Occasionally go to this reliable pub with friendly staff but .... today their 'phone system wouldn't let me through to make a booking - it would have taken 30 seconds of their time perhaps. We were directed inexorably to a convoluted booking system "Confirm you have read our terms and conditions" - never did that on the 'phone, and, after battling through the booking the friendly, patronising voice describing their "lovely bedrooms" turned officious with dire warnings about being late, sitting too long at the table etc. Looking forward to our meal there, but won't book again unless I can get through to a helpful human to book.

Charming country pub nestled in the bucolic village of Longstock, with a fly fishing heritage close to the banks of the world famous River Test. Fab food, historic scotch egg, banging lamb, and an incredibly dangerous peanut butter parfait. All washed down with several glasses of the ‘perfect G&T’. Exceptional service by Shelly and her team. What a pleasure to visit a pub where there are slightly unusual dishes on offer to choose from! We met our friends who also have a dog, for lunch after a walk nearby and we spoiled for choice from the delicious sounding menu. We had a selection of dishes from the 'snack' menu, which were delicious and ample enough as a starter. Two of us had the monkfish, which was super and the other two chose the rib of beef and lamb, all pronounced beautifully cooked. Two desserts appeared, very prettily presented and a cheeseboard for the other two to share. A super pub where our dogs were made very welcome and lovely food, an excellent find worth seeking out.

Hmmmm… sorry team (although all staff are very friendly!) our visit to your hotel and restaurant was a huge disappointment. Bedrooms in main building are suffering some considerable wear and tear and have a funky smell. Shower was leaky and shower door didn’t shut properly - bathroom door didn’t shut either. Then dinner… we’ve eaten here before and had some excellent food but wow… sadly you’ve really gone down hill. It’s such a shame guys. Padron peppers were soggy and over cooked. The squid was deep fried to hell and tasteless. The burger was obviously a very cheap Iceland-esq frozen patty (the bun was also stale) and your trout tacos consisted of guacamole from mass produced multi kg tubs and fairly pungent poached trout - tacos should always be fried! All in all - I’m sorry… I know COVID has been tough and your staff are lovely but it’s a shame that your online pictures do not reflect the true state of your accommodation and the food quality has completely slipped away. £125 a night is too much - at the moment I think you could get away with £75-90 if that.

We we able to get a table for two for lunch, plus Grace the lurcher, at short notice. Excellent efficient service, well executed food, well presented without being annoying, from chefs who know how to cook. We had five small dishes between us, all delicious. A shortish menu is a good thing in our book. It means the food is freshly prepared, in- house. Why do I say this is a surprise? Sadly there are too many establishments where neither grown-up service FOH, or talent in the kitchen, is apparent in any way. The Peat Spade has both of these essential elements, in spades (sorry :) ) . I note someone in another review complains that the car park is on the full side. I'm not quite sure how this is the Peat Spade's fault, it is simply a sign of its deserved popularity. A bonus was the good value our lunch represented- five shared dishes of a decent size, one shared pud, 2 pints of Peroni and a glass of good rose, a tad over £60. We will be back.

Friends and locals have recommended this pub as a great place for food.We can confirm that the food and service were very good. They seem to cater for most types of food intolerances as well. The instagramable Sunday Lunch here looks great but tastes like an awful 1970's boil in the bag meal. It is shockingly terrible in both taste and texture. The beef was tough and salty in the extreme. My partners parents were coming up from Dorset and we wanted somewhere to take them out for a nice meal, our requirements were simple, great quality food and a table to eat at... we did get one of those things. The first thing to note is that we did visit during "Covid times", meaning the menu was reduced and probably not true to normal times. We were shown to our table ( one box ticked) and promptly ordered some drinks, the table was fine, tucked away and sticking to Covid rules. We had two waitresses one was particularly friendly & helpful, the other looked like she was doing us a favour. The choices on the menu were sufficient, something for everyone but nothing mind blowingly different, we made our choices and was informed that my partners choice of dish was being made differently because they'd had feedback that it was too heavy, and subsequently were using a different cheese in the dish....she stuck with her choice. (Picture below Cheese & Gnocchi)On the whole the meals were fine, nothing really to moan about other than my partners meal that looked a little dry, it definitely wasn't what she expected from either description, menu or waitress. The rest of our meals were ok, nothing to write home about but also nothing spectacular. This was actually the second visit for my partner and myself (the other a couple of years ago) both times the atmosphere seemed good, a comfortable noise level, warm, comfy all you need to feel relaxed and enjoy your meal.I've marked The Peat Spade as average as it did everything fairly well and don't really have anything to complain about, if it were a colour it would be beige, that sums it up for me.Andy

But the sticky toffee pudding was the best I had in a while. I could easily had seconds. The whole evening was not rushed and all three course were paced nicely. We all ordered the specials of the day and when nearly half an hour had passed and there was no sign of either food or waitress I went inside to be told that the pies took 25 minutes and the order would be ready in 10 minutes. At 2 o'clock when the food was brought we were told that the delay was because the chef had to make a fresh batch of pastry for the pie! Finished our food, no sign of waitress to take dirty plates away, go inside to ask for the dessert menu. Another 20 minutes wait, no sign of order being taken, inside again and ask for bill. On entry the restaurant was quiet as it was start of service, warm welcome and attentively given menu to chose our meal. We ordered our starter of Baked Camembert sharer with ‘artisan bread’... the bread felt like a shop bought baguette that you bake from home but onion chutney was nice and camembert was a well-sized portion. The main came out very quickly from the starter. We both ordered the steak dishes which were priced at £25. The food (Other than the steak) had very clearly been pre-cooked and reheated. The mushroom and tomato were dry, hard and boiling hot as if from microwave. Peppercorn sauce had a greasy, lumpy layer on top and the ‘seasonal veg’ was poorly drained and unseasoned cabbage. There was a wedding reception or something on, which then took priority over the other diners. After being in the restaurant for 45 minutes we’d had our starter and main... it then took a further 1 hour until we were offered dessert. The service was the main downside for us. Simple things like asking us how our meal was, offering further drinks, clearing tables after eating etc. Was absent after the mains came out. Unfortunately I felt begrudged to pay the £90 bill at the end, which I very rarely have an issue with. Disappointed as was recommended The Peat Spade by a friend

They were a bit expensive but the quality was high. My partners burger was also really good, it was made of good quality beef and melted in the mouth apparently. We were nervous about having a small child with us but they didn't mind at all and luckily she behaved herself. The head waitress (possibly owner) was really chatty and friendly which helped a lot.

It's in a very picturesque village in a lovely setting, plenty of seating in and out.The staff were very pleasant and attentive, we were shown to our table without delay and social distancing was observed. My husband had the celeriac and garlic soup, reported as delicious, I had the prawn and avocado cocktail, which I was actually quite disappointed with, there were only 4 prawns and the avocado was almost non existent, loads of shredded lettuce, and the alleged Marie Rose sauce left a lot to be desired. Mains on the other hand were excellent, sirloin steak with peppercorn sauce and Pollo Picante chicken with hot siracha butter, the chicken was as succulent as you like and very tasty, both with very moorish fries and salad. We were too full for dessert. So, apart from my starter, we enjoyed a lovely lunch and I would definitely return, worth a visit thats for sure.

I had the crab & avocado on toast, followed by perfectly cooked medium rare fillet steak with truffle fries, whilst my wife started with some of the best squid rings I've tasted & then also had steak (but a nice pink medium). Very tasty Sunday lunch - I opted for roast beef which was accompanied by a great assortment of vegetables and a huge Yorkshire pudding. Desserts were black currant mouse cake and sticky toffee pudding which both looked and tested incredible

Sunday lunch before Christmas. We both had the roast beef. Beef cooked to perfection and portions were big. Nice house red. Service quick and friendly. Been here many times, but it was the first time I noticed the fishing rods on the ceiling! Beer kept well. Good food and atmosphere. Book to avoid dissapointment.

Visited with son and daughter in law, lovely village pub. Very limited menu so much so that 3 of us where only left with fish and chips which was only so so . The starters were much better my wife and I had the sharing baked Camembert, this was overpriced though.I have had a similar dish for 1 at half the price . The service was good ,but I would not be in a hurry to go again.

This was my first visit for a while. We ordered the hake and chips and the hamburger. The fish was overly-battered but tasty enough. It was accompanied by peas, tartare sauce and chunky but slightly soggy chips. The hamburger was large, peppery and accompanied by crispy french fries and a well-dressed salad garnish. Unfortunately, like so many places, when I asked for sauces I got some pathetic little pots. Why on earth can't pubs and restaurants realise that this is no longer acceptable? Neither do I like being served expensive food by badly-dressed teenagers. These establishments should pay for a tasteful but simple uniform if they want us to pay these prices. The Greyhound on the test in Stockbridge charges similar prices and offers adult, well-dressed staff. There's a lesson in there. If they want us to spend more than 50 pounds on a meal, they'll have to improve their service. I would return as the food is good but I wouldn't go on a special occasion as they need to up their game to compete with the likes of the Greyhound on the Test or the great Clos du Marquis. I would return for a pint and a quick meal.

Tried numerous times to call but only ever got the answering machine. We left 3 or 4 messages with our contact details and when we wanted to book a table, but never did get a reply. Completely hopeless really. With so many equally good or better places locally we probably won't bother trying the Peat Spade again. It's a shame.

There was a good Aussie song entitled The Pub With No Beer and infuriatingly this almost applies at the Peat, where the friendly staff are frequently having to excuse the lack of choice on the draught beer front. On occasions they are down to one beer and the favourite among locals is under-stocked and runs out in no time. Plus there is never a guest beer. Uphams really need to sort this out.

Having been going to this pub for 10 years - it has become so up and down. I’m not sure if it’s changed ownership but yesterday was the last time we will ever visit this pub having spent a small fortune there with large groups etc over the years. Took an hour to get a starter, and eventually left an hour and 45 minutes later without having had our mains - staff sculking around all looking confused with various wrong drinks and food being given to wrong tables. People on other tables also complaining. Such a shame this pub has down the drain again - a few years ago it was one of the best. Will not be returning, ever.

Really nice pub close to the Test in a lovely part of England outside Stockbridge. Definitely worth the journey to visit. The crab on the Seafood Platter was outstanding. Sister pub of The Swan in Chiddingfold close to us, both equally good.Okay the service could be quicker but you're not there for a hurried meal - hopefully.

We visited here for a family celebratory lunch, 15 of us in total. We all had different meals, I opted for a crab salad and was a little nervous after reading previous reviews. It was outstanding tasty and fresh. The roasts looked stunning too, so much meat and roasted vegetables. All my family were ultra happy with their food. The staff were extremely busy but so helpful and friendly nothing was too much trouble. The finale was those desserts I highly recommend the raspberry mousse cake pudding to die for. Thank you PEAT SPADE for making our family gathering that little more special.

I recently had lunch here with 6 work colleagues as we had heard good reviews about the pub. It’s clearly a popular venue as we couldn’t find anywhere to park anywhere near the pub. Perhaps because it was busy this affected service as we felt that service was really slow. The menu was nice but and the food was also nice, but not particularly memorable. I had the sea bream with dauphinois potatoes which was tasty but there wasn’t a huge amount and I was still a little peckish afterwards.

Sat in the garden which is lovely. Waited 40 minutes to have our order taken and eventually went to the bar to order. Ordered two salads, chicken & avocado and a crab salad. Both salads were poor at best. Underripe avocado, shell in the crab, bland, shop bought chicken. Took ages for our plates to be cleared so we went to the bar to pay and leave as quick as possible. It’s a real shame as the setting is lovely and pub interiors really pleasant.

We arrived for lunch just after twelve and were the first customers. When we left at 1330 pm there were 26 diners tucking in so I'm being too critical. However, for our main course we both had their signature fish and chips and were both a little underwhelmed.

We had been at Thruxton motor circuit for the day at their 50th anniversary race meeting. We wanted to stop somewhere on the way home to eat and have a belated birthday celebration with our daughter. I found this pub on an online search and the menu look different and interesting, so we booked it up. It wasn't very busy when we arrived, being a little off the main road, but it is a bit of a hidden gem. We had a nice quiet table in the corner and there was plenty of room between the tables, so that you didn't feel crowded. It was table service and, once seated, a drink order was taken. The drinks were brought back promptly and our food order was taken. Our waitress did not write down our orders, but she brought them back and placed them correctly in front of each person. We had the full 3 courses and each course was well cooked, well presented and very tasty, cooked to our liking as ordered (for the steaks). They even had some interesting ales. It was a really nice meal - it's just a shame that it isn't closer to where we live, but if we are ever passing by that way again, we would certainly stop in for another meal.

We met up with friends who have visited the pub before. Excellent choice for a Sunday roast. Chicken, pork and beef were offered. Well cooked with big fluffy batter puddings and loads of vegetables. Staff very friendly and efficient and unfazed by my wife being late or a request to eat outside in the garden as it was such a lovely day. Reasonable price, drinks, starter, main at £25 a head was very good value. Will go again.
