I came for lunch today with my girlfriend for the Sunday roast, and... what can I say? Simply everything was perfect, from the kind and helpful staff, to the really comfortable and relaxing environment, not to mention the food! Really tasty, well presented and gratifying for the palate. Compliments to the chefs. I recommend this place to everyone, it is suitable for both families and friends etc.☆☆☆☆☆

The website is advertising a 40% discount on food before 7pm so she we called to reserve a table they advised a table no later than 6.45pm so we could get our order in. We sat down and ordered drinks which arrived promptly. At 6.48pm I called the waiter over and asked if we could order ‘because we didn’t want to miss out on the 40% off food’. Our order was taken (on paper, so no time stamp) and we waited approximately 20 mins for starters followed by about 30 mins for the mains. All the food was great (albeit my steak was medium rare not rare) but still great none the less. We had numerous drinks and the atmosphere was lovely. Fast forward to paying the bill and there was no 40% off food. 4 people, bread and olives to start, followed by 4 steaks with sides and a few glasses of wine and the bill was £255. We didn’t make a fuss as it was a celebratory evening but be mindful that just because a discount is promoted, doesn’t mean you’ll get it!!!!

One of the best steaks I have ever had the pleasure of eating. Not to mention the quality of even the chips! Service was fantastic as well. I hope to return soon. 2024 Update: I've been probably 6 times now, once a year, roughly, since my first visit. Each time has been exceptional with the most recent being as good as any other visit. The ribeye with peppercorn sauce and chips was everything I wanted it to be. S-tier consistency from this establishment.

Went here for dinner on a Thursday night. The steak was delicious, ordered medium rare but was medium, it was delicious so no issue. The green peppercorn sauce wasn't great, tasted a bit synthetic. The mushrooms were delicious. The scallops I could eat every day, just incredible. I had a lovely meal it was overall very enjoyable. The restaurant is down steep stairs. As someone with a mild mobility issue it was very hard and made doubly so due to the rain.

For starters we had the scallops and ribs. Scallops were nice but the ribs were not great. Very dry and didn’t feel fresh at all. We really enjoyed our steaks and my fillet was cooked to utter perfection. The sides were good but very greasy/buttery (broccoli, mushrooms and greens). Not sure we’ll rush back but we didn’t have a bad meal.

We visited the Ox in October for my partners birthday we had a great meal not one fault on a table of 6 of us and couldn’t recommend enough to friends and family. Unfortunately we visited this month and were extremely disappointed. Our friends from the midlands were staying with us and said we had just the place to take them for a good steak! Average at best, over £430 for 4 people (we did have the sharing steaks however on this particular night I wouldn’t say was worth the money) Starters were lukewarm, the steak (30oz) didn’t seem as big as last time. The service wasn’t great the waiters weren’t as attentive as the previous time, we could of easily drunk another 2 drinks each if offered. The restaurant was less than half full on arrival and upon leaving there were 3 tables (including us) left so not exactly rushed off their feet on the waiting staff-customers ratio. Mac and cheese however 10/10 my highlight of the night.

I recently visited The Ox in Bristol for the second time, and unfortunately, it was a thoroughly disappointing experience. Despite the restaurant not being busy, the service was incredibly slow. We managed to finish an entire bottle of wine before our meal even arrived, which is unacceptable given the lack of customers. When the food finally did arrive, my steak was overcooked and far from the quality I expected. For a restaurant that prides itself on its meat dishes, this was particularly disappointing. The overall service was mediocre at best, with staff showing little interest or urgency. The atmosphere was also underwhelming. Given this was my second visit and nothing had improved, I won't be returning again. There are plenty of better dining options in Bristol.

Not what it used to be. It seems like they're getting their meat from a new supplier because the steak was very average. Completely edible but like something you'd expect at a chain restaurant. It might be partly down to the cooking as the steak didn't really have much of a crust. Sides and sauces were generally decent, some not so good, like the completely unseasoned asparagus complete with inedible chewy end section left on. Service was generally good, but the guy who initially greeted us at the bar seemed extremely moody. It's a real shame because this place used to be something special.

Me and my friends came here last night and I had really high expectations as word-of-mouth about this place had been really good. It’s a great location and lovely setting inside but the food is average for what they are charging. Last night I paid £32 for a tiny fillet steak that was overcooked after asking for medium rare (no juices whatsoever). You don’t get any sides with the steak and the sides are hugely overpriced. The mains didn’t arrive until around 21:35 when our table was booked from 20:00 and they still seemed surprised when we asked to remove the service charge. I would recommend pasture or Miller and Carter for a really good steak if that’s what you’re looking for. Maybe the roast dinner is better here!

Here is the deal with the Ox. The atmosphere is great, and combined with the prices it definitely gives off a fine dining vibe; unfortunately the rest of the experience falls short. The food is pretty good, but very expensive for what it is; if you are charging £30 for a cut of meat, you better be sure that it is impeccable. As it stands, it was just "pretty good". As for the service, we were there during lunchtime, and while our server wasn't rude, they definitely weren't nice either. They seemed annoyed that we showed up (we had a reservation), and overall had an unwelcoming demeanour. They were like this to another table, so it probably wasn't us. Again, if you are charging £30 for food, maybe your servers should smile a bit, say welcome, and generally make you feel welcome? In summary, if you cannot get a reservation at Pasture, this place is "good enough".

I’ve rated “very good” based on good alone. Because it is. I went last Friday (5th April) with 6 colleagues and the food was delicious. The steak was cooked how I wanted, the chips were delicious and the leeks and greens side dish was sublime. Absolutely no quibble about the food However….the rest of it…. The prices I don’t think are justified. You HAVE to choose everything separately on the menu and I’m sorry but to charge £4.50 for an accompanying sauce or butter is daylight robbery. It should be included within the price of the steaks, which, let’s be honest, aren’t cheap at either £32 or £34 each. Then the chips. SIX POUNDS for a serving of triple cooked chips? Really? What are they fried in, liquid gold? That’s astronomical. The skin on fries were £4.50. Yes, it’s a business, yes it has to turn a profit but paying those sorts of prices when they really are just being greedy annoys me. Same for the sides. We only had leeks and greens and they were really delicious but £6 each and the dish is TINY. The lighting is what I assume meant to be “atmospheric” but in reality it’s like eating in a cave by torchlight and no I’m not joking. It’s seriously dark and needs to have more lighting to avoid eye strain when reading the menu. Overall, it’s nice food but it could be much more fairly priced and the restaurant could definitely be improved.

For balance - please see the numerous 5 star reviews. The food is good and service was prompt and friendly. We never felt rushed or that anything was too much trouble. So why 3 stars? There is a lot of better steak for a lot less is Bristol. Sorry guys, but when you are paying what you pay, it needs to be a lot better. Presenting a plate with a steak and nothing else when sides had been ordered was a bit disappointing. The food could have been presented to impress, which when you are paying a lot. I kind of expected. - perhaps unfairly. Possibly caught them on an Off night and would happily try them again.

Absolutely terrible! First warning should have been that it was too dark to read the menu, but we perservered. Service was shocking, waitress were rude and uninterested, tried to catch their attention lots of time - they made eye contact and then kept walking. No one checked if our food was OK and we were left waiting for ages for drinks. The only thing the service was prompt with was the bill to which they promptly added a 20% service charge. Unless this was a charge for ignoring customers I'm not sure what this was for! Food was terrible - steaks were dry, lacked flavour. The Chimchurri sauce was more oil than anything and the garlic butter was garlic margerine. It says a lot when they even mess up a caesar salad and the best part of your meal was the frozen oven chips that came with it. Bathrooms were also dirty. These things should be made clear in advance, they had my details from internet booking. Steak ordered and arrived cold. Garlic butter wouldn’t even melt on it. Given excuses but they did cook me a second. Second one arrived over done and still not much warmer. Given the blab about temperature and delivering steak as requested etc. Funny I had an almost identical steak at a well known steak chain that arrived both hot and cook as requested.. Went to the Ox for a roast and had the beef. - Mostly average in quality expected more for the price considering there are better roasts in Bristol for cheaper. - Received a small portion of meat, just 2 thin slices of beef. The food was ok but nothing amazing. - Potatoes were dry and stale tasting The room was a little bit too dark, I get it’s the aesthetic of the place but you couldn’t see what you were eating. The music was a bit too loud so you had to raise your voice to have a conversation. I really wanted to love the Ox, it is set underground in a cosy romantic basement with rich fittings. A perfect date spot so I thought. Firstly we were seated in front of a door leading to a storage room, this door was utilised numerous times and each time it was opened we were hit with a wall of stench. The cocktails prices are eye watering, the cocktails themselves are from from anything special and were served in an uninspired glass decorated with a cardboard straw and a cherry on a stick (Wetherspoons puts in more effort on this front), the mix was also average with a tendency toward too bitter. Let me say the starting meat platter was incredible but this was followed by the biggest disappointment, the steak, cooked with a strong taste of burned meat we needed to return the dish, you would think the steak is the one thing the Ox would have nailed … honestly, so disappointing. Their home made ice cream was hit and miss. This whole let down was only offset by the incredible staff. We won’t be back. If you’re in Bristol and want a great date venue in the same vein, try Pasture in Bristol, they too charge a mint but their offering won’t leave you feeling ripped off.

Not a good experience. Starters, we both had scallops which were pretty good. Main course, I had £34 rib eye steak. Supposed to be 10oz, definitely wasn't and I very much doubt it's uncooked weight was over 6oz. I like rib eye for the fat. This had none and just wasn't very good meat. Certainly I have had better rib eye streaks from Aldi for under a tenner. The prize is only for the steak. Chips were extra. I also ordered a ceaser salad. It had no croutons and no anchovies. So it was basically lettuce with a sauce and some cheese costing £6. Glass is Melbac was good. Staff were friendly. Automatically added 12.5% to the bill, but the waiter made a point of saying it was optional. I was happy to pay that as service was good; the food however was really quite poor and certainly no where near good enough for the price they charge. Went here because we had a £100 voucher that was a gift. Took a while to find because it's a basement or old cellar conversion with a hard to notice small set of fairly steep stairs to navigate. Where we were sat it was so dark to the point I had to use my phones torch to read the menu. Dark wooden panelling decor with low level light bulbs and not many of them. Only place I have ever been that didn't have Jack Daniels at the bar. Served by a very nice woman that was friendly and very competent. We both ordered a fillet steak (because it's advertised as a high quality steakhouse) surprised that it was very expensive and quite small but turned out to be well cooked to my liking tasty and tender, however the sides were very low quality and again very expensive. (My guess would be Supermarket frozen fries, Aunt Bessie's roast potatoes etc) normal time to wait before being given our food so my thoughts are the staff are good and doing their best to please customers, unusual and different location but too dark, way overpriced and I wouldn't recommend or go there again just because of the expense for what you actually get.

Overall this place unfortunately doesn't score 5 stars in my eyes, but I think 4 stars is pretty fair. I think it's a bit overpriced for what it is, especially with a lot of very good alternatives around the corner from this place. Went here with a large group, and I think the food vs. price was not really matching. Paid £34 for 10oz of Ribeye (well cooked i might add), my carbs of choice was potatoes dauphinoise and the potion was disappointingly small for the price. One on my table had a really dry piece of sirloin, that they just couldn't eat, and once we made the waiter aware, we did get it deducted on the final bill, which I thought was a really nice thing to do. Overall, I probably wouldn't come back to the Ox anytime soon I'm afraid. It's worth noting that they do have an early bird menu for £20 quid (incl. Rump, fries, wine and sauce), which I think is really nice and value for money.

Hidden away beneath Spoons is a wonderful restaurant for your Sunday roast. They may share a roof but that's the only thing they have in common. Best roast I've had in central Bristol

Had a very enjoyable evening at The Ox with my family, the food was wonderful and the staff even more so! Our waiter Jack was very attentive and pleasant (apologies to Jack for my mum’s relentless flirting, she doesnt get out much…). Our only note was that there was a slight spillage of cheese sauce as we sat down however we were swiftly taken care of with several glasses of cremant and the very kind offer of dry cleaning and it certainly didn’t dampen our evening. Overall 10/10 will be visiting again.

The service and the mood of the place is excellent. The last few times I have been the quality of the food has been variable. Mind you, it has always been good but it has ranged from “well that was rather nice” to “that is among the best steaks I have ever eaten”. You are going to have a good time regardless.

The starters were great (bone marrow and Scallops). For mains, my wife had the 'Early Bird' which was a good deal; 6oz rump steak, fries, a sauce/butter and a glass of wine or soft drink all for £20. However, my steak (£34) just literally came on its own (no salad, mushroom or tomato etc.). You have to buy everything additionally: Chips £6, butters/sauces £3.50/£4.50, mushrooms £5.50... The steak was ok/good, but not amazing. The chips are not chips, they are wedges; imagine taking a large potato and cutting it into quarters - that's their chips. I'm not a fan of wedges, which isn't the restaurants fault, but had they called them what they are, I wouldn't have ordered them. I have no issue paying good money for good food when eating out, but my £34 steak quickly became a £50 meal with the additional items, and I didn't feel it was worth anywhere near that. The staff were great and the service was good, so full marks on that.

Good Sunday roast. Could do with improving the beer selection. A couple of beers on draft would be good rather than the meagre selection of cans / bottles. Also, can you turn up the lighting so you can see the menus? Some customers were eating by the light of their phones!

A beautiful steak experience. The old fashioned vibe with low lit ambience really sets the scene for this steak & cocktail house. Overall a very tasty meal with good cost to portion size ratio, would recommend.

Omg, that was absolutely bangin. Cracking roast at the Ox. Everything was super tasty. Had the porchetta, and it was nice and tender, had plenty of roast potatoes which were nice and crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. Cauliflower cheese came with the meal, so it was not having to pay extra for that. Yorkshire pudding and gravy were spot on. Special mention to the red cabbage as well.

The environment is pleasant but dark. Staff friendly and helpful but unless you pay a lot for your meal money you may be disappointed. To start we had the terrine which was very nice and the marrow bone which sounded interesting but lacked too much...

my biggest disappointment. I've been to this place before and really liked it, but the first time we barely had a snack and the wine was good. but today we ordered steaks. and oh my god it was a completely dry piece of meat. I didn't have the courage to tell the waiter this because my English is not that good. This is my biggest disappointment. I will probably never return to this place again

Disappointing, after visiting The Milk Thistle several times, which is my go-to for planned chilled evening drinks, I found out that this was the same owners, so I had high expectations for this place as Milk Thistle is amazing. Unfortunately nothing wowed us, the steaks were above average, but not worth the price nor were they amazing. The atmosphere was a little too dark for an eating environment, we couldn’t really see the menu nor the food we were eating. They don’t have any draft or many bottled beers/ciders, just cans which we weren’t a fan of, I’d have rather of had a bottled Cider. The place when full gets very loud, and while I loved the atmosphere of this, sometimes you end up needing to shout to hold a conversation, so keep this in mind if booking for an occasion etc. Having been to many of the most renowned steak places in Bristol, I would sooner return to them than here. Cow & Sow and Pasture are still my go-to for steak.

The Ox, where dining underground isn't just a metaphor. Our server greeted us with a warming smile and a single cup to accompany our bottle of water. Because why dilute the exclusivity with an extra cup? The pork and pistachio terrine was the culinary jewel of the evening—a masterpiece in a basement. On the other hand, the sirloin cooked "chef's choice" was a lesson in overcommitment, toeing the line between medium-well and shoe leather. Next time, we'll specify. And the burger? So dry it practically begged for a sip from our single shared cup. All in all, an evening of highs and lows, but not one we're eager to repeat. Still, it's a story for the books—or at least for the reviews.

Had a mixed experience here. Some of the food like fries and ice cream were really good, but the Filet, both medium and rare were really chewey and didn't taste that great. The place was really loud. Small rectangular room and a generally rowdy crowd didn't help. Had to wear earplugs... While the toilet was okay enough, they really should do something about that hard to spot surprise stair. Almost made me trip! When I tried paying the machine declined my Visa credit card (Canadian). It also declined my wife's. Good thing we had a British friend to cover us. Apparently the bank said it was the merchant rejecting the card, so that was a bad surprise. Overall, wouldn't come back here again...

The steak was dry, overcooked and chewy. My partners burger had 0 flavour I will admit the Mac and cheese and the chips were very nice. As my steak was charcoal I received a new one which was just as bad and I got to hear the staff complain that I had sent it back practically shouting it across the restaurant, was given £2 off my steak because they had to redo it which was almost insulting. Would not recommend

We ate early so the atmosphere wasn't great, it meant we could hear all the staff were saying which wasn't exactly customer friendly. Shame. I'm sure when it's busy it's it's much better vibe. Toilets were horrible though which I feel brings the place down no matter what.

My first visit, with my friend and his dog.On entering the pub you immediately notice the decor, obviously needs an refurbishment or some money spent, especially on the carpets, taking this aside we were met by very friendly bar staff who accommodated us having the dog. After being seated we were served by Michelle who couldn't be more accommodating even bringing the dog a bowl of water and a bowl of scraps. The meal a Sunday Roast of beef was superb, followed by a delicious desert, the price of the roast was £9,incredible,I know everyone has standards but for the price I got over the decor, which was superseded by the quality of the food and the top class service from Michelle, she is a star and deserves a top class wage to keep her services,I hope the landlord passes on my views to management,so in all recommended if you want a good reasonable Sunday Roast. Just a quick update for the staff, nearly 400 views on my review in 3 days,it's going to be popular ,better get some more Michells quick, good luck
