My husband loves this pub as it’s a fullers, I love this place for the food and lovely relaxed atmosphere. The food helps as well. We bought my Father in law for Sunday dinner up in the restaurant area, he loved it so much, we have booked for Christmas Day

A really lovely meal with 3 generations of the family getting together. Daniel’s service was fabulous, attentive and friendly and he coped with the needs of our large party with ease. Thanks Daniel.

Quiet for an evening but not bad food, if a little over-priced.

This pub is not only on a great spot with canal views with wild life and cozy fire place. The food is amazing especially the sweet potatoe fries wow..all is home made so defo recommend the pies.. dog friendly. Just a great place to go for food and atmosphere . I live near by and go there when i go for a walk. Its beautiful. The staff are so helpful and friendly too. There is a Mr muscles bar tender who is so funny and so friendly.. the staff are lovley. Going again next Sunday

Expensive but has a nice location.

It's ok, beautiful outside on the lock, food expensive and all of our meals were served cold. The mains were nice tasting but we all had different sized portions, the desserts were tiny & not worth £10 for 3 slices of banana and a squirt of cream in a tiny pastry case for a "banoffee pie" 🥧 ! No toffee ?! Staff good and helpful though. Thanks

Bar staff were attentive until asked about our reserved table ( place was 70% empty) a lackluster person showed used to a dirty table. All their costs seemed to be reduced by making the customer do the running around. But they manage to bring the food to the table (clean now after requesting a lackluster person to give it a wipe). No Sunday roast (seems when you book a table you should also book the meal?) two people arrived after us and were served the roast! We settled for fish and chips which was acceptable for €20 but most places can get F&C on a plate. I don’t normally get frustrated at foodie places but they obviously prefer to chill rather than provide a service.

Jay is an excellent bar man who is extremely friendly and popular. He is incredibly welcoming to me and my family. He takes time to remember peoples orders and is always full of energy and joy!

The Papermill pub is a fantastic pub right on the canal with loads of outside space so great in summer. Jay the barman is the friendliest barman you will ever meet and a great character! Definitely a good place for a pint and a pie!

popped in on Saturday with some friends for a quick drink but ended up staying due to barmen jay being very convincing on how good the food was and the fact a band was playing that night to. They didn't disappoint jay was brilliant 10 stars all-round jay your the man

Just came in with my wife for a dinner date, and we had a fantastic experience! Our server, Jay, was absolutely amazing. He provided excellent service from the moment we sat down, making us feel welcomed and well taken care of. Jay also had some great food recommendations that turned out to be spot on – everything we tried was delicious. The food was fresh, flavorful, and well-prepared. We'll definitely be coming back, and we hope to be served by Jay again. Highly recommended

Great place, been a regular for many years and although drinks are a bit pricey, it's still best pub in Hemel. Staff always friendly, especially Jay who is very professional and polite.

Served by Ben Hardman after arriving from Australia have to say 10/10 service especially with my young nephews. Would recommend for anyone with children.

We had the best meal out at The Papermill, our waitress Janet was so lovely, she couldn’t do enough for us, she clearly loves her job! We were impressed by the rapport she seemed to have with her other customers. It’s so refreshing to be served by someone happy and funny!! We’ll definitely be back 👌🏻🥂

Had the most amazing fish and chips ever recommended by possibly the biggest most frendliest barmen I've ever met great personality made me laugh so much well recommended for food drinks and a beautiful view of the canal

This pub has got extremely expensive. I ordered 2 drinks a wine and a single g&t and it came to £26. It would be cheaper to drink in London at these prices! I will be avoiding this pub in future.

I went to The Paper Mill for some drinks last Sunday not really knowing what to expect and I was blown away. Great choice and service was excellent. Millie was friendly and welcoming. Will definitely be coming back again soon

Had a lovely evening, my partner and I were served by Jay. Very attentive and charismatic, looked after us the entire night which was refreshing compared to the last outings we've had elsewhere. Had some excellent food and drinks and couldn't have asked for a better night. Will definitely be back and hopefully have Jay as a server a real gentleman and a credit to your business ! 5 Stars +

Came in on Tuesday night with some of the boys after a long day of work had some great beer and amazing food thanks to the recommendations from the biggest barmen I’ve ever seen lol jay was brilliant all night he had us in stitches loved the atmosphere the tables by the water to will always come back thanks jay for a brilliant night and entertainment

Popped in on the Sunday just gone with some friends for lunch was met by the barmen jay who told us about the amazing roast dinners and he didn’t fail on that the roast was amazing the drinks were really good to great choice of beer and wines thanks to jay for the recommendations on the food 5 stars allround

Love The Papermill. Water side eating, great food and atmosphere with everyone on patio is fantastic. Love being on the canal and seeing the long boats tied up. Fantastic evening and great food!!

Visited on many occasions normally just for a drink and meet family , staff are fabulous especially Janet always there with a smile and a biscuit and water for the dog as well as excellent table service .

Been going to the papermill for years lovely pub lovely staff from Louis the deputy manager who always looks after us on arrival. To JAY the best barman the Papermill has ever had he’s so good at he’s job you find people wait to be served by jay always happy and gives the pub a good vibe. The only gripe I have isn’t with the Papermill it’s fullers your proper taking liberties with the price of a pint. If not for the location & staff I probably wouldn’t pay them prices. But i suppose if it was weatherspoons prices it would be weatherspoons customers bring back carling and all is forgiven.

As 3 people of colour walked in and one of our ordered drinks was a larger shandy , when it came it had no lemonade and a friend commented that it was not a shandy . The barmaid responded by telling us not to be stupid and that we would not be served anymore . Her passive aggressive stance was shocking. We spoke to the manager Rosie who was very polite and she apologised for the situation . This was much appreciated and made the situation tolerable . Aside from this the pub is great , the food was also good but if you are a person of colour your experience might be a bit different.

The worst beer I have ever had. I’ve been there on many occasions and tried different kinds of beer - never had a feeling I am drinking a real beer. Shame.

We love this place. They always serve great tasting food. The service is really good too. We've been served by Gemma a few times and she is lovely. The menu has a lot to offer. Lunch options are really tasty but like I said in the title, the burger with the bacon jam is divine! The restaurant is in a lovely location. To burn off some of the calories, just head over the bridge, take a right and you have a lovely walk along the canal.

Really nice. Birthday celebration for 10 people and they were very accommodating. The Sunday chicken roast was really good however the burgers were a bit small for the price as was the seafood pasta.

Visited this spot for pre-dinner drinks whilst we stayed at the nearby Holiday Inn Express. It was a hot evening, so sitting out near the river was really relaxing. We intended to eat here, but the menu was lacking in veggie/vegan options. The staff were cool, but I found the drinks rather pricey.

Very expensive and the chicken was very dry.

The pricing structure, particularly for wine and beer at 23 pounds, is not conducive to repeat business.

Went up for a 2nd round of drinks and luckily spotted a parking screen on the bar.You have to put your reg number or you get a big parking fine.Why is there not some signs at the bar warning you of this. How many people must be getting caught with this con / scam if they don't see the machine on the bar ??? Also the drinks were quite expensive over double what they are at my local W Spoons.

Good music. Variety of seating choices from inside on bar stools to outside under the heaters by the canal. Staff are friendly and swift.

I want to start off by clarifying that the pub itself is really nice, feels very well designed and the staff are all very attentive and friendly. My issue stands with the cost of food mainly, as it's aimed at a premium price range. Food goes anywhere from around £10 for a starter all the way up to £30 for a main on the specials board. I'd recommend checking the menu before you visit to know what you're getting into, and avoid the shock when you sit down. The food itself was nice, but not outstanding. I enjoyed my burger, but didn't feel it quite stacked up to the £17.50 price tag as it only comes with a small serving of chips. As I mentioned, the service was good and checked the table regularly, however for that privilege they automatically add a roughly 12% service charge on top of the bill which is not mentioned or discussed, just expected to be paid. I had a burger, a pint of Asahi and a desert and my bill alone came to just under £36 which now I say it makes me cringe slightly. If you've got cash to splash then go ahead I guess 🤷 but don't think I'll be coming back...

The two us visited today. Nice location although not that easy to find. Good range of beers. If you are expecting traditional pub grub then this is one step up. We had the cheesburger and the sea bream with added onion rings. £41. So not cheap but very tasty and nice service - although I personally do not like being called darling all the time.

I have nothing at all negative to say about this gorgeous pub and restaurant. The staff are friendly and seem genuinely happy to be there. The food was very good and the atmosphere was really nice, relaxed during the afternoon and I'm the evening, despite the crowds and musicians setting up for the Friday night gig, the atmosphere continued to be relaxed and enjoyable. Huge bonus points for allowing dogs inside and having a lovely, heated outside space right by the canal. There is a lift for less able-bodied of us to access the very clean bathrooms and accessible bathroom.

During my stay at the hotel next door, I decided to try this restaurant for a meal. While the food tasted okay, the portions were disappointingly small. The biggest issue, however, was the front-of-house customer service. I ordered an item from the special board and asked the bar staff if it came with fries or potatoes, as there was no mention of sides on the blackboard. The bar staff assured me it came with fries.When the food arrived, there were no sides—just a pork chop and half a pak choi. We questioned the waiter about the missing fries, but instead of addressing the issue, he told us to speak with the bar staff and resolve it ourselves. This lack of responsibility and poor customer service significantly detracted from the dining experience. It is the first time I have left a restaurant and I still feel hungry.

I’m not normally one to write a review but felt I had to share my experience. I had booked a table and expected to be seated in the restaurant area but when we arrived we found that the restaurant was closed so we were seated in the bar area. We had not been informed at the time of booking that the restaurant wasn’t available as I probably wouldn’t have booked the table. We weren’t given any menus and were just told to order at the bar when we were ready. When we eventually found our own menus the food choices were quite limited. The food was hot when served and the chicken burger was tasty if not on the small side but my friends half chicken was found to be raw in places (see below photo) The manager came over and said that the chef had probed the chicken twice and that she assured us it was cooked and followed with ‘chicken on the bone can be pink and that’s why she doesn’t eat it!’ The only offer at this point was did she want the chicken reheated! Unsurprisingly she declined this offer. We then foolishly ordered dessert (as we were still hungry from the small burger and the inability to eat all of the undercooked chicken) The sticky toffee pudding was like cutting into a brick and the taste can only be described as ‘synthetic’ - it just wasn’t edible. The manager came over again and said she’d never been told that before about the dessert (again a useless bit of information) They did remove the desserts from the bill and gave us 20% off for the inconvenience which was good of them but it was such a disappointing evening. The pub needs to decide if it’s a restaurant or a lively bar because the two just don’t seem to mix. It used to be such a nice place to eat. For the prices they charge, it needs to offer a service that reflects the charges.
