We had a 1 night stay at the peat spade which was a nice break, the room was comfortable and cosy with a large bathroom, walk in shower and lovely toiletries. We also booked a table for evening meal, the food was great as was the service, Jack & Polly were very attentive as it was a busy Monday evening. There was a nice atmosphere about the place. The breakfast was also very nice, very relaxed. We would definitely come again.

Loved our Sunday lunch at the Peat Spade today. Service was excellent - we arrived early to have a drink before the time of our lunch booking and despite being extremely busy and absolutely full, were made to feel very welcome by the staff. We had the roast pork belly and roast beef sirloin and both commented that they were one of the best roasts we have had out. Very dog friendly. Can also recommend the truffle fries and pigs in blankets which we had as starters for the table. WIll definitley be back when we are next this way in the new year.

Very good food & well priced. Good selection of specials. Great atmosphere. Very busy for midweek. Baked Alaska was outstanding, and roast partridge excellent Speedy attentive service. The village is very fortunate to have such a thriving pub backed by the small local pub group.

I’ve been here twice over summer - once on a Sunday and once during the week. Both meals were superb. The Sunday roast was cooked to perfection and the burger I had as a main on my second visit was well-seasoned (the garlic and Parmesan mayonnaise was very tasty!). The staff were welcoming and friendly.

We wish we’d read the recent reviews before returning for Sunday Roast it has been a while since we visited the Peat Spade - visually it’s no different, but sadly they have lost their way. The staff are lacking in any idea of service - only the young man who appeared to be managing dealt with us in the correct manner. The Roast was good but spoilt by the crashing and loud clattering of cutlery being polished behind us, which went on for a good 10 minutes, why it wasn’t done behind the scenes is beyond reason. My desert was plonked down in front of me two minutes after ordering without spoon or napkin. Generally customer service is lacking. No checks were made on the ladies toilets on what must have been a busy Sunday as the bin and floor covered in used paper towels and generally required a clean and tidy. Generally looks tired after a busy Sunday service, drinks are pricy, a shandy will cost the same as a pint! A lesson learned - check reviews before returning.

Having visited the Peat Spade a few times we were looking forward to our reservation for a family Sunday lunch made 2 months in advance. Starting with the positives, as always, the food was fantastic and the service during the meal was excellent, On arrival, we were disappointed to be assigned a table in the "back room" rather than the main pub but accepted that someone had to be assigned those tables so didn't make an issue of it. However, under 2 hours into our meal, guests for a Christening party started to arrive, decorate the room we were sat in and generally usher us out from our table. At no point did anyone advise us that the room had been booked for a private party, let alone explain the situation or apologise for cutting short our lunch. In summary, great pub with lovely food but they need to be careful not to take repeat customers for granted.

What a fantastic stay we had at the Peat Spade! We stayed last Friday night in the most beautifully appointed room. The room was spotlessly clean with a fantastic shower in a beautiful bathroom, and a stunning roll top bath too. We had a four poster bed which was so comfy we slept like logs. We also stayed for dinner which was delicious, a lovely menu to choose from and we would not hesitate to recommend the food here. Add to all this staff that are welcoming and absolutely do everything to make sure your stay is fabulous. Final mention goes to the delicious cocktails!

This restaurant had been in my list to try for a while and when an offer to stay came through it was the perfect opportunity. The food was fantastic. Food and plates were piping hot with steam coming off, always a good sign for me. So good the first night, we ate here two nights and had breakfast too. It’s the smallest things that can please! I had smashed avocado on toast and it wasn’t fridge cold avocado, a pet hate when having hot toast and a hot poached egg is having very cold avocado in between making everything else cold! And ditto the plates, they were consistently hot. Staff we very welcoming and friendly going above and beyond to make things perfect, accommodating any requests, nothing was too much trouble. We ate at the Michelin plated Greyhound one lunch and the Peat Spade was in our opinion much better. Absolutely no complaints and we hope to visit again.

Occasionally go to this reliable pub with friendly staff but .... today their 'phone system wouldn't let me through to make a booking - it would have taken 30 seconds of their time perhaps. We were directed inexorably to a convoluted booking system "Confirm you have read our terms and conditions" - never did that on the 'phone, and, after battling through the booking the friendly, patronising voice describing their "lovely bedrooms" turned officious with dire warnings about being late, sitting too long at the table etc. Looking forward to our meal there, but won't book again unless I can get through to a helpful human to book.

What a pleasure to visit a pub where there are slightly unusual dishes on offer to choose from! We met our friends who also have a dog, for lunch after a walk nearby and we spoiled for choice from the delicious sounding menu. We had a selection of dishes from the 'snack' menu, which were delicious and ample enough as a starter. Two of us had the monkfish, which was super and the other two chose the rib of beef and lamb, all pronounced beautifully cooked. Two desserts appeared, very prettily presented and a cheeseboard for the other two to share. A super pub where our dogs were made very welcome and lovely food, an excellent find worth seeking out.

Hmmmm… sorry team (although all staff are very friendly!) our visit to your hotel and restaurant was a huge disappointment. Bedrooms in main building are suffering some considerable wear and tear and have a funky smell. Shower was leaky and shower door didn’t shut properly - bathroom door didn’t shut either. Then dinner… we’ve eaten here before and had some excellent food but wow… sadly you’ve really gone down hill. It’s such a shame guys. Padron peppers were soggy and over cooked. The squid was deep fried to hell and tasteless. The burger was obviously a very cheap Iceland-esq frozen patty (the bun was also stale) and your trout tacos consisted of guacamole from mass produced multi kg tubs and fairly pungent poached trout - tacos should always be fried! All in all - I’m sorry… I know COVID has been tough and your staff are lovely but it’s a shame that your online pictures do not reflect the true state of your accommodation and the food quality has completely slipped away. £125 a night is too much - at the moment I think you could get away with £75-90 if that.

We we able to get a table for two for lunch, plus Grace the lurcher, at short notice. Excellent efficient service, well executed food, well presented without being annoying, from chefs who know how to cook. We had five small dishes between us, all delicious. A shortish menu is a good thing in our book. It means the food is freshly prepared, in- house. Why do I say this is a surprise? Sadly there are too many establishments where neither grown-up service FOH, or talent in the kitchen, is apparent in any way. The Peat Spade has both of these essential elements, in spades (sorry :) ) . I note someone in another review complains that the car park is on the full side. I'm not quite sure how this is the Peat Spade's fault, it is simply a sign of its deserved popularity. A bonus was the good value our lunch represented- five shared dishes of a decent size, one shared pud, 2 pints of Peroni and a glass of good rose, a tad over £60. We will be back.

My partners parents were coming up from Dorset and we wanted somewhere to take them out for a nice meal, our requirements were simple, great quality food and a table to eat at... we did get one of those things. The first thing to note is that we did visit during "Covid times", meaning the menu was reduced and probably not true to normal times. We were shown to our table ( one box ticked) and promptly ordered some drinks, the table was fine, tucked away and sticking to Covid rules. We had two waitresses one was particularly friendly & helpful, the other looked like she was doing us a favour. The choices on the menu were sufficient, something for everyone but nothing mind blowingly different, we made our choices and was informed that my partners choice of dish was being made differently because they'd had feedback that it was too heavy, and subsequently were using a different cheese in the dish....she stuck with her choice. (Picture below Cheese & Gnocchi)On the whole the meals were fine, nothing really to moan about other than my partners meal that looked a little dry, it definitely wasn't what she expected from either description, menu or waitress. The rest of our meals were ok, nothing to write home about but also nothing spectacular. This was actually the second visit for my partner and myself (the other a couple of years ago) both times the atmosphere seemed good, a comfortable noise level, warm, comfy all you need to feel relaxed and enjoy your meal.I've marked The Peat Spade as average as it did everything fairly well and don't really have anything to complain about, if it were a colour it would be beige, that sums it up for me.Andy

We all ordered the specials of the day and when nearly half an hour had passed and there was no sign of either food or waitress I went inside to be told that the pies took 25 minutes and the order would be ready in 10 minutes. At 2 o'clock when the food was brought we were told that the delay was because the chef had to make a fresh batch of pastry for the pie! Finished our food, no sign of waitress to take dirty plates away, go inside to ask for the dessert menu. Another 20 minutes wait, no sign of order being taken, inside again and ask for bill. On entry the restaurant was quiet as it was start of service, warm welcome and attentively given menu to chose our meal. We ordered our starter of Baked Camembert sharer with ‘artisan bread’... the bread felt like a shop bought baguette that you bake from home but onion chutney was nice and camembert was a well-sized portion. The main came out very quickly from the starter. We both ordered the steak dishes which were priced at £25. The food (Other than the steak) had very clearly been pre-cooked and reheated. The mushroom and tomato were dry, hard and boiling hot as if from microwave. Peppercorn sauce had a greasy, lumpy layer on top and the ‘seasonal veg’ was poorly drained and unseasoned cabbage. There was a wedding reception or something on, which then took priority over the other diners. After being in the restaurant for 45 minutes we’d had our starter and main... it then took a further 1 hour until we were offered dessert. The service was the main downside for us. Simple things like asking us how our meal was, offering further drinks, clearing tables after eating etc. Was absent after the mains came out. Unfortunately I felt begrudged to pay the £90 bill at the end, which I very rarely have an issue with. Disappointed as was recommended The Peat Spade by a friend

Booked as part of a trip to see family, the restruant was easy to book and procedures easy to follow on arrival. Menu had a good range and we mostly opted for the Roast Dinners. They were a bit expensive but the quality was high. My partners burger was also really good, it was made of good quality beef and melted in the mouth apparently. We were nervous about having a small child with us but they didn't mind at all and luckily she behaved herself. The head waitress (possibly owner) was really chatty and friendly which helped a lot.

Chicken cooked well and not dry chips were fried and seemed home made and tasted good. Nothing green came with it. No salad or veggies and this wasn’t pointed out on ordering. Bit of a wait but they kindly offered a free drink because of this. There was a request for only one in the two cubicle toilet but they were floor to ceiling cubicles, the only problem would have been at the wash basin. The corridor to them was narrow so difficult to know if there was anyone already in there. Some wishing to pay didn’t wait to pay at their table and were standing too close at the bar.

A lovely pub with a great outdoor seating area surrounded by trees and plants. The staff were very friendly and helpful. We enjoyed the Mushroom Shawarma starter and the Plant Burger for main. Unfortunately sorbet was the only vegan dessert on offer but we were pretty full anyway! Would definitely like to return.

My husband and I visited for lunch, we were looking for a trip out somewhere different and found this place. It's in a very picturesque village in a lovely setting, plenty of seating in and out.The staff were very pleasant and attentive, we were shown to our table without delay and social distancing was observed. My husband had the celeriac and garlic soup, reported as delicious, I had the prawn and avocado cocktail, which I was actually quite disappointed with, there were only 4 prawns and the avocado was almost non existent, loads of shredded lettuce, and the alleged Marie Rose sauce left a lot to be desired. Mains on the other hand were excellent, sirloin steak with peppercorn sauce and Pollo Picante chicken with hot siracha butter, the chicken was as succulent as you like and very tasty, both with very moorish fries and salad. We were too full for dessert. So, apart from my starter, we enjoyed a lovely lunch and I would definitely return, worth a visit thats for sure.

The usual gracious Peat Spade experience despite the inconveniences of COVID (well managed by the cheery staff.). Food was good ‘though Sunday breakfast took an age to arrive. The room was far from luxurious but we weren’t there for pampering. Everything was in good order and scrupulously clean. This is a great place from which to walk and an even better destination for those returning from a countryside saunter - there is a great place to exercise dogs at Chilbolton Cow Common. After a couple of laps our pooch was happy to return to The Peat Spade and the dog-friendly attentions of guests and staff.

We went for lunch. Really very, very nice. The sharing Camembert was good. My rib eye steak was exceptional, and they serve a nice pint as well.

I used to love this pub but something is seriously amiss with the food which used to be delicious but is now mediocre. I won’t be eating here again, food takes ages to come then the soup was cold and just horrible, main course ok but not a patch on how it used to be, such a shame.

We have recently stayed here and we were absolutely delighted with the way they ard dealing with Covid. Our rooms were beautiful, clean and tranquil. The restaurant and food/wine was very good. All round a very nice place with lovely staff who couldn’t do anymore for us. Thank you

We were looking forward to one of our first meals out after lockdown only to be seriously let down at the Peat Spade. Service was poor from the off, waited ages to be served our drinks, starter cold, main course took an hour to arrive and apparently fried cheese is now described as gnocchi. Could go on. Meanwhile, not a word of apology from any of the waiting staff until the end. This is a lovely location but the complacency is staggering. It is such a shame but could be so much better. No excuses

Really enjoyed this place. Lovely food at a good price. Exceeding my expectations in every way... And our 5 (smallish!) dogs were welcomed too. Very accomodating. Only minor issue was very busy car park. Suspect would overfill very easily... parking elsewhere wasn't obvious

I went to the Peat Spade with my family on a Thursday evening to celebrate my mums birthday. The food was Delicious and there was lots of variety. Some pub classics along with dishes for a more discerning palette. The service was exceptional, we were made to feel very welcome and the waitress was attentive without been intrusive. The pub is very cosy and there is plenty of space around the restaurant, it was not cramped at all. We will be back again.

I'd been given a voucher for The Peat Spade for my 60th birthday & my son had just passed his driving test - Can't believe that I'd driven along this road so many times and not known about The Peat Spade! I can imagine it gets very busy, but we went early - 7pm. Son had fillet steak with crab & garlic prawns - steak cooked to (rare) perfection. I had haddock & chips, the batter so light and crispy - delicious! We both had sticky toffee pudding - hmmm! yum. Great coffee, great service, infact - everything faultless and we will return.

I love this place - who doesn't? It is a bit off the beaten track but you will pass it if you travel from Stockbridge to Longstock Nurseries (both lovely places). I don't know why I thought that it was actually right on the river - it isn't - but that doesn't matter. Food and service are outstanding. Staff cannot do enough for you. Trendy enough for the London lot nipping down for lunch but consistently good and traditional enough for the well heeled locals. There is a lovely space outside to sit in the summer. I took a bunch of friends from London and they loved it. Good choice of wine.

Stayed here for two nights with friends. A nice friendly pub, good selection of gin and fab food. Room very comfortable and staff very helpful, when I asked for a light bulb the manger dealt with it straight away. Room very clean and a fab shower ( no-bath). Room quiet warm and had window open but very quiet.About a 20 minute drive to Winchester and approx 30 minutes to Salisbury, village around very pretty and the place is nice and quiet, so a great base explore this area.We ate dinner and breakfast two nights in a row and food was excellent. Breakfast was also lovely great eggs royal with smoked salmon. Compliments to the chef who I understand has taken over. Chef we missed our beans and this was noted. The staff seemed very young but provided excellent and courteous service. The manager was excellent and should be proud of her great team.Would love to go back to try the Christmas menu, nice to see a pub menu changing. Loved the bar snacks too.

We dined at short notice to celebrate a wedding anniversary & thoroughly enjoyed the experience. We have visited many times over the years but tonight's dinner was easily the best we've had. It was a quiet, mid week evening, so staff were unstressed & attentive, plus there was a lovely log fire to warm us on a chilly evening so atmosphere was relaxed & cosy. The food was delicious. I had the crab & avocado on toast, followed by perfectly cooked medium rare fillet steak with truffle fries, whilst my wife started with some of the best squid rings I've tasted & then also had steak (but a nice pink medium). I drank 3 glasses of decent wine & a coffee, which brought the bill to a shade over £100, quite pricey but worth every penny in my view. Overall one of the best meals I've had locally for some time.

We pre booked for the first day of our holiday as we were staying nearby and were not disappointed. It was so good we went again. The food was varied and very good quality and while people have mentioned slow service, we were only left alone at the end of our meal which was nice, as we didn't feel rushed to leave. I would advise that you book especially at weekends and if possible, walk or get a taxi as parking can be a problem.

On a quiet weekend at lunchtime we looked forward to this interesting eatery. The menu looked good with fresh and local produce but, although not full, starters took 40 minutes to arrive and mains a further 40 minutes. Very disappointing to be let down by the slow service.

The Peat Spade has changed hands since we last visited. Now owned by Upham Breweries, who own 14 other pubs. They are all totally individual places and we have been to a few (all good)

In a very quaint rural village lies an updated pub, the bar seems to still have regulars, but further in there is ample seating for diners. There are also outside seats. The menu is seasonal and small, but this mean everything we had was excellent. The young staff are polite and helpful. Wine was lovely , but expensive, as in all restaurants. Overall we really like this place for a quite ,relaxed evening with delicious food and a friendly ambience. There are rooms for visitors to stay, as in Testvalley and near for fly fishing.

The hotel has no AC in the rooms, and actually they have no running ventilation in the sleeping area, just the bathroom. Speaking of area, the area around the hotel is tragic. On the plus side the pizza is delicious and the drafted beer is cold and cheap. Parking is free. The mood and the competence of the crew varies a lot.

Potatoes were so over cooked they were hard, the portion of beef was awful, tiny slices of very rare and hard to cut through as it was not cooked.

A cut above the usual pub grub place. Food is of a high standard and service first rate. Recommend the garlic pizette and the onion rings.
