The Ox is such a lovely setting, the rooms are beautiful and its got a great atmosphere. We went for sunday roast and thought it was incredible. As were the starters, pork ribs, bone marrow and scallops. 100% would go back again and try the steak or return for a roast. Definitely recommend for Bristol.

We have been coming to Bristol for the last 4 years for my partner's birthday and we found this absolute gem of a restaurant that we always visit. The food is always amazing and the whole experience will make you want to come back again and again. This year we had Olivia serving us and we could not of asked for anyone better. She was so helpful and was very knowledgeable about all the food and wine. She is an absolute credit to this restaurant. Thank you to the Ox for another incredible meal. We will definitely be back.

Everything was amazing. The food, the environment and the lovely staff. My partner said it was the best steak he’s ever had. It’s a cozy quiet place, perfect if you don’t like crowded areas. I’d recommend booking before you go as most of the tables were full when we were there.

Thank you guys for making our visit so warm and welcoming. The food was delicious. My pan fried sea bass had the best crust on any fish I’ve had! I would recommend the BBQ as my favourite starter. Please do not hesitate to consider dining here. The staff, atmosphere and service were all quality. Thank me later.

We came here last night for a joint birthday meal with some freinds at 5pm. Upon entering, we were greated and our host showed us to our booth. We didn't catch her name but she was fantastic. Very attentive and polite, and also a great laugh. The food we had was also exceptionall. We all had staters which were perfect, the meat from my ribs fell of the bone and tadyed great. Then follwed the steaks that were perfectly cooked also. The deserts were also a lovely addition to finish off what was a great meal and experience. We really hope to be back to experience this place again. My only comeplaint is, it could do with another lamp or light in the booth/room as it rather dark but nothing too bright as it is a lovely atmosphere. Thank you so much for a great night!

Visited here for a Sunday roast after seeing some online attention, booked a 4pm table due to work commitments but was not disappointed. Ordered - scallops for starters and beef roast for main with side of mac and cheese. Scallops - very well plated, looked stunning and showed off scallop in all its glory. Super soft scallop, almost buttery and melts in your mouth texture, really fresh and quality produce, it was accompanied by a few little additions which brought the dish together but did not overpower or shadow the scallops at all. Great starter! Roasts - both plates came out looking identical which I like that eye for presentation certainly shows here at the Ox! A good healthy sized plate, overall lots individual flavours here every element on the plate has been thought about and looked after, really enjoyed the greens and braised red cabbage that’s how veg should be done! Really completes a dish when veg is thought about and flavoured. Roast beef was cooked to perfection, succulent, juicy still rare but packing flavour and rested well. Solid roast potatoes too, my only gripe with those is there was only 3 :( Overall a solid roast dinner and delivers what they claim that’s for sure. Mac and cheese side - cheesey, creamy crispy top it’s everything you want from a Mac and cheese no complaints it’s a nice side dish for making the roast naughty too! Side note; gravy was nice deep flavourful with a red wine flavour present. Brings the roast together nicely! Only thing dint enjoy so much was the Yorkshire pudding, not sure if it was made in house or bought in but lacked flavour or crispiness. My only downside to the visit was the temperature to the roast, it was warm when served which realistically went cold pretty fast, the gravy was lukewarm and nothing on the roast at all was piping hot. Became a race to finish it faster than it got cold. Which is a huge shame. Overall will rate it a 8/10 based on the flavours and vibes, would be higher if a few things just a lot hotter on the plate. Would like to return.

very dimly lit, quite a noisy venue. Staff were very polite and welcoming. The Sunday roast was delicious, other than the roast potatoes which had been reheated and were a bit rubbery, rather than crispy and fluffy. We were disappointed that there was no cauliflower cheese left (at 430pm). Overall this feels like a "could be 5*" restaurant, it just needs a bit of tweaking for me.

I went to this restaurant with high hopes of a really good meal..Unfortunately it fell very short. Firstly the decoration and ambiance was nice and relaxed the table was in a good position. The waitress was quite abrupt and abrasive. The whole experience seemed about money extraction. During the initial interaction the waitress mentioned that the Melbac red was out but they could offer us the melbac gran a premium bottle for the same price of £40 instead of £56 quite a bargain!!! So we went ahead with it. Well once poured it was very very average I googled it and was shocked to see it in Sainsbury’s for £14. When you order steak and chips you really just get that. When it arrived I had a 12 inch white plate with a dry looking lump of meat in the middle. Nothing else!! I ordered medium rare. No juice or moisture. No salad or garnish just the meat and the chips came separately in a small bowl. Chips were quite tasty and crispy but the cost was £34 for the steak and £5 extra for the chips . All in all it was shockingly bad value for money. We finished our meal and then offered the dessert menu. We decided not to have any dessert and within a minute the bill was put on the table. She said she would be back shortly for payment. We still had drinks to finish and were chatting. They just wanted the table back so trying to rush us out. I must say not even wild horses would drag me down those steps to that place again. I get the feeling that they survive on one time only customers. Don’t be disappointed just give it a miss there’s plenty of other good quality restaurants in Bristol to visit.

Drinks menu excellent, cocktail was first rate and the after dinner whiskey was nice to have a good choice. Starters were delivered swiftly and ribs were tender, sweet and bitter from charring 5star! Steaks on point! Wife enjoyed the early bird rump, but was an excellent cut, I loved my ribeye, meat was very well rested and no juices running all over the plate. We arrived as a walk in and were very well received taking coats and delivering wine at exactly the right point after cocktails. Only down side although not for us, some people may find it a little dark to read the menu, we saw someone using their phone as a torch. Over all, excellent and we will be back.

First, a beautiful venue - but is dark. Welcome and service was warm and knowledgeable. My steak was cooked to perfection and the triple cooked chips tasty. Price was okay for steak and comparable to similar establishments - I do think charging for a sauce/butter is a little tight though, especially as you get so much which I assume is regularly wasted. The butter in particular was a huge quantity! Would recommend though for steak lovers and was really impressed with the cooking of it.

This is a really nice building and the inside was cosy if not a little dark for Sunday lunch. We waited longer than I hoped and although only a few other tables in the service was slow and not very focused. The website is advertising a 40% discount on food before 7pm so she we called to reserve a table they advised a table no later than 6.45pm so we could get our order in. We sat down and ordered drinks which arrived promptly. At 6.48pm I called the waiter over and asked if we could order ‘because we didn’t want to miss out on the 40% off food’. Our order was taken (on paper, so no time stamp) and we waited approximately 20 mins for starters followed by about 30 mins for the mains. All the food was great (albeit my steak was medium rare not rare) but still great none the less. We had numerous drinks and the atmosphere was lovely. Fast forward to paying the bill and there was no 40% off food. 4 people, bread and olives to start, followed by 4 steaks with sides and a few glasses of wine and the bill was £255. We didn’t make a fuss as it was a celebratory evening but be mindful that just because a discount is promoted, doesn’t mean you’ll get it!!!!

We visited the Ox in October for my partners birthday we had a great meal not one fault on a table of 6 of us and couldn’t recommend enough to friends and family. Unfortunately we visited this month and were extremely disappointed. Our friends from the midlands were staying with us and said we had just the place to take them for a good steak! Average at best, over £430 for 4 people (we did have the sharing steaks however on this particular night I wouldn’t say was worth the money) Starters were lukewarm, the steak (30oz) didn’t seem as big as last time. The service wasn’t great the waiters weren’t as attentive as the previous time, we could of easily drunk another 2 drinks each if offered. The restaurant was less than half full on arrival and upon leaving there were 3 tables (including us) left so not exactly rushed off their feet on the waiting staff-customers ratio. Mac and cheese however 10/10 my highlight of the night.

I recently visited The Ox in Bristol for the second time, and unfortunately, it was a thoroughly disappointing experience. Despite the restaurant not being busy, the service was incredibly slow. We managed to finish an entire bottle of wine before our meal even arrived, which is unacceptable given the lack of customers. When the food finally did arrive, my steak was overcooked and far from the quality I expected. For a restaurant that prides itself on its meat dishes, this was particularly disappointing. The overall service was mediocre at best, with staff showing little interest or urgency. The atmosphere was also underwhelming. Given this was my second visit and nothing had improved, I won't be returning again. There are plenty of better dining options in Bristol.

Not what it used to be. It seems like they're getting their meat from a new supplier because the steak was very average. Completely edible but like something you'd expect at a chain restaurant. It might be partly down to the cooking as the steak didn't really have much of a crust. Sides and sauces were generally decent, some not so good, like the completely unseasoned asparagus complete with inedible chewy end section left on. Service was generally good, but the guy who initially greeted us at the bar seemed extremely moody. It's a real shame because this place used to be something special.

Me and my friends came here last night and I had really high expectations as word-of-mouth about this place had been really good. It’s a great location and lovely setting inside but the food is average for what they are charging. Last night I paid £32 for a tiny fillet steak that was overcooked after asking for medium rare (no juices whatsoever). You don’t get any sides with the steak and the sides are hugely overpriced. The mains didn’t arrive until around 21:35 when our table was booked from 20:00 and they still seemed surprised when we asked to remove the service charge. I would recommend pasture or Miller and Carter for a really good steak if that’s what you’re looking for. Maybe the roast dinner is better here!

Here is the deal with the Ox. The atmosphere is great, and combined with the prices it definitely gives off a fine dining vibe; unfortunately the rest of the experience falls short. The food is pretty good, but very expensive for what it is; if you are charging £30 for a cut of meat, you better be sure that it is impeccable. As it stands, it was just "pretty good". As for the service, we were there during lunchtime, and while our server wasn't rude, they definitely weren't nice either. They seemed annoyed that we showed up (we had a reservation), and overall had an unwelcoming demeanour. They were like this to another table, so it probably wasn't us. Again, if you are charging £30 for food, maybe your servers should smile a bit, say welcome, and generally make you feel welcome? In summary, if you cannot get a reservation at Pasture, this place is "good enough".

I’ve rated “very good” based on good alone. Because it is. I went last Friday (5th April) with 6 colleagues and the food was delicious. The steak was cooked how I wanted, the chips were delicious and the leeks and greens side dish was sublime. Absolutely no quibble about the food However….the rest of it…. The prices I don’t think are justified. You HAVE to choose everything separately on the menu and I’m sorry but to charge £4.50 for an accompanying sauce or butter is daylight robbery. It should be included within the price of the steaks, which, let’s be honest, aren’t cheap at either £32 or £34 each. Then the chips. SIX POUNDS for a serving of triple cooked chips? Really? What are they fried in, liquid gold? That’s astronomical. The skin on fries were £4.50. Yes, it’s a business, yes it has to turn a profit but paying those sorts of prices when they really are just being greedy annoys me. Same for the sides. We only had leeks and greens and they were really delicious but £6 each and the dish is TINY. The lighting is what I assume meant to be “atmospheric” but in reality it’s like eating in a cave by torchlight and no I’m not joking. It’s seriously dark and needs to have more lighting to avoid eye strain when reading the menu. Overall, it’s nice food but it could be much more fairly priced and the restaurant could definitely be improved.

There is a lot of better steak for a lot less is Bristol. Sorry guys, but when you are paying what you pay, it needs to be a lot better. Presenting a plate with a steak and nothing else when sides had been ordered was a bit disappointing. The food could have been presented to impress, which when you are paying a lot. Service was shocking, waitress were rude and uninterested, tried to catch their attention lots of time - they made eye contact and then kept walking. No one checked if our food was OK and we were left waiting for ages for drinks. The only thing the service was prompt with was the bill to which they promptly added a 20% service charge. Unless this was a charge for ignoring customers I'm not sure what this was for! Food was terrible - steaks were dry, lacked flavour. The Chimchurri sauce was more oil than anything and the garlic butter was garlic margerine. I really wanted to love the Ox, it is set underground in a cosy romantic basement with rich fittings. A perfect date spot so I thought. Firstly we were seated in front of a door leading to a storage room, this door was utilised numerous times and each time it was opened we were hit with a wall of stench. The cocktails prices are eye watering, the cocktails themselves are from from anything special and were served in an uninspired glass decorated with a cardboard straw and a cherry on a stick (Wetherspoons puts in more effort on this front), the mix was also average with a tendency toward too bitter. Let me say the starting meat platter was incredible but this was followed by the biggest disappointment, the steak, cooked with a strong taste of burned meat we needed to return the dish, you would think the steak is the one thing the Ox would have nailed … honestly, so disappointing. Their home made ice cream was hit and miss. This whole let down was only offset by the incredible staff. We won’t be back. If you’re in Bristol and want a great date venue in the same vein, try Pasture in Bristol, they too charge a mint but their offering won’t leave you feeling ripped off.

Not a good experience. Starters, we both had scallops which were pretty good. Main course, I had £34 rib eye steak. Supposed to be 10oz, definitely wasn't and I very much doubt it's uncooked weight was over 6oz. I like rib eye for the fat. This had none and just wasn't very good meat. Certainly I have had better rib eye streaks from Aldi for under a tenner. The prize is only for the steak. Chips were extra. I also ordered a ceaser salad. It had no croutons and no anchovies. So it was basically lettuce with a sauce and some cheese costing £6. Glass is Melbac was good. Staff were friendly. Automatically added 12.5% to the bill, but the waiter made a point of saying it was optional. I was happy to pay that as service was good; the food however was really quite poor and certainly no where near good enough for the price they charge. I would not recommend this place to anyone nor will I be returning.

Excellently prepared high grade meat. Should be for the money though. Very swanky interior and friendly staff. Can't believe I'm saying this. But big heavy on the meat for me these days. Probably in the wrong restaurant......

Such a bad experience! Me and my partner went for Valentine’s Day as we’d heard such good reviews but it was honestly such a bad experience we’ll never go back. The service was absolutely shocking, the waitress had such an attitude, wasn’t friendly and was super uncomfortable to deal with. And they had the audacity to try and charge 12.5% for service - we swiftly made them remove it. The cocktail was so bad I had to ask if it was what I’d asked for. They have no beer on tap. The smash burger was amazing but that was about it. The Mac and cheese was so bland. We couldn’t wait to leave.

A disappointing experience for so much money! 6oz fillet steak for £32. Has inflation really affected restaurants that bad. You could still leave here feeling hungry! The steak was a little tough for a fillet. The ribs were tasty that my kids ate. Can't say I'd be rushing back here.

I was disappointed with the early-bird meal (20£pp) The presentation lacked creativity, and the frozen chips tasted bland. The sauce seemed like it came from a ready-made powder, diminishing the overall flavor. While the steak was acceptable, it was disappointingly small. The redeeming factor was the fresh juice made from actual fruits, which was a positive touch. However, the restaurant itself showed signs of neglect – old, dirty walls and a mouldy ventilation system. Adding to the disappointment, the service was unwelcoming.

Very disappointing. The beef was very poor, quite gristly and my wife’s nut roast was tasteless. The additional cauliflower cheese was overcooked, almost burnt on top and must have been sent out this way from the kitchen. For over £200 for a single course meal for 4 but including 2 bottles of house wine and 2 cokes, I find this not to a standard that I would expect but as we were with family that we had not seen for quite a period I did not complain. I assume that this is of a typical standard and therefore cannot recommend.

Lovely looking restaurant but the service was a bit slow and the food was not wow considering the price. Mac and cheese was a bit dry, the rump a bit chewy and the blue cheese butter wasn’t great. Nice cocktail menu though, and I’d try it again to see if it was an off night as I have heard good things

Disappointed. After being seated we waited 15 minutes for someone to come by, they asked for our whole order at once which is a bit tacky for what is presented as a high end restaurant. The bread was cold and dry, the steak - a bone in rib roast, while being good quality meat, was quite dry when served. The waiter took my wine glass away when there was still wine in it without asking. No one there seemed to care if we enjoyed ourselves or not. Seems to be a good establishment that is well on the decline. Would not return.

Went here because we had a £100 voucher that was a gift. Took a while to find because it's a basement or old cellar conversion with a hard to notice small set of fairly steep stairs to navigate. Where we were sat it was so dark to the point I had to use my phones torch to read the menu. Dark wooden panelling decor with low level light bulbs and not many of them. Only place I have ever been that didn't have Jack Daniels at the bar. Served by a very nice woman that was friendly and very competent. We both ordered a fillet steak (because it's advertised as a high quality steakhouse) surprised that it was very expensive and quite small but turned out to be well cooked to my liking tasty and tender, however the sides were very low quality and again very expensive. (My guess would be Supermarket frozen fries, Aunt Bessie's roast potatoes etc) normal time to wait before being given our food so my thoughts are the staff are good and doing their best to please customers, unusual and different location but too dark, way overpriced and I wouldn't recommend or go there again just because of the expense for what you actually get.

Went for an Early Bird steak before a show at The Hippodrome. Very nice steak with lots of very tasty chips (quite salty) and a selection of sauces/butters. The “artisan” bread was a bit expensive for what it was, but the fruit crumble fit dessert was lovely. Quite expensive but very nice and all in all, good value with swift service.

Overall this place unfortunately doesn't score 5 stars in my eyes, but I think 4 stars is pretty fair. I think it's a bit overpriced for what it is, especially with a lot of very good alternatives around the corner from this place. Went here with a large group, and I think the food vs. price was not really matching. Paid £34 for 10oz of Ribeye (well cooked i might add), my carbs of choice was potatoes dauphinoise and the potion was disappointingly small for the price. One on my table had a really dry piece of sirloin, that they just couldn't eat, and once we made the waiter aware, we did get it deducted on the final bill, which I thought was a really nice thing to do. Overall, I probably wouldn't come back to the Ox anytime soon I'm afraid. It's worth noting that they do have an early bird menu for £20 quid (incl. Rump, fries, wine and sauce), which I think is really nice and value for money.

Sunday roast lunch beneath Bristol’s old city streets opposite the market. Lots of turn of the century deco & hangings. Generous baked cauliflower, garnish & gravy & roasted potatoes portion drenching the roast & Yorkshire pudding. Plenty of appetisers, desserts & sides for hungrier patrons. Extensive beverage menu too. Service was crisp & nice to enjoy at a proper pub serving English fare.

Super dark inside, nice ambiance but I will say that the lack of light is a shade too much. Sirloin Steak was flavoursome but far from tender and for the price with the chips, it didn’t quite align for me. Overall a nice establishment and friendly service but let down by a couple of things that should be pretty standard for a steak joint at this price point.

Had a very enjoyable evening at The Ox with my family, the food was wonderful and the staff even more so! Our waiter Jack was very attentive and pleasant (apologies to Jack for my mum’s relentless flirting, she doesnt get out much…). Our only note was that there was a slight spillage of cheese sauce as we sat down however we were swiftly taken care of with several glasses of cremant and the very kind offer of dry cleaning and it certainly didn’t dampen our evening. Overall 10/10 will be visiting again.

The service and the mood of the place is excellent. The last few times I have been the quality of the food has been variable. The starters were great (bone marrow and Scallops). For mains, my wife had the 'Early Bird' which was a good deal; 6oz rump steak, fries, a sauce/butter and a glass of wine or soft drink all for £20. However, my steak (£34) just literally came on its own (no salad, mushroom or tomato etc.). You have to buy everything additionally: Chips £6, butters/sauces £3.50/£4.50, mushrooms £5.50... The steak was ok/good, but not amazing. The chips are not chips, they are wedges; imagine taking a large potato and cutting it into quarters - that's their chips. I'm not a fan of wedges, which isn't the restaurants fault, but had they called them what they are, I wouldn't have ordered them. I have no issue paying good money for good food when eating out, but my £34 steak quickly became a £50 meal with the additional items, and I didn't feel it was worth anywhere near that. The staff were great and the service was good, so full marks on that.

I visited Bristol for a weekend and visited many places but this one is very poorly managed (maybe consider change of whoever runs this). This 1 star goes to the management as there is a lot of things that needs to be improved in this place and has a knock off effect on everything else. Visited Sunday morning for breakfast, we made a booking for 10:30, the place was massively understaffed. Because of lack of staff, the waitresses and people making drinks were super busy and couldn’t keep up (definitely not their fault) but they couldn’t provide good customer service due to that. Our coffee drinks arrived about 20-25 mins after our food, and then I found out my coffee was not what I ordered. There was constant flow of people coming in. Bacon pancakes were good, service was slow. We finished food and then coffees arrived. My vegan waffles were pretty average but that wasn’t the issue. This place is very popular and it needs a lot more staff members - because of lack of staff, customers are not happy when mistakes happen and then obviously it affects waiters (I’m sure this place has high staff turnover, I wouldn’t want to work here). As seen on photo, my table and chair was an inch in front of the disabled toilet which I found very grim regardless if the toilet was in use or not. This table should be for one person only and not for two. None of the above is staff members fault, they are trying their best but this is the only food place in Bristol that needs heavy management changes as clearly it needs works. Sadly we will not be returning here. I highly recommend “be natural cafe” in the market hall, their breakfast was 1000% better.
