I attended a wake on 27th March. When we arrived the doors were closed and we had to sit in our cars because it was cold and raining. When we entered the pub it was freezing and the food was not ready. We had to wait for the coffee machine to warm up. After about an hour the food was brought out. Sadly some of the party had to leave by then. The food consisted of pies containing little or no meat and were cut in half. The tiniest of sausage rolls, a few chips, two small jugs of gravy which they served you. Bowl of pasta and coleslaw. A tray of sandwiches. Small quiche cut into quarters. Mini pork pies cut in half. 3 tray bakes. I was informed this was charged at £14 per head. Despite asking for the heating on, it stayed colder inside than outside. No tea or coffee provided with the meal. I have attended several wakes and never been so disappointed with the facility. Wish I had taken photos of the buffet.

Nice and cosy, friendly pub, pool table, the Sunday dinner is a must! But you should reserve first. Nice beer garden and lawn. Right next to the church. Occasionally they have live music on too!

We went on Sunday for a family lunch, 4 generations and a dog. We had a very friendly reception and a large table. Starters of garlic mushrooms, king prawns and prawn cocktail. Mains of Lamb roast, steak pie, Lamb shank, chicken and gammon roast and for our 3 year old mash, 3 sausage and beans. All served with mash, roast and a choice of veg. Everything we had was hot, well cooked and enjoyed. Pudding was syrup sponge, peach and pear crumble, Ice-cream for the little one and a cream confection, I forget it's name. The service was good, nice atmosphere and friendly locals, It was all value for money and I am told the beer was excellent. It is in a beautiful Old world setting next to a church. We shall be back. (Our little dog sat under the table, was brought a bowl of water and two doggy biscuits)

Visited with family. Lovely beamed building. The 2 course meal for £15.75 excellent value for money. I had the steak pie..meat very tender with gorgeous gravy creamy mash, carrots, swede, cabbage and cauliflower. In other words, hot, good, copious wholesome and traditional food. I am a huge fan of high quality, unpretentious cooking. For dessert, my niece had syrup sponge with custard. I had cheesecake drizzled with strawberry 🍓 sauce. The service is prompt and the team is friendly and professional. The only teensy critique is that the tables are a bit small for four persons, making it awkward to place the side dishes as well as plates and glasses. This is, however, a small note. The inn, located just next to Newchurch Church, is picturesque. A lovely Summer evening, delightful surroundings and company, great food. Doesn't get much better than that.

Best kept secret in Culcheth village for Sunday lunch. All freshly prepared and delicious. Food not served on other days of the week but that doesn't stop the Pack Horse from being a very warm and welcoming pub with a proper village pub atmosphere. The licensees are always front of house and extremely friendly. There are always free pies and cheeses on the bar early in the evening on a Friday when there is a good early drinking crowd. The last time we were there with friends the landlord came round the bar to join his customers, something he does regularly. He put music on which everybody including himself sang along to. Great evening, lovely warm lively atmosphere. Really enjoyed it.

A delicious and varied Sunday lunch menu is there waiting for you to enjoy at this delightful old world pub After a scrumptious starter of whitebait and a large serving of brisket fit for a king I still couldn’t resist the creamy lemon tart for dessert . A pity they only serve food on a Sunday but they do other special evenings throughout the week.

We’ve lived in the village for two and a half years and have been looking for a good local Sunday lunch for ages and not found one . . . until now. We popped in one day during our dog walk and they had just finished serving the lunch. There were a few roast potatoes left going at the bar so we tried them. They were lovely so we thought we’d try the full works. The whole meal was gorgeous. So much flavour and the lamb for me was delicious. A few months ago we went to George’s restaurant in Worsley where we paid twice as much and the food was disappointing, this was much better and on our doorstep! Can’t wait to return! Neil.

Great local pub. Contrary to other review we found this a very friendly and welcoming pub to us non-locals. Beer is very well kept and has a nice selection on offer. Does a roast on Sundays but other than that food is limited to what the landlord/lady is giving away that night - sandwiches, cheese etc. Quite a large beer garden round the back. Parking looks like it could be an issue, although we had no trouble on our mid week visit.

If you fancy a really good laugh go to the pack horse on a Monday night, Chris Platt runs a great poker night. Chris drinks endless amount of lagavulin whisky yet somehow manages to run quite a tight ship. Invariably, he almost always wins. Real ale flows and the odd Jagermeister train appears usually courtesy of Tony "Poker" Unsworth. You will no doubt be told how to play "proper" poker by Mickey and If you can get out alive on your first visit you've done well. If your still married after a couple of years attending the Pack Horse Poker Night then you're either hung like a Grand National Winner or your wife is playing somewhere on Monday night also !

I have frequented the Horseshoe, Croft, on a number of occasions. On entering you may be forgiven for thinking that you have fallen through a time warp and gone back in time. Textured walls, high picture rails with plates balanced precariously, sixties style chandeliers (no bulbs) and that smell of a real pub which can only be achieved after years of beer being spilled on the Axminister carpet. If you enter from the front you are met by a low ceiling with olde world beams. To the left there is a paneled room and ahead a small bar. I always enter from the rear, as is my want, and I am, usually, greeted by four or five regulars, sitting at the bar like a Grumble Weeds Reunion. All give a welcoming grunt before carrying on complaining about things like life, body parts which are causing them pain or the price of cumquats in Aldi. The food is tasty and wholesome and there is a good choice on the menu. However, if you are a regular ‘Eater’ I don’t suppose it would take you long to tick all of the dishes off. They tell me that the squirrel in aspic is a ‘Must Have’. As far as the staff are concerned, I cannot speak highly enough of them. All very enthusiastic and helpful and willing to give a candid opinion on your choice of food. Likewise, the bar staff are extremely amiable, and I would like to give a particular shout out to Hannah whose smile lights up the room and who runs a very tight ship. There is a good selection of beers and other refreshing, fizzy, beverages and a cask ale. All in all a great little place, good food, good beer, great staff and a welcoming atmosphere. Unless, of course, you bump in to Peruvian Pete, the three fingered Poker Dealer from Wigan.

The freshly made tuna mayo and chicken with stuffing sandwiches on granary bread were delicious today and nicely presented on the dishes. The service was fast too and there was a nice choice of cakes for those indulging (Cadbury choc brownie in particular!) The new-ish restaurant extension is also good and well aerated.

We had a fantastic stay at The Partridge as a birthday treat for my partner after travelling down from the Scottish Highlands. Neal, the General Manager was an absolute gem and was very kind to accommodate some special requests for our arrival. The room was very generously sized and we slept so well in the HUGE bed. The under floor heating in the bathroom added a little bit of luxury to our walk in shower and I was very happy to be able to sit in front of a mirror and do my hair in the morning which I don’t always find possible when staying in other hotels! Breakfast was absolutely delicious and the quality of the food was fantastic. The young ladies working in the restaurant in the morning were so friendly and polite and checked on us through our meal. We will definitely be returning again to The Partridge for a longer stay, one night wasn’t enough! Thank you to Neal and your lovely team!

My Girlfriend & I stopped here after a 10 mile cycle ride along the Sankey Valley Trail. The staff were warm welcoming and very friendly. They didn't serve meals just offered a selection of pies/pasties. We went for the cheese and onion pasties. Which were very tasty and and a very nice pint and a half pint with blackcurrant of Guinness. Which was excellent too. Highly recommend this place and a beautiful location to stop and sit outside and admire the view over the river or the boats moored up on the canal
