Following the Management Response to my initial review, I deleted it and have written a fuller version here: My initial review: If you ask for the beef madras, expect something that looks and tastes like beef stew with curry powder. Also, if you comment about the late arrival of your meal, expect a reply such as "I've only got two pairs of hands [sic]". My fuller review: Let me first say that I wasn't the only person to complain about your beef madras. Nevertheless, if you think the dish was satisfactory, then neither will I be the last. Secondly, the comment made at the time about the delay in receiving the meal wasn't made as a complaint. It was simply to say that chips were expected with the main course. The person who made that comment wasn't me, and didn't deserve the response he got from your waiter. With regards to being rude and disrespectful to your staff, you really need to learn the definitions of those words, as does your waiter. The only time I had a negative interaction with your staff was when I said that the beef madras was the most unusual that I had ever come across. Instead of being offended, you ought to take it as a learning point. I have been served curries in many traditional English pubs and restaurants in the past, and none were like yours. As for my Google reviews, you will see that out of 26, 12 are 4 or 5 stars. Aren’t you disappointed that yours isn't one of them?

Staying locally, and decided to try as menu looked more adventurous than others, and reviews very favourable. Traditional old style Lakeland inn, interior very pleasant and welcoming. Despite dining on Tuesday evening out of season was doing good trade with majority of tables reserved. I had the gammon, which was excellent, my wife tried the venison casserole. This had plenty of tender venison chunks, but let down by a rock hard suet dumpling which the knife struggled to make an impression on. Had obviously been made a while before and kept warm for a prolonged period. Mentioned this to the waiter but no gesture made and we did not press the issue. Drinks not particularly cheap even by Keswick standards.

We were thoroughly impressed by the food and service after visiting for Sunday lunch. Me and my partner order a pork and beef traditional roast and both left with fully belly’s and a new favourite spot to visit in Keswick. The meats were cooked to perfection, the beef was tender and the pork came with crackling in the mashed potatoes! All the vegetables were cooked and presented incredibly well and my partner tried, and loved, roasted parsnips for the first time! For dessert we got the gooseberry & apple crumble with custard and the special cheesecake - white chocolate and caramel - with cream. Both desserts were delicious and we both cleared our plates! Also a good selection of beers available. Highly recommend the Pheasant Inn and it is more than worth the 10 minute walk from the town centre!

We booked a few days in advance for Sunday lunch during a weekend away. Service was actually really quick (we thought it might be slow due to it being a busy Sunday) and we both enjoyed Sunday roasts and puddings! Couldn’t fault anything with the food or service. The meals were delicious and great portion sizes! Would definitely come back again if we visit the area.

We only booked our meal about 3 hours before we booked for 5.45 that evening. On arrival, yes the pub was extremely busy, which can always be taken as a good sign. The two waitresses were rushing around, but we're always pleasant and accommodating. My only gripe was that we were sat on a small round table in a walkway and I had to sit sidewards as to get my legs under the table. Saying this, we were very lucky to get a table that night so shouldn't complain. We both ordered the beef pie, which was really tasty and had real chips and. vegetables. It was one of the best beef pies I have had. Due to us having booked to see a show at the theatre on the lake and we're getting pushed for time we unfortunately could not have a pudding even though my mouth was watering at the gooseberry, apple and treacle crumble. I feel like going back today just for the pudding 😁 We would definitely recommend this pub as I said earlier, this is what proper pub food should be like. Well done to your chef and staff in the kitchen. When we next visit the Lakes from our home in Yorkshire we will definitely book to come again and hopefully have enough time and room for a pudding !!!!

Everything was hot freshly cooked excellent produce and beautifully cooked and really tasty. Portions were generous and we weren’t rushed at all. Staff were helpful when our taxi was late. We went for dinner and brought our jack russell puppy. It was a lovely dimly lit pub atmosphere. Staff were very friendly on arrival and we were quickly sat down. There was reasonable room for our pup to sit beside/under the table. Our 1st server was a young lad he made a minor mistake with our drinks and we had to wait quite a while. This was quickly sorted by the 2nd server (not sure if he was the manager). He sorted this quickly with no fuss and even took a drink off the bill which was very nice! The staff couldn't have been more helpful. Choice of food is fantastic with so many lovely options. My partner got cream tomato soup (sooo tasty) and chicken and leek pie (lovely). I got parsnip fritters (tasty with quite a unique taste) and also the ribeye steak (beautiful and the peppercorn sauce was lovely. Left the meal feeling very full and had no room for dessert! Would highly recommend going here for a chilled out enjoyable meal for a couple or a family :)

What a shame, this place has unfortunately gone downhill since the Inn Collection have taken over. Came for a long weekend, the room was great but was not serviced for our second night. The evening meal was positively average and came without the promised samphire and capers. We sat in what used to be a lovely appointed ante room turned into a dining area which was actually nothing short of being a corridor for staff to access another dining area. Getting your shoulder bumped every time they passed . There’s not enough staff, the main cosy bar is unmanned and you have to go to the now main bar and queue (8 minutes to get a beer) . This used to be a Lakeland gem……sorry it’s no longer worth it🥴

One pint of Guinness and one ( large ) glass of NZ Sauvignon Blanc and we went happily on our way .

A lovely quiet location off the A66 (if heading away from Keswick, watch for the turn as the dual carriageway section ends) but lines of cars parked outside, on a Friday evening in March. Always a good sign! We'd phoned earlier in the day to book a table, but the recorded message on the phone system told us that unless we were a party of 8 or more, they wouldn't accept a booking. When we turned up, the first question asked of us was 'had we booked?' Surely some problem in head office here... Anyway, we were quickly shown to a table in the busy bar.Lovely food which was served in good time, no excessive delays despite every table being occupied and ordering food. A good group of pleasant and hard-working chaps behind the bar and around the tables plus a busy lady delivering the food from the kitchen - we had a good meal and felt very well looked after. Reasonable value too. We've eaten there before and would have no hesitation doing so again.

Although the food was fine we waited 25 mins to order a drink and food. The drinks order was incorrect but as we weren’t sure we would get anything else we just kept it. The tap water and condiments we asked for never arrived and we never even got a chance to order a dessert as, after waiting ages again as all the waiting staff disappeared, we were then just handed a bill.Although finally apologetic the pub was obviously overwhelmed and short staffed. A shame as the other reviews here were so good but we obviously experienced too busy a day which the pub was ill equipped to handle.

Visited this hidden gem of a lakeland pub for the first time and certainly won't be the last. Sampled the venison bourgion and it was absolutely gorgeous, the meat just melted in your mouth and the and the gravy was so tasty, my partner had the steak pie which also was excellent. Admittely, there was a small delay in the food being served as a young lady explained there was a delay in the kitchen due an ordering system going down, she was curtious and polite. We were wrapped up for the weather as we knew the temperature dropped off about 6/7 o'clock. The delay in the food proved an advantage as it allowed me to have a couple more pints of Wainwrights real ale, which was also top notch!!!!! When the food did arrive it was worth the wait. First, visit to the Pheasant and certainly won't be the last..!!!!

Unfortunately our experience at the pheasant inn was not a good one.Came here whilst on a family trip, waited 15 minutes to be seated on a reserved booking and just told someone else will sort us in a minute continuously…until I finally went in and explained we were just stood waiting, to be honest we should have took that as a sign and left!!Ordered food and drink and had to pay straight away (no problem) but 1.5 hours later no food had arrived - everyone else had ate and been gone on all other tables and we were one of the only tables left. We spoke to a member of staff (a lady) who told us it was a fault on the system and they were getting the chef to cook it now, no apology or empathy for being sat outside for almost 2 hours in the cold from 6-8pm, we said we weren’t too happy and wondered if there was anything they could do to rectify this, at this point she said ‘if you think you’re getting a round of drinks free we won’t be giving you that’ - to be honest that’s the least they could do!! Usually the reason you order a drink with dinner is to drink that with your dinner!! The manager (if you could even call him a manager) did not act in an accommodating way by any means and was very very rude!!! I have worked in hospitality and that is not how you treat a paying customer!! We are on a family break for a few days together when we all work hard through the week and we are celebrating a special birthday as a household and I am extremely disappointed at how bad this service was as it caused a real ripple in the evening. No one even said sorry or tried to rectify it AT ALL just shrugged it off and was nothing but rude to us. When the food was ready the manager brought it all out on his OWN baring in mind there was 4/5 waiters and waitresses inside, which meant he had to do 4 trips and by the time the potatoes had arrived we were half way through our meal, considering the circumstances you would expect them all to be helping with that when there was very few customers in the restaurant at this time but that clearly wasn’t even thought about?I don’t like to rate businesses low especially given the situation at the moment but I am really REALLY disappointed, high reviews that just do not match to the reality. The food was quite nice when it came but the experience was completely ruined by that point. Very very bad customer service.

Research on where to eat done. Reviews good. The Pheasant Inn it was. Booked ahead for the evening before lockdown. I really wanted to be delighted. I am sure that they will have been covid-secure but on arrival we did not feel comfortable. Shown through a room behind the bar, it was ok but in half an hour there would be 9 people in a small room with no capacity to circulate air (I would suggest that the velum is opened). Drinks came reasonable quickly, but it was 40 minutes before we were asked for our order, consequently a line diner (+dog) was served his meal (which was the same as ours) despite being seated 15 after we were. When the meal arrival we were not asked for condiments (an omission I am sure as everyone else seemed to be asked). After it was obvious we weren’t being offered anything I asked, I also asked for another pint, which never materialised. I assume I wasn’t heard but perhaps it was because the staff (who were pleasant didn’t have the time they needed or misused the time they had - I really do to know). The meal however, Lakeland pie was fabulous and a hearty meal was eaten (cauliflower could have been crisper, but I am being picky). Puddings (sticky toffee and crumble respectively) were also excellent. As an experience though, it was not good. I am sure the management will say it didn’t happen, I couldn’t have felt that way and generally brush my experience aside. All that would have been needed to match the food with service would be better awareness and care of the customer, that could be achieved at nil additional cost. I may have been unlucky (a bad day at the office) but I speak as I find. If you want good (& ample food) here is a place, but if you also want a good experience then maybe, when lockdown allows dine elsewhere

Being slightly out of town made it more preferable to the busy Keswick centre. The food menu was extensive and both the meals and drinks we had were excellent. It is somewhere we would definitely return to.The only *very* slight piece of criticism we can offer, is during our visit we had four different members of staff attend to us, and with it currently being table service it took a while to get someone’s attention to order deserts. However, that did not distract from an excellent visit.

There is a good range of beer on offer, but the star of the show though was the food - the slow cooked lamb was absolutely fantastic ! Well worth a visit if you are in the area.

Esnobismo. Nada. Fui a otro lugar. . . . . . si no tienes comida, olvídalo. .

Ambos eran abundantes y deliciosos. This review is in reply to the managements comments on a previous review titled “Poor Service with Rude Aggressive Staff”In relation to your comments I feel I must point out the following:-1. Our table was booked for ‪8.30pm‬ and we arrived about 5 minutes early and waited outside until a member of your staff brought us in and asked us to wait in the bar area until our table was ready. There was a sign which clearly stated only 1 person at a time in this area yet you invited all 6 of us to wait there! After about 15 mins we decided to go and sit at the 2 small bar tables so that we were out of the way of other people who were having to squeeze past us to get to the toilets. Staff then invited 2 other people who were outside to come in and order their drinks at the bar? NO COVID PRECAUTIONS GOING ON HERE!! The waiter then arrived with another small table and told us we would be eating there. We made it perfectly clear to him that we were not happy to be sat there eating (at the side of toilets) as we had made our booking for the restaurant a few weeks ago. He said due to you being short staffed there was nowhere else for us to go. That’s when we decided to stay where we were as it was about ‪9pm‬ by this time and we were all hungry.2. Yes I asked if the fire could be lit and yes I do know how long it takes to warm up. We were staying in a cottage with the same style of open fire. We didn’t want the whole pub to be warmed up just the bit where we were sat which was in front of the fire. I have been to various restaurants over the last few weeks and not a single one has had the door open for Covid reasons? It seemed very contradictory as you were happy to have people squeezing past each other in the bar area yet insisted on having the door open? It wasn’t at this point it all went to chaos and you said as this was before our meal. It was when the plates were being collected and we were asked if everything had been ok? That’s when a member of our group told her no. That we had eaten our food while cold and had been put in an area we hadn’t wanted. That’s when she said “well why don’t you all just get Covid then!” We were totally shocked by this and yes someone got very upset and swore using language that was regrettable and said that kind of comment was not acceptable. But, at NO point did he call her the profanity that you seem to think. That group member then walked out.3. No more swearing was made by anyone else. The guy at the bar then said he wouldn’t have a member of his staff spoken to in that way, he didn’t seem at all concerned about the way she spoke to us, paying customers. I have friends working in hospitality so I really appreciate the work they do but they have all had the same shocked reaction at the comment she made. We were only asked to leave when there was just me and my partner left and we were already walking out through the door.4. There is a comment you made about us that has since been removed. You accused us of shouting at the man behind the bar and saying we wanted to fight him outside?? ABSOLUTE LIES!! Another review from the same night accused us of spoiling their evening as they were sitting in the bar area at the side of the toilets. Anyone who has been here knows how small the bar area is and ours were the only tables there so I don’t understand how they could have been sat there also??5. 2 elderly members of our party have been coming here for over 20 years, the rest of us at least 10 years. Never have we had an experience like this. You’re staff need educating on what “Covid Safe” actually means. It’s not just a phrase for them to use when it suits.

We were staying in portinscale, and had not booked anywhere for the Wednesday night,(bookings a must in keswick at the moment) after a conversation with our host, he recommended The Pheasant Inn - about 30mins walk away. When we booked the table, we were told it would be opposite the bar - last one, so we were thank full. When we arrived we were greeted by two very polite bar staff, so while one took our drinks order, the other member of staff decided to see if there was another table available, which there was, so we accepted it , as the bar area was a thoughfare for the staff serving tables outside. All the staff were very friendly, helpful and nothing seemed to be a problem. The choices on the menu was very good- it was difficult to decide whether to go for starter and main course or main and sweet - looking at tables, you needed to have a good appetite to take on all three - the portions are very generous!.The quality of the food is very high and it was nice to see some different fresh vegetables served, a long side the main dishes. We decided to have a sweet, and again they were excellent, - a decision well made-(gorgeous crumble and custard) We enjoyed our evening, everything was just right - good food, great value and brilliant staff--would recommend, like we were.

My wife had the lamb which, as another review mentioned, just fell off the bone. The rest of the party had the Beef pie and the gammon and all complimented how well they were cooked. If there was a slight delay in being attended to it is because the are pretty busy, and that is because the food is so good. Some people are only happy if they are moaning!

When we booked we were told we would have a table in the restaurant. We were told by the young female bar staff, with long bleached hair that we wold be sitting in the small bar area by the toilets. Because of Covid I did not feel comfortable about this at all. This was because people were walking through. When we raised this with her she was rude and abrupt. My partner and I sat down as we were hungry. The girl behind the bar was more concerned about texting her friends and looking at her self in the mirror but eventually served us. When the food arrived they had got the order wrong and did not serve new new potato’s with one meal. I had scampi and the chips were very over cooked. I was not impressed with the food or service. I was also not impressed about the complete lack of Social distance if you are seated in the small bar. They have a complete lack off concern about Covid and risk to customers. They were also allowing customers to stand at the bar and order drinks placing us at even more risk off contracting Covid whilst attempting to eat our food. The staff also had no face covering on.

After our visit on Saturday, we will never visit again. Upon arrival, we were asked to stand in a waiting zone as our table in the restaurant area was not available. We were happy to wait due to the current situation. However, we were waiting there a while and so we decided to take a seat in the bar area because the sign said no more than one person waiting in the area. Additionally, we were causing an obstruction as other customers were passing through by the bar area. We then order drink and sat at the table. So far our visit was pleasant. Then a waiter approached up and brought another table and told us this is where you are going to be eating (locates next to the toilets and the entrance which was open). We questioned as we booked to be seated in the restaurant. But unfortunately the waiter told us that they are busy due to covid and that you’ll have to stay where you are (the waiter wasn’t customer friendly). Anyway, we ordered our food. We asked if we could have the door closed or the fire on. It was a very cold and miserable day. However, we were not allowed the fire as we were told that it will attract others. Although, certain restrictions were obliged to, the one where ‘one customer could wait’ ( previously mentioned) was not. Seems that the restrictions were only adhered to one suited by the staff. Moreover, toward the end of the night, a blonde girl waiter asked if we enjoyed our meals which one of our party replied and said no not really. The girl replied and asked why? We explained our reasons and mention how cold it was and our experience. Which the girl rudely and unprofessionally said ‘we’ll catch covid then’. We were so shocked at this response and disgusted. This caused us to have a little rant which the girl then walked away. Then, the bar man chirped up and had a go and said we shouldn’t have talk to his staff like that. Anyway we decided to pay the bill and leave. As we were leaving a one member of our party was just about to be the last through the door, the bar man said ‘you should all leave’. Although we had already left we feel like the bar man was petty and wanted the last word ( not setting a good example for his staff) Anyway, I would not recommend this place to anyone. It’s is difficult times and we like to eat out to support local pubs and restaurants but if we are going to be treated like animals then places like that don’t deserve people’s customs. Staff were really attentive and COVID measures were in place including 1 person in toilets at a time. Unfortunately the only let down was a rowdy group near to us who shouted and swore! We were fortunate to secure a booking at the Pheasant Inn on a particularly busy week of August 2020 during the “eat out to help out” scheme. The pub was incredibly busy but well organised given the size of the pub and current covid restrictions, with an effective system on the loos, and plenty of hand sanitizer available. Even though it was busy- we received wonderful service from all the staff, food and drinks orders were taken promptly and food arrived in a reasonable time and was of high quality! Highly recommend the black pud fritters to start and we both had the steak and ale pie- (clearly we aren’t vegans!!) which was absolutely delicious- clearly great quality meat and cooked to perfection! One of the staff even made time to “help” my step son win a game of Dobble- which made his day!! Thank you for a lovely relaxed evening on a particularly busy one for you all.

We experienced a reduced menu in the current COVID times ,which was fine. The hygiene arrangements were exemplary and the staff absolutely lovely. The burger and steak and kidney pie were excellent and I appreciated the waitress warning me that if I ordered the lamb without pea purée it would be too dry. The chicken skewers were nice but as a dish, with chips and flatbread, it is too dry, it needs a raita or some sauce. The beef brisket rissoles were similarly a little dry and the sweet potato referred to in the menu was just a smear of purée on the plate so perhaps we should have been advised to order a side dish with this. Comments offered constructively as restaurant doing very well under current difficult circs.

Terrible service, half way through our meal we got rudely interrupted and embarrassed us infront of all of the other guests as we were accused of being under 16 which first of all we are not and second of all this was when we had almost finished our meal. Atleast ask us before we order or enter the pub.And to top it all off make a huge point of how she couldn’t split the bill and ended up doing it anyway. Its appalling the treatment we have received today as people stereotype us as youths. Will NOT be returning and I suggest you think twice about coming to this establishment.
