I would just like to thank all the staff at the Crystal Palace pub for the fantastic service we got throughout the day for our daughter’s 30th birthday party. We had so many comments from all our guests about how good the food was and what a great a venue you have. Thanks again

I recently had my birthday at The Crystal Palace. I dealt with Tia who could not have been more accommodating. From me making the reservation to the actual day, Tia made it stress free and made us feel at home all afternoon. The slice of cake was the absolute cherry on top. Thank you!

The Crystal Palace was perfect for our business lunch yesterday. The main dining room is really attractive and comfortable, with tables well spaced apart. We were able to discuss plans and budgets without being overheard. The food was excellent, with a good menu well made with quality ingredients. We were impressed! Service was swift, careful and attentive without being intrusive. What really sets the bar and restaurant apart is the way it is run by Tia, a lovely lady, full of charm and enthusiasm, who made the welcoming atmosphere even more enjoyable. Thank you. We can't wait to visit again!

Booked for Sunday lunch, chicken had run out unfortunately but wasn't too much of a problem as we chose alternative dishes instead. The food was lovely.. One of the best roast beef dinners I've had in a long time. Staff were very attentive and offered a free drink to compensate for the slight wait. Will definitely go back for Sunday lunch.

So disappointing. 9 people booked. Early table as one child in the party.(6pm). No table service so went to order food at the bar. 6 of the 9 dishes we ordered were not available. Then when we asked, even more dishes on the menu were just not available. The reason? "We've been busy"!! Bar staff were just not bothered saying " It's not our fault" I can only assume nothing would be available to those who had tables booked at 7pm, 7:30 & 7:45pm! Overall felt very disappointed. It was a pre planned family birthday meal. We left and ate elsewhere. Not recommended for food.

What a fantastic place. We arrived hungry and disillusioned after having been to The Boat down the road who couldn’t manage to put together a meal for four. We couldn’t have been treated better by the staff here. The roast beef dinner was lovely and we can’t say enough about the crumble and custard. We will definitely be back this pub has a smashing atmosphere and great facilities. Thanks for retrieving a potentially bad day

I actually never write reviews but feel like I need to on this occasion. I do enjoy coming to the CP for a drink on the canal but I always find the meal service poor. This time a few examples are the fact we ordered 2 beef roasts & after we’d paid for them were told they’d run out, so we happily said we’d have pork roasts instead, but they were cheaper than the beef. So my partner went to the bar to ask the waiter to refund the difference, but the waiter sort of rambled on about how it was difficult to sort there and then, but then he never at one point tried to refund us the difference :’). My partner wasn’t going to make a fuss over a small amount of £, but kind of disappointing the waiter didn’t sort it after my partner had already mentioned getting that refund & been dismissed, especially as they were short on change when we’d paid at the bar for 2 beers, which my partner was already fine about. I later asked at the bar whether there were any desserts they didn’t have available (because lots on the menu wasn’t) to which they replied they’re all available to order. I came back not even 5 minutes later to order to be told the kitchen was now closed, which only added to me and my friends confusion as the website says food is served until 9pm on Sunday, and this was at 6pm! :’) I was also confused why the bar lady couldn’t have said the kitchen was about to close when I’d asked about the desserts not 5 mins before. We have also had that issue before, where we have tried to order food before the kitchen is suppose to close but staff just say it’s closed already, it’s giving they can’t be bothered to sort your food order vibes, whether that’s the servers or the kitchen staff I don’t know. There was also no table service for a reason that wasn’t clear. And the desserts that 2 of my friends managed to order (before kitchen closed) came with custard when they were both suppose to come with ice cream (brownie & sticky toffee), which went unexplained. And just to add to that, an hour and a half later (7:30pm), one of the staff came out and sat next to our table with a dessert for themselves 🤣 we actually found that quite funny by that point. I get sometimes dinner services are busy and staff might be short, but the staff didn’t seem busy, they had time to hang around together and dip in and out of the EURO’s game, plus only half the tables inside had customers on them, so wasn’t manic. And I also get this is a Sunday at 6pm so just after the Sunday lunch rush, but don’t show the England EURO’s game if you can’t provide the service, I cancelled a booking at The Boat for this one and I am pretty gutted I did. I’d still like to go for a drink on the canal when the suns out, but I’m done trying dinner here :’) tbh it seems the staff prefer it that way!

Poor service, poor food, expensive prices and lackluster experience. We arrived for the England game and some food (the website says food served until 9pm on Sundays) and managed to get some roasts ordered. This, however, wasn’t without its challenges. Food wasn’t available and it took the bartenders around three visits to our table to finally tell us what was. Despite friends paying for a roast which they were told was available, they then had to had the cheaper meat when it transpired the beef was not available after all. They were not refunded the difference. In fact, they were made to feel awkward for even asking. Shocking stuff. When the food did arrive, it was mediocre at best. A far cry from what it used to be. Half of our table then managed to order deserts at 17:59 and the other half were not allowed to order any at 18:02. This, despite the website saying that food was served until 9. When I questioned this with bar staff (no table service at all) I was met with a “So what? What are you going to do about it?” attitude; which was delightfully rude! My partner had the delight of having to use blue roll as there was no toilet paper in the ladies. No bar snacks available. 4 beers off of tap. What happened to the old beers on tap!? Just bog-standard rubbish you can get in any boozer now. Really poor. It’s not the first time we’ve had a poor experience with food and service here but it will be the last, as I won’t be returning for food again. Such a shame that what used to be one of Berko’s best places to go has fallen into such a miserable state of affairs.

I visited the Crystal Palace yesterday, and unfortunately, the experience was quite disappointing. Firstly our food took 50 minutes to arrive, I was charged £8 for three chicken goujons that were burnt. The same price was charged for what was supposed to be pork belly bites, but they turned out to be more like pork fat with no meat. Adding to the frustration, the chips that were supposed to come with our meal did not arrive with the rest of the food. Despite asking twice, we didn't receive them until we had already finished the rest of our meal. When I raised my concerns about the quality and price of the food, as well as the poor service, I was told to go somewhere else if I didn't like it. Additionally, we were not informed that there would be a wait on food, which only added to the inconvenience. The staff were very polite and were trying to help but then the manager got involved and couldn't of cared less. Overall, the food was overpriced and underwelming, and the service was far from satisfactory. I would not recommend.

New management, new review. We decided to come to CP on Weds night as the website promoted two courses for £20, which I was told when we got there was not running any more. This was the main reason we chose to come, so incredibly poor. Booked in advance but when arrived, no knowledge of booking - but plenty of tables so not an issue. Food took about 45m to arrive and was a mixed bag - burger and chicken escalope decent, first steak pie good but second one came out 5 minutes later and seemed to have been nuked / microwaved with a rock hard casing and incredibly hot inner. My wife went to pay for a round of drinks (all orders made at the bar, not table) and had to return to the table to get her card as cash was not accepted (in a pub!). Staff acknowledged the long wait for the 2nd pie and did offer a free drink, but overall a pretty bad experience.

It is not very often I’m willing to or want to write a marginally negative review for anywhere but I feel compelled to on this occasion. Firstly me and my friends are big fans of Crystal Palace, especially with their canal side seats and outdoor seating area. They have a good selection of beers, food, snacks that add to a very nice vibe. What really lets them down is the food service or lack thereof. It has now been 3 separate occasions when we’ve gone to have drink and a bite to eat. On each visit we’ve run out of a particular lager by 2pm. On our most recent visit (Sunday lunchtime) we were told we couldn’t order food for the next 30mins but then after that we should be fine. Only to be told when we went to order they were only serving food to tables that had been reserved. On a separate occasion (Thursday evening), we were again told food was only being served to tables that had been booked in advance. It is incredibly disappointing that somewhere with such a great place along the canal is frequently understaffed and poorly prepped to serve food.

I'm a pretty tough customer to please. What matters to me is that in hospitality, people do what they do well and with a bit of passion. To cut a long story short, we decided to hold my mother's memorial and wake at the Crystal Palace in the upstairs function room and downstairs bar/restaurant. Catering for 50+ people, both spaces were lovely, the food far exceeded our expecations in terms of quality, taste, volume and value and I can't praise Kelly and her young team highly enough for their spot-on service, and making what could have been a difficult day, joyful and brilliantly memorable. I also ate solo a couple of times in the run-up to the day and was equally impressed. All the more so in a town with plenty of competition some of which can over-promise and under-deliver.

We were going to book a table for a birthday celebration meal. We wanted to try it out as we haven't been since the refit. We called up to clarify what the seating options offered on the website actually were. The member of staff on the phone was extremely rude and condescending and then laughed at us with someone in the background for not knowing the difference between the table types offered. So I have been going to the Crystal Palace since it reopened over the pandemic. Over the last 6-7 months I’ve probably spent £600-800 on lunches in there and as always the food was amazing. However, I am not sure what has changed over the last 3-4 months but the quality of food has massively gone down hill. A few months back I ordered fish and chips and I frankly had more batter than fish. When I questioned with Kelly - the manager she promptly investigated and said there had been an error and should have received 2 pieces of fish due to smaller size. She quickly apologies and offered a free meal. Amazing customer service. I’ve been back a few times since and the burgers, salads and fish and chips have been on point. Today I had a fish finger sandwich and asked for the inside to be toasted well so it does not go soggy. I thought this would be standard practice and the likes of Gordon Ramsey always mentioned with hot sandwiches and burgers the inside toasted is a must to maintain eating experience. Anyways it came out not toasted and partly warm/soggy breads. The front of house staff apologies and said the note from till had not been printed in kitchen. Second time back still hardly toasted. It took a 3rd attempt and the lady working front of house to take ur upon herself to toast it. Great customer service on this. When I got said sandwich I finished first half and took a bite into second half .. lettuce and sauce. Took a second bite a bit of fish mainly batter, When I opened up ther was 1 small battered coujon. This is NOT GOOD VALUE FOR MONEY. I believe the fish finger sandwich and drink “pineapple juice” was £11 !!!! Would you pay circa £8-9 for the sandwich in the picture. I asked to speak to Kelly on 3 occasions and told she’s busy … so customer concerns are no longer important. If you want consistent well filled sandwiches in Berko I suggest one of the bakers or supermarkets and I will not be stepping a foot inside this place again. I’ve heard good things about The Boat - further along and as it belongs to a larger chain probably more focus on consistency and standards

They then took the mains back and we waited for our starters which were French onion soup, these were cold. Very bad experience. Rude staff. First they welcomed us by saying there are no tables available, which was not true as we had a booking. Then we weren't served, when asked, the waitress lied to my face saying the Kitchen is closed. When noticed they served to adjacent tabl3, she said they are closed at 3:30. It was 10 minutes to 3:30, so asked to order and her replied 'lucky you, saved by the nick of time'. Food took too long to be served, it was under cooked and of course no cutlary, which I had to served by myself. When I ordered from the bar, no such thing as 'Kitchen closed' was mentioned. When asked about it, the guy said the kitchen is only closing at 9pm. Apparently, he was the manger, but when mentioned the ordeal we've gone through, he apologised and said he was in his lunch break. I have never had such a bad experience like that. Lying through their teeth with no shame and treating the customers so poorly. So many good place in the area. Stay away from this one. On tip of that, much too expensive for what they offer.

We were very upset that the food, the service and the ambience at Crystal Palace were poor. Orders were taken, but all delivered together, ie starters and mains. The roast was uncooked and slapped on top of veg to hide the vegs poor quality. Thin gravy, and the waitress delivered the meals and did the call back at the same time without giving us a chance to assimilate the meal. Drinks were delivered separately by a very surly individual who could do with a customer service course..Several items were not available on the menu, making the menu limited. Asked for salt and pepper, two peppers delivered to the table. Very disappointed and would need a massive improvement for a repeat visit. Would not recommend this eatery.

We were excited to dine at the Crystal Palace yesterday but sadly it seems to have become quite poor. The menu has changed from an inspiring and varied one to almost exclusively offering burger and chips style heavy, greasy food. Nevertheless, we chose some smaller dishes to share. The green salad was minute - that is to say a teeny tiny ramekin filled with perhaps three forkfuls of lettuce and sliced sugar snap peas. The chips were from frozen and tasted stale. They proved inedible. The buttered greens were delicious but in a similar sized ramekin to the green salad. The “katsu bonbons” were truly vile and tasted of nothing but salt. The houmous with ras-al-hanout was nice but the flatbread was doused in far too much oil. The Padron peppers were similarly oily. A half-pint of cider was served as a glass of sparkling water (soda, perhaps?), a Campari and soda was served lukewarm without ice or any embellishment, tap water was not forthcoming despite our request. The bar and restaurant staff are all very pleasant but young and undertrained, seemingly without supervision. The musician playing live was excellent but no one from the pub helped her soundcheck resulting in a deafening volume. An unfortunate experience, sadly not to be recommended.

Staff were very good, food was better than I expected. Very close to Berkhampstead train station so very noisy. Sits right next to the canal so that was nice. Not a great selection of ales and ran out after 1 pint so that shortened our stay.

Recently done up with a menu revised from plain & tasty barbecue fayre to faux-posh concoctions with pretensions well above its station; this place is a bit of a mess. Service was agonisingly slow & the portion sizes small, considering the price. There is no disabled access and the toilets, although clean, are not wheelchair accessible. There are high chairs and a passable children's menu. Parking is on hardback on the public road & not part of the pub grounds. Would not recommend.

Good to see you can now buy some great lager. Shame about the little attitude man serving who looks like ALF from the 1980s tv show, think he needs to go on a customer service course, he is the only bad point i can say about this place

Booked a table for 11 people on their Thursday Steak Day and having chosen the mains in advance as requested the ribeye steaks had to be replaced by Fillet steaks, which were delicious, and we were only charged at the ribeye price. All 11 people in my party really enjoyed their meal and the accompanying glass of wine. Thanks to all the very helpful staff👍🤗

This pub has a lovely location on the canal and we were also lucky and managed to park on the road just in front. I was informed that it had recently been done up. As it was a lovely day, we sat out beside the tow path. It was very popular this Saturday lunchtime. Service inside was good, although the beer I wanted had come to the end of the barrel with the result that the barmaid offered to bring it out to me. I accepted the offer, but in the end a couple of reminders were needed and it arrived after our food. We had burgers which we demolished.

Nice pub on the canal - good menu with plenty of options. There's seating inside and outside overlooking the canal. Decent selection of cask ales and craft beers. Service and food was good - a little pricey but not out of place for Berkhamsted/current pub prices. I would visit again and nice little spot to stop by if you're walking/cycling along the Grand Union Canal.

Third time we've been here. Wanted to give it one last try to to see if it had improved over time. Sadly not. Nice looking pub & good location, let down by slow service, overcooked & overpriced food, tables full of dirty glasses & chaotic staff when it's busy. The last straw for us was being asked to leave our table, which was not booked/reserved, after spending over £60 on food and drink because someone paying £2 for a pub quiz took priority. Apparently there was no manager to speak to about the inedible rubbery meal or poor customer service. Third strike Crystal Palace! Won't return again.

We reserved a table on the phone, when we arrived we were taken to a small table which one of the seats was a stool and in a walk way so people constantly walking past. Cutlery was placed on the table after we arrived and then we were not spoken to after this. We watched as other people arrived after us and were asked if they wanted drinks and their drinks also taken to their tables. We sat for 15 mins before deciding to leave due to lack of service. Super disappointed as had been recommended to come here. Won’t be returning.

The food was outstanding and the pub held a great atmosphere. 5* customer service thank you so much! Will be visiting again soon

Been coming here for years, I know everyone cutting costs but the fish and chips was dreadful. Last time we came, sausage and mash wasn’t very nice, and was sent back, nobody spoke to us about this, even tough the dish had one mouthful out of it, the sausages didn’t have any colour and were like rubber, we paid and left. Went this evening as everyone has an off day, thought we’d give it another go, and it’s our local. This time ordered the fish and chips, always crispy, hot with lovely mushy peas, and lovely chunky tartar sauce, Today the mushy peas where from a tin I suspect, green water, and the tartar sauce was liquid , processed vinegary stuff, wasn’t nice. Plenty of food, but just soggy fish and warm at best. Gutted honestly, but won’t go back, the prices are shocking for the quality.

We had our work Christmas event here, and the food was lovely. However, I did mention on two occasions that we had a guest with a nut allergy, but unfortunately, some of the dishes still had nuts on top. There was a little mix-up on the musical bingo due to a miscommunication with the managers and it wasn't provided. Overall, it was a lovely time but these factors did let it down slightly.

Beef rib very tender and delicious on inside but like jerky on the outside so a lot was wasted. Either meal deal isn't clear or we didn't receive some items. Ordered beef plus potato side assumed that would mean full beef roast plus extra helping of potatoes and gravy but only got half a cup gravy and 3 potatoes total. Not enough gravy to do justice to the roast. Drink was also missing which was supposed to be part of the deal. all in all quite expensive for what was delivered.
