We visited the Oxenham Arms twice over our week in Dartmoor. Both times the food was delicious and the staff friendly and inviting. On our visits we had the beef shin, mushroom linguine and pork belly and would happily recommend any one of them as a main course. They were all very tasty. The stand out though was the cheese souffle starter - absolutely delicious! We will definitely visit again when we are in the area.

Another fabulous stay at The Oxenham. 2 nights in January 24. Perfect for walking the Belstone / Scorhill end of Dartmoor. Food is delicious, can recommend the Cumberland sausages and mash. Only hotel I've ever stayed in with standing stones inside the building. Always a warm welcome here - a lovely place to stay with bags of character and history.

Dog friendly? Don't be fooled. My main recommendation is don't rely on website info for this pub. Or go to The Post Inn, Whiddon Down instead, for a proper dog friendly experience (and much cheaper food!). NB worth noting that none of our 8 are serial 1 star-ers. Credit where it's due and all that! But all of us felt compelled to review. Lucky you that 8 reviews are compiled into this 1. 1. The Oxenham Arms is not dog friendly. Having reviewed the dog status online, it tries to promote dog friendliness. But note - ONLY in bar and garden. THERE ARE MORE ROOMS PEOPLE. Dogs are not allowed in any of the other eating areas. We didnt realise there were any other rooms to choose from when booking so didn't feel the need to specify our 4 legged friends were joining us when booking. 2. WORSE than this, on arrival, we had been allocated to a room seating ONLY US 8. Dogs would have been absolutely fine in there. The management team were worried about upsetting other diners?! Oh? But there were none?! On speaking to the owner, he was worried about his carpet. Hmm. Dog would have been left at home if likely to vomit or poop. Fart maybe, but then so do the humans. 3. Further to 2, no baby changing facilities. This was done on the in the room we were seated. Don't worry, we cleared our own human poop up! As we would at home - with our mini humans, and our dogs. 4. Manageress would benefit from some people skills training. Separately and without provocation, we had all thought how rude she was. So that's a consensus of 8 individuals opinion. (Yes, we were all perfectly polite at all times). 5. Menus. Not as described! So dont go choosing your 1st & 2nd options from the online menu - the physical menu was very different. This has been highlighted to the owner, as well as broken links online, so this may well be addressed! If you're lucky... 6. Yes we contacted the establishment, after spending £240 on meals/drinks for 8 peope to highlight our experience and give feedback, which we hope they listen to. No, we didnt complain at the time as we were committed after half an hour of car faffing to sort dogs out, BEFORE realising the room was in fact, nowhere near another diner. And we were hungry. But... see point 7 7. Food very good btw! As was the gentleman serving us. Thank you for the welcome & service, you lovely man, with a smile!

Testament to a lifetime of rigorous personal sacrifice my friend has highly tuned pub finding skills. So it was that five of us came to be booked in for Sunday lunch on the way back from a weekend in Cornwall. The welcome was warm, the lunch delicious, beautifully presented and accompanied by fine ales from the Dartmoor brewery. The history, food and hospitality make the Oxenham Arms an absolute gem of a pub. I can't understand why my friend hadn't found it earlier!

Looking for a good quality place to stay near Okehampton, this was the perfect find for us. Wonderful room, full of character, equipped with everything we needed and super-clean (can't be easy in such a quirky historical building). Peaceful surroundings and an extremely comfy super-king four poster bed meant a great night's sleep. We had dinner in the bar on arrival and both starters and mains were excellent - the fish (as in fish & chips) was the best we'd had in a very long while. No room for desserts, but breakfast the next morning was of equal quality. Lovely friendly service, and very interesting to read about the famous folk who've dined or stayed before. Highly recommend - and we'll be back for dessert one day!

Once again the Oxenham Arms made us feel so very welcome for a superb dinner in the delightful bar. We visited with ‘foodie’ friends who were visiting the area one of whom had “the best scallops and steak he had tasted for years” and he declared us very fortunate to live close to such a wonderful pub/restaurant/hotel. The Oxenham Arms has friendly and welcoming owners and staff, an excellent chef who uses the superb local ingredients to create wonderous dishes, the wines are varied and interesting and if the success of a pub is judged by the amount of locals who frequent it, then this establishment is truly doing something right! Oh, and the building positively groans with history too!

We came by this place by accident. My wife and I were out looking for somewhere for lunch, to celebrate our Wedding Anniversary. We had already looked at two pubs, one of which had nothing on the menu we liked, and the other one was shut on that particular day. Then we stumbled upon the Oxenham Arms, looked at the menu outside and decided to venture in! We were approached by a lady who asked if she could be of help, and feeling in a frivolous mood I explained that as this was our anniversary, I would like a table facing East, that was discreetly placed, as I might want to make love to my wife after the first course! 'Better take the table in the corner' she proclaimed, and pointed in that direction! When it came to order, I said with a straight face, that I had heard that the food here was ropey, but that I was prepared to give it a go, and promptly ordered steaks for two which were delicious! In short, the banter, the service and the food were a delight, and it was nice to discover somewhere different that we had not visited before. We shall definitely return! Highly recommended!

We found this place via Trip Advisor as South Zeal is a good point to stop enroute to our place in Penzance BUT somehow when we printed off the directions via Trip Advisor a Post code for 10 miles away appeared! We eventually found the place having called. We showed the printed pages to a very disinterested Landlord who treated us though we were idiots! The food was good but this clearly a place past its peak with the landlady and landlord clearly tired and overworked. I imagine it will be up for sale soon? Apparently The Kings Arms is much better?

Valentine’s Day Dinner with live music. What a wonderful evening. Very talented classical guitar music by Stephen Yates, excellent service by John, Ella and Lyn and amazing amazing meal. I had the vegetarian options - vegetable tempura to start then a butternut squash filo parcel followed by a strawberry and pepper creme brûlée followed by Lyn’s exquisite chocolates. My husband had difficulty choosing as all the options were so tempting. He eventually settled on confit duck spring roll to start and roast halibut on lemon and chorizo risotto. He said it was excellent. All washed down with a lovely Malbec. How lucky are we to live close to somewhere providing such a high quality product, service, ambience, music, wine and food. A wonderful evening. Thank you.

Slight hiccough over reservation which was done on line but not initially traced. Apart from that, the evening was great. Three ales to choose from. Main meals were just right in size, duck breast particularly good. Really liked the idea of mini-puds and coffee combined for very reasonable price. Sitting in the room right next to the menhir (prehistoric stone) embedded in the wall was a new experience. This was my third visit to the Oxenham Arms Restaurant in three years. Yet again you cannot fault it. It is a traditional pub, for those wanting a drink and a chat, but it is also a classy or slightly up market restaurant for those wanting a step up from pub grub. Best to book in advance, as it can get fully booked during the high season. Having been to the Oxenham three times before, am looking forward to our fourth visit, the next time we visit Dartmoor.

We have only recently moved to live in the area and had been told that the Oxenham Arms was the place to go for something “a bit more special”. On that recommendation, when the family came to stay, we booked a table for dinner with high expectations. I was immediately disappointed to be seated in the bar at a table with a fairly uncomfortable bench seat. Perhaps this was my fault for not requesting a table in the dining room when I booked online. It immediately turned what I thought was going to be a special evening into something very ordinary. We all enjoyed our starters and sweets but the consensus was that the mains were disappointing and overpriced. The service was fine and the chap behind the bar was friendly and made us feel welcome. Sadly I doubt we will be rushing back, which is a shame since we are living so close now.

The location alone would be enough to earn the Oxenham Arms 5 stars, even if it wasn't for the excellent beer and food. Tucked away in a deep, Devon Valley beneath the granite strewn slopes of Cosdon Hill, this is a lovely place to be simply for its own sake. Add friendly service, delicious food, good beer and a respectable wine list and there's really not much more you could ask. What you get is Pinot the Cat, a friendly tabby kitten who added an enchanting touch to our visit.

It was our wedding anniversary and was looking for somewhere nearby that had good reviews and lovely food. I booked a table on line. Unfortunately i mistakenly assumed i had booked a table in the restaurant. When we arrived it was quite busy in the bar. No staff around just locals that stared as we walked in. Then the barman arrived and pointed us to a table. It was a lovely quirky old bar. We ordered the scotch egg starter which was delicious. Then i had the butternut squash ravioli and my husband had fish and chips. I was quite full but was keen to have something sweet. They do a nice selection of mini puds with coffee. I had the sticky toffee pudding. This was the perfect size. Although there only seemed to be the barman on. He was doing drinks, taking and bringing out orders and clearing away. We had a bit of banter with him. Not quite the night out we were expecting and a little disappointed to be paying same price to sit in a cramped bar as we would have in the restaurant. I assume restaurant not.open in the week?

A beguiling history of this establishment meant we chose it as one of our places to eat whilst visiting Devon and we weren't disappointed. A former Benedictine monastery and home to an infamous 16th century pirate gives this inn a 'wow' factor even before entering. Located in South Zeal, this is a warm and welcoming inn, with cozy nooks next to roaring log fires and historic facts peppering the wall. The service was excellent, dogs are warmly welcome and the food delicious. An eclectic menu but all beautifully prepared and presented, from venison, pork belly, chicken and vegetarian options. Slightly pricier than your average inn, but definitely worth the price, especially the coffee and mini sticky toffee pudding recommended by my friend!

Stopped off for lunch without a booking and received a warm welcome in spite of a large party occupying the restaurant. We ate in the bar and the service was faultless. It was a damp drizzly day and we wanted comfort food. The stilton, walnut and leek pie hit the spot. It was served with a generous portion of mash and gravy on the side. It was not a casserole with a puffed lit- it was crisp shortcrust top and bottom with an unctuous filling. Maybe the veg could have been a bit more interesting. Yellowhammer beer from Exeter was a good match. The pub has an interesting history and it is thought that Dickens stayed when he was writing Pickwick Papers- what a fab place for a weekend out of the city- we regretted that we were only passing through

My family and I had a wonderful meal last night at the themed Italian Night. The quality of the food was superb. I had gnocchi, others had shin of beef with polenta, or thin crust pizza, arrancini with nduja spicy sausage......and the desserts were amazing. The portion sizes were good and the wine was flowing well :-) Thank you to the whole team for a memorable family night out.

We ate there recently. We won’t return. Quaint establishment not backed up by service which was diabolical. Food was fine, but the managers seem to have a problem engaging with customers as if they are doing the customer a favour. No, terribly arrogant with a tendency to belittle the customer. If only they weren’t so ignorant of the public and their expectations.

I happen to see an old episode of "four in a bed" and this jogged my memory of lunch at the Oxenham. I have visited on several occaisions, the building is beautiful but the food and service left a lot to be desired. I ordered the homemade steak and ale pie which was overpriced for the size of the dish and was particularly dissapointing when I had three mouthfulls of fatty meat, which totally put me off and I had to leave the pie. When the plate was cleared by the owner, I wasn't asked if everything was alright so I told her that the meat fatty no comment was made by her. a couple of minutes later the bill was brought over and I was told that the price of the meal had been taken off, I said that I didnt make the cooment to receive a free meal.My mum had wanted a coffee but it felt as though we were being thrown out for criticising the food. The reason I refer to "four in a bed" was that the other B&B; owners commented on the inability of the proprietors of The Oxenham in accepting criticism !! On the plus side the barman was very nice.

5 stars. Another fantastic visit to this grand monastery. Very warm welcome from the moment we arrived, layed back relaxing atmosphere staff were very pleasant. Drinks were spot on, food local, fresh and very tasty. I am a vegetarian and was not disappointed. Such a beautiful place for any time of day/ night we will return it’s our favourite place to eat. Even had a warm welcome from the cat, who enjoyed the roaring fire, warm and cosy.

We visited this establishment in April and wrote a fairly mild report in trip advisor. We received a vitriolic response from the owner that upset us very much. We decided to return recently and check our original view of the place. First of all when we were there earlier this year we ate lunch in the bar and on our return did the same. We felt the food was acceptable for a road-house and for all their claims of AA excellence and so on it is exactly what it is.
The owner is clearly on an ego trip and responds badly to even the most gentle critical appraisal.
We didn't stay there and have no idea what the rooms are like. The bar area is still warm and welcoming which is more than can be said of the owners who still didn't appear. The cash machine I referred to in my earlier report was the till.
In response to our earlier report the owner made some comment of a report we wrote about a neighbouring establishment closing unless the locals used it. It closed! - However I am glad to say it is being resurrected under new ownership so we look forward to visiting.
If like us you seek a more friendly environment for lunch you might enjoy a visit to one or more establishments in neighbouring villages. Being aggressively rude to your guests even at a distance through trip advisor is not the surest way of attracting business.

We have visited here before, but only if we have been travelling in this area. every time we go, its the same, it doesn't seem to matter what time of year or who is running it. I think my husband keeps hoping it will be better, but it never is. It is a lovely old place, I agree. it isn't maintained well. we sat in the bar area, the windows were covered in cobwebs and didn't look like they had been washed/cleaned in a long while. My chair had a hole in the upholstery and generally the place looked a little under loved. The log burner wasn't going, despite the weather being wretched for days, cold and wet. we were told no light meals were served (at all), not everyone wants a full blown lunch. what was on the menu looked ok (going by what came out from the kitchen), but quite a limited menu. as we couldn't have a light lunch, we had 2 bags of crisps which were £2.20! by anyones standards, this was a stupid price, they were just a standard bag and not that pleasant, very greasy. Its a pretty little village but the pub really thinks it is something it isn't. The sign says luxury accommodation, going by the bar, I doubt that very much. On a finishing point, the place stunk of fish, which apparently is fresh, I doubt that too, it shouldn't smell that bad. The person (older male) behind the bar, in my opinion, didn't have a clue how to speak to customers - he was lucky my husband is a gentleman - you should only speak to people in that manner if you know them - am very happy to spend my money elsewhere.

Came for a meal with friends and enjoyed a fantastic and beautifully presented 3 course meal. I had the soup to start with that came with a large wedge of freshly cut bread. For mains I had the chicken which was extremely tasty. Dessert was the panna cotta which was very tasty. Overall a fantastic meal that was presented as if in an expensive 5* restaurant and excellent value. The staff are very friendly which added to the overall experience. If not for the fact I'm visiting the area (from the North East) I would now choose here as my regular venue for a great night out. Many thanks.Would recommend to anyone.

Labelled as a 4* Inn and truly up to the mark. Informal and friendly staff and very efficient. You want to try their Poached pear and coffee. They say dynamite comes in small packages well the poached pear was a real explosive treat. That was just the finish. For main meal we had homemade steak and ale pud with mash and crushed peas and the gnocchi was superb so I'm told. All in all a very enjoyable evening. As for the ancient bit you will have to look and touch the menhir. Well done to owners and staff.

If you're looking for an incredible venue, fantastic service and brilliant food you will not be disappointed. We booked in purely based on trip advisor reviews as we passed by and felt they accurately reflected the above.HOWEVER, this is probably not an ideal venue for young children or wheelchair users as there are no changing facilities or disabled toilets. Also, heaven help you if your 2 year old daughter has a stinky poo in her nappy.... the management will make it known to you that it stinks and that people are eating and you will be shamed by the vast amounts of panicked air freshener being manically sprayed everywhere. We decided not to stay for dessert incase the six month old decided to poo too.....

We stayed here for two nights, so we had 2 breakfasts and 2 evening meals. First, the atmosphere of the place is inviting. You step in the front door and you are drawn inside by the ambience of the place. They have a cozy bar area with 3 real ales on hand pump, and a cider. It's a full bar, but they have a crazy number of whiskeys available at decent prices. The evening menu isn't huge but they have a good selection (2 types of steak, pork, fish, and a veg choice). Plus starters and desserts. We had a group of seven and between us all, we had every main and each was delicious and well portioned. Words just don't do this place justice. Quality pub, quality accommodation. The history behind the building itself is enough to draw you in, and you won't want to leave. :)

Called on spec as were on holiday in the area for an evening meal. Firstly what an interesting historic building with information around to read. Secondly the staff were friendly and polite and had a conversation with you if you wanted them to. Thirdly the food was very good. The mackerel croquettes were great with a tomatoes sauce with a kick. The soup was gorgeous. My husband had the steak and ale pie which he gave a 10 out of 10 to ( high praise indeed from him) . The puddings looked delicious but unfortunately neither of us had room for them . I would defiantly return to this establishment.

After a long day's travelling, we arrived in time to have dinner and it was superb! The lamb was sweet and tender and juicy, the potatoes were delicious, my beloved chose the salmon and loved it - commenting how he has eaten all around the world (as have I) and it was genuinely the best food he had eaten in a hotel. There is a very good wine list, we tried several reds and enjoyed each different one.All prices were very reasonable, especially for such high-quality fare.We stayed at the hotel for 2 nights and didn't eat anywhere else!

We'd been travelling and eating mainly in pubs so we wanted a "proper restaurant " we were not disappointed. I had the fillet steak which was obviously from a really good butcher, it was perfect. The chips were amazing. Service was excellent, best to book I imagine it gets full very quickly. Lovely ambience, really interesting place too.
