We had been to Muncaster castle for the Halloween festival and we booked in to the the Pennington hotel for the night . On arrival a very friendly lady checked us in . We went into the bar for a drink which was a lovely area . We decided that we would have our evening meal in the restaurant, my friend and I had Katu chicken burgers and chips , her daughter had fish and chips , which were delicious. We had a sweet two white chocolate cheesecakes and sticky chocolate cake. The meal was delicious and served by a lovey lady . Our bedroom was a family room and was very comfortable and clean . Thank you we had a lovely stay

A very welcoming place, nicely done and a good range on the menu. The food was delicious. I had the chicken pie and my husband had the special seafood ravioli, both well made and plentiful as well as being good value for money.

Wonderful stay at The Pennington hotel. The hotel is located next to the water and the sunset we saw the first night was fantastic! Also fantastic were the beds and the bath towels! My daughter loved the tea and chocolate biscuits. We ate in the restaurant for breakfast and I loved the bacon. We also ate dinner at The Pennington and had a very enjoyable meal. The inn and restaurant are small and quaint filled with a wonderfully nice team waiting on you.

We've been for lunch many times but this was our 1st time to stay in the hotel - we decided to treat ourselves with the stream train coming through in the evening. Arrived at 3pm with beautiful sunshine so had a couple of glasses of wine in the beer garden which was delightful. Our room was ready room 6 towards the back of the building on the 1st floor. We went to see the train then came back for our evening meal, it was quite busy but with a nice relaxing atmosphere. Being a vegetarian I didn't have much options so opted for 2 starters and sides instead, the meat eater was very satisfied. I enjoyed my cheese and biscuits. We sat and had another drink in the comfortable bar before heading off to bed. Room very comfortable and quite spacious with a decent bathroom. Breakfast was really good. Would definitely return

My husband and I went for dinner tonight, menu choices akin with pub bar meals, no A la Carte, no specials, food was well cooked, my husband's pork belly with rice noodles - broth was lacking in flavour, he added some of my Katsu sauce, my chicken burger was ok, pub bar meal standard - although staff were attentive, beer good, we were disappointed with food - not up to hotel standards

We popped in the off chance for some lunch and we were so glad we did. Everyone’s food was lovely and everyone enjoyed it, the seafood platter was to die for so compliments to the chef that was on shift this afternoon. We sat in the bar area as we had our dog with us which was also a lovely seating area.

The staff were very friendly and welcoming. The room was extremely comfortable and the food was excellent both in quality and quantity but above all it was hot and the service was first class. It is however quite a long way from the car park to the hotel entrance for disabled drivers but in fairness it is difficult for any dedicated disabled spaces to be installed closer to the hotel. Despite this stay at the Pennington is highly recommended with plenty to do in the surrounding area including the Steam Train.

Myself and my friend were given a warm welcome when we arrived for a meal at the Pennington Hotel on Bank Holiday Sunday. The decor is very nice, with a warm ambience and the staff were very friendly and attentive. We had absolutely delicious meals and the prices were on a par for the area, but our meals were far superior to any other places we had tried whilst staying with our outdoor group at Wasdale YHA. We recommended the meals to members of our group and some booked for the following evening. They too were impressed.

Stayed here for 1 night following our wedding so 'Honeymoon' nothing extra provided and room was basic. We booked dinner, bed & breakfast for 1 night was over £245 - Dinner we were unaware you only get £25 allowance so having three course you had to pay extra ( this needs to be made clearer as this is not good value package) service was slow in evening and breakfast although only 3 tables busy waited ages. Breakfast was tiny sausage, overdone bacon and tiny portion of beans and smallest egg I have ever seen ( very tight_ and 1 slice of toast each. Not good value and seems to be penny pinching.

We stayed here for the night and it was everything you would expect, clean, nothing super fancy but everything you need and you get a good night sleep. Staff were present. Only reason I gave 4* and not 5 was the shower curtain had to curve round because of the roof design and It was snug but functional. Would recommend.

If you want a beautiful coastline, Muncaster Castle and The Ravenglass and Eskdale Heritage Railway then you will love it here! We spent 2 nights at the Pennington. We stayed here to attend a wedding anniversary for some very close friends. We travelled with our 19 month old dog for his first trip away from home. The hotel was very clean and comfortable with excellent food for both evening and breakfast meals. The staff could not have been more helpful and friendly, and made us feel very welcome, particularly our young puppy, who was on a special diet, which the hotel arranged to keep in a cool place for us. All in all, it was a lovely venue for visiting the area and meeting up with old friends for their celebration.

We took the two executive en suite bedrooms at the northern end of the hotel, overlooking the basin into which three rivers flow. Depending on the weather and the state of the tide, the view was constantly changing, and we woke in the morning to the cries of the curlew and oystercatcher. The bar is large and comfortable, and the food in the dining-room, whether at breakfast or dinner, varied and excellent.

Stayed 2 nights in a standard double room which was clean and comfortable and had all the facilities needed. We found staff friendly and helpful. We didn’t eat in the hotel restaurant, except for breakfast, which is cooked fresh so depending on how busy it is you might need to wait a-bit but there are cereals etc to keep you going. If you’re going to be late back maybe ask for a door key though we did find the back door was open.

My husband and I stayed for 1 night and it was comfortable however our dinner was disgusting (to put it nicely) or ‘revolting’ as my hubby put it, that’s why we gave a 3/5. His steak had clearly been frozen as it was burnt on the outside yet raw on the inside. He asked for his steak to be cooked ‘medium’, it was also tough and dry. We brought this up with the waitress and she just looked and said ‘sorry’ then walked away and another waitress came back with the bill and they tried to still charge us for ½ of it which we refused. My meal was ok as I got the vegan platter, it was really just from a jar, quite bland and the naan bread was stale. Unfortunately the staff were inexperienced and didn’t communicate clearly, just mumbled their words & kept disappearing so we couldn’t grab their attention. Our food took over 1 hour to come out so we were quite hungry by this point. Disappointed is an understatement.

What a disappointment. This was possibly the worst experience I have ever had from an establishment that presents itself as a chic hotel. We had reserved 3 weeks before, specifying that we would only be in Ravenglass one night. The guesthouse where we had reserved to sleep had highly recommended us to do so, on a Saturday in high season. They lost our reservation. We albeit did arrive earlier, but we pleasantly stated we would have been happy to have a drink at the bar while waiting for our table. The staff member fumbled with her seat planning then without warmth said "we can seat you at the breakfast room" - our mood still being jolly at that point we agreed. Ordering was an unpleasant experience, as apparently if you order a starter as a second course this is inconvenient for the waitress, who insisted on her preferred order but finally agreed. She was also uninformed of the day specials, offering dishes that were infact finished. A professional approach when uncertain should have been "let me check for you" - because this happened twice she lost our trust. While we waited for our starter, I wandered around to the main dining area and saw how cosy and more pleasant it was than the breakfast room. If only they would have let us have that pre-drink, sigh, we could have possibly enjoyed our time there! The food was bland and mediocre, honestly we have eaten much better in pubs in our 3-week trip all over Cumbria! -The tomato soup was was heated up passata -The risotto overcooked, no bouillon just water flavor, stodgy and mainly just tasted of butter. -The bangers and mash had runny gravey like you would find in a school canteen. Halfway through this bland main we canceled our next order and the disgruntled waitress from before first said No problem then returned and said No you are too late. We asked it as a takeaway then. And waited 20minutes... Finally we got fed up and stood up to settle the bill. We asked for our canceled part of the meal to be taken off the bill---a kind man did so. And as we walked out... They gave us the box of takeaway order anyway, by this point stone cold! SAVING GRACE= We headed out to the inn next door to have a much needed digestive drink and were greeted amicably, warmly, genuinely - the food on the plates there looked so much better too. FINAL WORDS We will make sure to tell the owner of the guesthouse where we are sleeping to Not Recommend the Pennington hotel ever again.

Stayed for one night as we were going on the Virgin steam train experience from nearby Ravenglass train station. The room was large with an equally large bathroom and separate shower. Rooms were spotlessly clean and good value. Quite creaky floorboards and view of the post office opposite sadly no estuary views. Car park to the rear with 2charging spots. Breakfast let down the experience and was extremely poor. Eggs Benedict was served with one egg hard in the centre with cold sauce poured on top. My avocado on sour bread was discoloured and inedible covered with 2pieces if bacon that was overcooked. At no point were we asked if all was okay with breakfast and on checkout staff did not ask how we enjoyed our stay. This is a very quiet village with a pub and hotel owned by the same family. The pub was welcoming and did offer some alternative to the hotel. I wouldn't visit again because of the lack of customer service after paying quite a lot for an upgraded room. The only plus was it was near the station otherwise we would have looked for an alternative

Just spent a week in Ravenglass with the family, and we wanted to treat ourselves with what we thought would be a nice meal. Walked in to speak with a member of staff, and was met with attitude stating the they were full, whic is not an issue at all, I get you cant accommadate for a whole village! But there is not need for attitude, so unwelcoming, really hostile and there is no need! This rudeness was echoed by manager who was sat down on the sofa, who couldnt be bothered to get up and have a discussion, just shot to echo the same sentiments of the member of staff! There are other options within walking distance, which again you have to book for, but you get no attitude, rudeness or hassle! Avoid this place, unless you enjoy rudeness with your meal/drink!

We ate twice in the restaurant while staying in the nearby caravan park. Both times we were extremely satisfied with the food. Portions were incredibly generous and everyrhing we chose from the menu (different each time) was delicious. Am always nervous ordering a steak as have had some howlers, but felt it would be perfectly cooked, and it was. Service was efficient and relaxed with no feeling of being pressured to order or finish quickly, adding to the enjoyment. Would recommend booking as was fairly busy both nights and not huge staff. Decor of the hotel was modern and welcoming and a good selection of drinks at the bar.

Really good value for money if you want a nicer meal than just pub grub. This restaurant set within the Hotel, certainly exceeded my expectations for flavours and portion sizes. The Mixed starters two main courses a bottle of wine and a pint of Italian beer came in at a very pleasant £77. There were the usual favourites for all the family on the menu but with a slightly Cumbrian twist. Delicious would definitely return

The music in the bar is brilliant very 80’s I thought they were using my playlist from the car.The breakfast has a great choice including smoked salmon and kippers can’t fault the food. Have to say the service was immaculate - the response to COVID19 was as good as anywhere else and the food was good quality. Very tasty and fresh. Our entire party enjoyed it. However, the price did not match the environment and the food - for me it felt a little expensive. Loads of food, mushy peas and tartar sauce & the nicest homemade chips :) quality justified the price as we couldnt eat it all as there was that much. Dining room was light and airy.We are due back in a few weeks and will be paying another visit.

Booked a family room for myself, wife and out 3 children for 1 night. Arrived at the hotel, which from the outside looks a bit run down, however once inside it was actually quite modern and freshly renovated. Coronavirus measures where all in place with staff all wearing face masks etc, unfortunately things took a turn for the worst. Shown to our Family room and it looked nice. Went in the bathroom and was faced with a poo in the toilet, along with urine around the bowl. After calling reception a nice lady came in to clean the bathroom, whilst apologising unreservedly. Not a good start especially with COVID and supposed extra cleaning being in place. Had a nice meal in the resteraunt and went back to our room. When my wife was turning the children's beds down, she noticed a strong perfume smell at the head and of the bedding, peeling the covers back further we found the sheets wrinkled and creased as though they'd been slept in previously and not changed. Rang reception again and a guy came up apologising again, saying he will get the beds changed immediately then offered us new rooms, albeit separate from the children. After consideration we decided to check out at 11:30 pm and have a refund on the room rate. We then had to drive through the lake district in the pitch black, arriving home at 2:30am (A590 totally closed to make matters worse). Holiday ruined.I've waited 4 days for management to contact us to give an explanation but nothing, so here is my review. This type of attitude towards cleanliness is just not good enough at this time of coronavirus.

My husband and I decided to stay for one night because our friends where in their motorhome and staying on a nearby site, it was our first night away after my husband had been shielding for 14 weeks and because we had cancelled 5 previous holidays abroad where looking forward to getting away even for one night. Upon arrival we asked for directions to the car park, the bar man said the car park was just behind the hotel, directions not very clear and if you take a wrong turning you do end up in the pay and display care park, the hotel car park is opposite down a light side road, ample spaces and no problem parking. We met our friends at the hotel as we where a little early for check in so sat in the courtyard and had a drink, check in was 3.00pm, at around 3.15 I went to reception to check in and the duty manager on shift gave me the room key, I went to the room but the room was not made up and dirty towels still on the bathroom floor, I went to reception to let them know and the young bar man seemed a bit embarrassed and offered us some drink whilst we waited, we waited for about 15 minutes so went to check on the drinks to which the duty manager was quite rude, hence no drinks. I informed the duty manager we where going for a walk and would be back within the hour and hopefully by then the room would be ready. We managed to check in at 5.00pm! The room was lovely with plenty with plenty of tea and coffee and biscuits, good sized bathroom with fresh towels but very limited toilettries, bed was comfortable, tv, wardrobe with iron and ironing board. We booked a table for an evening meal for the two of us plus our two friends, restaurant complied with safe distancing and was clean and the food was really lovely. Upon departure we did have to wait for a while to check out and I did have to ask several times to various staff members that we wanted to check out again same duty manager came to check us out and tried to charge us twice for the evening meal which we paid for the previous night, duty manager was very rude and did have a bit of an attitude. I understand that these times are very difficult and things are not as normal as they should be but I did get the impression that the staff where not prepared for the hotel being open and maybe had booked too many people in to stay rather than concentrating on a few guests and getting it right they filled the hotel and possibly got it wrong, Ravenglass is a lovely little village however there is not much to do there unless you like to do a lot of walking, my first stay in a hotel after lockdown for me was not a good experience maybe during normal circumstances this hotel would improve

We stayed here recently for two nights and ate ate the restaurant twice. The staff were great: they were obviously working very hard to deal with a lot of guests but we were taken care of in a timely and friendly manner each time we needed something. The rooms were a good size and clean, though a little dated. The restaurant food was lovely (good pub grub style food with a few more ‘refined’ options available). Perfect location for walking and exploring the slightly quieter side of the Lake District.

We booked a meal at the Pennington Hotel on the Saturday evening and was pleasantly surprised with the quality of the food and the service. The restaurant was set up with the Covid-19 restrictions applied for social distancing and we were lucky enough to have a table near the window over looing the estuary. The food was tasty, well presented and reasonably priced.

Our first visit after lockdown, everything was clearly layed out. Food was of a good standard even at reduced scale, ravioli was tasteful and portion sizes where good. Cheesecake dessert was lovely. Service was prompt even with reduced staff, all staff where in ppe except one waiter who sometimes had a mask/ protective visor, that was a little bit off putting but other than that we felt safe on our visit.

Our first meal out after lockdown was disappointing, starter portions ridiculously small for the price, Ravioli was lacking in taste and seasoning and the ploughman's appeared to have supermarket ham and pork pie on it. Not what I expected from one of my favourite eating places. Not once throughout the meal were we asked if everything was OK which I would of expected.

After a long walk we arrived back at ravenglass at 3:30 and found the ratty arms were no longer serving food however they told us this hotel was....We entered and found the staff very friendly and quickly ordered the fish and chips and a vegetable cassoulet. Both were very tasty, only slight downside were the chips were a little hard but we still ate them so they can't have been that bad!2 meals and 4 comes were £31.Would recommend.

From the minute we walked in to the minute we left, we were looked after, service and staff where excellent and very friendly. Our dog was made very welcome and spolit. Our room was very large and comfortable. We called in at the inn at ravenglass which is part of the hotel for an afternoon drink, lovely views of the estuary and a great atmosphere. Good choice of real ales and a great cider. We had evening meal in the bar area of the hotel with our dog. It was amazing, great choice for all courses and a lovely wine choice. Again we were looked after so well. We would have loved to have stayed another night but the hotel was fully booked up. This is the most genuinely dog friendly place we have stayed in. We will return with or without the dog. Thank you to all the staff for making our stay very enjoyable. We will see you again.

Called in whilst on a short break in the area. A handy place to eat on a very bad night. Unfortunately one chef was missing so they weren't open to non residents but as the dining area was very quiet we were accepted but had to eat in the bar area. One member of staff was very welcoming the other not so. 8/10 for pub style meals. A fish menu advertised for October looked very interesting.

The bar is dingy and the waitress could have been a lot more friendly, She brought our lager to our table and it dripped everywhere. She made no attempt to wipe it up and we used the serviettes. When she passed by I asked her to wipe the table as it was sticky by then and she did this reluctantly. The burger was Ok,, the bun stale, the chips perfect and the salad garnish OK. We have been before in the Winter and found a better level of service altogether. I felt that the young waitress needed supervision. Will we be back? Probably not.

Visited whilst on a family holiday in Ravenglass. Good location close to the Estuary & easy to park. The food was good. Much improved since our last visit several years ago. The bar had a lovely atmosphere & the local artist (whose paintings we love) had an exhibition on. Dog friendly. Clean toilets. The only reason I’ve given it a 4 is the wine list was very poor.

We were staying in the vicinity and arrived at the restaurant quite late and without a booking but they graciously accommodated us. The hostess was very friendly and efficient and the food was excellent. We ordered the main meal fish and chips and the lamb stew, both of which were excellent quality and more than sufficient portions. We will definitely be back if we are nearby again.

Just returned from a 2 day visit to Ravenglass and we loved this place, on arrival we got given the room on the top floor which had superb views of the bay, only a couple of minutes from the Train station, rooms nice and clean, great tea selection, popped downstairs to check out the bar, staff all super friendly and funny, the restaurant is the hidden gem of this place, cracking food, had the fish and chips which was really good, following night had the steak pie which was delicious, the food was a lot more modern than I expected for the area, the takeout option is also genius, I would 100% recommended this to anyone, lovely place for a beautiful village

Want to be able to give it more stars :/ Nice to have a chip shop in such a small village. Easy to find, nice young woman behind the counter. As she was cooking the fish, I thought - hmm- should be now.... or now... or now. Well, so probably was, so a bit overcooked. Chips were good (glad I saw her salt/vinegar an order or 2 before mine so I could say 'no, thank you' to waaaay too much salt. Got an order of cold slaw. Ok - was a serving of mayo with some cabbage in it. Hope they consider some adjustments! Then would recommend.

This place is unreal! Honestly you could not write how bad it is, it’s that bad you just have to laugh. There is absolutely no organisation at all. There were 3 waiting on members of staff, none of which had a clue. They wandered around aimlessly with food & drinks with absolutely no idea what table they were for. They were in & out of the kitchen with the same plates of food, it was just bizarre. One table, while we were there, were given their mains at the same time as their starters! We had to ask for our table to be cleared, if you asked for anything it took them at least 20 minutes. I have never seen such poor service. Food was ok, nothing special. The only reason to return would be the comedy value, you cannot believe your eyes!

Shockingly dirty for a place serving food. Chairs an absolute disgrace. Dirty, stained, marked. I'm amazed environmental health hasn't been in and told them to get them cleaned. If it was only one I could have attempted to make some sort of excuse. But it wasn't. A group of us had gone for lunch but we all decided to find somewhere else. I'm honest baffled how Dixons are getting away with it? The Terrace cafe in Workington put this place to shame. I'm amazed people were eating there. We wouldn't go back. Pictures enclosed. Zoom in guys. Truly mehhhh 🙈🤮

I’ve been here a number of times and I have enjoyed it every time. The pub is set in beautiful surroundings. The atmosphere is happy and relaxed as it’s full of likeminded outdoorsy types. The food is tasty and has good portion sizes.
