The Crabtree in Dacorum

Stopped in for a spot of lunch before my son drove home. Fabulous meal. Everything was spot on and the pub is spotlessly clean. Will be back. Highly recommend.

A pet hate is searching the internet for a place that has what you fancy on the menu only to go there and find the item is not on the menu. We took ages studying the menu and my husband went to order only to be told they are changing the menu and there are no fish items. The shepherds pie was divine.

pub ok, staff nice and helpful. i had the vegetarian burger with chips £11.29 and a small americano coffee £2.19 total £13.48 on 22/4/2024. the coffee was standard nothing special and the burger very basic though when i looked in it there were 3 bits of something which looked like small chunks of margarine but were in fact cheese so after tasting that i took them out. the food is exactly the same as at Weatherspoons the chips the same and a very basic single burger, also a member of the public had there dog with them not a guide dog so i do not recommend this pub due to the expensive food and drink and that dogs allowed in, THIS IS A OVERPRICED WEATHERSPOONS in my opinion as weatherspoons i can get all day refills for £1.56 and the basic burger and chips approx £8.99.

Went at 6.30pm on Sunday (group of 6) and most food choices were out of stock! Ordered on webite from my phone so you pay in advance! Starters were OK but avoid over fried beer battered mushrooms. Roast chicken was extremely dry (on the bone) and again deep fried roasties. No mayonaise and no mint in the mojito all run out so was bitter! Kids running about. Brought cake out with sparklers when birday guest was not at the table!Management said lack of food was due to menu change but I booked well in advance. Best part was the cake which I brought from home! Extremely disappointing, go somewhere else real shame!

Update as you asked for more detail on my 1 star rating for atmosphere. Reason for 1 star on atmosphere, I arrived last night fairly late to find a guy being kicked and hit in the head by 2 other guys. Obviously all 3 had had too much to drink. 2 women also off their heads trying to get involved. One women started on some old guy who tried to help the bouncer so I had to get involved. Single bouncer couldn't really do much to hold them off the guy on the floor. It fizzled out after 5 mins or so and we then went inside but the atmosphere wasn't great so we didn't order a drink but instead just left. Been before many times before, especially around Xmas eve and it's always had a nice atmosphere when full, but it seems like a normal Friday night, not so good unfortunately. You have hardly any young people in the pub. I ask my kids why do they not go to The Crabtree and they said because its rough and just filled with middle aged drunks, and from what I saw last night they are right. Been a few times for food and general food and service is good. Thanks

We extremely busy lots of families with children and most of the tables were full.

I had a 7 hour delay on a Stanstead arrival, I passed thru Hemel Hempstead to search for a good meal at a pub, nothing on the main drag so headed to old Hemel, asked someone who told me about this pub had had a refit, thank God I did, a lovely 3 course meal under £13.00 fantastic I will call again when collecting from Standstead again. Photos Tortilla starter, Mac cheese main, apple pie and ice cream, pud, great stuff, well worth a trip out.

The staff here are so friendly and hard working always eager to please and keep the place clean and well kept. Food always looks good. We enjoy drinks here and occasionally food. We wd recommend to others.

Just figuring out how to order on the table with a QR code and how to open a bill on the table (it's best to just ask at the bar) but then the evening went well and the food was delicious and, above all, delicious Stella!!!!

Beautiful pub with a fantastic beer garden. Drink selection is pretty good too. Food was average though. Fine big portions but after eating in a few places in the area it really didnt stand out. I would still return though, staff were very pleasant.

It was a nice pub before, but has recently undergone an interior refurbishment. Still feels like a cosy family pub but didn't try any food on this visit. We have recently been back and tried some food. It was marvellous. I will be eating here again.

The food was lovely, and the staff were really helpful.. Just took nearly an hour for mains to come out even though we had pre ordered and another 45 min for desserts.

Popped in for an impromptu visit and get some food early Saturday evening. The staff were welcoming and friendly. The food was great, steak cooked to perfection. Curry was sublime. Great customer service The staff accommodated us even though it was busy for a Friday night and my partner mistakenly booked the Saturday night instead. Food was delicious, always is when we visit. Definitely recommend and will be back again.

We were there after a funeral for a buffet lunch. Very attentive service and good food.

A very pleasant evening, we arrived earlier than planned, however we were accomodated by James. He was was very helpfull. Meal was very good too. We will be going back again.

First time visiting the Crabtree. We go to other Ember inns, this was by far the best one! Staff were very friendly and nice. All food available on the menu, arrived quickly and was really good. Atmosphere in the pub was great. We will visit again!

Good all round pub, good parking and garden

We had bottomless brunch which was really nice. I had the vegetarian breakfast and the sausages were really tasty, my husband had the full English and he really liked it. The service was prompt and friendly… we bought our dog with us and he was given a bowl of water , lots of fuss and offered treats. The Crabtree is my favourite pub in Hemel Hempstead. We’ll be back again soon!

Myself and my friend had a great evening here for our Christmas get together . Food was lovely staff very attentive and good atmosphere.

Already posted but cannot see it. Nans 87th birthday lunch. Two people ordered the carbonara which was smothered in pepper and they couldn’t finish it. My Nan ordered a starter to come with the mains and along with mg main never appeared until I went to speak to staff. They arrived after everyone had finished. When I spoke to a member of staff I got a barely audible grunt then explained we didn’t want anything but to just give feedback I was told the only person who could do anything was behind the bar, NEVER again!!! Ruined our nans birhday lunch.

Visited with friends after a recommendation and we glad we went. Warm friendly welcome and a great selection of beers and good.

Waited 50 minutes between courses despite booking and even pre-ordering from the festive menu! No service whatsoever, I had to mention the wait to the staff, they didn’t notice. They did offer a free drink but then didn’t speak to us again after that really! Quite disappointing for a Christmas meal, food was nothing special at all.

The food was cooked to perfection, the service was great. Special requests could be dealt with better on booking. As I did mention that one of our party was in a wheelchair. The table allocated was in an area that was cramped.

**UPDATED** - This place has become my husband and I's local. The staff is AMAZING and ever so kind, polite and helpful. We love sitting by the fireplace, and either catching up, having a dinner, or a drink, or even just using it as a meeting spot after work before we go home. My husband has said the mixed grill is amazing! He loves the sausages! I quite enjoy the bacon avacado salad or carbonara, or even the steaks! Can't wait to try a burger when i'm not wearing white! The drink menu is great, and I love that they offer a 2-4-1 special after 5PM. I've never been to their trivia nights, but I can't wait to! Management is amazing here and you can tell by how the staff is treated, and treats you! Love that there is a trivia game machine at the back, as the other 'fruity machines' are a bit of a bore. I am always greeted with a smile and friendly hello when I enter! Their side mac and cheese is my go to snack when I want a little something. - simply the best! Thanks Crabtree for having great price, food, drinks, staff and atmosphere! Will be back soon! :) <3 10/10 highly recommended and hard to resist when I walk by!

Disappointed as the menu states 3 sausages for the sausage and mash dish, but mine only came with 2? No reasoning as to why or given anything extra to replace? Ended up ordering another side as was still hungry. Really dislike when you don't get what you pay for.

Recently renovated, The Crabtree has great decor and a lovely feel. 7 of us had Sunday lunch and it was remarkably good value and the food was great. Service was excellent and we will be returning on a regular basis. Well done Dave and the team.

Having lived very local to this establishment for all my life (56 years) and having eaten here a few weeks ago at the weekend I was particularly shocked at the service (waited nearly an hour through the QR code) best to order at the bar tbh but upon receiving our meals I was also very dismayed at what was in front of us all. No real thought whatsoever of presentation as just looked like it had been overcooked and dried out to us all & then just plonked on a plate.... won't go into the boring details but suffice to say today's experience of the Crabtree at lunchtime on a Thursday is definitely somewhat lacking to be truthful and I've never had to wait that long before either which as I was taking my family out I did feel very embarrassed.

I had some lovely soup to start, it's a shame you've changed from butter to margarine fur the bread, cottage pie was delicious

Beautiful pub with a cozy warm atmosphere

So disappointing. Firstly, the menu offered a set price for 2 or 3 courses. This is not clear and there are hidden unpublished extras. Is mis selling and not right. Wrongly written. The beef rib was fatty and yucky. Only eat half of it. All frozen veg (not fresh) which were unappetising& unappealing. Roasties had better from Aunt Bessie’s. Yorkshire was ok. Gravy was good! One waitress covering whole place. She worked so hard and was uncomfortable & unfair to work people like this. She had no chance of clearing tables. Dirty plates left on table and not taken away - unpleasant. Sauces and accompaniments arrived half way through meal. Didn’t have pudding & left. Was really poor - would not recommend& I certainly won’t return.

Well, 13 years on from my first visit and after many more in between, my most recent didn't disappoint. Service was great, staff were very friendly, beers were cold and crisp and the food was delicious. Very comfortable and cosy pub, especially for us with 2 kids and 2 strollers. Fireplaces going make the scene even more attractive. A must visit when in Hemel.

1st visit to this pub and was made very welcome. Excellent pint of landlord Very positive vibe about the establishment. Although I did not have food it looked good and great value for money

Come here every Monday for food and it’s absolutely superb. We never get a bad meal. Cheap as well especially considering current prices. Barman is very friendly and hard working. The whole atmosphere is so much better since the refurb and new manager

Booked for a birthday dinner for my brother. Staff friendly and helpful. My only moan was a security guard hovering and telling us we needed to leave as we had children with us. As it was very busy we were still waiting for puddings. Had a word with a member of staff who went and had a word Didn't stop him hovering and looking at us. We felt pressurised.

The food is average whilst the beer is very poor. If you're a lager or guiness drinker, you probably wouldn't notice. The bitter is very hit & miss. Sometimes, it's ok at best, most of the time, there are are no hand pulled bitters.

Was helped with the app to get our 40% discount on mains . Beth fish and chips I ever ate . Wife’s chicken and mushroom pie was tasty and piping hot . Staff so attentive without being invasive . Table set up on time and wanted for nothing . Table cleared and wiped as soon as we finished. . So impressed that I gave a 25% tip . I’ve never given over -10% before.

Absolutely awful food again. Decided to give them another try after a bad experience before. But all the food was the same as previously. 6 friends and we all felt the same. Everything completely over cooked , steak grizzly, chicken cremated and chips overcooked. What’s happened to the food. Also the ordering, we were told no pies, no, fish of any description. This pub has totally gone downhill and the chef needs to be replaced or you will have no customers left.

It was ok, just about acceptable for the price point. Steak, burger and chicken on each plate over done and to much "chargrill" probably wouldn't go back a little disappointed.

Always loved this place before the refurb but now it feels even more special as soon as you walk in. Often come here for a quick drink but we decided to go for a meal yesterday. Quick and friendly service at the bar, and an app to use if you prefer that. Food is always 10/10 here even when it’s busy.

I think the Crabtree has been upgraded since I was last there, decor is very nice. Welcoming, friendly staff, young man who served me was very helpful re allergies. I was very limited to what I could eat due to being vegan too, but got there in the end! Recommend and will return.

I have already sent a message with regard to our visit, unfortunately I can't repeat my disappointment with the service and food at this venue.

Very much an it is what it is kind of place. That said, the food was very tasty and the staff were very friendly. Only reason I marked it down for the atmosphere was all the little kids running around causing mayhem and adults kicking footballs around (this was outsideobviously) whilst people are eating. Not the pubs fault at all but enough to put me off going back.

Randomly popped in for a quick snack before going home to do some more DIY. The staff were very friendly and welcoming, the menu was so great we decided to go all out, and we have to say the steak was amazing, melt in the mouth super tasty, even said it was better than miller and carter! Sadly no DIY was done as we both fell into a food coma once home. (Shame) We will 100% be going back here on a regular basis, and are seriously considering booking for Boxing Day too. Can't wait to try more from their menu.

Had Sunday lunch with the family. The service was impeccable and the whole place had a very pleasant atmosphere. We ordered a mixed grill, Hunter Chicken and two turkey roasts. The food arrived quickly and was cooked to perfection. It was the best mixed grill I've had at a restaurant in a long time. We will definitely be eating there again. Full marks to the chef and all the staff working there.

Out for family on 19/9/23 had a lovely meal made better by the service given by Sarah K, she was very polite and helpful, could not do enough for us, will come back more often now as we asked Sarah what days she worked as I know we will get great service from her, she was an absolute delight

Recently refurbished, very fresh and comfortable. Bonus, can now order via a QR code on the table. Food came quickly and tasted great

New look to the place is great, a lot more inviting. Food was fantastic, we all had steak, much better than it used to be. Great value too. A good selection of drinks on draught available as well. We all really enjoyed our evening.

Long waiting time to order even wasn't that busy..

Having come up here on previous occasions the food was really good , lord of choices and the baked mushrooms were the reason we came back. We were disappointed to see these had been removed but ordered the beer bettered mushrooms which were ok but could have been offers with a garlic dip rather than the sour cream. My friend orders the sirloin which was off the menu ( even though it was 1230) and the rump came out so tough she could not eat it . The onion rings were not crispy and were dripping with oil. For mine as a vegetarian there was not a lot of choice and ended up having a salad with chips . I understand that you have to cater for both vegans and vegetarians but I would have liked the option to have proper cheese or at least a separate menu Love the place and the garden and the staff are friendly but will not come back for a meal

A great place to relax . They have the best pub garden in the town by far . I take my family up there all the time for a quiet one and a meal . But also a great atmosphere to OUT OUT

Lovely pub, friendly staff, but the food really let the pub down. The roast dinner has really gone downhill since last year. Beef was tough and difficult to cut, roast potatoes were from a frozen packet not fresh, vegetables undercooked and hard, and gravy was thick and gloopy. Steak ordered on one dish was tough, grisily and could not cut with a steak knife, had to be returned. It’s a real shame as the pub is lovely. Will not be returning for Sunday roasts until hear better feedback from others

I don’t know what’s happened to the Sunday Roasts but not very good. I’ve been going to the Crabtree off and on for years. Went through a stage food was bad about 4 years ago, then last year food was great and roasts were lovely....

Very very long wait for food which when arrived was overcooked and very hard , inedible , no apology offered , just oh as a response, very disappointing

Waited at bar for ten minutes. Wasn't busy at all but was completely ignored by multiple members off staff. They just kept walking past and blanking.....even a slight acknowledgement would have been something! .....all ales were off too. Never got a far as ordering though, as we left as complete ignored!! Off to find another pub!

Don't go here! Food disgusting. Fish and chips awful, tasteless and overcooked so hardly any fish to be seen!! When we co.plained the 'Manager' was apathetic at best! Don't waste your money!

Lovely food, quick service, tables quite close so at busy times a little noisey

Absolutely shocking. We booked a table for over 15 people, so was aware we would be coming. Food came out wrong & late. I ordered my little one a children's meal she received her starter then her main over 30mins later. Such a shame as the restaurant is nice and had potential. The organisation is very poor. It was my brother's birthday and it was a total shambles. You would of thought at the very least you would of been offered a complimentary drink for the bag service or even free deserts. But nothing. The plates were left to build up the whole time we was there. A few of us had to clear our own tables to make room. As I say, it's a great shame as it has potential to be so much better.

We had a table of 11 to have dinner, there was afew of us who didn't get our dinner due to how long it was taking. Most of the table had not only had there dinner but they also had there pudding before ours had reached the table! For the food to come out at all different times was not acceptable, when you all order at the same time you expect to eat at the same time but not in this case! Afew of us left unhappy an hungry! 😡

Having been for 2 funerals came back for a happier occasion. Family get together, eldest announced she's expecting. A very warm welcome by your wonderful bar staff. Helpful, kept us informed and when we did have a miscommunication it was resolved speedily. In my opinion they were superb and you should be doing all you can to retain staff like them as its hard to find better. When I'm back (home) (I live in Lincoln) we shall return Improvement would be Making sure there's Eton mess available.

Lovely refurb of the pub and service was good but food not good. I had sirloin steak which was extremely grizzly had to leave most of it as inedible. Husband had double stack burgers which were burnt and tasted like they had been reheated again...

Met friends for a meal and drinks. My friend had to choose her meal three times as you’d run out of everything she ordered. Sadly my meal was a little disappointing as the asparagus wasn’t trimmed which let down the meal a little. It’s nice to see the new decoration throughout and that the ladies toilets have better doors on each of the toilets.

Normally a good experience in here . But since they reopened on 7th not good . First time it toke 45 mins for some small chicken wings to arrive apparently they went to the wrong table . On second occasion food arrived long before my drink food was practically gone by time drink did arrive no apology for delayed drink just can you not order from the app ( if you cant manage orders from app because of numbers switch it off or inform customers they should order at the bar

I visited here for dinner in April before the referb. The food was not great, the tomato soup did not taste good, it felt like it was out of a tin. But the prices were reasonable. I visited after the referb with my dog but was told dogs are not allowed inside, but only outside. Luckily it was a nice day. But can't be a local pub you can pop into particularly if the weather is bad and you have your dog. I would love to try the pub more but it would not make sense to do so if you can't bring dogs in.

First time I visited Food excellent Ordered food around 4 A lady came and put a reserved plaque on our table for 45 minutes later I asked if I was able to order desert was told yes but you will have to move tables which I was not happy about Happy to take our rmoney for our meals but felt very rushed
