We wanted to try somewhere to eat in The Covered Market and had heard good things about Fasta Pasta which is served here so we gave it a go as it looked quite busy. It's looks like an old fashioned greasy spoon but they can sometimes be great. We ordered some food which included a large Fasta Pasta and some hot drinks and were served by a really friendly (Australian or South African) waiter. We sat down and our food came in good time but was missing an item we’d ask for. After a while, we politely asked an older gentleman who was near and serving food. He was visibly irritated at us/the situation but came back with the missing item and that was that. Bit awkward but not a huge issue. So, we ate our food and had no further issues but naturally noticed what was going on around us where the same man was incredibly rude to three more sets of customers. We watched one poor American woman look quite shocked/upset at being barked ‘no’ at for coming in to ask a simple question. I don't know if the man here is having a really bad day/time as he did seem incredibly stressed/grumpy. However, put yourself in others shoes and it really isn't the right thing to do to take it out on customers/strangers who might also be having a bad day/time or alternatively having a good day or are on holiday/vacation and don't want it ruined. The food was ok but the pasta wasn't great at all (90% plain pasta, 10% sauce) so the food just isn't worth putting up with the service I'm afraid to say. Let's just say, at the end of our visit, we simply wanted more milk for our tea and genuinely didn't want to ask.

We were enticed into this cafe due to its imaginative name, looking for some nice food and drink. We arrived at 15.40 and we informed that they would be serving food for another 20 minutes and that they close at 5. We said that's fine, went and took a seat and proceeded to order. Ordering paninis seemed to be an issue despite them being on the menu and ended up with pre made heated baguettes which are apparently the same thing. After ordering a vegetarian baguette he picked out one from behind the 'ham and cheese sign' and when we told him he'd picked up the wrong one he said 'it doesn't matter'. He did then change it to the right one looking very annoyed that we had pointed out his mistake rather than apologising. My vegan friends ordered two vegan paninis and both had some cheese on top which had to be picked off, they were not incredibly concerned but had they had allergies this would have been an issue. We were repeatedly told that they closed at 5, which was over an hour away so said that was fine. At 15.55 we were told that we had five minutes left until we had to leave 'because they close at 5'. Clearly the bald man did not know the time. At 16.00 we had paper bags from a tool hire shop thrust onto our tables and told to leave and we could take the 'take away bags' with us. At 16.02 he said 'I'm not being rude, but can you leave'. He had been very rude the entire time and clearly could not tell the time, had he not wanted to serve us he should have said to start with. The food was reasonably nice.

The day we visited Oxford, we had great difficulty finding a cafe where the 4 of us could sit & have lunch. There were thousands of visitors in Oxford & the streets/footpaths were crowded. Then we came across this little market alley & the Oxford Cafe - it was packed, like all the other cafes but there was a small empty table squeezed into a corner, so we quickly commandeered it. We had quite a long wait, due to the crowds, but it was worth it as we had a delicious baguette lunch & hot tea/coffee. We marvelled at how the small team managed to bring all the food orders to each table without spilling anything and still keep smiling. Both service & food were excellent & good value for money. From our experience, can recommend this as an excellent Oxford Cafe.

Went here for lunch yesterday, the girl who served us was very nice but the service was very slow as was our order, which was only a panini and there was a few staff members on. Waited nearly 30mins for our panini which ended up being a baguette! Not a big deal but still wrong. Also people sitting either side of us who were there before us got their food after we did and they only had a small bowl of fries and a panini. They were not impressed. The young guy making coffee was in serious go slow mode and swearing under his breath! And most disappointing was the ice coffee. Literally a sad looking cold coffee with a couple of ice cubes. Actually the most pathetic ice coffee I've ever had! Mug wasn't even full. Rip off for £2.60. Would not recommend.

Very disappointed at this place. Not recommending for this place. Mind yourself to go somewhere else for brunch please. And, at the door the sign said that Amex card is welcome and refused by the server and I asked the reasons for not accepting it and all the sudden she got angry at me. Getting angry at the customer? Not an acceptable behaviour. The staff needs to learn about friendliness to the visitors.

Went to the cafe for lunch, and I ordered a panini. The woman was going to give me a ready-made baguette with the same fillings, but I nicely requested a panini because it was on the menu and I wanted it hot and toasted. She rolled her eyes and sighed rudely. I was with a group of friends who received their food promptly, however mine did not come, and it didn't look like it was getting made. After 15-20 mins I went and asked another man who knew nothing about the panini, so asked the woman to make it. She finally brought it over looking huffy and didn't say anything / apologise for the mix up. Tasty panini and otherwise good service for my friends! Don't know quite why my panini request was so upsetting.

We took a day trip to Oxford and looked for a place to eat a late lunch. We entered the Covered Market and after wandering around for a bit settled on the Oxford Café, mainly because most of the other restaurants were closed for the hours between lunch and dinner. There were few other patrons and we easily found a table. The service was slow and the food average. (The menu was rather large, with everything from burgers to wraps to pastries.) Other people were drinking coffee and using their computers. We took our time and read some local newspapers before we paid and left. The price was reasonable for the food.If I returned I’d probably order a coffee and relax in the leisurely atmosphere.

To be fair, the café (and market generally) was absolutely heaving with visitors so perhaps it was understandable that service was quite slow - and that our meals didn't arrive together. The food was fine - and quite cheap. It was quite cramped in here - which on one hand gave it character - but on the other, meant the waiter and waitresses having to squeeze past every few minutes.

Tables quite close together so at a busy time was a little claustrophobic. If you have soft drinks you have to get it yourself from the fridge which again meant fighting through the queue. The person serving could not see us to bring the food so left it on the side so my friends panini was a little cold. Took another while to bring my paratha. However having said all this the food was very nice and reasonably priced.

First of all when walking in the counter had no customers and yet it took ages to get served and even to just get acknowledged by one of the 3 members of staff! We ordered a slice of Ferrero Roche cake with tea and coffee and I was looking forward to the cake very much especially as it was nearly £4 a slice. As far as I was concerned it was not the right cake, what we were given was alcoholic and when we questioned this the lady said no, then maybe and changed it for us. For someone who has grown up in Oxford I knew covered market would be a bit pricey, but in general any cafe in city centre is anyway. However in this case I was so disappointed, if they actually labelled the food with prices I could have left but ended up spending a fiver on a tiny baguette with one slither of sun-dried tomato and spinach. That price could have been justified if the money was actually put towards the staff pay checks, but obviously would not have been.

What I was served was a paltry, Dry, flavourless facsimile of the dish, served with a sad looking, half hearted attempt at a salad. There weren't even any sauces available to spruce up my roll. We visited for a light lunch on a sunday with the kids. On entering several of the tables hadn't been cleared from previous customers. We cleared a table so that the four of us could sit down. Our drinks arrived first after a 10 minute wait, followed five minutes later by the food, except my panini. I had to go and ask them where it was, which took another five minutes before it arrived. My husband's toastie was luke warm and slightly over done. They did do a ham and cheese toastie for our son that wasn't on the menu. The chips were lukewarm, but the strawberry milk shakes were nice. Milk wasn't brought automatically with the tea. Whilst we were in there for at least half an hour, no tables were cleared or cleaned, despite the fact that by the time we left there were four members of staff in there. My wife ordered at the counter and as we were only having drinks one would assume someone would prepare these and you would carry them to your table as is the practice in most establishments. For me a hot chocolate......hot isn't a word I would of used I had to take it back as it was semi warm verging on cold. My Panini was semi warm and as it had chicken in it I was a bit worried that it was cooked chicken and been in a fridge that the Panini wasn't hot nor was the chicken which isn't very good health and safety. My fathers Panini was ok but he did have the strawberry milkshake which he didn't enjoy. The tables were not very clean I had to wipe ours as it had either jam or ketchup on it. How very disappointing lunch was in this place. The outside looks okay. Inside the grained wooden tables need a good scrub. If you can find any without dirty plates stacked on them. Slide your hand over the top and it sticks to the greasy surface. Absolutely awful. Fish and chips arrived with soggy, overcooked chips so few in number as to be hidden under the fish. The tartare sauce came in a stainless steel milk jug with something smeared all around the outside of the jug. The milk jug for the tea was even stickier with several stains and sticky bits on the jug handle. I'm no ammonia-loving cleaning fanatic but this place, at least when I visited and where I sat, was dirty. The salt pot was empty, I found three full ones in a corner, no ketchup nor brown sauce to hand or offered. The boy bringing our plates to the table did not seem to have much idea about waiting on tables. Having had fish and chips at Brown's cafe elsewhere in the Covered Market, I will never come here again, it simply does not compare. Deserves to go out of business.

I went to the Oxford Cafe last week with my dad for a quick lunch. It wasn't particularly busy, lots of tables free but every single table had an assortment of dirty dishes on it which wasn't very welcoming. We both chose an already made baguette out of the fridge and he had a coffee. We were told to sit down and our food would be brought too us soon. We sat for 20 minutes with no sign of our food coming out. A family of five had come in, ordered and received their cooked meals way before we got our baguettes! In the end we received our food, my baguette wasn't even really what I had ordered but by that point I couldn't be bothered to complain!

I went to the Oxford Cafe with my brother and boyfriend. They offer alot of organic stuff at very reasionable prices. Both my boy friend and brother ordered their full english breakfast which was served on time. I ordered a yummy toastie on open sourdough sandwiches with avocado and crispy bacon on top. We loved our food. They were big portion, enough to satisfy the boys. After lunch we decided to try their brownies and cakes . OMG their caramel crunch cheesecake was to die for. We all had amazing amazing time and left complimenting the food and venue. Both girls working at the front were friendly and helpful. Will definitely go again

The Oxford Cafe's menu is very impressive- I'll give it that. However on a Saturday at 1pm, only 3 types of baguettes were available, and the staff were not making any more.Upon entering the Cafe, I could see that it was extremely cramped, to the point of claustrophobic proportions. There were 2 tables that were free, but both were covered with dishes left by previous patrons that were long gone. After queueing to order for about 15 minutes, I finally get to the till and inform the employee about the dirty tables. I asked him if we could get the dirty plates moved, as there wasn't room to sit. His response? "We're a little busy right now..." What?? Am I the only one confused by the gall of this response? You're busy so you're basically turning customers away? WHO RUNS THIS PLACE?? It gets better (worse). After waiting an hour for our food (not a lie, 1 whole hour), we were informed by the waitress (who asked us twice what our order was) that the delay was due to a lack of plates...incredible. The adjacent table and its accompanying chair was covered by a mountain of plates (literally) moved there by CUSTOMERS, who were clearing the tables so that they would have a place to sit! I should have left when I had the chance. What's even more appalling is that after notifying us about the shortage of plates, she walked right by said table with the dirty dishes and back into the kitchen area. 10 minutes later, a male employee comes over a picks up a pile of dirty dishes- about 1/3 of the mountain (the remainder is ignored). 5 minutes later our food comes out. The plate on which it is served is dripping wet. This is the kind of place I would pay to LEAVE. Without food!

In the covered market there a tens of amazing places to get simple things like a sandwich or a panini. This place was a massive let down. I paid almost 6 pounds for my panini. .Please take a look at the photo I uploaded. Outrageous. There is a better sandwich shop around the corner, don't get disappointed, don't eat here.

I've been twice to this cafe and on both occasions I didn't feel that I got my money's worth in coffee and in warm food. I could overhear people making complaints and that was quite off-puting. It has nice décor and looks cosy, and the ratatouille tasted nice, but I, personally, won't return and give this place a third chance.

I was visiting my son who lives and works in Oxford. We looked at a number of places as we fancied a big fried breakfast at 12.10 Saturday lunchtime, with him vegitarian and me not. We had checked out several other places and discounted them and arrived at the Oxford Cafe purely by chance. We decided to try it and first things firs - the food was outstanding and the attitude of the staff was first class. The atmosphere was busy - rarely an empty table at all and although we had a slight wait for our food of about 10 minutes, as it was so busy this was quite acceptable.Overall then it was excellent and will certainly be on the list for future excursions.

The all-day veggie breakfast came with a slice of bacon and a pork sausage. Oh dear. The baguettes, though, were generously filled and the bread was tasty. The soup was very good. Service was friendly but slow. It is a bit cramped inside -- more than it should be because too many of the chairs are just too big for the space available.

The Oxford Café is a small Freetrade and organic café in Oxford's famous Covered Market. It is almost a sandwich bar but they do have baked potatoes and other snacks. The seating is a bit squashed but cosy. Lots of people takeaway sandwiches which are fresh and interesting. The 'death-by-chocolate' is very rich and solid - really yummy! There are various cakes and pastries too. There are a few tables outside in the internal avenues of the covered Market. There are no toilet facilities but if you walk through to Market Street, you will find recently refurbished toilets.

As far as central Oxford cafes/eateries go, it's OK. The prices were reasonable, but I just hope that the Americano, which I was served today, was a one-off bad experience. My wife enjoyed her hot chocolate and my son really liked his drink and the Death by Chocolate cake.I may return, if I am in Oxford, but I won't make a special trip to return.

I wouldn't recommend this place if you're visiting Oxford and this was your only chance to visit an eaterie- it's not a MUST visit- there are more charming spots to find. On the other hand I live in Oxford and enjoy the subtle differences of each cafe so here's what I enjoyed: I love the covered market and enjoy sitting in a cafe surrounded by it. It also has something a little unusual on the menu which is essentially why I was drawn in- there is a hint of Indian cuisine here- past the usual baguettes and sandwiches were parathas and chai tea on the menu. I had both- my paratha was paneer, aloo and onion served with chips and side salad which was odd but tasted good in their own right. My partner had a sandwich which looked lovely and tasted so. Also very cheap- my paratha was £4.95.Staff were kind and genuine and I liked the atmosphere although decor is lacking. I enjoyed my visit but I was looking out the window at the little cafe upstairs on the other side of the covered market and thought how I'd come back to THAT cafe instead.

I visited Oxford Cafe last month after hearing great things about it from friends. Great food, big helpings, friendly staff and prompt service makes it a must visit for anyone visiting Oxford. Moreover, its stylish interior designing it gave a true Oxford feel. The best thing about its menu was that it had the best of both western and eastern cuisines. With offerings of eastern delicacies like Paratha roll (something you dont get in Oxford) it made us feel at home. The tasty & freshly squeezed orange juice truly made our day. The only downside was that we had to wait for 10 mins as it was packed but the staff accommodated us at the earliest.Since then it has become a regular hangout for me and my friends and its highly recommended.

Staff weren't welcoming to us as a family with young children - we had to fetch our own high chair and find room for it, and when we requested hot water to help us warm our baby's food, the waitress looked at us as if we were crazy. Though in general staff were ok.A bit overcrowded, don't take cards so I had to leave to get cash out of a machine, and then our food took about half an hour to arrive, and was very average. Not too expensive though. It's probably nicer for a cup of tea than food. We won't be going back to eat.

It looks pleasant enough from the outside but this cafe, in terms of both food and overall experience, is not good at all.Service speed was not too bad, though serving the cakes before the food seems the wrong way round to me and the food arrived separately with a gap of around 5 minutes. These gripes are minor compared to the quality of the food. My chicken tikka masala wrap was not unpleasant but nonetheless very bland. My friend complained her burger was completely tasteless. She had to season it with salt just so it tasted of something. You do not get proper chips with the food either. The salad was OK.My tea was nice enough, my friend's chai was unbearably sweet. The cakes are nice but they are bought, not made on site. The food is bad and the service is subpar. I know Oxford gets a lot of tourists, just as I was when I went here, but with so many competitors nearby and increasingly clued up visitors, I was surprised by the lack of quality at this cafe. They need a rethink for sure.

We had to wait for over 45mins for two normal English breakfast and one veggie breakfast. The meat sausages wee still blood red and raw and the veggie breakfast went cold while I had to argue with 2 members of staff and the cook that it was raw and demand a refund which they didn't want to give. They only gave a refund for one meal even though all three meals were undercooked. The menu states all food is freshly cooked yet ours was put in the microwave. The staff never even said they were sorry about the food or the wait.I will never eat here again and would never recommend this place to anyone.

Me and my girlfriend walked in for a late afternoon drink and cake on our day trip to Oxford! We both ordered the Caramel Cheesecake (Bought in not home made) and before we had finished placing our order, waitress was preparing our plates which was rude. At least finish taking our order before getting everything ready. I eventually ordered a Cappuccino and originally my better half wanted Orange juice but was unwilling to pay £3 for the pleasure and opted for a bottle of Coke. She wasn't offered a glass or ice.We were told to take a seat by the waitress who had forgotten to smile. Coffee took so long to arrive, cheesecake was eaten before I received the coffee. "How long does it take to make a coffee" one user mentioned? Apparently a long time. When coffee did come out, it was a very small portion (Even by Cappuccino standards) and was AT LEAST1/3 foam. Coffee had a dirty flavour to it and an unpleasant aftertaste. I had to wash the flavour out with my girlfriends Coke. We did get a pleasant goodbye as we left by a DIFFERENT member of staff. But it was too late. Do you like visiting coffee shops with Rude Staff? Over Priced Coffee? Cheap brought in cakes? and a Dank atmosphere? Then The Oxford Café is the place for you. If however you like good service, good coffee, reasonable prices and a nice atmosphere. I recommend going literally anywhere. I'm sure a homeless guy on the street would turn down a coffee from that place.

Yep, another day trip to Oxford having been introduced to Knoops last December. A range from 34% to 80% this time. Three out of four excellent. The 80% was rather disappointing, probably down to the fact that it was vegan ( had not spotted that) such that different milk was used and possibly more water. Will concentrate on the 70% for our next visit. Blueberry slices and Pain au Chocolat both fabulous. And great service. Hayling Seagoon

Extremely inefficient staff. Very very slow service at an off-peak time. Seems the two staff on shift are either clearly trainee or just clueless. The girl keeps hiding when one or two people walk in. Customers walking out!!
