The Parsons Barn in Southend-on-Sea

Normally have a good time here, however on this occasion one of the members of staff came up to 13 of us out for my mums birthday and asked to “have a word” with me and my partner (highly embarrassing). She then proceeded to say that we went into the disabled toilet together and it is utterly unacceptable and against the law. It is not against the law whatsoever I’m pretty sure her manager just made this up, but if she took a little trip to google, disabled toilets are gender neutral. Me and my partner used the same one to get rid of my babies nappies (disabled also BABY changing) and because well, we needed a toilet? We was in there all of what 3 minutes if that, but the staff seem to be on some power trip. I asked her what if I was disabled and he was helping, she had nothing to say at this point apart from blame the person who sent her upstairs to say something and to not shoot the messenger. At this point we thought let it go and not question it again, but want to leave a review as found it unbelievably rude and complete discrimination that you would think in this day and age you don’t get, god forbid you are disabled but don’t look it. Next time, do better, and have conversations with your staff on how to approach situations more kindly, if they don’t want different genders to share the disabled toilet, fine by me, but to come up to a family meal ask to “have a word” like she ready to have a punch up with us and tell us off like naughty school children, her words “utterly unacceptable and against the law, and if your family wasn’t here you would be kicked out!” is extremely questionable and a bit weird to say the least bare in mind, there were 3 children at this meal who were probably upset about how this lady approached us. Nice to know that your staff like to discriminate and are homophobic. Do better

Consistently great value. Plenty of tables and chairs. Good size eating area outside too. 2 meals with 2 drinks under £20. Ordered through the app and food arrived quickly with drinks. Give it a go.

Excellent value for the money, very amenable staff. A very clean and calm atmosphere, when we found the establishment we made it our place to go.

Decent boozer. Nice outdoor areas for summer, warm with fireplace inside for winter. Standard spoons but recently have decent rational ales on tap every couple weeks on the cheap. Always decent service and reasonable prices. Asda bus station is next door for the drunkards ride home.

Just had a very nice curry and drink...very inexpensive too. Nice venue although quite chilly in there today. Nice friendly staff.

We just come back and service was friendly and quick very efficient. Food was lovely and hot, Bern to some other wetherspoons but the food is the best here. Good 👨‍🍳.

We held a Celebration of Life get together for a local gentleman who frequented the pub as a regular. Sadly he died & we thought it fitting it should be in Parson's Barn. We cannot thank the staff enough for their care, consideration & friendliness, nothing was to much trouble & all the staff, happy, polite, smiley & helpful. We had the choice of menu to make up a table with food for everyone, large pizzas, nachos, chicken bites, chips and more, all bought out hot & tasty. Thanks Parsons Barn for making a difficult visit, painless. Will come again in happier circumstances :)

Food and drink is a typical Spoons so nothing to complain about. But the place is really filthy. Looks like it hasn't been cleaned since it opened. Skirting is thick with dust and the urinals in the gents are disgusting. They have very subdued lighting and it seems like that is deliberate to stop you from seeing how dirty its become

It's November and the weather is cold. Inside The Parsons Barn they had the air conditioning on blowing cold air. I sat with my coat on and my sister complained that her feet were cold. We couldn't wait to get out.

I know it's not the staff's fault and they were all fantastic and friendly, but what the hell has happened to the Wetherspoons burgers? One used to be plenty. Well, today I ordered the American burger and it came out looking like something a primary school would give you. It'd make a McDonalds happy meal look big. Ended up ordering a second one and still left feeling hungry. Come on Tim, what's that all about? Great service though. Nice beer.

Really attractive inside, wooden beams, wooden and paved floor. Awesome ceiling. Very clean pub. Beer was great too. Decided to stay for longer than planned and ordered another pint and meal. Never been a fan of wetherspoons food but I took a chance on the chicken jslfreizi and it was very good for the price.

My recent visit to Parsons was a complete letdown. The burger was sickly, chips were cold, and the cheese tasted awful. The bacon in the wife's panini was soggy (apparently crispy), the rice was clumped and cold, and the kids' pasta seemed like tomato soup poured over it. The only saving grace was the strawberry yoyos. Unfortunately, the overall experience left me feeling physically sick. I cannot recommend Parson Barn due to the subpar food quality.

Super fast service and the food was excellent cannot recommend this pub enough will definitely come back 5* would rate this higher if i could.

AVOID THIS BRANCH. Our order duplicated on the app and within 30 seconds my partner went up to the till to cancel one of her burgers, to be told by a member of staff that ‘they’ve already started cooking it so can’t do anything about that’ not one single apology, her attitude was disgusting. Once my partner arrived back at the table we spoke to a ‘manager’ who said they can’t do anything because of the t&c’s on the app but will speak to another manager. Once the manager Anita came over there was still not one apology or concern over our order. To my surprise I had asked if I were to complain about my meal being cold/not right ect and I want a full refund I was told she would not give me one because she knows it was to get my money back for the other meal!!! At this point I didn’t know whether to laugh or cry at how pathetic this all is. Surely a free desert or drink could have been a consolation but no, that’s clearly wishful thinking. You’d think during these difficult times we would look out for one another. I have worked in hospitality for 11 years and no way would I speak to treat a customer the way we’ve been treated. My complaint goes beyond the refund but the attitude I received from these staff was absolutely abysmal.

I just love the food. Their breakfast ate beyond my expectations...... basically all within their walls are beyond my expectations. The food were cooked quite quickly. The bar to order your food.....friendly staff and the waitrons always got smiles on their faces and alway willing to assist. This is one of my favourite restaurants

My first visit, and our first group visit. I have to say the service and food were excellent. No one person in our group had anything negative to say. At last we have found a venue for our large group that ticks all the boxes, and very reasonably priced. The staff were friendly, helpful and excellent. The whole experience was a joy. We shall be back.

Haven’t set foot in here for years. Recommended by a friend we gave it ago. Was really cosy inside sat downstairs but then moved upstairs much cosier and warmer. Wasn’t a problem that we moved the server in the blue shirt was very accommodating. Menu was good lots of choices. Food came out and I have to say I was shocked I wasn’t expecting it to be as good as it was. Really really good loads of it and totally stuffed! halloumi fries banging, Tennessee burger great and pudding yummy! Server was fab. Only moan was girl on till have a conversation with someone else whilst serving me at the till. Pet peeve! Sunday 5th around 3pm. Great food, great place. Going back!!

My first time visit here to meet up with a friend for breakfast.. Food & Drinks ordered con the App. Considering how busy it was the food came up pretty quick.. Fresh and hot. Would definitely return, due to nice food, atmosphere and cost. Very reasonable..

We usually always come here for breakfast because it’s enjoyable and very reasonable, but today me and my partner decided to take a son who is a year old. We got him the scrambled egg and toast and in the egg was big chunks of shell. I didn’t take the food back to the waiter because by the time we found it he was done, but it wasn’t the point chefs need to be aware when cooking, but apart from that food is great defo recommend.

Was looking forward to a catch with a friend and both decided on the turkey Christmas Dinner meal. This must of been the worse Christmas meal we have ever had. Black and hard pigs in blanket, rock hard peas, watery stuffing, powdery mashed potato, soggy carrots and meat that had so many clumps of gravy over it, clearly a meal that was mainly heated in a microwave. Definitely will not return.

Not been here for sometime, so Sunday breakfast it was, 13/11/22, 8.30am, peaceful not many in, service fast, food was excellent, Mocha Coffee far better than The Elms and Roebuck, and of course Decor being in a Historic barn is far better, Price increases last...

Although I was staying in Southend there was a direct and frequent bus service from outside my accommodation to the Parsons Barn. So it was more convenient to eat here here rather than the Spoons in Southend. The pub is fairly quiet and always managed...

Having escaped from a horrendous experience just around the corner we had a very pleasant evening at the Parsons Barn. Good value steaks, good service, Covid clean and orderly and a pleasant convivial Christmas atmosphere without being silly. As so often, well done Whetherspoons.

Cheap breakfast, well worth money. Enjoyable full English had exactly what I like!! Staff friendly and at busy times all help and try not to make customers wait to long to order.

We love this place great value good food friendly staff just let down by uncleard tables and in some cases can look a bit filthy such a shame may be lack of staff ,not sure but this does let it down, visited the roebuck in rayleigh and that place shines so it can be done, c,mon parsons don't let the side down you are busy enough just start to address the cleanliness problems.

We've never had a bad meal here and more recently have started to come over for the occasional breakfast BUT, don't you ever clear and clean the tables without having to be asked to do so? I can understand that during busy periods it might be difficult to keep on top of this as the turnover is very quick but why don't you employ a proper table busser for the purpose? Instead, if you make enough fuss, someone will eventually come over and squirt a bit of cleaner onto the table, then proceed to wipe it with a dirty rag pulled from their pocket. Not the most hygienic and I've started to carry bacterial wipes with me now as I can do a better job myself but this is far from satisfactory.

Visited for breakfast on Monday morning.The food is still fab. The eggs cooked perfectly. The sausages very good quality. The pancakes light & fluffy.We ordered a traditional breakfast and an American. You really get a lot for your money!Can’t wait for our next visit.

We had some friends come to visit us, so thought we would eat at this Restaurant. We arrived at 6.00 pm as we were told it can get very busy. We found the table on the mezzanine floor was quieter, so found a table for 4. The menu is fairly extensive, so we all chose different meals. Could not find starters on the menu, so just went foir a main, many meals had free drinks, so the biggest reason was the cost. Where else can you get two meals & two alcholic drinks for £17. You need to go to the bar to order your meals against a table number. The staff were polite & efficient. We ordered & paid separately, but the meals were delivered to your table quickly & all at the same time. It is not fine dining, but for the price, you cannot fault what is on offer. The building is a bit tired, but we have seen worse even in a fine dining establishment.. We had to park in Asda car park, but that was close & suitable for disabled. Toilet on the ground floor, basic but clean & tidy. Not a lot more to say really, but if you want a quick, cheap meal then this is the pp;ace to go..

Tight on the gravy! Service is fairly quick food is hot but when asked if could have more gravy was told it is portion controlled I wasn’t allowed anymore!!! However the condiments ie red sauce salad cream ect that you can help yourself to I would’ve thought they cost more money than a bit of gravy!

I have visited this pub on many occasions mainly on Friday lunchtimes.The drinks are always very good quality and reasonably priced.I have NOT eaten there to be truthful but everyone that does seem to enjoy what they have had.The staff are always friendly and helpful so I would recommend this local pub to anyone who likes good food and drinks at a good price. 8/10

A lively place to go even if its only a quick drink or a meal with friends, good value and food is as expected for a pub, look out for some of the managers special, not to mention Curry nights on Thursdays and Fish on Fridays, There is a good selection of ales, wines, and spirits, generally a good place to go and full of Characters

Been twice in a week. First for breakfast, then for dinner. Both times the food was fantastic and the beer was beautiful. Staff were friendly and the building is really lovely. Nothing to complain about at all. Would recommend highly!

Very nice building and as it's a Weather spoons pub there's a good choice of food and the prices are reasonable.

a realy nice place if you like a barn and we do .very fast service and food very good to Wetherspoons standards .only problem is its to small and you have to go early to get a table if you are not there by mid day its hard to find a table and at 1pm people were having to leave as it was full .we realy like this place and plan to make it our local every Tuesday for steak day

Came to the Parson's Barn recently for lunch with friends. Tried out a delicious new Gin Ting gin with passion fruit flavour and ordered an exciting new gourmet buttermilk chicken burger with chilli jam and brie. Unfortunately (some way or another) my order was mixed up with a BBQ grilled chicken burger. It was a little disappointing because I had to wait for mine to be remade whilst my friends tucked into their food, however, the staff were very understanding and my new dish arrived before my friends had finished their meals.

I am a regular here and always have something to eat. I also enjoy the great ales and Guinness.

Visited today for breakfast the food was stone cold and the person behind the bar response was do you want a refund errr no I want a hot breakfast the staff are all miserable the food I appreciate is cheap however the seat I was on was hotter than my breakfast I can’t believe how bad this pub is and there attitude in fixing the ongoing problems for example no pub Iv ever been in has to make there staff where cameras on them this shows the level of problems this pub has. cheap food shouldn’t mean bad service

Oh my god. What a shocker. This place is tip. See the photos i have posted. The seat was wet with spilt drinks from the night before. And my jeans were soaked through with stale beer. The staff were grumpy. The breakfast was low quality. And tasted of last nights rids and steak. When challenged, I was told that it’s a pub and not a restaurant.

Popped in for quiet drink with my partner Was served wine in a dirty glass.....when I pointed it out to manager (Anita) she simply said “they’re all like that” and proceeded to serve drink on dirty glass Not nice....not nice at all

Cute inside and yummy wetherspoons food which I think you do get good value for money. I also like that calories are on the menu which sometimes but not all the time assist in making you choose a meal perhaps a little healthier. Also great that you can order from the app and pay on your phone, especially if you have kids or don't want to queue etc :)

We had steak and would be hard pressed to get a steak as good as this anywhere ,perfectly cooked and quality meat. This is the second time visiting on Steak club and both were perfection. Staff very good.All in all a very good experience.

My girls took me there on sat for mother’s day as all was working the food came out cold , daughter had a sauce on steak asked to change it so the left her half her dinner why the reheated the steak so rest went cold , askedfor manager who was rude scruffy and argued . Kitchen staff was still hanging from night before. We was told ,

Have ate here a couple of times, and every single time the service has been painfully slow, I mean 40 minutes waiting for a drink sometimes. Staff are rude and have a ‘can’t be bothered attitude’ and the food is 8/10 cold, and not to a good standard. Has got to be the worst spoons in the area which is a shame because probably one of the most attractive

I keep coming back for more! Breakfast, lunch, dinner.. it's my go to place for pub grub at such great prices! Large English breakfast for under £5 and large gourmet burger meals with chips and onion rings under £7! Can't beat it on quality and price. Satisfaction :)

If it wasn’t for the plates and prices I would not have believed I just ate a meal in a Wetherspoons. Hands down the best meal I have ever eaten in a pub from this brand, friendly, proactive staff and genuinely nice decor put this place head and shoulders above other local ‘spoons such as the elms and the last post.

On our Sunday bucket list for Wetherspoons breakfast! Busy, staff efficient - always a good sign when the Chef drinks iced water from a plastic jug! A comment not a complaint! Only one coffee machine apparent - toilets very clean - pub nice cozy warm - take note The Elms! Hearty breakfast - bacon and hash browns cold - but replaced - big tick! The normal salad and dressing with Jacket potato was almost non existent. There was no dressing and only a few lettuce leaves on the plate. Used to be a dish of mixed salad. The portions of beans was so small. Certainly not the same as it used to be. Also the desserts menu only has mostly chocolate based dishes. No cheesecake which was always so nice! Definitely not as good.

Me and my friend went here for lunch and had a lovely meal we had a pizza with a sald and it was delicious. The staff were very friendly and even asked if our meals were OK this is the best Wetherspoons I have been to highly recommend it and so cheap. Thanks to the staff.

Very reasonable, excellent food and good service. Very happy. A little hot in the upstairs section but not a bad thing in the current weather! Some tables needed clearing but it was very busy and a little understaffed. Will be returning.

We decided to visit this Pub for breakfast,because their breakfast menu has a very good reputation. Quite true it has a very varied menu from the normal to American and things in between. Well worth a visit.And good value.

This is a stunning Wethys and with it it attracts the usual wethy 'crowd' but that don't bother us as we are wethys diehard fans, prefer the up stairs, last 2 visits here we got served up a cold fried breakfast and a cold American Breakfast and this time missing bacon from the large breakfast...why..? i note other reviews have had missing items, its not good as you have to go back to the bar and tell them, by that time the rest is cold, Shift manager please sort it out

it's a nice place for good price beer, food is of the standard which Weatherspoon as set as the norm for it's places some food comes up good but you get them moments ?????. the seating is ideal for screaming little wonders to run around for a quiet time go upstairs on average its not bad for the price would I go back well the beer prices draw me

Popped in tonight for a meal with my wife.

Occasionally visit for a vegetarian breakfast, always been very nice but today the breakfast had missing items. The eggs hard, the toast hard, the vegetarian sausages rock hard..... very disappointed but we did get a refund.

You get exactly what you pay for here, cheap beer and bargain food....food is not the best but what do you expect for less than a fiver with a beer?

Popped in here on Saturday evening to save cooking. Having seen on a previous visit that they now do pizzas, thought I would try a ham and mushroom one - big mistake. It couldn't have had less toppings on it - there wasn't even one mushroom on the whole thing let alone any ham and the mozzarella amounted to six small blobs. No additional cheese or seasoning. To say it was tasteless would be an understatement. Fortunately, one of the members of staff asked how our meals were (husband's noodles and chicken weren't much better) and I gave an honest answer. He apologised and said he would speak to the kitchen and his manager. He came back a short time later and offered us free desserts which we declined, although said we appreciated the offer. I know it's a Wetherspoons, but having eaten here before we were very disappointed and will think twice about going back to eat and if we do, I will definitely not be ordering a pizza!!

I’m a frequent visitor to the Parsons Barn & the food is always good value & generous portions & now they have Pizzas on the menu, perfect & such great restaurant d value & better than Pizza Express, we shall be back.

The Parson’s Barn has an incredibly cosy and authentic atmosphere without being too cramped or tight. The decor is very interesting with the huge fireplace and chimney and logs under the stairs and wooden beams throughout.

We went as a four probably our third visit. Ordered our food, 3 steaks and chicken burger. Waitress walking around 5minutes after our order with chicken burger, but with black pudding on it, trying to find out who ordered it. Then 10 minutes later 3 steaks and chicken burger(with no black pudding) came out. The chips were cold, was this the chicken burger with the black pudding taken off? So waitress took it away to heat chips up, so once again as a party of 4 we didn't sit and eat together, I had nearly eaten my dinner before the chicken burger and heated chips came out! Do we give you another chance? Perhaps the only way you keep going is because you are cheap?

During a recent visit to Southend, I visited this pub quite a few times. It is large and always busy especially in the morning. The building itself is very beautiful and welcoming. The bar service is quick and the drinks are cheap (at least compared to my home country!). The staff are efficient but not overly friendly. The PB does a really decent breakfast but the only thing I found strange was having to go an order and pay for your meal first at the bar, give your table number and then return. Maybe its usual in this part of the world but I thought it was a little strange.

Very busy place. Food is ok you get what you pay for. Not a quiet place lots of kid's. Great for family's.

Usually like it here and are regular customers but upon ordering on the Wetherspoons app we were surprised to see five meals get delivered to our table when we were only a party of three. Upon checking the order three of the same meal was ordered but I fail to see how I could have made the mistake myself...I am more inclined to believe it was an app fault . More to the point,the waitress was rude and it seemed as though the last thing in the world she wanted was to help us resolve the issue, even though it was a genuine mistake.

An interesting converted barn with lots of character. Although short staffed service was good. Food was good, both had lasagne, one vegetarian.

The parsons bar is a very quaint little pub near a roundabout with parking at the front and rear with a thatched roof many years ago it was a little antique shop . The pub serves all kinds of food from main meals to snacks with an extensive drinks selection. During one of the major football tournaments they installed real grass turfs all over the floors

The food here is always good as is the beer. A friend and I had steak on the steak night a few weeks ago and it was fantastic food and very cheap.

Visited yesterday with 2 friends. The seating was split and torn, we ordered a bottle of Blossom Hill rose which came in a bucket. The bottle was too warm to start with and we had to open it ourselves. One of the glasses was dirty so returned to the bar and replaced. I ordered fish and chips (adult size) which was served upside down, was so small, thin and dry with too much batter. The birthday girl ordered the pieces of chicken in breadcrumbs, thin and dry! Other meal off veggie lasagne was so, so. Desserts typical pub but the crumble must have been thrown into the Dish. we could not make a fuss as it was our friend's birthday. The staff looked as though they would rather be somewhere else! So, very disappointing and DEFINITELY won't be going back!

Last night we were late getting sorted and decided to pop into the pub for a meal. we have been before and were pleased with the quality & speed of service.

Me and my group of friends come here often, their standards have been slipping every visit we take. Today we arrived at a table and there was chutney pieces spread all over. Not only that the Pepsi I got was flat, and took 10 mins to get a new one.

After visiting regularly over the past 10 months, I was disappointed to see that all ice-cream desserts, including the fabled knickerbocker glory have been taken off the menu. The dessert menu has now been reduced to 5 measly and boringly ordinary choices. You can have a scoop of ice-cream as an accompaniment but as I said, there is not one single ice-cream based dessert on the menu now. Not happy :(

Visited again for lunch with my daughter today. I had fish and she had the brunch both of which came with chips. She had about12 chips and I had less. A couple of friends of ours arrived and also had the brunch. They both had twice as many chips as us. Someone needs to sort out the portion control. My daughter then had the chocolate fudge cake which apparently was very dry and therefore was uneaten.As stated in a previous review the Barn is very high and miss

Food a bit mediocre.Went in 12.00 Sunday.Lots of tables had not been cleared in fact 80 percent! The reason I was told lack of staff.I mentioned this and after a while the tables had started to be cleared.Tables were not very well cleaned.I regretted going in .

Seven of us decided to go to the Parsons Barn prior to a function later. We ordered at 5.15pm (We are all retired) and five of us ordered Steaks, it was Steak Night after all. To our dismay we told "No steaks", we advised that it was steak night and back came the answer "Steaks all gone." We were to say the least very surprised. A word of advice to the Manager if I may, if you advertise a night being a steak night please make sure that you have sufficient steaks to order.

Food staff and ambience wonderful. Cannot fault it. An earlier reviewer complained that dogs were not allowed in the building, if they were I would not patronise it.

the pub is lovely always enjoyed it. Sadly today I was informed that dogs are not aloud any were on the premise. very shocked I get not have g a dog inside the pub. but in a very spacious front garden?

I went here for lunch with a friend and as it is a Wetherspoons I thought i knew what the menu was, well it has a new menu, but all the favouorites are there and they are trying to keep the prices down. I do not use the app that is now available as I like to talk to the staff who are very accommodating if you want to change an item - I like their ham eggs and chhips, but like to change to a jacket potato instead. I just hope they are not increasing technology at the expense of enough staff (that is my fear). The self-service refillable coffee is great - but now that it is from an 'automatic' coffee machine there was a queue and it ran out of coffee beans. I liked the old filter coffee - it was hot, tasted good and was quick to pour - can we have this back please. Still the good thing about the Parson's Barn is also the lack of music - just the hum of conversations and people noise not musak - do not change this please.
