actually quite nice. May pop in again to try the Thai food. Won’t be having the gin!

Had a lovely Thai meal today, great service and great food, so pleased the Thai food is back. Highly recommend this.

I went to Sunbury-On-Thames for the very first time for a meeting, only to get there and it was cancelled. I thought as I went all the way there I might as well enjoy a meal and sit in the warm (it was snowing you see). The fireplace was roaring, the staff were chatty and friendly and were helpful with dessert recommendation. I enjoyed a nice hot chocolate to begin with, and for dinner a chicken Penang curry with Thai green pancakes with coconut and ice cream. The dessert in particular was incredibly tasty and I would recommend! Thanks for your hospitality on a quiet Tuesday evening!

Dropped in here last week and my god what a change the new manager has achieved relaxed chilled enjoyable music and not full of undesireables anymore keep it up ash and the pub will be booming again.

Difficult to review as other tan me and mates place was empty. just had a feeling that it could be good with some more customers or at another time. bar staff were friendly and chatty

This is okay but would recommend that you go with a small party. It is hard to find a table so book in advance for a good seat. Please look at all my reviews , give me a helpful vote and follow.

This is a lovely pub near the water (very pretty), really nice and friendly staff, nice atmosphere and they have recently introduced a Thai menu which we are working our way through, is tasty as hell!!!! Very authentic! We recently moved to the area and so glad we did with this down the road! Strongly recommend!!!!!!!!

I’ve not visited this pub for several months as it was not good.

Went for lunch with my husband. We had booked a table on line but when we arrived and told the lady behind the bar she said she didn’t have access to that online information, only someone who wasn’t there did!!! Anyway the place was empty so she told us to take a table and she will come and take our order. After waiting ages, my husband went back to the bar to order and she actually said “where did you come from?” Short term memory loss? We had looked at the menu on line but the menus on the tables were much shorter so I couldn’t have what I had pre decided. However, the food was alright, nothing to complain about, but just okay. We were never asked how our meals were or whether we wanted another drink or dessert and as there were only 5 other customers, I thought this was bad.

Good pub for a drink by the river as the garden is on the river front. Friendly staff and nice atmosphere.

Nice for a pint but that’s it...however called in for a quick drink last week and the bar was overrun with weekend cyclists. One barman and six people waiting to be served equals us walking back out of the door and having a drink at home in the garden saving ourselves a bit of money in the bargain. The week before we sat by the river and the place was suddenly overrun with 20 something guys one of whom was talking loudly about getting a bit of “chop chop”...wonder what he was referring to?

The food took an hour to come. My chicken & bacon salad was undercooked (pink), and lacking in bacon, and the onion rings we ordered never came.

Eaten in the Phoenix a few times over the years and it seems never to quite get it right. Ate a perfectly nice meal in here but if you have kids I would give the Kids menu a wide berth as what was served up was laughing;meagre and bad.

Firstly, the staff were incredibly rude and unhelpful. The manager was shockingly disrespectful, and down right rude. As other reviews have stated I would avoid like the plague as you are made to feel unwelcome. Didn’t try the food so I cannot comment on that but if the service was a premonition then I would stay well away.

Ordered a sharing platter of rosemary and garlic camembert. I realise it was a hot day but it was a melted mass that was impossible to put on the very frugal amount of bread, plus it was just plain not flavoured. Our skin on fries had no skin only a huge amount of salt! we ordered extra bread to soak up the 'soup' which we had to ask its whereabouts 20 min later. A vodka lime and soda was flat, the member of staff offered no explanation or apology! Part of the terrace was cordoned off due to a wasps nest being in a planter, presumably they were still waiting for its removal!

Went here for food on Sat 30th June with 4 friends visiting from Australia. After a fantastic day on the river what better way to end than a nice pub meal.....how wrong could we be.

Four of us came for a meal on Saturday. We waited over an hour for the food. The fish and chips were the worst we had ever tasted. The fish tasted like deep fried smoked kipper and the chips were cold. The tiny portion of mushy peas looked like they had been sitting around all day in the heat. The chicken burgers were really tough. They charged £11 to £12 for each meal, when they shouldn't be charging anything for such foul tasting rubbish..they should be shut down. They think it's ok to be ripping people off and making money from serving pure rubbish - they should be utterly ashamed of themselves. Will be telling everyone I know never to go to this place.

One of my new favourite spots, not only are you right by the glorious river, but they serve Brakspear beer too (a winner for my hubby!)

This pub has a large terraced outside area with tables and chairs overlooking the river. We walked, so don’t know if they have a car park.

Went for lunch midweek with friends. Ordered a starter to share and four main meals and sat in the pub garden. Eventually our main meals were bought out to us. We enquirer about the starter and were told that they’d bring it out in a minute! We told them not to bother and they seemed quite relieved so we suspect that they’d forgotten about it. It wasn’t as though they were that busy. The main meals weren’t very good. The chips were cold and the fried eggs looked as though they’d been sitting about for a bit. Certainly won’t be going back.

This used to be one of favourite pubs on the river but due to total mismanagement it is now the worst. We visited here for a food and were kept waiting and waiting. When the food finally arrived it was cold and tasteless. We went in to complain but there was a queue of people waiting to complain!!! Do yourself a big favour and give this place a miss.

Visited here after a round of golf with some friends last weekend. Great location by the river, with a lovely garden to enjoy the sun in. Friendly and attentive staff, with a more varied menu than at most pubs.

Popped in here for a coffee as I was early for a meeting. Quiet (they had just opened), but friendly service and an amazing garden with great river frontage.

We haven't been to the Pheonix for a few months.... our visit, with friends from Kent, yesterday was a lovely surprise. The garden is beautiful.... what a great way to spend a sunny day beside the River Thames. Service attentive, staff friendly and food excellent......the new manager, Bruce has clearly made a positive impact. Well done.

This great pub has gone down hill and (hopefully)has reached the bottom! The pub is full of youths who swear and get drunk (and spend a lot of time in the loo). Nobody controls what goes on as some of the staff clearly enjoy this...

There is a lot of potential here but they are clearly struggling. We ordered a fairly basic option off the menu, before it got busy, but still had to wait 60-70mins for the food. My daughter is 2 so patience was wearing thin. The biggest surprise was the lack of apology or explanation for the delay. Based on other reviews they need to take steps to improve or I can't see them lasting much longer under current ownership.

Only a few people eating,should have known, ordered burger and chips. Waited 30 mins to be served, burger cold, chips soggy and bendy. Waitress disappeared, never to check if all ok, Never again, glad it was a holiday visit, not my local.

This pub is in a lovely setting and it used to be a good place for food. However, my friends and I have not all enjoyed our food there on several of our recent visits, and yesterday afternoon was the last straw. After more than an hour waiting only two of our three meals arrived. The last one was still delayed, so my partner went to the bar to cancel it, and overheard one of the staff saying "who the hell is complaining now". Says it all, doesn't it? My gorgonzola salad was nice but I was so upset at having to complain I couldn't enjoy it properly, and my friend's strange combo of stuffed pepper and roast dinner complete with gravy was tasteless. The visit took the edge of my otherwise perfect weekend and I won't be going back.

local but first time at this pub, don't think i have ever experienced worst service than last night. dark haired girl has some attitude issues, there isn't even please or thank you when ordering drinks... when wanting to order food got told kitchen is closed for 40 min, 30 min later got told its closed another 30 min, then when another table tried to order food (another 30+ min later) they got told kitchen is closed, same dark haired girl spoke with them in worst manner iv ever seen, pulling eyes and all, we never got explanation why its now closed, then to see same girl walks down while lighting up a cigarette and complaining about customers to her mates, and then to see food coming out of kitchen for other tables...? so you choose whom to serve food and whom not? and then publicly accuse customers?

Popped in for a drink in the garden with my parents and children. Garden was very untidy, cigarette butts everywhere around our table, must have been gathering for days if not weeks? Also smashed glass all over the floor and girl member of staff didn’t seem pleased when asked to tidy it up. She swept up about 70% and left the rest. Kids couldn’t play, too dangerous.

Went there with my sister for a drink and meal prior to going to the Riverside Arts Centre. Looked at the menu on the internet prior to going and there was plenty of choice but this bore no resemblance to what was offered when we got there. No fish and chips etc. All that was on offer were 2 sharers but no ploughman's (as advertised), the only starters on offer was the baked camembert and breaded scampi (no scotch egg, crispy chicken lollipops or spicy potato skins - as advertised). From the mains, all that was available was gorgonzola salad, pork ribs, sirloin steak and burgers (no spatchcock chicken, smoked haddock, fish & chips, gammon, pie of the day, T-bone steak or cassoulet. All advertised on the internet as available but weren't. ABSOLUTELY DREADFUL! Even the service was slow and I had to chase them up to get it served. We took advantage of there 25% offer published in the local magazine but it should have been 100%. Won't go back.

Visited the Phoenix for the second time since it’s revamp. Last visit was in feb this year and the food and service was brilliant, such a different story to our visit last night. The pub was empty when we walked in with about 3 people at the bar but it took over half an hour for the bar staff to make 2 drinks! We were originally going to stay for food but reading other reviews I think it’s best we didn’t! Real shame as I was looking forward to going back after my visit in Feb, definitely wouldn’t recommend now though

As a close neighbour to the Phoenix there have been some ups and downs but I am really impressed by the relaunch both in terms of the refurb and the staff. Simon well done for being more hands on as it is really making a difference. I would like to see the bouncers there every weekend! The aperol spritz was good and the beef short rib was wonderful. Please keep it up and turn the Phoenix round.

Went to the reopening on Saturday. The pub has been refurbished nicely but it was not good regards everything else. They gave written details of the free drinks available but when we asked for the cider they didn’t have it. The samples of their new menu turned out to be mainly cheese and pineapple on sticks, and a few bits of dried out chicken and veg! If that’s their new menu they won’t do well. The staff were useless, very slow and didn’t seem to know what they were doing. A bad time was had by us and our friends.

I may not be a local but I have enjoyed several visits to the Phoenix before and after menu change. Happened to pop in on Friday night as I'd heard about refurb via email. Love the new decor, pictures and the new loos. Food was great, highly recommend the baked camembert and the deep fried fish - infact all the plates went back completely empty.
