Booked a table for the breakfast sharing board for two people for this morning. Have to say it was amazing and fantastic value, however today the service let us down. We weren't asked if we wanted drinks, so I asked and was told tea/coffee wasn't included, which was fair enough, so we ordered 2 coffees, the food came and after checking online I saw it included orange juice, so had to ask for that. Great choice of food and such a lovely pub. Have been many times for afternoon tea and always received a nice welcome. I have knocked a star off today for service. We finished our food but the staff serving were sat eating breakfast, so we waited a while and no one came, so had to disturb the staff to ask them if they could box the food we hadn't managed to eat up, not a problem. Staff are lovely, however we shouldn't have to feel we are disturbing them when we need to leave.

I had a birthday voucher for afternoon tea which needed using, but as I don't eat cakes, biscuits etc. I phoned to ask if it would be possible to arrange replacements and the helpful lady I spoke to said she'd organise it with her chef. When we got there it was yet another rainy summer day which was a pity as there is a large beer garden area at the back, which would be lovely on a sunny day. The indoor area was quiet which we weren't surprised at on a rainy week day. The afternoon tea platter was delicious, it had some hot food such as mini quiche, chicken goujons, plus freshly made sandwiches, scones with jam & cream & cakes for hubby and portions of lovely fresh fruit. We both enjoyed the tasty food and would return here to eat in future.

Decent pub in Wigan, but I had a pizza for 10 quid, I do not exagerate when I say it was probably the worst I have had, burnt and pretty tasteless. Not recommended and definitely not worth 10 quid.

I say 'surprisingly' as someone I know eats here fairly regularly and has taken family members along on some occasions. The pub must be doing something right as it's still in business but a few in the vicinity have closed down. The pub has a lovely quirky interior and the bar service was speedy and efficient. Unlike the kitchen. Given that there were only a handful of people in, the meals took rather a long time to arrive, especially as it was all simple uncomplicated food. The steak strips were chewy and the chicken on the Caesar Salad had an odd consistency. We expected a member of staff to check back for our comments at some point, but to no avail. Just a little tip to the 'servers' if you can easily place a plate down on the table yourself, please DON'T lean across someone who is eating and hand a full plate to another customer to put down themselves, it's just rude and poor practice. Given the fact that it came recommended so it might have been a one off, I won't be rushing back.

What a lovely pub. Shame about the staff (not all I might add) After walking in the member of staff had started putting the glasses away, said "thankyou" to another customer after placing they're empty glass on the empty bar. They then continued to finish putting the other half away until asking what I would like to drink. I was told a very sharp "8" when asking what time they serve food until. The same member of staff then shouted across the bar, "you can sit down you know, I'll find ya" while I was enjoying my long awaited pint, After feeling socially forced into sitting down, the cutlery then arrived abruptly with zero conversation and an unanswered Thank-you from this side of the table. Thankfully thats the last time i had the displeasure of interacting with this person. The food on the other hand was fantastic and would come back on the building and food alone. The travel magazine I work for will be very glad to hear my thoughts. As will the international clients i have visiting my well established engineering company around the corner. As a lovely fare well i recieved a corner eyed glance as I finished my meal. For once I preffered it to the classics, "is everything OK?" "How's your food?" And "can I get you anything else" Instead of dessert I opted for walking out to a very hasty "was that nice?" YES, the food was superb 👌

After not going into this place since it changed hands ages ago I took my partner in one day to enquire about gluten free food being available. They were in the middle of being refurbished and they said when it was done they would have the biggest working kitchen in Wigan. Also that they would have an EXTENSIVE GLUTEN FREE MENU. So we waited... And not long ago after being gifted Christmas money I suggested going to sample the food there. I rang up, talked to a lady who verified that what I had been told about having a decent number of gluten free options was true and to come in to try. We were informed when asking the staff about these options upon arrival there were tons and all clearly marked out on the menu... After sitting down with our drinks we discovered this was TOTALLY UNTRUE. I asked again if they had a separate menu for this as the only thing labelled was VEGAN and VEGETARIAN options and they apologised saying that one of the staff would show me the dishes (that were not marked on anything as she ate gluten free as a preference) and there were TWO MAIN MEAL OPTIONS. Possibly two starters as I recall. The starter was good, the main which consisted of steak and homemade chips was rather bland. I didn't finish it. My partner had the Beer Macaroni with "Cornbread" and was also very disappointed... It was like cake in texture I could see it myself (he said it was sweet and cake like in taste too) and was covered in garlic (this wasn't I don't think stated on the menu nor usually part of Cornbread in general)... I was willing to give it a try even though the information given about the vast gluten free menu was not at all true and looked to be confused with vegan/vegetarian food hoping that the food would be good but it really isn't anything great. I was gutted to have used my money on this as other great restaurants in town that always deliver great quality and many options for me were all open at this point and I wish I hadn't been totally misinformed into going to the Oak. In future I will go in for the odd drink but not for food. Nor would I recommend the quality of it... PLEASE, for goodness sake train the staff in the difference between gluten free and vegan food options as you really could ruin someone's night out and waste their time and money. Such a shame as I have through many many years gone here for gatherings and social occasions. Hope someone finds this helpful.

The Royal Oak are offering takeaway afternoon tea while everywhere is shut during lockdown. You ring up and place your order, pay over the phone and then on the day park up outside, open your boot, they bring it out and put it in your boot and off you. The actual food was really nice, all tasted fresh and the cakes were really yummy. My 2 favourites were the chocolate brownie and cheesecake. Oh and the bottle of prosecco! Thanks a lot for helping to make my mum's birthday a bit more special in lockdown.

Opted for breakfast to cure the late night before. Full English £8.95. Wow...a decent sized plate of top breakfast nosh. Double fried eggs, bacon, sausage, black pudding, beans...all the works. The image doesn’t give the size any justice so for value, we were very happy and didn’t quite manage to finish it.The only criticism was our table was quite sticky, but easily fixed - perhaps disposable table cloths for dining customers could be implemented and would look nicer too.Would definitely return if we were in the vicinity again.

Visited for the first time with a friend. We walked in and there were 4 members of staff (inc manager) stood behind the bar having a chat, they didn't even acknowledge we had walked in. We got our own menus and sat down. We sat in the beer garden, which is absolutely lovely! Really clean and a nice place to sit in. We both ordered the steak sandwich with a side of chips, now I do have to say for my food and my drink it was only £11, so I wasn't expecting the food to be amazing at this price. The bread was nice but the sandwich was impossible to eat. It was literally a piece of steak in between of two slices of bread. And the steak was quite tough. The tortilla chips that come with it were all in tiny pieces, as if I had just been given the last of the bag. The chips were brown and hollow in the middle. They do have a impressive drinks selection and the atmosphere is great for having a drink with your mates! But I would go back for food.

Before I start, I visited here shortly after it reopened and the food was good. I couldn't say the same for my second visit on 14 February. The pub was virtually empty so no excuse for what happened next. My partner and I called for a Valentine's Day drink and a snack. Not being particularly hungry I ordered a portion of chunky chips. They were dark brown, soaking in oil but hard inside. My partner had nachos - microwaved so they were impossible to eat, cheese stuck to the bottom of the plate and a dollop of salsa. I wanted to send it back but my other half didn't want to cause a fuss. On a positive note, the staff are friendly and welcoming, particularly the young Scottish barmaid. I think they need a new chef though! I won't be eating here again - pity.

This newly refurbished venue has a great pub environment and I recommend it highly for drinks with family or friends. Lovely outside beer garden for summertime too! Having visited a few times since re-opening, decided to try the food last Saturday (late afternoon). After placing order at bar, the waitress inexplicably walked off? A supervisor spotted and kindly resolved matter whilst addressing her action with her discreetly. Service is obviously important to the management which leaves patrons feeling good about the place. Told food would take 20 mins - starters took more than double that but what set the 'tone' for the meal was the way the waitress flung down our starter - no cutlery, no napkin, no condiments - we had to go in search of those ourselves. At £7.50 for a small starter portion of rubberised calamari can't really recommend it as good value for money. I did let the supervisor know when he collected our plates that it had been a bit rubbery but didn't mention the poor waiting service. When our mains arrived they were modestly portioned. The steak pasta was delicious but very small portion for a male and at £9.95 seemed a £1-2 too expensive for what it was. The chicken burger had the smallest fillet of chicken I have ever seen - it was a slither of a normal breast and had a soggy bottom with mayo so needed to be eaten with a knife and fork (which I would have done anyway! :-) ) and it was missing the cheese chilli mentioned on menu. The fish and chips was fine, again quite a small portion, and arrived with mushy peas rather than the ordered garden peas. They kindly exchanged but peas arrived in a boiling metal camp cup, still swimming in hot water and presented to our 6 yr old - not child friendly. Not an extensive menu so disappointing that nothing really stood out as great - poor waiting service left us with an overall disappointing impression. That being said, the supervisor who had asked us about our starter came back after our mains served to check everything ok and we said it was fine - again demonstrating customer care. I think they really need to lift their quality and presentation a bit to match pricing or reduce cost £1-2 per plate to for people to feel good value for money. Hopefully the menu, kitchen and waiting staff will get better the longer it is open. For time being, we wouldn't eat there again but definitely a nice venue to have a drink in.

Well if you call old battered steel chairs that are so uncomfortable,I would rather be old fashioned. Now on to the food, first of all it only a small selection of food, not to everybody's taste but we all eventually found something to suffice. When our food came,we were all shocked at how small the portion sizes were considering how expensive it was. It was a shame as it tasted ok.
