Despite calling a few days ahead to book in our large party which I explained included dogs and young children, we were given an extremely rude reception - before being reluctantly led by the landlady to a table laid up for a different booking and told we had to fold down our buggies and leave within 2 hours. (There were other buggies in the bar area so this seemed particularly odd). We all felt really uncomfortable so decided to leave rather than let the atmosphere spoil our meal. Extremely disappointing as we had planned our trip to Keswick around a meal here. But delighted m to say all was not lost though and we found somewhere with a much more friendly and accommodating attitude.

We popped into the george hotel a few nights ago and the landlady was very sharp and abrupt with my wife when she came to serve her. I also heard her being rude with another customer. She was muttering and grunting and giving us filthy looks as we sat near the bar. She needs to learn how to talk to people nicely if she wants to run a pub otherwise the pub and hotel will lose customers. There are plenty of other places to drink in keswick I won't be going back in there again.

I have never felt more unwelcome as an American in my life. I made a reservation, and my husband and I arrived on time. No one greeted us, and when we finally found someone we were told to sit wherever we wanted and order from the counter. When we went to the counter, I was told we were at the wrong table ( which she later retracted), and that they were out of steak ( which she later retracted) then told me she would have to teach me how to order in the UK. She told me that in the UK they didn’t put smiley faces on the tickets, we weren’t expected to tip as in America, and that while she might be considered rude, she was just stating facts. When my steak came out, it was so tough that I couldn’t cut through it. My husband’s meal was equally bad. We decided to go somewhere else, then was scolded by patrons and the lady as being rude. We tried to pay, even though we couldn’t eat, but were only charged for our drinks. I left in tears. I do not like leaving such a bad review, but this was a nightmare of an experience for a US citizen’s first time in the UK.

Booked & went for Sundsy Lunch on the 30th June 2024. we should have known something was not right - 2.30pm and we were the only people in the restaurant/pub. ordered the roast beef & vegeterian roast - can honestly say it was the worse dining experience we have had, the beef was grey, stringy & of poor quality flopped on top of mash potatoes with 1 roast potato on side (i wish i had taken a photo). service was extremley poor i had to go and find a staff member, no inter action. i left my meal and should have complained but my wife thought it was best to just move on & NOT go back again. when we returned to our hotel we were told the George had been taken over & it was struggling & standards had dropped dramatically. as frequent visitors to Keswick we will give this a wide berth in future

We came back here for the famous cow pie which we have had in the past to be told they no longer did it but they had a steak and ale pie. We had this for £17.50 each plus over £5 for a pint and to say it was disappointing is an understatement. It had been reheated and the crust was dry, frozen chips, and the meat was lacking in the flavour and quantity of the cow pie. We won’t be back. I did tell the waitress but she just apologised.

Our booking was for 6 plus dog made months ago, and checked week before. When we arrived told we would be in restaurant, dogs not allowed and nothing they could do. TBH pleased couldn’t go into the restaurant as it looked very depressing. Managed to find a bar table eventually. The famous “cow pie” is no longer on the menu our only reason for booking. Atmosphere was very unpleasant, in the bar. Managed to get a booking in the Royal Oak instead which is always great! I’ve been coming to Keswick for 30 years and this has always been my least favourite pub, and I’ve been to them all, many times. Top it all my umbrella was stolen in minutes of arriving! Will never go back here!

Really sad to see how much this place has declined since our last visit two years ago. The pub was empty on a Friday night and the food was on a par with a Premier Inn or Hungary Horse, but pricey. The food here in past was legendary, but the pub now has new ownership. Very sad and disappointed. Don't spend your hard earned cash here.

Stayed here before so wanted to come back. The location is perfect for the centre. Parking only for 3 vehicles at the rear but we were fortunate to get the last spot. The room was very spacious overlooking the road so at night with having to have the window open was a little noisy but we expected that with the location. The bed tough was uncomfortable as the mattress felt very old. When we went out the staff saw us leaving in the morning but when we came back later, fresh towels and toilet roll was left outside the room and the bed wasn't made up. Was this their practice as there no other rooms outside the rooms like that? It was a special occasion for us and felt disappointed.

Told on Saturday they still did cow pie by barman but Monday lunchtime when we came to order we were told it hadn't t been on offer for a while? Steak pie was nice, though veggies were nothing special. Seems they've limited options whilst waiting on new landlords. Won't be back as Keswick has a wider range of food elsewhere.

A cheap hotel where you get what you pay for (not a lot!). We stayed here for a week and had a mixed experience. The room itself (#5) was nice enough. The bedding and floors were clean, there were drawers and a wardrobe for unpacking our things. Decor was perfectly reasonable. The room had an en suite with toilet and shower and sink and everything worked well. There was some mould in the shower but it was generally clean. There was tea and coffee and mugs and a kettle, with milk and sugar. There was a tv but we never turned it on. However, the room got very hot during the daytime despite us always having the heating off. There was a window in the bathroom but it didn't open, and there was a window in the main room that was possible to open, but had no way of staying open. It was very stiff but wouldn't stay up. Worse, it didn't lock and is accessible easily from the outside. So anyone could just walk up to the outside, slide it up and come into the room and there's nothing you can do about it. A security risk, but no relief from the heat - the worst kind of window. The daily housekeeping in the room was virtually non-existent. They replenished the milk and toilet roll, and emptied the bin, but that's about it. Our dirty mugs from the morning cup of tea were left for us to go downstairs and ask for clean ones. They didn't replenish the coffee so we ran out part way through the week. They didn't hoover or make the bed or anything so the floor got dirtier over the week from our shoes coming back each day. The shower gel provided ran out after a couple of days and they didn't give a new one. We didn't ask but should we have to? Breakfast is provided, and it was pretty good. Tea, coffee, cereals, yoghurt, butter, honey and jam were out in a buffet style, and hot toast was brought to the table, and a meal from the menu was brought as table service. The cooked breakfast was nice with good variety. I had it every day and enjoyed it! Sadly, the pastries, pancakes and fresh fruit advertised when we booked weren't available as they had changed management since we booked. There was no apology for this. It was what it was. Tough. One morning there was a power cut so breakfast was cancelled. They wouldn't open the fridge to get milk out in case their other food spoiled. The staff didn't try and pop round the corner to buy some milk or pastries for us. They didn't say we could go out and buy our own breakfast and they'd cover the cost up to £10 or something. No partial refund for the lack of service. Another guest had a young child and they got a handful of milks meant for cups of tea and a cereal box. No breakfast for us and that was it. It was what it was. Tough. One night there was a fire alarm at 01:00. It was so loud that it jolted us awake so suddenly that I had a pain in my chest for hours. We followed the fire exit signs to the front door and it was locked! The fire exit signs actually led us to a locked door. My wife called the emergency staff number and we all found our way out the back door and stood for a while before the staff member turned up and allowed us back in. No reason was given. There was a rumour it had just been a fault. No apology was given. It was what it was. Tough. Another morning there had been a smashed window. There was glass on the floor in the restaurant area. The staff were stressed and their attention, understandably, seemed to slip. Our baked beans were cold with breakfast, for example. The location is pretty great though. Keswick is a great little town and Derwent water nearby is lovely. So we managed our stay here okay, but this is not a place where the staff particularly care that you have a great stay. It's cheap and you get what you pay for, which is a room and breakfast and no frills. I've given it four stars because all the basics are there. There weren't rats or anything. And for the price it wasn't bad value. But it certainly wasn't a great stay. I doubt we'll be back in a hurry.

I stayed here for a few nights on a trip to Keswick. The location is about as good as you could hope for, right in the center of town and a quick walk from the bus stop. The pub downstairs is fine but not great; I did not try their food so can't comment. The room itself was a good value for the money, with the comfortable bed (most important part!) being the highlight. My main criticism is that the WiFi was quite poor, the TV could use an update (there's no excuse not to own a smart TV in 2024... they're so cheap), and I wasn't able to get my shower working so opted to take baths. I was overcharged for my room by someone who made an honest mistake, and although I found it slightly frustrating, they fixed it for me without much hassle. All things considered, it's not luxury accommodation but it was perfectly fine for the promotional price I paid. I'm not sure it would be my first choice if I had to pay full price, but I've certainly stayed in worse places. 3/5

Booked a table for 7.30pm last Saturday night for 8 people a group of friends, as we have eaten here previously over the years. On arrival we were asked if we could get drinks from the bar as they were short staffed. We were called to our table, on being seated we looked around and no other tables were eating no meals being served. Our food order was taken and we asked how long our food would be the member of staff replied sarcasticly about 20 minutes but that is a guess ? 8pm came and went appologies were given and were advised by a member of your staff they had no chef due to them being drunk the night before and they were not in, but were offered a free dessert, we said thanks and we would wait another half hour went by and we were offered free drinks from the bar, but we would have to fetch them and charge to the table, this we did not partake in, a further half hour had passed and we asked again thinking it would not be served shortly and your member of staff offered/advised to go elsewhere to eat, being a party of eight and being late we would struggle to get in elsewhere. One of our members left and checked a nearby establishment if they could accommodate us, they could. We asked to speak to the manager, who did come to our table and explain the no chef situation, but if you had no chef why not call your booked in customers earlier in the day to explain. That would have been GOOD CUSTOMER SERVICE . Then to reply back to a member of our parties review added earlier today that it was all untrue !

One star for the 2 people serving and cooking in this restaurant. Booked a table for 8 people weeks ago 7.30. Sat 9thMarch 2024. Entered the restaurant, was asked to go to the bar for our drinks as only 2 staff in. Asked how long food would take to being served, as the restaurant was full and no one was eating, 20 minutes . I asked be honest hope it's not 90 minutes. CANT say was the answer and the staff member would only say approximately 20 minutes . Gave benefit of doubt. Ordered the a main course only. 9.30 pm WALKED OUT. Offered a sweet for free for our wait at 8.30. At 9.30 asked to speak with the manager. He confirmed exactly what the member of staff said on taking our order. OUR CHEF WAS SACKED THIS MORNING AS HE DIDNT WANT TO COME TO WORK TONIGHT, AS HE GOT WASTED ( drunk) THE NIGHT BEFORE. Recommendation cancel all bookings until enough staff are available to service the restaurant, THE CUSTOMERS CAN THEN MAKE ALTERNATIVE ARRANGEMENTS. Do not discuss staffing problems with the customers.

We booked to go here as a group of locals for an after work meal and drinks. Most of the party ordered a.pie and chips of some sort. When the meals arrived, we initially thought that the pies were raw, because the pastry was so pale and flat. The contents inside were meaty and hot, so they were cooked but the pastry was the worst I've ever seen. So disappointing after all the hype. We'd forgotten that it had been taken over by Marston's brewery and they have absolutely ruined the menu. Skinny oven chips instead of the old style ones they used to have. The restaurant staff were lovely but the bar staff were cold and a bit surly. As a local , I definitely will not be returning.

I had seen the reviews and went for our first visit. 12.45 on market day and not a single customer in the pub. It was dead. Reviews seem to suggest this pub has been destroyed by the new corporate ownership and we did not visit again in our weeks stay. My wife and I have been regular visitors to Keswick for many years, and a meal at The George has always been on the agenda, as good food and a great atmosphere were assured. Despite the more recent poor reviews (although those on their website appear much more glowing?) we decided to remain loyal and see for ourselves. Upon entering we had a look at the old snug room on the left, this used to be a room of great charm, with eclectic prints on the walls and assorted Knick knacks strewn around, and a lovely old fireplace with a roaring fire during the colder months. Sadly the room seems to have been largely stripped, and now seems quite austere and unwelcoming, there is now a table blocking the fireplace. Onto the bar area, this again used to be a place of great character, with assorted items of furniture, and was always crowded with a mix of locals and walkers. Again this space appears to have been stripped, losing its charm in the process. It appears to have been deserted by locals and walkers. The real ale pumps which used to have pride of place have been shunted into the far corner to make way for trendier offerings, and there is no longer the same variety on offer. My wife requested a glass of the medium range wine, not available!, they suggested an alternative which turned out to be more expensive. We had booked a table, were a little early but as we did not fancy lingering in the bar we made our way through to the restaurant, where we were greeted warmly and shown to our table. The menu now consists largely of the usual mainstream dishes, gone is the specials board, as are the game dishes, and the lovely lamb Henry. I chose the chicken and mushroom pie, my good lady the chicken and chorizo kebab. While we waited the couple at the next table were served, one had the steak and ale pie, the other the chicken pie. For some reason the size of the steak pie was significantly bigger than the chicken one. Granted it was a little more expensive, but you would think this would reflect the cost of the ingredients. A different disgruntled diner queried the discrepancy with the waiter, who said he would try to find a good answer, but he did not return. I consoled myself with the fact that my chicken pie would have less calories. Our food arrived, my pie was OK but a little bland, the pastry looked somewhat anaemic, and lacked flavour, which takes some doing. The buttery mash as described seemed to be on only nodding terms with the butter and again was bland. Everything needed more seasoning, especially a good hit of pepper. The veg however was well cooked. My wife said her kebab was nicely cooked, although the crumbed feta was hard to spot, and the pomegranate seeds even harder. There didn’t seem a lot for the price. The flat bread, which appeared to double up as the naan, was placed on top of grease proof paper, why would you? The diner next to use went for the cow pie, so I was quite excited to see it. I had visions of the pie of legend of bygone years, a succulent piece carved from the mother pie, the only uncertainty being whether you would get a corner or middle piece with their different pastry/meat ratios, it was special regardless Todays version is a pale imitation, pale also being the operative word when describing the pastry. It is an individually prepared portion, which would explain why no half size option, as you can’t cut the serving dish in half. Regrettably both the food, and the establishment appear somewhat soulless, and we can’t say we would return.

Out of 4 of us, 1 said the meal was good (the thai veg curry) the chicken kebab eater said it was very dry & served on greaseproof paper under it so every time you cut a piece of the flat bread it was on, you got paper with it, - the scampi eater left most of it, it was very dark brown, over cooked, dry & horrible & I had basically Hunters Chicken, but there was next to no bbq sauce in it, so very dry, it was so overcooked it was like shoe leather & hard to cut, chewy as anything. Soooo very disappointed. On a Saturday night, this cant have been the regular chefs night off, so very bad food. No we did not complain. The staff were lovely & if the chef is that rubbish, sending stuff back, kicking up a storm, just adds to their bad night & you never know how long you have to wait & if you are going to get something back with spit in it! Regular Keswick visitors (about 3 times a year) but we will not eat there again.

We tried the George for a Sunday lunch following its recent management change. We were shown to our table by the waitress whom came promptly for the drinks order, followed by the food order. After a 45 min wait, the Sunday roasts arrived. The initial thought was poor quality food. Under cooked roast potatoes, near to raw parsnips, dry Yorkshire puddings, dry mash and thin gravy (which is a personal preference). The main disappointment was the dry and tough beef. Had to ask for sauces and waitress missed the chance to ask for further drinks, but we already had decided to leave asap. I offered my feedback to the restaurant manager whom apologised, as I overheard another customer adjusting what he was prepared to pay for his meal. The George was always a highlight of our regular stays in Keswick, but based upon this experience, I will not return.

Stopped for coffee break this morning. Not too many places open at this time of year especially early morning (9.30).location and atmosphere is nice and staff were pleasant. Unfortunately scones were not fresh -baked yesterday I would think. Coffee wasn’t that hot either cold long before I’d finished my scone. Lots of jam served but butter very hard and difficult to spread. No cream. Price was fine if food had been better
