I visited for the first time just to watch the football on TV. Bought a to hug while I watched the first half and a modest half of shandy and packet of crisps for the second half. My point is that I dodn't buy much, but felt welcomed by the bar lady and the landlord even though the pub was mostly regulars spending much more. I'll return another time to try the food menu.

Splendid quintessential English pud with fantastic service and very good food at very reasonable prices. Even on Sundays you are spoilt for choice whereas many pubs only offer roasts whereas here you can have a choice of roasts or choose something from the regular menu. Food portions are great, presentation and value reall good and the food is fresh and tasty. Highly recommended after a country walk in the area.

Been here a few times, it's the most local pub near me. However, every time I enter this pub theres always something going wrong. Came here with my other half and was spoken rudely to by the old man who works with the (usually) lovely family who run the place. After being yelled at he continued to talk about me and my partner for about 30 more minutes before I was fed up and left. Did not enjoy this experience and a few others I've had at this place.

Visited with a group at lunchtime. On the face of it a slightly down at heel traditional village pub serving standard pub food. Fish n Chips, Sausage and Mash, Chilli and burgers. Bare floor boards, even a kick rail around the bar, mismatched furniture. A real pub in fact. What makes up for the decor is the service and the quality of the food both of which are a step above the norm. We enjoyed a variety of dishes, all were of a very high quality and served efficiently and happily. The variety of local beers are well kept.

No longer owned by Dark Star but their beers are still represented alongside other well kept others such as Hophead and Harveys. Reasonable choice of lagers also. Two bars, "public" for drinking locals with Sky TV and "saloon", not plush enough to be called "lounge", somewhat barn like but with a real fire one end. Most friendly efficient lady doing most of the work. Good choice of basic pub food, certainly inexpensive. Small car park, a bit tricky in the dark but other places to park nearby if full. Definitely not a gastro pub but one of the last bastions of a traditional village pub in the area.

I came here for lunch with my cousin. It's typical pub grub, done very well. I think the last time I came here was for a wake, so it was nice to come for a more cheerful occasion. We both had the scampi & chips, and both enjoyed it. The meal was very well cooked. I normally send the chips back if they have been salted by the chef, but at least these only had a pinch of sea salt. which was just about bearable for anyone like myself that does not like the taste of salt. I would definitely eat here again.

I’d identified this pub as a lunch stop due to its varied food menu and association with the esteemed Dark Star brewery. On arrival we found that it’s no longer owned by Dark Star, and hence no longer the brewery tap, but that proved to Not Be A Bad Thing as it’s now an unpretentious free house but still featuring several of Dark Star’s excellent ales as well as others from Harveys of Lewis (six quality real ales in all, iirc), as well as the usual lagers and ciders. Lunch choice was exceptional, with a really extensive menu of “traditional pub favourites” plus sandwiches, open sandwiches, various things on toast, a huge combination of toppings for focaccia melts, hot dog and burger options, a number of veggie choices. What impressed us was the ability to have many/most dishes as standalone snacks/starters, or as a full meal with chips, salad etc, while the main courses could also be had in small or standard portions. My wife had an avocado, bacon and cheddar focaccia melt with proper chips; I had a bratwurst hotdog with beef chilli, cheese and jalapeño topping. Quality and quantity was excellent and prices were extremely reasonable - eg you can have a plain burger for £5. The whole lunch, with two very filling meals, two soft drinks and two ales came to less than £20, which I think is unbeatable these days. Ale-wise, I had two great new taste new experiences via a pint of excellent Dark Star Partridge best bitter, followed by a Dark Star Eastbourne Star winter ale (5.5%) which was superb. Needless to say, my wife drove as we continued our journey. We ate in the no-frills front bar, which is a high ceilinged Victorian room (the pub was once the Station Hotel); there are several other more atmospheric eating areas in the long side bar and a room beyond that. While some parts of the pub are in need of a little maintenance and tlc, it’s very obvious that the new owners (Mick Barry and daughter Rachel) are very serious about the choice and quality of their ales and food. We were just passing through, and the pub was relatively quiet on a Tuesday late lunchtime, so I hope the local community get behind them and give the Partridge the success it deserves.

The pub offers a; dart board, snooker table and a good shipwreck for kids to play on. It also has a sweet machine which costs 1 pound! Also the staff are really friendly and they do nice meals with good drinks and also really nice snacks such as; pork scratchings, crisps, nuts and much more. Dogs are welcome. Because there is nothing bad about it I decided to give it 5 stars. Overall it's a really good place to go especially if your just having a quick stop.

We were on our way to the Sussex Prairies Garden at Henfield and, luckily, came across this pub. By the look of the rear entrance where we came in, I thought it was going to be a shabby joint, but we were pleasantly surprised inside. The staff were friendly and we had a good meal. My wife and I both enjoyed a steak, a big portion of chips, onion rings and peppercorn sauce for a total of £18, which we thought was reasonable for the food provided. I liked the Dark Star beer too. The other customers, a family group and a couple of businessmen, added a bit of atmosphere.

Ok, so we're part of a running/walking club and visit different pubs on a Monday evening through the summer. So, it's fair to say we have had some wide-ranging experiences! The Partridge did us proud ...we were about 30 in number, and offered a good selection of real-ales (Dark Star, London Pride, Sticky Wicket, Tribute etc), in good condition and well-served (the landlord has a focus on this), and more than 10 of us ate off the standard evening menu (thanks to the landlady for opening the kitchen specially!). A very pleasant couple of hours in their large function room. And of course, the countryside around Partridge Green should get a gold star mention too!

Large, sprawling pub on the edge of the village it has been modernised in the "bare boards and un-matched tables and chairs" style. From the road you might not realise it has a pleasant garden area, just the place to sit on a warm day and sample the good selection of beers(especially the local 'dark star') and try the good, straightforward and generously portioned food. Alternatively there is an indoor area with tables and a traditional bar area too. The pub hosts live music and other events as well.

Have previously enjoyed our visits to The Partridge and travelled 20 miles to visit both the pub and Dark Star brewery nearby. This was our first visit of the year and on a May bank holiday weekend but not too busy when we visited. Immediately felt this was not the same place as before - hanging baskets full of dead pants, inside the pub was dirty and loos were messy with flooding on floors. The 6 hand pumps were down to 4 with only 2 Dark Star Ales the Partridge best bitter not available. The landlord was drinking lager and didn't really seem bothered. The bar staff were friendly enough but didn't know much about a range of drinks that several visitors wanted. We were told the pub had changed hands in February. Just hope the new owners are not trying to run the place down and change it to residential use. It used to be a great Dark Star pub to visit so hope it can get back in better shape or we wont be making the long journey to come here again.

Basic and limited pub food is on offer here and I was surprised by some of the reviews giving it high scores. My score of 3 is generous. The photos on the website are not what you get served. It is not very appetising and it is not very inviting as a venue. A basic greeting would be nice as you walk in but the staff don’t look fussed at all. I visited here in the summer too and not much has changed. Even then on a hot day we were told all the table parasols were broken so there was no shade whilst eating in the heat. Yes you get a Dark Star range but is somewhere you don’t want to stay in too long.

After dropping off a vehicle in a nearby industrial estate, I had to wait a while to be picked up and so, walking into the town of Partridge Green, I found the Partridge on the corner, inviting me in with a clear and clean outside. Entering in, it is SO nice to find a traditional public house and not one that has been converted into a gastro eaterie or a Tescos! I was greeted as I entered and after a quick view of the surroundings, I ordered a lemonade (terrible I know but I was 1. on duty and 2. having to drive later on as well)! The Partridge is split into three areas, the immediate bar and pool table as you walk in, another bar area further in and then a seating area for food at the rear. There was a range of impressive proper beers under the Dark Star label - I intend to return and taste these when not on duty!! The beer garden has a paved area and then a grassed area for the children and is lovely to sit and watch the sun descend and here the night chorus commence. Within the third area, there was a proper log fire and lit - wonderful to remove the chill once the sun has vanished, with a bookcase to help while the hours away as well. A range of newspapers were available on the bar areas for all and sundry to partake if required. A group of people had ordered some food and it looked delicious, browsing the menu had a standard pub fare, again, I intend to try these another time. Soon my lift arrived and I was sorry to leave, but will return soon

We were just driving past, spotted the garden and decided to stop for lunch, so glad we did. To me, it's the little things that count. Yes the menu is smaller than some, but I'd much rather have VERY tasty food from a limited menu (there is something for veggies/carnivores) than a fast packed, deep fried, 'ping' menu. Picking up on other reviews, it's not the cheapest, but it is certainly one of the best and you don't my paying a bit more for quality ingredients - that includes the beer. What sets this place apart though is the staff, exceptionally helpful and the little touches like providing sun screen for people who use the garden - now that IS inspired! The place is about to have a refurb (shut some Mondays in July) but it was spotlessly clean, rustic, friendly and my only annoyance is that they aren't a bit closer to home - I'd definitely be a regular if they were!

The Partridge is a “brewery tap” masquerading as a village pub, The Victorian interior has been tastefully modernised to provide the home outlet (brewery tap) for the Dark Star brewery, which is situated a couple of hundred yards down the road. The pub comprises of two adjoining bars, a largish (ex-barn like) eating area and a medium sized garden.During our November visit, the beers provided (via 8 hand pumps) were from Dark Star's varied range - Partridge Bitter, Hophead, Revelation and their seasonal offering Winter Meltdown plus another which slips my mind. The beers were in wonderful condition, the staff were helpful and the ambiance friendly. The lunch menu is restricted (about 10 offerings), but the fish and meat come from named suppliers and our meals were beautifully cooked. This certainly isn’t the cheapest pub we’ve ever been to, but it couldn’t be faulted on quality. The Partridge is situated in Partridge Green, 100 yards from the Downs Link Way and 20 yards from the wonderful number 17, that runs between Horsham and Brighton, so access for those who enjoy a pint is really easy.We travelled (for our this our third visit) about 35 miles on four buses from south London, this should tell you how much we enjoyed our first couple of visits (and how we make use of our Freedom Pass).

Alright it's a limited menu which doesn't excite but 2 meals for £12 just cannot be ignored especially as the other half loves Dark Star beer.Staff courteous, toilets dated but uber clean, locals drinking, weeny car park (full!) and as said fab ham, egg and chips....oooohhhh must mention great onion rings too.

I regularly take my staff each Friday to The Partridge for a quick lunch and a few drinks. This is a great local pub with really friendly staff and a great chef who serves great pub fayre. The landlord, his wife and young family are always in or around the bar checking on the clientele. Esther the bar maid is always singing and has a friendly comment for young and old. This is not a gastropub, just a friendly traditional pub. It's owned by the local DarkStar brewery so the beer is produced a few hundred yards away and is fantastic.Enjoy The Partridge!

OK, so The Partridge doesn't have aspirations to be a gastropub. But why should it? The food here is a cut above. We had roast chicken, halloumi and mushroom burger, cheese sandwich and chips and burger and chips for main, then ice cream and summer fruit tart with vanilla cream for desserts. The food came out fairly quickly and was consistently good, with as much as possible being locally sourced. Standout dishes were the burger (delicious, moist and great flavour) and the summer fruit tart, which was blackcurrant (tart indeed!) with a lovely side of vanilla cream to take the edge off. The dining area in the restaurant is a bit cavernous and the acoustics don't help the atmosphere - it feels a bit village hall-y. But on a sunnier day, with more diners, I've no doubt the place feels more fun and upbeat. On balance though, go for the food, not for the vibe at lunchtime.

This is the brewery tap for Dark Star so always has 3/4 of their ales on draught and more in bottles. It also sells decent ciders and lagers on draught. Its a really nice pub, with a decent garden, and serves proper pub food, done really well.Vikki & Rob the managers are both really nice and friendly, as are all the staff. Its a perfect place to stop if you're walking or cycling along the Downslink path, as its just off it.We highly recommend it.

We'd been planning to come to the Partridge ever since it has been taken over by Dark Star, regretfully it was a disappointment. The Sunday lunch was fairly good, excellent whitebait starter, nice meat, though not off a joint, good potatoes but undercooked veg. The beer was excellent, the staff are charming. What lets the whole place down and puts me off going there again is the sad state of the decor. It need a good dose of tlc and a lot of cleaning: cobwebs above the curtains, dirty lower area of the bar, grubby windows. Brighten it all up and maybe more people will come - it was very quiet.

One of our favourite locals. It's a pub of two halves really. Part old man's pub/part Hoxton Square trendy. This is not the weird mishmash it sounds; it works in a something for everyone kind of way. Love the dining area, if I could sneak that fireplace home in my bag - I would! It's a Dark Star pub (the brewery is just round the corner and is definitely worth a visit) and has a fantastic selection of real ales. Not my thing at all but much appreciated by my husband. He recommends the Six Hop or Revelation. The food is generally good but it can be hit and miss. The standard menu is well done - we tend to go for lunch and have a sandwich with cheesy chips. There used to be a fab warm pork bap but sadly that's disappeared off the menu. Sunday lunch was a let down; overpriced for the size and unremarkable. However the chocolate pudding is amazing. When we've had it in the past the chef has brought it out himself - I think he must be proud of it - and rightly so! There's a midweek set menu which is great value and tasty but next time we would definitely stick to the standard menu. If all you fancy is a snack there's homemade sausage rolls and scotch eggs behind the bar which go down well with a pint. Also worth a mention is the beer garden which is surprisingly big and family friendly.

As last summer's visit was very successful to this real pub which is a few hundred yards from the small local Dark Star brewery. The three local real ales are all excellent. Nothing was too much trouble and as we arrived back in two lots of 12 in each with a 30 minutes gap all were served promptly. Walking along the adjacent Downs Link on a cold but dry day put is in the mood for something good at lunch and we were not disappointed.

Good beer, which is to be expected. The food is standard pub grub, though the ham I had was excellent, really tasty. Good service from the lovely South African barmaid. A wood burner blazing away, which would be even better if it had some comfy chairs around it, though I imagine they would be the best seats in the house. A good local pub, with great beer.

The Partridge was, once upon a time, called the Railway Hotel and was located a short distance from the long closed railway line and nearby station. It is now the 'brewery Tap' for the excellent Dark Star Brewery, located a few hundred yards down the road. The pub looks very bright from the outside but on entering this establishment it is difficult to be impressed. Seating is basic and the front bar is shared with a billiard table. The television on the wall hung at a strange angle and looking at the floor the pub could have done with a deep clean. There were however some interesting vintage photographs of the village. Just after noon there was nobody else in the pub but gradually the locals appeared and by 13.30 there were eight others in the bar. There is a room at the back, which is effectively a dining room and there were several people, mostly retired couples, having lunch.Make no mistake the beer was in excellent condition with a good range. Being near the brewery it should of course be in good condition. At £3.20 per pint for the Hophead the prices were very marginally below average for a country pub. The prices on the menu were in our view expensive, for example £11.50 for fish and chips and nearly £10 for a burger. However (and this saved the day and the points rating) they had a lunchtime special going, which advertised "two meals for £12".We opted for ham, eggs and chips and while the volume was not great is was satisfactory and the food well cooked. There were about four choices on the £12 deal menu. While the 'deal' was attractive you should not have to pay twice the price if you happen to visit on your own.Overall on the basis of the meal deal and the excellent ale the Partridge is deserving of a four out of five assessment. Five out of five is achievable if the place was cleaned/spruced-up a bit and if the main menu food prices were a couple of pounds cheaper. Yes, I would visit again if in the area, unless they cancel the meal deal.

Went for meal on sunday. The food was lovely but not what I call pub grub. We ordered a roast pork dinner. Had to search for the vegetables under the meat. This was adult size but my very thin 10 year old ate it all. I had the cajun chicken with cous cous and potato salad which I thought was an odd mixture. The cous cous was not much more than a tablespoon. Would have been so much better with a large mixed salad and a decent amount of cous cous. Must say the chicken was delicious. The other meal ordered was a cheese burger which looked gorgeous. Proper homemade burger with homemade onion rings which were lovely but a bit greasy. All in all good food but a bit pricey for what you got. These meals were £10 each. Think the burger was a bit cheaper. Desserts were good but again a bit overpriced at £5 each. I wouldn't eat there again when wanting a good pub meal.

Called in for Sunday lunch. I'd describe it as stripped back - sort of old England meets New England. Bare boards on floor and walls, reclaimed church pews for seating. It is definitely aiming itself at the local market, plus walkers, I'd say. And it really did seem like we'd walked onto the set of Crufts. Every second person had a dog with them. It seemed that the canines were the real "regulars" and were all very well behaved. We'd go again for an informal lunch if we were in the area.

Were we not living a stones throw from The Partridge we certainly would travel to enjoy it. We've been in the village for 5 years almost and in that time have seen the pub emerge from "an old mans" bar to a wonderful friendly village pub. Owned by Dark Star Brewery in the village and ran by Rob and Vicki it has really turned around. We've held post christening gatherings, first birthday party, family birthdays and "just because we can" nights here and always have been more than delighted. The staff are funny, friendly and professional. The food is good too and all locally sourced. Always a pleasure to pop in and thoroughly recommended!

Six dark star ales on tap, good pub food - no pretensions; friendly staff and a great pub setting. It enough to warrant a move to Partridge Green - all this and living at the centre of West Sussex! The ales were perfectly kept - as usual and it was hard to resist sampling all six.The Sunday lunch was well cooked and tasty and the coffee good. A menu of pub favourites to sample plus homemade sausage rolls to accompany a pint when a meal is not required. Popped in for a light Sunday lunch while walking along the nearby Downs Link While we only had a couple of salads and the kids had roasts the service was very friendly, food was tasty, restaurant area comfortable, and there was a good selection of locally brewed beers. There was a small pub garden with swings and slides for the kids. One awkward thing though was to have a tab open they wanted to keep the credit card behind the bar which isn't really standard practice these days, and there was that awkward moment when I was asked for a credit card to pay the bill and I had to explain that the staff already had it.Apart from that, would certainly return if we were passing.

Were it not for the fact that I live opposite the Partridge it would be a pub that I would travel miles to visit. The beer is always excellent, the pub being the Dark Star Brewery Tap, which carries the full range of Dark Star beers. For those who do not like the taste of proper beer there is a choice of two ciders and one or two lagers - although mass-market rubbish lagers are conspicuously and gratifyingly absent. The food is all locally sourced (with the providers’ details being shown on the menu) and is prepared on site (so you might need to wait for a while before being served). The standard of the food is excellent although it is not the cheapest place around. But if you want mass-market fast food, there are plenty of other places to try.The menu choice is limited and changes – but there is always a game and a vegetarian option, along with the usual suspects. Children’s portions are available and the kitchen is always happy to try to modify a choice should you not like a particular component. The pub is both child and dog-friendly and this does mean that, at certain times (Sunday lunchtime, for example) it gets very busy and it’s worth making a reservation. One thing to note - the post code of the Partridge - RH13 8JS - covers about half a mile of Church Road and on many maps this means that the location is shown as being about half a mile north of its actual situation. If you find that your SatNav tells you that you've arrived when you reach The Green Man (on the right) then keep driving. The Partridge is on the left at the junction of Church Road and the High Street.Highly recommended.
