We have eaten here many times in the last year or two. The food we have had has been consistently top quality. The menu tends to consist of around 20 items presented on a chalk board with some wonderful twists on classic dishes. A wonderful list of wines. Portions are on the generous side and the staff are wonderful which all comes together to give a full "gastro-pub" experience which combines with one of the friendliest locals I have ever been into.

We visited as a stop off on a long journey, we were greated warmly and although we arrived before there normal food service time, our order was taken and food prepared early. You can't ask for better service. The food itself was lovely, no complaints at all, it was nice ingredients prepared well. The price was average for the types of meals but worth it for the quality. Well done.

Met friends for a traditional pub lunch the week before Christmas but chose the wrong place here.I settled for a chicken sandwich after discovering that we could not get a ploughmans lunch or a fresh meat pie dish. Very disappointing it was too, though the bread at least was fresh and crusty, and the plate was full of bland salad greens. Busy but no excuse for not getting the simple things right.

Myself, my sister and dad recently visited the Hit or Miss on a Table Pouncer deal mid-week. The pub decor is a little dated which was a bit off putting to start with but the service was wonderful and the food excellent. It's not fine dining but you wouldn't want it to be. It's just good, honest, pub grub. No fancy, frills! The staff were very friendly and really went out of their way to make us feel at home. Infact after our three courses, plenty of wine, cheese and port we didn't want to leave! As a family we do like to eat out together regularly and we think we've found our new local. Would highly recomend for anyone who fancies a cosy, village pub with hearty food. Enjoy!

My fiancé and I went here on a Sunday afternoon when most pubs had stopped serving. We were greeted by a friendly barman and made to feel welcome even though we were the only couple in there. We had the choice from a limited specials menu which was fair enough given the time, however never felt as though we were a burden. We both ordered ham, egg & chips which although it might not be at the height of culinary difficulty, the ham was delicious and the chips were cooked perfectly. Very nice indeed. Forget these generic gastro pubs with food on roof tiles and pretentious music, this is a proper pub that has a friendly atmosphere and good, honest grub; a rarity.

The table had breen reserved but was very close to the doorway, which was odd as there were many other tables in the body of the room that were empty all night. The menu choice was limited, and we thought a little on the high side, our mains came in a reasonable time, followed by the sweets ( £5 a go ) food was reasonable but that's all. We were staying at the nearby Plough Lane Adult only caravan park, which is a 20 minute walk from the Hit or Miss. The pub is a very attractive old property with a welcoming atmosphere and good 'olde worlde' décor. Sadly, they employ a system where you have to order your food & drink at different bars!!Why on earth the waitress cant take your drinks order as well as your food order beats me!! However, the food was good, hot and tasty. As we were staying nearby we were given a voucher for 20% off our food and drinks so all in all it was good value for a 2 course Sunday roast.

Needed to meet someone at a convenient location and used my Places of East Just off the Motorway book (probably not its official title but something similar). The Hit and Miss seemed suitable and what a find it was. Friendly staff, lovely traditional village pub atmosphere and an excellent fish lunch - two had the fish and chips and said it was excellent and I had a very nice fish bucket - a shell fish platter in a, well, in a bucket ..... Only a couple of bitters on offer, but as with a comparatively small menu, better to do a few things very well than an array of mediocre. I'd definitely be back if I was in the neighbourhood, or if I can find a reason to be back in the neighbourhood.

This must have changed hands since our last visit and not for the better. Too many tables so we were all squashed in, a fire with little flame and lots of smoke. If you are going to serve roast lunches, the waitress should know whether the beef is rare or not. The vegetables were not seasoned and I have no idea what the roast potatoes were cooked in. Felt like stepping into the Bull in Ambridge, complete with a diverse set of characters. Being somewhat tucked away it seems not to receive much passing trade and thus revolves around recurring local trade. Nothing wrong with that, but when we dropped in for lunch recently we were only grudgingly welcomed.A shame as the menu was a little different to typical pub fare (eg venison, partridge) and was very well cooked. Would return for the food, but....

I visited The Hit or Miss a while back and think it will be a while before I bother going back... I had a burger that had past it's best, just didn't taste right, obviously it was homemade/bought from a butcher but where it was so thick it had to be cooked for so long which unfortunately made it terribly dry and it was plonked in a cheese topped bap from Morrisons, this leads me to my next point... My friend had the spinach and ricotta tortelloni. Morrisons do a great spinach and ricotta tortelloni on their fresh pasta counter, 2 bags for £2.50 (I'd say about 4 pub sized portions), they also do a fresh roasted vegetable sauce for about £1.50 (2 portions)... The chef must have thought that it was so great they decided to put it on the specials board for £10.50 pp, definitely sourced from Morrisons, I do not consider this to be 'special', I consider this to be a case of a bone idle chef who just popped to Morrisons to fetch something to fill up the specials board, fair play though massive return on this dish, probably cost you £1.50 to produce once you chucked a bit of salad in a bowl... £9 return, Good effort!

Pity that I don't live near, otherwise I would visit quite often trying various of the menus. I was spoilt for choice. If you are ever down near this pub, you must try it. We dined here with friends in May in this traditional village pub and had a very enjoyable meal. The food was tantalisingly good and the atmosphere was lovely. The staff were friendly and attentive throughout the meal but upon arrival and once seated at our table it wasn't made clear that we were to view the menu on the wall to make our selections and then our order would be taken. As the menu is placed by a table used for other diners you feel slightly uncomfortable having to look over them to view the menu board. Apart from that we couldn't fault the beautifully cooked food and would return.

My partner and I go to the Hit or Miss at least once a month but usually more often. And we have been doing so for the last 6 years! Suzan the Chef is creative with her menu, yet not in a pretentious sort of way. Instead, she regularly adds new items to her menu that we wish other pubs and restaurants would offer more often. Her lamb tagine is beautiful and the tasty kedgeree never goes amiss. All tastes are catered for: even if you just fancy a simply dish, you will not be disappointed by her haddock and chips with a genuinely light and crispy batter. There are other local pubs where the menu gets changed once a season if you are lucky. Whereas at the Hit or Miss, we always find something new to try, despite going so often - and we are always delighted. Service is excellent too, always accommodating and polite.

Hubby and I ate at this pub a while back but were unimpressed by the way I (as a coeliac) was treated, and vowed never to return. However, we did, today, as part of a group of about 24. Several people said their salmon wasn't cooked properly, one had undercooked duck that had to be replaced, and there were other issues (no gluten-free bread even though they knew a coeliac would be there). I told a waitress my salmon wasn't cooked through, but no-one came back to me. Service is hopeless (one waitress stretched across on front of me with a plateful of roast dinner, to reach my friend); no-one checked whether our food was ok.It takes a lifetime to gain good customers, and 30 seconds to lose them and their friends and families.Definitely Miss, not Hit.

I think the bad review was a bit of uncalled for. It looks like a family pub with friendly locals and I concur to others who gave a good review. We were group of 3 couples with 4 children of 6-9 years and a 21months baby. We booked 30 mins prior arriving to the pub and our place was ready. We ordered plenty of food, ale (recommended), wine and soft drinks, all in which arrived in time. Even if it did come late, we didnt mind considering for a family pub, the chef had to cook for 6 adults and 4 children. The manager was kind to offer kid's size fish & chips and was prepared to charge 1/2 the value. The fillet steak was cooked perfectly to medium rare with the sides and the sauce was brilliant. The locals came in later with few friendly dog, which my 21month old son was fond to...and since then the dog just loved playing with us.I was a bit sceptical about this restaurant at the begininiing after reading the bad review and didnt want to experience the same but any business could have had a bad day, it doesnt mean its a business. Will go there again if I do drive down to that part of the world and would recommend to anyone who comes across this pub on tripadvisor.

If 20+ diners is too much for you to deal with, either warn us when we phoned to book a table or refuse to take the booking. The menu as advertised on the website was nothing like the menu we were presented with (only 4 mains listed, 1 of which was off!). I travel a lot and at every opportunity I eat here and if I am entertaining then this is always my destination eaterie, the food is always consistently amazing, reasonably priced and well presented. The cask ales are good and well kept, and the wine list is Very good. Keep it up as you have been doing for the last god knows how many years because its very very good and thank you x

Lovely pub that I was introduced to by a friend who lives 200+ miles away but always calls in to this pub when in the area on business - now that really does speak volumes.I have visited a few more times with family for Sunday lunch and evening dinner. The food is really delicious and always spoilt for choice (I am still raving about a gorgeous meal I had there over 12 months ago!). Along with the traditional Sunday lunch there are always a tasty selection of alternative options.Service is always relaxed and never rushed even when the diner has that last minute indecisive moment about their two favorite dishes.Well worth a visit and look forward to going again :)

The Hit or Miss is a lovely Pub with excellent food. They have a good solid daily menu with an excellent 'specials' board. It is nice to eat outside when the sun is shining and inside when it mostly isn't! I take visitors fairly regularly at lunch times, who always enjoy the food. If the food and beer doesn't attract you then the barmaid just might make the difference! :o)

We've eaten here a few times, and have just had a brilliant Sunday lunch! Warm, welcoming and great helpful staff - it's got all of the ambience you expect from a local country pub - it was busy which tells you how good a place it is. The food is never disappointing and very reasonably priced - Looking forward to going again soon.

Totally agree with last month's reviewer. We are not exactly local but frequently make our way here for Sunday lunch and have never been disappointed.

I have eaten at the Hit or Miss a few times now and it is always a great evening out. The staff are very friendly and accomodating, the food is unforgettable and the atmosphere is brilliant. They are a prime example of what an village pub is supposed to be like! Warm and welcoming, great home made food and above all serves doombar!

I visited Friday 11th October to a very busy bar. My server was John who was quick, prompt and friendly… Will definitely be back and recommend.

Aware this has been recently opened having been closed for many months - I sadly feel if they don’t improve this pub it will close again it has the potential to be a lovely homely pub but at present it’s very tired & need of some TLC as it’s looking very tired & old and says something when it only offers two very basic gins

For a quick bite to eat, it was okay. Table service was a little abrupt. Food was good and filled a hole. Would return if in the town again.
