Friendly service and a good selection on the menu. The sausage and mash was delicious. Huge meaty sausages, served with fresh vegetables. My husband particularly liked the gravy. The roast beef was a huge plate of food. Tasty fresh vegetables and plenty of roasties, the meat was just pink but very tender.

We stopped off just forcdtinks and can't comment on the food. I really like how the place has been renovated, to give it both a cosy and airy atmosphere. We will return and planning a meal here in December.

Way better under new ownership/management. Food is in no way gourmet, but not bad for pub food! Great garden areas, bar area gets super busy at times which means service is slow and a bit disjointed/unorganised at times, but it’s nice to see it busy and the staff seem quite new. Decor is a vast improvement on the last version.

We were a group of three for Sunday lunch which was quite a busy time with some large family gatherings both inside and outside. Although the service was prompt and pleasant, we did seem to have to ask for everything, including salt and pepper as well as the sauces and mustard that were listed on the menu as coming with our meals. The family atmosphere was initially very pleasant but ultimately the televisions were switched on for sports with a loud viewing audience at the bar and a loudspeaker directly above our table making conversation difficult. We may try there again but at a quieter time.

The food and atmosphere was good. The bar staff are lovely and very accommodating. The lady who is the manager was awful. We were given the wrong drinks and charged a higher price, when we questioned it she went on to shout at my friend asking what she wanted us to do about it and to stop giving her attitude. She ended up silencing the pub and my friend came back to the table crying. We all work in hospitality and thought this response was disgusting.

Went for an evening meal yesterday (9th Oct 2023) - three friends out for a catch up - the sharing platters and pinot were ideal, nice quiet setting, friendly staff - we got the dipping platter and it was delicious - the chef came out and explained all the dips - he had such a passion for his craft, he made all the dips from scratch and you could tell, they were so tasty, and he also brought us out some freshly made oat crackers which were amazing and still warm, he also brought out some parma ham he had been curing for a while - it was delicious, the chips and sweet potato fries finished everything off nicely. Great catch up, cosy table and perfect picky food.

Very disappointed with all aspects of this place. My burger was tasteless, unseasoned, bland. My wife's salad was OK but you can't really go wrong with a bit of lettuce and garlic mayo. Service was OK but didn't get asked if all was OK with the meal even when we paid. And was not offer another drink during the meal.

I got a pork dish, the pork was covered in fat in and out, (I know pork is fatty but this was something else) it felt like I was swallowing warm jelly. When I complained I got told I was wrong and that’s how it’s supposed to be. I ve been a chef for 2 years and I know that’s not the case, furthermore, I also know that it’s not supposed to make you feel sick and take away your appetite. The chef was very rude to me and defensive. However the staff was lovely and felt really bad complaining but that’s how bad it was to be brutally honest .

I honestly cannot understand the positive reviews! Firstly it’s severely lacking atmosphere - we went on a Saturday night and it was empty bar a couple of tables, toys were strewn about the place from earlier in the day and there was no background music or candle light. As for the food - the menu is longer than an Argos catalogue and that should have been the first warning sign! We ordered the focaccia to share and it was in fact a pita bread with some semi raw onions in the middle of it! We sent it back and were just told ‘okay.’ At this point we really should have just left! We persevered for our mains and honestly they were so disappointing for the price - I ordered the rigatoni (which was £17!) and am convinced it was a jar of sauce with some pasta heated through in the microwave. My friends’ dishes were equally bland. My friend politely fed back to the waitress that the food was disappointing and was simply told “well other people seem to like it.” We were inclined to disagree given its near emptiness on a Saturday night the week before Christmas! In summary - a very poor pub charging high end gastro pub prices and offering none of the charm, service or food quality.

I really want to like the old mill. It could be brilliant. And it’s my local.. so I’d love to go there regularly. The food is good…if you manage to make it that far!! Every time I go the service is terrible. It begins with trying to make a reservation (they don’t answer the phone, don’t return voicemails and don’t respond to email). When we sit outside, it takes forever to get a drink at the bar even when it’s quiet. When we sit inside, we have to ask for everything (menus? Order a drink? Where is my food?). When the place is almost empty they seat everyone close together (eg we were a large party with 4 kids, an older couple out for a quiet meal probably do not want to sit on the table right next to us when there are many many other options. They asked to be moved- why was this not pre-empted to save the awkwardness?!) On my most recent visit they forgot my order so the rest of my table had nearly finished before my meal arrived- I expected my meal to be taken off the bill before it was brought to us and when I complained that it had not been, and questioned why everything has taken so long, rather than accept criticism I was challenged. I feel a lot of thought has been put into the menu but little thought has been put into front of house which really really lets the place down. After multiple poor experiences I won’t be bothering again. It was pretty handy having a place you could go for Sunday lunch without a reservation but now I know why it’s always half empty. Sort out front of house and you could have a brilliant establishment.

We had a lovely evening at Margo's last night - at their Flamenco and tapas event. The tapas were incredible, particularly the padrón peppers and bean stew (which really took me by surprise as it was SO tasty!) - you can tell that a lot of attention is paid to sourcing the best ingredients. We were given a selection of 6 tapas as part of the £30 price for the event and had fully intended to buy more to share (there were 4 of us) but they were so filling we had no room for more (gutted I forgot to take photos but I was too busy tucking in!)! The flamenco dancer and Spanish guitarist were also excellent and provided great entertainment. The whole evening took me back to Spain (minus the weather!), we really enjoyed it. I can't believe it's taken me so long to visit Margo's but I'll definitely be back again - this is the perfect spot for foodies :) Just to add this is a very family friendly and dog friendly restaurant, also the perfect spot to catch up with friends (like I did!)

We have visited this lovely place several times and we never got out disappointed. The service is always excellent and the food mouth watering. All made fresh hence why you wait a little longer but we were never disappointed. The chef takes pride with hie cooking and also with presentation. We had few celebrations here the last was my mother’s birthday. The staff helped with decorating the area and the chef personally came out to give his best wishes to my mum. Food was delicious. We were given home made fresh bread with an olive dip to start by the chef himself. We then tried the special menu, the steak and Guinness pie was to die for with some delicious home made pastry and genuinely full of big chunks of meat. Very generous portion that did not go to waste !! The homemade ravioli were absolutely amazing huge and full of ricotta and spinach. We ended our night with the delicious pudding from the specials which was kindly presented with a candle and served well presented to my mum. Thank you to Margo at the Old Mill for their hospitality and their amazing service. Compliments to the chef for his attention to detail and to Yasmin for being such a good host. I suppose we should have expected this experience in view of the fact that we are still in lockdown and having to sit outdoors in pubs and restaurants, but we were celebrating my husband's birthday and it was our first attempt at going out to lunch as a family in many months.I had reserved an outside table under an umbrella, hoping for a fine day, but in the event it was raining slightly so we asked if we could move inside the marquee. The owner said initially that he was fully booked, but later relented and allowed us to move inside, warning that we would have to finish within an hour and a half, which we accepted. Despite our familiarity with restaurant mobile apps (born of necessity during the pandemic), we all found ordering on the app a struggle and in the end had to order one of the items directly and pay separately. The wait for the food was long. Our daughter's salad arrived first, presumably as it was cold and needed little preparation. Two of the hot dishes appeared after a further 15 minutes or so, but embarrassingly our son-in-law's order only arrived when the rest of us were almost finished - he had insisted that we go ahead so that the food would not be cold. The service was very poor. Various young waitresses drifted around, looking clueless, and were no help whatsoever. By the time we had finished the main course, we had lost the will to live, and left without pudding or coffee, although this had been intended as a celebratory meal. To say we were disappointed would be putting it mildly. Worst of all, we found, like a number of other reviewers, that the owner's attitude bordered on the aggressive when we made what were very reasonable requests. We won't be back.

I visited this evening with 2 friends. There was a table behind us of 6 girls; they were having a good time and at about 6pm sang a Whitney Houston song. The owner came over and told them off for singing and for being loud - stood over them and shouted at them while not wearing a mask. The group left shortly afterwards.Later on there was a mix up with our drinks - we asked the waitress to check our order and her response was “can you go and ask him? (The owner) Otherwise he’ll shout at me if I keep coming coming over.”So my friend went over to the owner and asked him to check our order and he was shouted at and told he couldn’t check it for some reason or another so my friend let it be and came back to our table. A short while later the owner came over and asked if our problem had been sorted - he was again not wearing a mask and Was standing right over our table. My other friend asked him why he wasn’t wearing a mask (all his other staff were) and his reply was that he was exempt because he had anxiety and if we had a problem with that he would take out drinks away and we could call it a night. Again his tone was verbally aggressive - my friend pointed out that she had been shielding for 12 months so if he wasn’t going to wear a mask could he not stand over us and maintain a 2 metre distance. This only seemed to antagonise him further - his response was that he had been vaccinated and we were outside so it was ok - these are not the guidelines in place for hospitality. Just because he had anxiety and therefore is exempt from wearing a mask doesn’t stop him spreading covid, so maintain a 2 metre distance please. And if you own a pub and someone questions why you aren’t wearing a mask when you should then you simply reply that you’re exempt, you don’t verbally abuse your customers.A staff member came over later and tried to offer us a voucher, but there’s no way we would return to such a venue. The owner acted like a bouncer who’s come into enough money up buy the venue and hadn’t adjusted to the new role. We saw him later on wearing a mask pulled under his chin and not over his face, so if you’re exempt why would you need to even do that?

Everyone gives the owner/landlord a hard time but from my many visits to the pub i've found him to be nothing but accommodating. As long as you follow the rules laid out plainly that is, which doesn't take a genius.Covid 19 has ruined countless businesses and hampered many more with untold restrictions. Andy at the Old Mill is doing nothing but adhering to the rules our government has laid out for him.If you want great food, great lager and a great time, this is definitely one of the few pubs you should be seeking out in Berkhamsted. There are a lot to choose from and I wholeheartedly recommend the Old Mill.If you behave yourself, obey the covid restrictions and don't cause trouble, ignore the false reviews and enjoy yourself.Plenty of seating under cover in case of rain, heaters out when its cold, live music when its required... what more do you actually want from a pub? Most people complaining are the few who have been barred for awful behaviour and are bitter about it. I have witnessed first hand the abuse thrown at the staff and owner.4.5/5, purely for the fact no one is a 5/5.

Then had to increase it to 5 as we had another person wanting to attend which again was easy to amend online. Whilst this meant we then had to give a £25 deposit this was immediately refunded when we arrived at The Old Mill. Our table was good next to a heater and by ordering through the App, service was brisk, efficient and straightforward. Three of our group had burgers which they all said were enjoyable. Finally it’s worth saying that while the toilets are portaloos outside they are very modern and clean with plenty of hand sanitizer.Whilst there are some bad reviews on here I’d definitely recommend trying The Old Mill as for us it was an enjoyable post lockdown experience.

He said they were closing early, acting as if we should have known that before hand, because they’d had so many cancellations. Fair enough that must be annoying, but we had actually turned up for our booking, and he was treating us like we were somehow to blame.Later in the evening as we were finishing up our drinks before closing he came over and told us to not laugh so loud because there was a 6 month old baby next door to the pub. Well sorry for inconveniencing your pub with our good times!! If all the people who cancelled turned up the place would have been 10 times louder and open later. He clearly had a problem with us for some reason. Must have been frustrating with all the cancelations but don’t take it out on the customers who turned up!Won’t be going back in a hurry.

I Booked a table here for my family 2 weeks ago, was greeted by “Andy” upon arrival, he checked us in using covid 19 app and free WiFi and shown to our table.Highly recommend the rib eye steak as it was delicious, and the ice cold beer to wash it down. My kids were kept amused with the ducks on the canal and ice cream.Well done Andy the team.

Just had a lovely meal at the Old Mill. Very friendly welcome and great service. The online ordering was certainly an adventure, but quite fun once we got the hang of it. Food and drinks were served promptly, food good quality and everyone around us seemed to be having a good time. And what a joy to have somebody else do the cooking for a change.OK - all a little clunky and not sure portaloos were in the best location, but everybody here is so obviously doing their best to give people a good meal out, in very unusual circumstances - and they are doing a great job! You’ve got to dress warmly if you’re going to eat outside in April - these are strange times so go with the flow. Well done Old Mill for giving us a little bit of our old lives back!Look forward to visiting again.

Disgraceful attitude from management. This guy is unreal. May as well shut up shop and sit at home. Made to feel unwelcome and spoken to like absolute s@@t. Also spoke to my daughter and Partner with utter disrespect. Would I return. Absolutely not. I would not even bother unless you 1) like being Rudely spoken to. 2)Can hold your temper. I would of given it ZERO stars if I could of.

Visited for our first meal post lockdown restrictions lifting, to be welcomed by arrogance and rudeness. The front of house, manager, couldn’t have been less welcoming. This is just the start, after being seated at our ‘tent table, with heater’ we asked for it to switched on to be given the following excuses as to not doing so ‘we only switch them on after sunset’, ‘there is a national shortage of gas’ and ‘it costs me over £100 a day to run these heaters’. All of which are firstly, not the customers issue and secondly lies. After contemplation (and still no heater) we, regrettably, stayed for dinner. After ordering, in person with the manager as the app wasn’t working, the food arrived with the special requests being ignored, no cutlery or condiments. Every table in ears reach were complaining about the manager and the reviews on here about him are competent true. All other staff were fantastic, food and drinks delivered with a smile. Just a shame manors, customer service and the act of not talking to customers like dirt isn’t something the manager can do. Do not visit.

Booked a table for two 6 weeks ago “under the tent” for a two hour booking. Got there and no “under tent” tables available so had to sit next to the portaloo!. Service was quick but food was poor and has gone down hill. The steak was particularly bad...tough and incredibly salty. I understand that they are starting up again since lockdown but cooking a decent steak should be possible. Over the years we have been to The Old Mill many times and won’t be going back again

As a shielder who went out for the first time in over a year today, I want to thank Andy Clarke and all the staff at the Old Mill for a great experience. I was really nervous. I didn’t need to be so worried. All the tables are well spread out with plenty of room between them. Most tables were occupied, it was really busy, but I didn’t feel overcrowded at any point. Andy has hired luxury loos, with a disabled toilet which has a lift for wheelchair users. These are not your bog standard loos at all! There were a couple if technical issues with apps etc. but we’re only 4 days in and these are being sorted, and it didn’t impact our visit at all. Tables are being disinfected after each visit too. There are gas heaters for cooler evenings, but a fire pit going all day. It was cold today but we’d wrapped up well for it. Food was delicious as well. The reason I’m writing such a full review is that I now know, from my own experience as a clinically vulnerable person, what it was like and can hopefully reassure others who might be thinking of going. I can promise you I’d have left if I felt unsafe. If there’s anything I’ve forgotten to mention, please give me a shout and I’ll help if I can. Thanks for a great lunch and experience Andy. I know, and can now see just how hard you’ve worked on this. (And no, I didn’t get a free lunch to say this )

Popped into the Old Mill for a couple of pints and some chips. Was directed by a polite man to our table and told to order from the app. Installed the app and tried to use both mine and my partner’s card and the app came up with an error message meaning we could not place our order. Returned to the trailer to speak to the staff member who allowed me to order there and make payment. Then waited over another 7 minutes (about 15 mins in total further to the app debacle) before our drinks arrived, there were only 3 other tables besides us and over 4 members of staff who were working but loitering/standing around not doing a lot. We asked if the heaters could be turned on and the waitress said she would find out from her manager, she returns over 5 minutes later to let us know that her manager was otherwise engaged and speaking to someone and didn’t want to interrupt him but she would find out. Meanwhile the table of 2 ladies behind us complained about the temperature of their hot drinks because they were too cold and they requested that they be replaced. The ladies were also saying how cold they were. I saw another table asking if the heaters next to them could be turned on and the waitress said she would come back. We were served our chips and asked if we needed any sauces or cutlery and waited for another few minutes for these to be delivered when they could’ve been brought to us in the first instance or could have been placed on a table nearby where we could get these ourselves would have been better. The waitress returned again said she had asked management about the heater and was told there is not enough gas so the heater could not be turned on later until that evening. Very poor customer service ethos given the cold temperature and the fact there are heaters there. It was not a pleasant atmosphere especially considering there was only 3 other tables for the entirety of our stay so was not particularly busy. Some points I would like to suggest to management would be:- Being more customer service focussed, if there are heaters there and it cold or 5c why can’t they be turned on?- Potentially doing table service when quiet or at least improving hospitality, this is what is happening elsewhere - Having an application to order food and drinks on that is more efficient or at least works - Training up staff so they can clear drinks more readily (when we arrived 3 tables were uncleared, 2 of which were unoccupied and 3 other tables had minimal covers)I understand the pressures and difficulties that have faced the hospitality industry during the pandemic but sadly the Old Mill needs to do better, there are other pubs in Berko who are getting it right since their reopening and I just hope the old mill can follow suit. I leave this review reluctantly as I want to support all local businesses but believe this pub is falling short of providing adequate customer service. This is no criticism of the waitresses who served us as they were lovely, they just clearly need better training and direction but is clearly difficult when it is penny pinching and afraid to turn the heating on for their customers.

Came along to support local business despite it being freezing cold. Manager refused to turn on the heater as he wanted to “save the gas for later” (3 tables of people asked for the heater to be turned on, it wasn’t just us). If you’d have turned on the heater we would have stayed for several pints each and probably dinner too, AND would have came back again and recommended the place. But as it happens we felt completely undervalued as customers so left freezing cold after a pint, and won’t be back. You’re doing yourself out of business.

I was out with someone and we were walking around town with a coffee and saw the black beams over the bridge so decided to have a little sit down in the sun. We honestly had no idea that it was encroaching on the pub's private property. The manager (or someone who appeared to be the manager) was greeting two patrons and suddenly yelled over to us we couldn't sit there. We thought he was making a joke, but we got up and apologised as we started moving away. He proceeded to call us rude and really lay into us. I am honestly in a bit of shock - considering they've been shut for months, you'd think they may have been slightly more accommodating. It could have been dealt with in a very easy and polite way by first seating the patrons in front of him (as I could see they were getting embarrassed by the situation, and I really felt for them), and then coming over to us to explain that he'd prefer we not sit there with a coffee from another place. We truly hadn't realised it was private property and had apologised for the offence. I don't know, maybe he just needed a hug but sadly I won't be going back there again, which is sad as I'm a local resident and my family and I used to enjoy sitting in their garden (as patrons) in the summer months. Never again! Not a great way to open up again...

Ordered Sunday roast for my mother and seabass for her partner for Mother's Day and she said it was really lovely and very generous portions. There were even extra hand made chocolates as a treat for mum. Our last minute change of mind was accommodated and pick up from the Old Mill was really easy. Thanks for offering it and look forward to coming back in when you re-open

Just enjoyed the most terrific 3-course Valentines dinner from The Old Mill, delivered to our door, bang on time. Melt-in-the-mouth beef daube was the star, and all made gluten-free, even the bonus truffles. Fantastic value, beautifully packaged and presented, and all totally delicious. Thanks Andy and team.

Lovely food and very kindly dropped off when we couldn’t access the Deliveroo service! Gluten free fish and chips was absolutely delicious, as was the pork roast. Thank you very much for a great attitude in these very strange times.

Myself and my friend walked to the Old Mill and enjoyed a lovely lunch of chicken kebab and salad. We sat outside under the tent with the heater which was really well set up and couldn’t fault the food or service. We even got a few maltesers which was a lovely gesture. There are not many pubs set up for this current environment so The Old Mill has done really well to make you feel comfortable and safe. Well done and best of luck, keep doing what you are doing

We went for drinks during the eat out to help out period and found this pub with a lovely beer garden by a river. We were asked to check in with our registration. And to give our COVID contacts. Had some drinks. Great. But then we received a parking fine for their tiny car park. Contacted the pub. Manager started off saying it wasn’t his problem. Then went on to say I had to contact the parking company. Contacted them and they refused the appeal as they were never given our registration even though we gave it to the pub where it was written by a member of their staff in a horse box outside. The manager became unfriendly and unhelpful. Repeatedly asked for information we had already given. Very unprofessional. Very upsetting and caused a lot of stress. So if you do go to this pub. Walk. And avoid the management. Il never go here again.

We called ahead to check there was a table and were happily told "plenty of tables and turn up any time no need to book"; however been we arrived only 20 minutes later we were greeted with an extremely snooty man that rolled his eyes AT US when we said we hadn't booked, and then proceeded to explain how booking tables worked, so condescending! He kept telling us to scan the QR code to register our details, but it wouldn't work and even though he explained it didn't work for 3 other people he then proceeded to tell is it was our fault we couldn't register, once again condescending! The food was outstanding, and the only saving grace. Service was slow but with a smile. When we went to leave, but once again we were LOUDLY belittled by your front of house. As we'd moved our table 6 feet further away from all the other tables towards the canal so that we could be in the sun, we tried to explain this however were interrupted with a sarcastic remark and a swift turn of head to new customers who'd witnessed this conversation and were equally shocked.Your front of house needs to go on customer service training asap if you don't want this to happen to other customers!

I can’t rave about this place enough. The service was absolutely outstanding - so many friendly staff, who couldn’t do enough for us, but without breathing down our necks! I have to admit to falling out of love with Berko, lived here over 25 years & am fed up with the Berko Tax & try & avoid the town tbh; but The Old Mill is definitely a Gem in the town. The food was absolutely delicious, I am a foody & love meat, but I opted for the vegan sharing platter as a main & it was delicious - everythjng I love & not something I have ever seen on a menu before. Love this place & will be coming back - they have done so very much for our town this year & I am just sorry we haven’t been sooner! Thank you

Been coming here for years, I know everyone cutting costs but the fish and chips was dreadful. Last time we came, sausage and mash wasn’t very nice, and was sent back, nobody spoke to us about this, even tough the dish had one mouthful out of it, the sausages didn’t have any colour and were like rubber, we paid and left. Went this evening as everyone has an off day, thought we’d give it another go, and it’s our local. This time ordered the fish and chips, always crispy, hot with lovely mushy peas, and lovely chunky tartar sauce, Today the mushy peas where from a tin I suspect, green water, and the tartar sauce was liquid , processed vinegary stuff, wasn’t nice. Plenty of food, but just soggy fish and warm at best. Gutted honestly, but won’t go back, the prices are shocking for the quality.
