The Pear Tree Inn in Wiltshire

To be honest I was surprised to come on here and see some quite bad reviews for this place. We visited for an early dinner with our young family. The venue was quirky, imaginative and interesting. Great for our little children as there was lots to look at- big printed posted of fruits and vegetables and a great garden to explore which loops all the way around the pub restaurant. It really is a beautiful spot to enjoy. We were served by, who we assume, must have been the manager/owner. She was great. On it and prompt. Made great recommendations. The younger two servers were a little lacking in knowledge of items on the dishes- we overheard a male server tell a customer that pieces of romanesco were tender stem broccoli and that 'he doesn't argue with the chef' and the young female server came over to do our order when it was already done. Easily done and at least they were both polite and trying their best. The menu offers local produce, interesting flavour combinations and nice portions. The highlight for us was the ice Crean sundaes- we shared 3 between us and loved the combination of flavours and textures. We loved it, would recommend it and would love to return when next in the area. Thank you.

We encountered an issue requiring alteration to our booking- both staying and eating. Peter whom we dealt with & the managerial staff could not have been kinder, more helpful for which we are so grateful. Fabulous place to stay, fabulous food , and kind, helpful, efficient staff. Can’t recommend more highly.

Visited recently on a Sunday, my first time at this venue. The dining room is quirky and very pleasant . Ideal summer venue as they have a beautiful garden so will certainly return to enjoy that. Service was superb and very attentive. We came really to visit Tyler a new Chef to support him in his new venue and as always his food was excellent - thanks for a superb lunch!

We stayed several families of varying ages for a family get together. The staff were very friendly, attentive and helpful. The food from breakfast to dinner was delicious and a good variety of choice. The rooms were very comfy, with nice touches like homemade biscuits, ground coffee and a cafetière with fresh milk provided. Lovely seating outside too.

I had fillet of sole and it was full of long bones - at least 10 and all over an inch long! My son had the same dish but he only experienced 2 small bones (to be expected with fresh fish). When I complained about my dish to the waiters they said that there was a disclaimer on the menu about fish sometimes having small bones - they were sorry but there was nothing that they could do. 1 inch bones are hardly small and if they’d got stuck in the throat could have potentially been quite dangerous. When I complained online they just told me that the sole was one of their most popular dishes! For £26 each dish I was hoping for a scrumptious and memorable meal - it was memorable but for all the wrong reasons!! I’d been here before and been very impressed with the atmosphere and standard of food but this was a very disappointing experience and one I won’t be repeating.

Unfortunately I had a bad experience with their Cornish sole fillet. It was full of long fish bones - at least 10 all over an inch long and in fact the fish itself was rather dry and disappointing. My son had the same dish which was actually very good (so it should have been for the price - £26). When I complained their attitude was poor and sadly service was poor generally (we had to ask for tap water 3 times before we got a refill) I'd been here before and had a lovely time but obviously they don't always give one a good experience. It is an expensive meal out so I would think carefully before going (if at all!)

Beware a totally hidden 10% service charge which is not usual in this area and an Inn. The food and service was OK but the old chairs were of very poor quality and uncomfortable.

Friendly staff and beautiful pub with a wonderful menu choice. The food was very tasty and well presented. Staff were very polite and attentive without being too intrusive. Stunning gardens outside too

Ww went for a Father's Day meal...which was a little disappointing. Firstly we were put on a table which had minimal light so it felt like we were sitting in the dark! Four of the party chose Roasts of varying meats...the veg served with this was some traditional veg...which you would expect but these were topped with Mediterranean tomatoes...aubergine etc...which was completely wrong! Cauliflower cheese was not fantastic either. Those who don't eat meat could not join the roast menu as there was no alternative. The vegetarian choices were not inspiring so the only other choice was fish and chips! Overcooked chips and greasy fish...not nice! We finished with coffees which were lukewarm...so not a great experience. Overlooking the food...the place is absolutely gorgeous...very pretty and beautiful gardens. The staff were super friendly and helpful so all was not lost.

A lovely country inn with efficient service and friendly staff. The menu is full and different and the food excellent. It was a perfect place to go for a birthay lunch.

We decided to have our christmas party here with around 20 people for the second year and it didnt dissapoint. food was lovely and bar staff were attentive, coming round the table asking if anyone wanted any more drinks instead of us having to wait at the bar. Will be coming back next year. food was great but thats always the case in this place !!!

Outstanding family Sunday lunch here today. Our party unanimously agreed that this was the best Sunday roast we have ever had. Generous portions, perfectly cooked veg and delicious meat cooked to perfection. 3 of us had meltingly tender and moist turkey with sage and apricot stuffing. The other two had rare roast sirloin of beef and yorkshire pudding, the meat again being succulent, tender and tasty. The puddings were also superb. Sticky toffee pudding 3 different ice cream based deserts with really well thought out accompaniments and an excellent artisan cheeseboard. My desert was pear sorbet, poached pear, honeycomb and almond crumble - all home made. I wished for a jar-jar Binks tongue to get the last drop out of the dish. Service was outstanding and there is a terrific choice of drinks of all kind including gin from the pubs own micro distillery and a wide range of well kept cask beers 10 stars out of 5 and we cannot wait till we return Thank you Pear Tree

We had an amazing time at the Pear Tree inn, loved the welcome from Niall, loved the decor and the atmosphere, loved the room, especially the showers in the garden room! The food was fantastic, and you are very dog friendly. All the staff were courteous and professional, we will definitely be returning, we also discovered on departure that a bus stops outside going directly to Bath!

absolutely ridiculous prices in relation to the quality of the food, the owner who thinks he is one of the "celebrity chefs" is simply a rude and not nice person. the atmosphere and cleanliness of the place leaves much to be desired, extremely high prices and very average food.

This is great country pub with a great interior. I had lunch with a mate and we were both disappointed with the food given that a two course lunch with a soft and alcoholic drink plus coffee was £46 a head. Both starters were poor. The crab dish was cheese on toast (a very small piece at that ) with no evidence of crab present. I had the fig and blue cheese. An unripe fig cut in half with a piece of dry average cheese some rocket and drizzled honey plus nut caramel. It was lazy and poor value for the money. The mains were better ( plaice and salmon fish cakes) but overpriced. The veg was dull and overcooked. For £46 a head I expect a lot better. Disappointed.

The food was great, service was great, and the dining area was great. Perfect scotch egg with black pudding. I had the fish for my main course and, hats off to the chef - the flavours on my plate were awesome. The waiter was attentive, helpful and polite. I asked for a specific alternative to mixed veg and it wasn't a problem. We were not rushed and we will revisit.

Arrived just before they finished serving for lunch, 30 seconds to be exact but the delightful barman was more than happy to take our order. Hats off to the poor chef who I sure thought he had finished his lunchtime shift for producing two delicious meals. Fantastic food and service will definitely be visiting again.

After a false start to a family visit due to having to walk out of The New Inn which was a disaster we realised it was a blessing in disguise because we ended up here! So happy to have walked into a welcoming friendly place full of lovely people. Great food and amazing service. We Will be visiting much more instead of existing local dives run by ego maniac's in True Religion t-shirts!

Have always enjoyed our annual trip. Was busy, but plenty of space and options to eat inside, outside under cover on the terrace or elsewhere in the large garden. We ordered drinks from the bar on arrival. As we sat in a quiet part of the garden we also placed our food order back at the bar. Everything was perfect, food arrived in 20 mins, was delicious and nicely presented. The atmosphere is great, feels like a smart venue but also relaxed, with space for kids to explore the garden.

August 2023 Starkrimson Room was lovely. Well equipped bathroom - a shower and bath which is rare these days. Mattress was a little soft for two people with bad backs. The room was a bit warm overnight despite the ability to open windows, but there was a fan which admittedly we didn't use. Limited wardrobe space but enough to cope. On one day when the inn wasn't busy during the day, I really enjoyed being able to sit in the gorgeous garden in the sunshine, watch the butterflies and read uninterrupted for most to the day. Breakfast was great. Lots of choice. Glad to see there were no restrictions on returns for extra coffee or juice. We chose to eat dinner in for ease and were very happy with the choice and quality. All lovely but an extra "big up" for the Barnsley chop and the steak - not forgetting the pear sorbet with crumble and honeycomb which I had three nights running. The service was a tiny bit slow at times, but I realise that dinner times in particular were busy for the staff and every member of staff delivered service was with a smile. Not the cheapest but I think it significantly outdid Rudloe Manor where we spent the previous two nights.

We arrived and were "sort of " shown where to sit.. it then took a lifetime to get our drinks order, then it also took far too long for the drinks to arrive, and we didn't actually order much. We then ordered our food. We weren't asked about allergies etc, which in this day and age I feel is terrible... any of us could be highly allergic, obviously we weren't or we would have pointed this out. I ordered the fish and chips... pretty poor dish for £18.50! Hugely overpriced for the quality. My son ordered the burger,as soon as he picked it up, the bun fell to pieces,which in my experience, screams stale... not good enough! The staff didn't check back to see if the food was OK and actually we all decided they weren't that friendly either,it felt that we weren't really welcome... We definitely won't be returning and I certainly will be letting others know about this experience.

Went in for dinner, there were two waitresses , one was nice , the other best described as cold , talking of cold several of the dishes were shall we say not warm . Bill was high the price of beer and wine here seems to be lumpy Ultimate question; would I go again - no.

So stayed at the Pear Tree Inn for 3 nights which included breakfast and had one evening meal on the first night, followed by a lunch gathering of 9 for Lunch the following day. We asked if the evening after having lunch, if the Chef would provide a light meal from the lunchtime menu for us in our room. As obviously, it would not look good to other guests choosing from the evening menu if ate steak sandwich or something similar in the restaurant. The chef refused our request via members of the staff. There are two types of people in this world those that do and those that don't , no prizes for the one we got. So we decided to make other arrangements to eat out the following days. Would we stay again NO, if the Chef took time to explain to us personally his reasoning or offered an alternative then we would probably have stayed again, especially as we visit the area on a regular basis. Very shortsighted and lost the opportunity for serving additional meals and future accommodation. The staff generally were excellent.

Lovely comfortable and spotlessly clean room and nice touches with the cafetière and pear drops! The gardens added the icing on the cake and were beautiful to sit and enjoy with a pre dinner drink. Excellent breakfasts (especially the homemade granola!) and dinner. The only slight criticism was the service for both Saturday evening and Sunday lunchtime was a bit slow. However all the staff were pleasant and helpful and we would not hesitate to recommend/stay here again.

Very disappointed. We went several years ago and had a superb lunch. This time sadly was the opposite. The roast beef and Yorkshire pudding was cold and they forgot to bring our starters. The staff, albeit all very pleasant, didn't appear to have been trained very well as the service was indifferent at best. And it was very overpriced for a pretty sub-standard dining experience. Won't be returning in a hurry which is sad really because the place itself is lovely.

We visit Pear Tree as much as we can’t. Really our favorite pub in the area. Location is off the main road and parking plenty. Good access for all kinds. Even EV chargers. House and surroundings so well melts it’s a hidden gem. Food is fantastic doesn’t matter what you choose! They staff is great they have super knowledge about menus so they guide you skillfully. We usually visit The Pear Tree a couple of times a year when we are down visiting the In-Laws, so we were looking forward to our visit. Always a lovely setting & good menu but sadly the service was just so poor on this occasion - it took 1.5 hours for us to receive our main course (which we had to chase for) no one came to check on us or ask if we wanted anymore drinks in that time either. Then when our main course came again no one came to check up on us - the hake was small & cold - for £24 that’s ridiculous. So we paid up & went home via Sainsburys to pick up a dessert instead of ordering one. They did knock the service charge off the bill(!!) & a little more but the money wasn’t the point, we were looking forward to a nice meal out just the two of us & instead it was just frustrating & awkward. Such as shame as we loved visiting here.

One of half a dozen lunch visits to The Pear Tree in last year or two as it’s a lovely venue and we’ve always had a very good experience. Once again our 2 courses were of high quality .. lovely tastes and balance of ingredients as we’ve had in the past. However, the hake we ordered for both myself and my wife was far too small (as in the actual fish) and particularly for a main course dish at £24 … it really was starter size at best! Such a shame because the dish was so tasty - thankfully this problem wasn’t replicated with our dessert (crumble) which was much better value despite the £7.75 price tag. So a little disappointing for the first time since we started coming to the Pear Tree … hopefully a one off rather than a worrying drive down on quantity as prices continue to rise?! We’ll be back to see and fingers crossed!

Really disappointed, very slow service and felt overlooked with noone offering drinks replenishment and the meal taking over 2 hours for 2 courses. Sunday lunch so restricted menu but this didn't help efficiency. The main meal was discounted due to being dry which was appreciated...

Recently spent a couple of days at the Pear Tree Inn - this was our second stay. Despite Covid regulations, everything was just excellent. Our room was quirky and cosy. Food was very good and the staff were simply delightful. We will hopefully return soon.

Was brilliant years ago and still is. Service perfect from first arriving, following all covid rules. Lunch delicious! Couldn’t fault anything.
