We visited the pelican a couple of weeks ago for a family dinner. The couple running it were really welcoming and friendly and we were spoilt for choice on the menu. There were also different specials for different days of the week like burger and a pint giving great value for money. My daughter is a fuss pot and the chef was so accommodating to her happy to make any changes to suit her with a no hassle attitude. Thoroughly enjoyed our evening we will be back soon.

Took my fiancée and 89 year old mother here for some lunch. My mum ordered a small sausage and chips as she's not a big eater. My fiancée ordered some fries. I ordered halloumi baguette with sautéed red pepper, chilli maple sauce and fries. We waited 50 minutes for the order to arrive whereupon we were told the single order of fries would arrive soon, 5 minutes later in fact. My baguette was very disappointing as it had 6 pieces of deep fried breaded halloumi, some slices of red pepper (not sauteed) and fries. The fries were ok to be fair but overall it was a plate of dry and bland food, the sauce was nothing close to a maple flavour and the halloumi was obviously out of the Lidl freezer department. Mum enjoyed her food but her sausage and chips came with peas which she never asked for. At no point did anyone apologise for the 50-55 minutes we had to wait, or ask us how our food was. The service was lacking. Upon leaving we were charged for a standard sausage and chips even though we'd asked for a small plate. What amazes me is why we had to wait so long? There was only one other table of people having food in the entire pub. We won't be returning. A very miserable experience. There's a garage next door that sells sandwiches, I'd recommend you go there instead.

Booked for an absolute bargain price £81 for 2 double rooms Christmas Eve. We couldn’t check in until 9pm and was welcomed by a lovely man. I was very grateful for the accommodating reception. The pub looks lovely, didn’t have food or drinks so can’t comment on that however the rooms although were cheap unfortunately were sadly very dated, tv was 19 inch maximum and no reception. There were patches of black mould around the rooms. The shower was not clean. The mattress had definitely seen better days. Unfortunately we were just grateful of a bed for the night at that time and what day it was. It was noisy overlooking a smoking area but I accept that can’t be helped however a very drunk woman was trying to get into our room at 12 pm ! Unfortunately the lady was in a room next to my daughter and kept her awake shouting until gone 1am. I do realise this isn’t the hotel’s fault. Bad nights sleep due to mattress. Would be brilliant with a makeover and a bit of attention. Great location close to Stonehenge. Really hope it’s a work in progress because it would be a great stay.

The Pelican could be a little gem, but needs a little work to bring it up to standards. Pub & Restaurant: This little country side pub has plenty of character. Overall the inside was clean. The deco is a little dated and few of the chairs are in need of fresh upholstery. Outside there is an undercover seating area with moonlighting and a patio heater, which leads into a lawn that overlooks a small brook. During the summer months, I am sure the garden is lovely and as expected over the winter months, shows it's been battered by the elements. The biggest downside to the garden was the amount of discarded cigarette butts laying on the floor. Staff: All the staff seemed very friendly, but a couple wasn't quite sure what was/wasn't on the menu, but I'm sure with a little training, they'll shine through. Food: I wouldn't go as far as saying it's excellent, but it's ok. The first night I had lasagne with chips and cheesy garlic bread. The lasagne did seem to be fresh and tasted very delicious, but was accompanied by frozen chips (that seemed to have been the bottom of the bag, because I got a fair few scraps) rather than some chunky chips. The cheesy garlic bread again was shop bought with some cheddar sprinkled on top, which I can live with and tasted ok. This would have been an excellent dish, if the chips hadn't let it down. The second night, I had a Sunday roast. At first we were told they had sold out of roast then the chef came through to say that he could still do us one, he just didn't have any carrots! I'm amazed they even considered taking it off the menu because they didn't have any carrots left. The beef was cooked to absolute perfection along with the sprouts, broccoli and Yorkshire pudding. The roast potatoes however were a little done for my liking. There was no mash and I would recommend that it's added to the menu. Room: The room is basic and a little dated. The mattress was a little too soft to the point where you can feel the springs and the base of the Divan. It was clean enough at ground level with a couple of cobwebs in the corners of the ceilings. The bathroom and shower was clean enough and there were plenty of commodities provided for making tea and coffee. The room was a little cold over the winter months, there are little electric heaters, but they could do with something a bit more powerful. The quilt could do with being a couple of tog higher too. They do enter your room during your stay to clean and make the beds. Personally I don't like this and would prefer to let staff know if I need clean towels and sheets. Rooms 1 & 2 do have to put up with some noise nuisance mainly being other guests using the undercover seating area as a smoking area. It can be quite loud when you're trying to sleep. There is traffic noise from the road, but nothing that major. Overall our stay was good and I believe in leaving honest reviews. I believe the current landlord/owner are quite new and started to make changes. Would I go back? Yes of course, this place has plenty of potential and with some tlc, they'll get there.

Was passing here so stopped in for lunch. The young girl at the bar was wrapping cutlery from a grey container, while touching her long hair and phone then picking the “mouth” end of the forks and wrapping them in a white tissue. Her friend was playing with her long hair over the cutlery. Pretty darn unhygienic. The food tastes and looks like lower end/budget food from a freezer (but then their prices do not reflect high-end). The “salad” looked and tasted like it was the low quality bagged stuff. Chips…. greasy and the oil needs changing or use a new oil!! In fact change those chips or make your own from fresh potatoes and charge more!! Drinks glass had lipstick. Drink wasn’t nice anyway so left half of it. It had zero fizz! Ladies toilets smelt of musty urine and had no toilet roll. It was very cheap however. Just as well. One tired place and quite an “experience” !

It was 6:45pm on Sunday of a busy bank holiday weekend and the kitchen was closed. It is not easy running a friendly local pub in current circumstances but the team at the Pelican have managed it. The menu is a good balance of traditional and different (halloumi salad with giant couscous was very nice). The beer is well kept and there seemed to be a good mixture of locals and passers-by. There is a very big garden out the back which leads down to the river so plenty of room for kids to play and also for a lot of customers to sit out in the sun or on the patio which is covered in passion flowers. We will definitely be going back.

Completely shocked at how bad this was- turned up for Sunday lunch- no other options on menu apart from roast dinner , went for the pork, roast potatoes were like rocks, the whole meal except the meat had been cooked from frozen- balls of stuffing watery veg that tasted like the microwave bag type, no crackling! Who on earth serves roast pork with no crackling ? Ordered kids meal of sausage and chips- chips had black flecks all over them - dirty bits from the fryer I’m assuming, And to top it all they delivered the plate to my 3 year old and said oh the plates really hot! What! Completely gob smacked at how bad this was , If you want to bring money back in after lock down you’ve got to be better than this surelyDon’t think the chef is very experienced - well any self respecting chef couldn’t be Party to food like that, so don’t think there could have been a chef. Telephoned & they say cannot (or will not) do refunds for payments but only prepared give credit against next order.... don't think I'll be going back & I live 1/2 mile from them in the same village. It's not the money but principles & attitudes. As before this remains a place to avoid.

lovely front of house staff and eager to please, the chef however needs to go hes bringing down a perfectly good pub and owners.bland food which he refuses to acknowledge and blames poor meat or veg for the way its cooked and is rude when asked about this.thats the only thing that ruined a good night .

At long last, my local has turned a corner, I have had 2 steak meals in as many weeks both have been perfectly cooked. All meals for my family and friends have been commented on highly. Am hoping Steve and Tammy go from strength to strength in their new venture. It’s good for the village of Stapleford!

Tammy and Steve have just taken over are doing a great job bringing this great pub back to life. With the passion thay shown I'm sure thay will. This is definitely a place I will stop In every time I'm visiting. Its on the A36, which is great for popping to stonehenge (around 4 miles away), has a petrol station next door .Large garden which will be great for the summer, wood fire oven outside as well. River runs along the side which is nice. Can't wait to visit again.Richard and deb.

Stopped off here on the way to Codford on a Saturday afternoon before Christmas for a late lunch. Nice old ‘proper’ English pub with a few farm instruments around to give it ambiance. Friendly service from the barman/server. I had a double classic burger with cheese which was enormous and really nice. Good quality, coarse meat very well done which I prefer. My mother in law had hunter’s chicken which she enjoyed and my wife had the fisherman’s feast which looked good and she really enjoyed. Overall a good lunch at a really good price. Will stop off there again next time we’re that way.

Came here for a family meal. First time visiting this pub and I can say we shall be returning!! absolutely beautiful place! Good food prices. Me and my wife both had the gammon steak for £6! And it was delicious!! Good portion sizes. Couldn’t fault the food at all, apart from our children’s meal, the baked beans were stone cold but was soon fixed with fresh from a lovely women, believe her name was Jen, very welcoming and polite and gave us wonderful service!! the plus side was we could bring our 2 dogs in with us to join our family meal! which was very good! we shall be returning and have booked for a Sunday roast. Highly recommend.

We stopped off on our way back from the South West for Sunday dinner (early evening) and was very disappointed indeed. We both ordered a roast (pork & beef). My pork seemed like the ends of the meat, not slices which was supposed to come with stuffing, crackling & apple sauce - none of which was forthcoming. When I asked I was told they had run out. The broccoli & carrots were OK (how can you mess that up) but the cauliflower cheese (which we paid extra for) was terrible; I don't believe it was cooked in the oven, but rather boiled caulliflower which had cheese sauce poured over it and then microwaved - but it was still frozen on the bottom. Last but not least was the Yorkshire pudding. I can honestly say it looked more like a very soggy undercooked flat pancake. My husband's beef was OK but the rest of our meals I would not have fed to the cat (Sparky). Not a pleasant experience and one we will definitely not be repeating !

Travelling with the family to Bath, on a cold and rainy Autumn day. A really pleasant surprise, finding on the road this delicious country pub! Warm, welcoming and excellently furnished. In particular, we enjoyed the lovely dining room, tastefully carved out of an old stable barn. A friendly and kind service and also an affectionate welcome for our little dog! We didn't have much time, so we ordered quick dishes & pubs' favourites, such as burgers and fish & chips. The food was well cooked and arrived on the table very quickly. Nothing extraordinary, but a very nice and pleasant stop along the way!

We visited by chance when travelling home from a week holiday. The lunch deal was delicious and very good value for money. The owner was very helpful friendly, providing us with water to heat up our babies bottle. Could not fault the visit. As for the resident cat, we loved her! I think people in previous reviews need to loosen up abit, at the end of the day I understand not everyone likes animals but the owner was very quick to offer to get her away from us... she was an added bonus for us though!

This used to be a fab little pub to get home cooked food from. Perfect half way between salisbury and Warminster! Unfortunately, standards have seriously dropped. When ordering our Sunday lunches, we advised the bar staff that I have a dairy, egg and soya allergy. I’d like a roast but to please omit anything containing these 3 ingredients. The rest of our party (another 3 adults, 2 children and 1 baby) all ordered roasts (not the baby!). It took about 40mins to be called to our table. We didn’t mind as we were all catching up in the gardens. We sat at our “ready” table, no cutlery.... waited and waited.... eventually, 10 mins later, food arrived. Mine came with a Yorkshire puddings. Not one to make a fuss, I just removed it from my plate, knowing it would contain egg, maybe even dairy. Then I was told I could not eat it and they had to change it as the gravy had soya in it. One of the dinners was served with a plate of fat for meat. All of the veg had seen better days. It looked like it had been left of the side for half the day to dry and then microwaved. Not edible by anyone’s standards. Then, to have a laugh, we started paying with the Yorkshire puddings - rock solid!! We had a job breaking one in to pieces !! See pics!! I know we shouldn’t play with food but with 2 children and a baby, we had to find some amusement! Note we still were waiting for cutlery... eventually the manager came... “What’s the problem”? He aggressively asked!! Wow! He proceeded to inform us it was his day off and he had come to sort out our problems! Where to start hey?!

Very let down by this restaurant. The food was poor at best and as for me it was not home made. The service was very slow and the bar staff didn't really seem bothered about the customers. There wasn't anything that they got completely right on our meal choices and some of the advertised dishes were not available.and bits missing from our meals i.e. gravy and worst of all all our meals were cold or just warm . we could not be bothered to send it all back we would of been there all day

Stopped in for a quick bite to eat on our long journey home. Had a couple of burgers. Food was very nice. The staff were polite and happy to help. Food came quickly and was hit. Whilst eating our dinner however, we were joined by the ‘local cat’. Not my idea of a good experience. The cat was jumping up at our legs, begging for food, and staring at us throughout our whole meal. Very off putting. Makes you question the hygiene of the premises. Shame

We went for lunch yesterday, the pub was quite busy but no way near full. We got drinks at the bar and were given menus, we decided to sit inside and found a table and looked at the menus. We waited over 15 minutes before someone came to ask what we’d like, we wanted to know what the soup was and on asking the waitress “she didn’t know” and had to ask!!!!! Surely specials and soup of the day should be advised to the staff at a briefing at the start of the shift, so on her return we finally ordered. We waited, and waited 25 minutes for the soup to arrive, yes it was very nice and tasty and homemade and we enjoyed it. The mains arrived about 10 mins after the bowls were cleared, well, the fish batter was soggy and the fish not very white inside quite grey, it was ok, the mushy peas were tepid and the tartar sauce tasted watery. It was like it had been sat on the side for 5/10 mins not the best fish and chips at all, the next dish was sausage and mash with peas and onion gravy, the sausages were basic and just 2 of them, on a dollop of under seasoned mash and Garvey with a few onions in, very, very basic.

The roast was horrendous , the yorkshire puddings were so thick i couldn’t even cut my knife with them and they didn’t even look like yorkshire puddings. I didn’t even eat it , i just picked at it and then pushed the plate away after 2 minutes of receiving the food , the meat was atrocious. It was such a waste of food , can’t believe the chef had this audacity to serve such terrible food. Used to be so beautiful in there under the old owners . Congratulations for serving the worst roast dinner in Britain.

Chose The Pelican as a half way point between family members, not a good choice! It was just awful! It started with a lipstick covered glass and went downhill from there. Over an hour wait for our food, even though there were only 3 other occupied tables. When it did eventually come, the food was almost inedible - deep fried chicken, roast potatoes like nothing I've ever eaten before, cauliflower cheese with no cheese, dry Yorkshire puddings, etc, etc, just horrible!! During our visit, one couple walked out leaving their food and another family were given their desserts for free as they had to wait so long. If you're looking for an enjoyable, relaxing meal avoid the Pelican!!!

We are relatively local to this pub, thought we would give it a try as our local was fully booked for Sunday lunch. Very below average lunch, my pork was under cooked, the roast potatoes were pale, the veg was under cooked, the Yorkshire puddings were dry, the cauliflower cheese was just cauliflower with white sauce, no cheese and served in a cold dish. Pudding was ok, but probably because it was just ice cream! Should have complained I guess, should have just drove past seeing the car park was empty, alarm bells should have also rang when we saw the manager/owner/bar man come back from the garage next door eating a pre packed sandwich! Hindsight is a wonderful thing. My advise is drive past no matter how hungry you are, or stop in the garage and pick up a pre packed sandwich instead. Much nicer pubs along the way.

Popped into the Pelican for an early evening dinner after a days shopping in Salisbury. My wife and I had eaten here several times in the past and had always had great food. Sadly this time we were disappointed. The pub looked tired and in need of a major facelift. The barman was friendly and helpful, but there were greasy fingerprints on the tables and crumbs on the seats and floor. The food was nothing special. My wifes burger was supposed to come with a toasted sesame seed bun, but arrived with a dry white bun and very ordinary burger. My mixed grill had a very tough piece of steak and peas as hard as bullets. Frankly it was more transport cafe than good pub grub.we won't be visiting again soon.
