So decided to come and have some lunch right at the start when they were serving it and when we got there straight away they said that the lasagna was not available a restaurant like this to say straight away that a certain item on the menu is not available that's like thinking to yourself how I ordered something else but it wasn't nice customer service wasn't the best been going for so many years maybe they've changed chefs maybe they've done something a little bit differently but I was very unpleasant with my visit when you have been going for so many years and thinking to yourself I'll give it one more chance one more chance one more chance sometimes you think to yourself maybe chances have now come to an end

Came in today for Sunday lunch , utter rubbish . very slow service , after being seated waited 20 min for someone to take the order after us asking for it to be taken ! . Then had to ask for the starters to be cleared away after waiting ages , then asked after 25 min where the main food was ? To be told “ I’ll check , where nobody came back so I had ti get up and find out what’s going on ? A guy who I’ve no idea who ? said he’s asked someone to tell us there’s a delay where nobody came . I’ve no issue with things running behind , but tell the customer about it ? Don’t leave us sat there as customers having us asking all the time ? . I’ve been coming here over the years and it’s been lovely the food . The veg soup was like Green water , and the Sunday lunch was ok ? But very small and luke warm . If your short staffed (which you told be you were )stop taking reservations. If you can’t fulfil the customers expectations ! £120 is a lot of money for what we experience . I will never be back here again , this was my last visit . such a shame as it’s a lovely place , and really changed .

Our visit for my mother-in-law's birthday was abysmal. The food portions were small particularly for the price and the service was slow without explanation. We had to ask for our starter plates to be taken away it was that long. Then waited a very long time with us twice asking where the mains were. When the Sunday Lunches arrived, they were lacking. 2 slices of meat, 5 small potatoes, 1 little piece of cauliflower and a carrot cut in half with 3 green beans and a Yorkshire pudding for £15.50 is terrible. We will not be coming back. £120.00 wasted.

Our experience was sadly very poor. Firstly we asked for an allergen menu three times due to a severe peanut allergy. It wasn't ever brought we were told that everything was safe. The starters were brought and then told the starter she had ordered had been changed as they couldn't guarantee it didn't have peanuts. We ordered garlic bread .. asked for side plates.....never turned up. Asked for a spoon for the small child in our party twice.... Ended up going into the prep area myself to look for one. Finally fish and chips should mean fish and chips not potatoes the size of roasted potatoes thst were dry.. tasteless and not chips.. awful....oh and the high chair was broke. Not good enough!

Went on a Sunday for Sunday lunch as usually love it here however today was very different. Went as a couple and felt treated different as we were probably the youngest table there. As a table of 2, other parties around us who arrived later were able to order before and receive food before us. We had our starter which was only a garlic bread that we shared and that we really enjoyed but then had to wait 25 minutes for the plate to be cleared. I’d understand more if it was a busy day but as a ex hospitality worker no table should sit there that long with finished plates. As we were sat there we were ignored by workers as they attended to the surrounding tables and continued to be ignored. Food was average slow service but fast to bring the bill. We have both been coming to owls for years and always enjoyed it but sadly today has been enough for us not to come back.

It was my first visit in years but would willingly go again and only five minutes walk from home.

We went for a quiet family meal to celebrate a birthday. The evening was ruined by a large party with young children treating the place like their private function room. Young boys running up and down without any regard for plates of hot food being carried about or consideration for other diners. The parents did nothing, neither did the staff as the young waiters did not have the confidence or wherewithal to intervene and suggest the children behaved appropriately. In addition, we waited ages for service as the priority was clearly on the large party. We gave our feedback to the waiting staff but don't expect anything will have been said to the disruptive party as the waiters did not seem to care about the experience of other diners. We won't be back.

What a wonderful hidden gem. My family and I visited Haigh Hall today as we have done on many occasions. and wanted to eat somewhere close by. My daughter found the Owl, so glad she did. excellent food, service top notch, everyone was so friendly, and such a beautiful venue. The prices are far cheaper than I would pay in pub / restaurant around Preston and the Fylde Coast. 10 out of 10 for all of us. Thank you for a wonderful dinner.

Went in the evening and the prices have been raised . Some items are over £20 per course. I feel it is a pub with fine dining prices . There is a 2 course but this is quite expensive compared to the original prices . Not as many people in and I think this reflects on the old prices. I feel there is a huge jump . The coffee is also expensive for the size of the tiny cups . We will more than likely return as the food is good and the staff are nice and it is local, but I feel it is expensive.

Would not recommend. We were here to celebrate my mums 92nd birthday. We were put in a corner table were it was really dark , when asked could we be moved we got a sour response. Orders were taken and I ordered the Light lunch platter which was brought to me and I had to sit and eat when no one else had their food, that in itself isn't great this should have been brought to me the same time as all other meals. The waitress then brought me 2 pots of tea and stated that I'd have to pay for the extra one, but this was included in my meal, her response was sharp and not helpful and no smiles at all. Quite rude behaviour as this was also felt from the rest of the group, even my mum who is 92 said she's rude. Then she proceeded to bring me another pot of tea and I explained I'm not paying for that. Everyone received their order except for my mum who is 92 and had to wait for her order of a mere bowl of soup which we had to remind the server to bring it, then we once again had to remind the server to bring mums chips. Seriously need a system in place to avoid a simple table order and service. Not great hospitality and perhaps you need to address this as I know I will definitley not be returning. Staff need a course in how to present themselves to their paying customers.

We went here today to celebrate mums 91st birthday and all in all is was a good experience but a small criticism that we had was that my beef bourguignon was a rather small portion as was our portions of vegetables and the chips had bits of scraps of potatoes rather than a proper chip. It’s nothing that would stop us going again in the future but it’s a year since we’ve been here and there’s been a decline in the size of portions.

What has happened to this once amazing place to eat ?. We’ve been coming here for at least 25 years as a group of friends . This once bustling very reasonably priced restaurant seems to have had its identity changed . We walked in to an empty restaurant which was unusual but it is January . The offer of two courses for £17.95 was very limited but it wasn’t much more if anything , to choose what you wanted . I started with the goats cheese tart , which was very average , just a crust full of chutney with a thin layer of cheese , but it was edible . My main choice was chicken , I was disappointed with the size of the meal , a chicken breast with about 6 mini potatoes and a tiny portion of veg . The food was lovely but the teeniest portion 😢 I did mention the problems and received my starter free . My reason for this review is to hopefully let this restaurant know how much the dining experience has changed and was disappointing . It really doesn’t make me want to rush back which is sad as it’s always been a favourite

Overall the food and service was good. Just a complaint on the starters really, I ordered goats cheese tartlet and it was not nice, a tart pastry case filled with chutney to the brim with a tiny sliver of cheese on top which wasn't goats cheese, i think it might have been mozzarella. When the waitress collected our plates she didn't ask if we'd enjoyed, or comment on the virtually untouched tartlet. I was ready to give feedback but felt this was a missed opportunity, maybe I should have been more assertive! My mum had a fruit starter, melon and pineapple, there was hardly anything there. But the mains were delicious

On previous visits the food and experience here was excellent, sadly not anymore. Overall we felt that the staff wanted diners in and out as fast as possible. The food was poor to average. The prawn cocktail was mostly sauce with very little smoked salmon and tiny tasteless prawns. Very disappointing as this dish had a supplementary price. The roast beef was tough, very difficult to cut and full of gristle. There were very few vegetables on the plate, previously veg were served separately on a large dish on the table. This venue is in a lovely setting but food and service were well below expectations.

Before lockdown this was a lovely place to visit with friendly staff and great food, unfortunately the same can’t be said following the pandemic. From being shown to our seats it set the tone of the whole unsatisfactory experience. We was told when booking that a table for our family party of 8 would be seated upstairs as it was for a 50th birthday celebration. Instead we was seated downstairs on two separate tables. The waitress simply left us unattended, in that time we was debating whether to leave and look elsewhere and quite frankly I wish we had. Firstly, The drinks selection is VERY limited, that being said the waiter that came over wasn’t able to receipt much of it either. I settled on a very marked up cheap bottle of rosé that took ages to be served.Starters, the selection of starters are very basic and what you receive is quite underwhelming. But what annoyed me most was how the waiter had a face on him and came across rather rude to several people. Main, you’d expect on a limited menu that the establishment would be confident in their offerings but I received the most disappointing and rather unappealing roast, that looked like it had just been taken out of a microwave, well actually not just maybe 5 minutes later as it was not hot at all.Desert, this is the one thing I can’t really complain about, I had a great tiramisu and was a decent size portion too. Unfortunately, I don’t have any plans on returning to this once great place for a family meal. It’s a shame because it’s a lovely looking venue. I hope that changes can be made, a less bland menu with some signature dishes and a wider drinks offering as well as better trained staff would be a few steps in the right direction.

Food was very good and the presentation was excellent. Loved the creme brûlée. Staff were very friendly and felt very safe with their Covid measures. Not sure how anyone can complain about the value for money - 2 courses for £9.95 is unbelievable, in Chester you would be paying at least that for 1 course.Hope to visit again when we are next in Wigan

Arrived to a what looked to be smartly refurbished restaurant/bar in a lovely setting. We booked before hand to check of they did vegetarian/vegan options which they did and did not disappoint! Your lucky if you get 1 veggie option in most restaurants but this place had 6 main meals to choose from with at least 2 on starters and desert. We had soup/garlic mushrooms to start. Then butternut squash lasagne/ veggie stir fry for main which was amazing and a vegan chocolate cake with ice cream for desert. All faultless, really well cooked, large portions and tasted great. We had drinks after in the bar. The lady who served us there was so friendly. But had great service all round. I really can’t understand how a previous review complained about vegetarian options? Please don’t listen to this as said above was brilliant! And I should add the meals where included in the starter+main for £12.95. So great value for money as well. Just returned from The Owls at Standish. We took our 2 grandchildren for lunch and I must admit was somewhat apprehensive in dining out in these unprecedented times. We needn't have worried and were very impressed with the standards of the management and staff in adhering to safety procedures. The entrance is now via the conservatory where hand sanitizers were presented and we even had our temperatures taken on arrival. We were immediately shown to our table where the 2 metre rule was enforced, and the waiter who was wearing a face visor asked us if we required any drinks, and our 3 course meal was served promptly. The bill was delivered and paid for at the table. Our last visit to The Owls in Standish was probably about 14 years ago. At that time it was a popular haunt for families and the older generation, as it offered three course deals and other such offers for not very inspiring food. After reading that it had been refurbished during the lockdown, we thought we’d give it another go as part of the eat out to help out recovery plan. There’s no doubt about it - the beautiful building is in a gorgeous setting - and the refurb has been tastefully done. The central bar and the staircase going up to the second floor are stunning. But .... the menu left a lot to be desired. As a vegetarian, I am resigned to being presented with limited options in many ‘traditional’ restaurants - mushroom stroganoff; mushroom risotto. However, I was to be disappointed: there were no vegetarian main course options on the two courses for £12.95 menu, whilst on the a la carte my options were - sorry, was - a halloumi burger. I guess that on the plus side, it did make choosing from the menu very, very easy for me. I’m not sure what would have happened if I’d been vegan - maybe I would have been served the burger with just the roasted peppers that accompanied the slab of halloumi served on the brioche bun.The presentation of the food was also a little .... odd. The ‘salad bowl’ referred to on the menu consisted of a few leaves, a sliced cherry tomato, some deseeded cucumber, red onion and salad dressing, leaving me feeling a little underwhelmed. In conclusion, although the bar has had a refurb, it’s pretty clear that not as much thought has been out into the menu, which is a shame.

We were given a corner table next to a stifling hot radiator. You have to be a contortionist to get to your seats. In spite of the staff turning down the radiator at our request,it was way too hot to enjoy a hot meal.May I make 2 suggestions:first,do inform your customers where they will be seated at the time of the booking-so they can make an informed choice whether to go ahead or not second, a smaller 2 seater table would be more appropriate for that confined space.Food was OK though it is an experience we would not want to repeat again. And it is highly unlikely we will visit this establishment again.

So last night 4 of the distributors and team leaders from my team went for a lovely meal at the Owls. This place is perfect for business events as they have a lounge area where you can all meet up and have a pre-dinner drink before being shown to your table. The menu is varied and the prices are surprisingly inexpensive considering the quality of the food and the surroundings. The food itself was delicious. The restaurant is not too loud so it was easy for us to talk. The staff were very attentive without being intrusive and all in all, we had a fabulous evening. I would definitely go again and I would recommend this place to anyone who wants to treat their staff to a quality but inexpensive dining experience.

Ifrequent fine dining restaurants including Northcote Manor . So how does the Owls compare : I visit on Mondays and Fridays with my carers so I am glad the menu changes monthly . The 3 starters include 2 soups and we favour the potato and leek , potato and watercress and mushroom soups , they are by far the most satisfying and delicious soups anywhere . There are about 9 mains giving a wide variety of meal types . Today my carer had the vegetable wrap , a wonderful combination of vegetables in a tomato sauce wrapped in pasta . She discribed it as marvellous .My main was a most generous piece of poached salmon in an incredible seafood sauce . It was cooked to perfection , I cannot wait for my next visit on Monday .

This is a definite place to visit again. It has a warm and friendly atmosphere with lots of choice on the drinks menu from soft drinks to speciality coffees and wines and of course the cocktail menu. I am assured that the cocktail menu is well worth exploring. A place to visit on its own or pre or apre dining in the Owls restaurant. The staff are very welcoming and friendly. There is a lovely view over the lake and the 'orchard' during the day and on a good day you can sit out on the patio. If gou are a family looking for a venue for a day I would definitely this plus the restaurant or maybe just sit around relax and have drinks. The great thing for your younger family members is they have charging points and plug sockets around the bar so your IT devices will remain charged. Would stop a lot of panic attacks in many families I know. Definitely recommend. Take a look on the menus and see what they have to offer you.

My wife and I have been visiting friends in Liverpool now for about 16 years. They took us to the Owls on our very first visit a 3 course menu was £5.95 after 16 years it is still only £10.95. How they do such a lovely meal so cheap is a wonder. The venue, the staff and of course the meal is all 5 star. I wouldn't go anywhere else when we visit and that is at least once if not twice a year. All I can say is congratulations and well done to all at the Owls.

Thanks for changing the bread rolls. They were like rocks last time. Food and service OK but not as good as it was a year or so ago. We ate on the 20th December but the Christmas decorations were practically non-existent, very insignificant, not very festive. The building cries out for beautiful garlands, red and gold decorations etc etc.

We came after a long 15 years and ate off the November Special menu (£10.95 3 courses) and all 4 of us had a lovely meal. The braising steak in particular was delicious! Wasn’t sure what to expect for £10.95 but everything was perfect and as good as I remember. The staff went out of their way to check if my meal contained dairy (as I am intolerant) and modified one of the deserts to cater for my needs. Will be coming more often as I cannot rate their food high enough!

And the fruit was less and juice watery lack of taste, just wondering if its cut backs? But everything else was nice as usual, i will just pass on this sweet next time i go, as it isnt as good as it use to be(the sweet only merange fruit icecream cueli. Dont get me wrong, i still love going to the owels. Just this sweet needs to be like it use to be back two scoops of ice cream instead of one, and more fruit cueli, and not watered down, as its lost its taste.. But other than this, keep up the good workxx

My carer and I went for our first lunch in November today . I had potato and leek soup , it was superb ,the faint taste of the stock added to the authenticity of the soup . Following on had a chicken curry , this normally comes with boiled rice . Not being fond of rice I chose roast potatoes with carrots and cabbage ; did the unusual taste combination work ? Well yes principally because the curry was quite mild , as it must be in this setting .

The building is beautiful, the surroundings are stunning and that is where the positives end, but it’s so cheap and serves nasty food, you’re going to get the same calibre of people and staff with school like procedures on how you pay and how you’re treated by staff. Last night there was approx a group of 30 people all paying their bills separately, (you have to go and queue at their 1 till like in Heron foods (( well the owls have got more than 1 till but you can only pay for food at 1 till))! When the till became free, I told them I’d forgotten vital heart meds so I was glad it had become free so I could pay and leave, to which the unhelpful cashier said “I can’t take your payment yet, the till is still open to the other group and I’m waiting for the rest to come down and pay”! This other group were rude, inconsiderate, didn’t rush and we continued to wait, they didn’t even give a tip when they’d finally finished at the tuck shop likey till. By the time we finally got to pay I was so mad, yes I did swear (no one else was around) only to be told by a very patronising waiter “mind your language, especially in front of your children”, my children you idiot are bigger than me, one is an adult, age wise in the eyes of the law and the other nearly is. People wouldn’t be swearing and annoyed if your systems weren’t so poorly performing, rubbish and inconsiderate of others! I’ve never felt so patronised in my life, It was worse than being at school. We will never go again. But it’s the old cliche “you get what you pay for”, if you want awful food and awful service go here, because it’s cheap like a school dinner and that’s his you’ll be getting, a school dinner served by school dinner ladies! A beautiful building made into an Horrible place by horrible procedures and teacher like staff! If you want a nice meal I suggest you go a little further out to the likes of Cherry Tree, Lucianos, the Yew Tree and Retreat were you’ll be treated with the upmost respect!

Twice a week I go out to do my shopping with my carer , then go to a restaurant for lunch . On a whim we went to the Owls they went to great lengths to get my wheelchair to a suitable table . The menu of two courses was comprehensive and I went for the braised steak ; what arrived was a whole steak covered in a gravy sauce . Next new potatoes and fresh carrots and Savoy cabbage were presented in traditional dishes . The steak was braised to perfection , I was about to cut it with my fork . It was delicious and the sauce sublime , the vegetables were well cooked and took up the plentiful sauce . I should have said that I started the meal with the best potato and leek soup I have ever tasted . The service was excellent and price £6.95 I truly do not know how they do it . We go at least once a week and have nearly tried every dish I recommend the Owls highly . Dr. Gary Young .

We went for the mid week lunch special of 2 courses for £6.95 with extended family. It is a very busy restaurant and a bit like a large canteen at times. Service is very quick so much so that at times you can feel a little rushed. Very little seating area to relax with a pre / post meal drink. The menu changes monthly but is very similar all the time with all the favourites of the regular clientele which in the main part are the over 60s. The menu is not very imaginative but food is of good quality and well cooked. This is a value for money experience.

So today I went with the family to The Owls for my 31st birthday we have been going there for so many years and the food and the staff I've always been top-notch. But my mum noticed that other people were getting seem to before us we got there early and these people were getting put to their tables before us now I understand that apparently my parents wanted to go to the conservatory so maybe there wasn't enough spaces for us that's why we have to wait a little bit longer. We ordered our food as always lovely staff can't complain the staff that work there very very friendly especially the one that served us today very jolly bar staff. I think Mum ordered the chicken and straight away she didn't like it but she didn't want to make a fuss because it was my birthday Dad ordered the steak and he wasn't too happy about it and normally my parents always never make a fuss anyway so they they were a little bit unhappy with their food but like I said they're not people that like to complain but I knew but they were not happy about going there today.

We got to the Owl and from the outside it was nice. Inside, the decor and large wooden frame made it welcoming and gave it a lovely aged feeling. That's where the good points ended however. If you order drinks at the bar you cant pay by card. The bar men didnt know why not since they have card facilities for meal payment. When we asked if we could have a few tabs for each family that we were with we were told no and we could either put it all on the food bill or have one large drinks bill. We got given a table that didnt have enough seats at it so had to move chairs to it ourselves. Food was ordered and brought out in the most haphazard way ever. There were people in our party that had finished one course before other people had theres on the table. Same for the main courses, huge wait then nearly 25 minutes between the first dishes and last being brought out. The staff were working as hard as they could but it just felt unorganised and without leadership. When we came to ask for the bill it took forever to get it worked out. The only redeeming feature of the night was the company I was with. The venue was a sham that should be avoided at all costs.

Then when we finally got a table this whole adventure continued to spiral downhill. My “chicken” was questionable and I can honestly say I’ve had nicer microwave meals. Everything tasted the same and it was like a nursing home without the bingo. The place shuts at 3, probably so all the diners can have their afternoon nap.
