A great pub and a shout out to Nicola who was friendly and efficient, helping me sort the preorder for all 16 of us who ate there. We all enjoyed our food, thankful of a place to dry off - it was a wet day in the Lakes! - and appreciated you being able to accommodate such a large group of us. Would definitely recommend and will be bcak when we are next in the area

A spontaneous find that exceeded our expectations. The Outgate Inn is a characterful and welcoming pub with a broad menu choice and probably the best vegan pizza I've had in years. Friendly staff, value for money and toe-tapping background music made this a pleasant and worthwhile visit.

After a long walk in the hills getting very tired legs we needed a great traditional local to recover in that evening. Thankfully we found it, and only 30m from our Airbnb. Just as well it was that close as we couldn’t have walked any further.

Stopped in for a swift pint after a good long walk and ended up grabbing a bite to eat. We were seriously impressed by the quality of the food, which was clearly homemade, fresh, and delicious. The service was friendly and polite and the ambience, aided by a log fire, was inviting. We had not expected to be able to grab food as good as this ad hoc and on a whim; this was a delightful surprise.

We called here after a decent walk, we were staying in Hawkshead, about a mile down the road. We loved this pub. The minute we walked in we were made to feel very welcome. The food was delicious and decently priced. They have a wide selection of beers. IPA’s and other drinks. The staff can’t do enough for you, and was busy every day we were there with locals and visitors to the area. We made it our local for the time we were there and can’t wait to return. Already looking for somewhere to stay.

We visited the Outgate Inn in Ambleside twice this week during our holiday with the kids, and we couldn't have been happier with the experience. The food is fantastic—especially the homemade burgers and wood-fired pizzas, which were a hit with the whole family. We were lucky enough to try the homemade chicken and leek pie as well, and it was delicious. Highly recommended! The beer is clearly well looked after, and the atmosphere is lovely and cozy, particularly with the log burner adding to the warmth. The staff are incredibly friendly and welcoming, making us feel right at home. There’s plenty to keep the kids entertained, from dominoes to activity sheets, and even treats for our four-legged friends! The locals are equally welcoming, and it was nice to chat with them about life in the area. All in all, we had such a wonderful time here and can’t wait to visit again. Wishing you all the best!

If you’re staying in Outgate or just passing call in and support your local. It was great to see the Outgate open again after a short break. The food is really good, the Sunday lunch was really ‘home cooked’ and if you’re have the lunch you must have the cauliflower cheese. Wednesday is burger night and the chicken burgers are excellent. The chef does some wonderful specials but if you just fancy really good pub food the pie, the sausages and the fish and chips can’t be beaten. Really attentive and friendly service rounds it all off.

We have a holiday home in Hawkshead and visit often though with may pubs and restaurants in the Lakes suffering from shortages of staff as a result of Covid/Brexit, it can be hard finding a place to eat at short notice. Alex however, always does his best to accommodate us and gives a very warm welcome. The food is hearty pub grub style with the occasional Asian dish added to the menu too. Home made pizzas are good and the kids portions are generous. There is a big garden at the back with bands often playing.

We arrived here after an extremely wet walk round Tarn Hows, to find a fire welcoming us. We had great service from friendly staff, the beer and wine were excellent and the toasted paninis with fries were spot on. Perfect Lakeland pub!

A Brilliant Evening at Source at the Gilpin We’ve been lucky enough to visit a number of Michelin-starred restaurants over the years, and Source at the Gilpin really stood out. From the food to the service to the atmosphere—it was a joy from start to finish. We were looked after so well by Elle, who was warm, friendly and really thoughtful throughout the evening. And Francisco, the sommelier, was excellent—full of knowledge and passion as he talked us through each wine pairing. Every glass felt carefully chosen, and each one brought something new to the food. To start, I had the Cornish Lobster. It was rich, perfectly cooked, and beautifully balanced with the peanut bisque and roe sabayon. Then came the Cornish John Dory, served with golden caviar. This was a highlight—delicate and luxurious, and plated with real care. It was great to meet the section chef who made it. You could tell how much pride went into the dish. For dessert, I chose the Gariguette Strawberry with Pink Peppercorn. Light, fresh, and just the right touch of sweetness to end the meal. The petit fours were also a treat—playful and full of flavour. We were invited into the kitchen afterwards, which was a lovely touch. Meeting the chefs and seeing where the magic happens made the evening even more special. Everyone was kind and clearly passionate about what they do. The only thing we noticed was that the pacing of the courses felt a bit quick at first. But as soon as we mentioned it, the team adjusted and slowed things down, which we really appreciated. It didn’t take away from the evening at all—in fact, it showed how attentive and flexible they were. All in all, a wonderful experience. Delicious food, thoughtful service, and a really memorable night. We’d happily return.

Cold and smelled of dogs on arrival. Waited ages to be served and the waitress was more interested on who was at the bar rather than taking our table order for 10 people. Food was very salty and the steak pie in particular was terrible. Every meal as standard/basic or frozen style food. The whole place is run down and miserable. We went off trip advisor reviews as well on a visit to the area and wished we hadn’t. Go to The Pheasant Inn down the road at Allithwaite instead that was lovely food and fab service.

After a long walk, (you know when your legs are like jelly and you're a bit delirious), the Three Hares Cafe was a caramel-packed safehaven. I've visited hundreds of cafes (and reviewed a fair few on here) and the negative reviews are a little baffling. Yes, the scones look burnt but they are airy light and a welcome companion to a brew. Funnily enough, they probably know how to make a decent scone given the expertise across the road at the Black Bull Inn. It is a small cafe, only a few tables, that doubtless gets filled quickly but Sedbergh has alternatives nearby if you're stuck. They nailed my preference for a caramel slice (90% oozing caramel) and the pies and other bits we took home all hit the spot. Special mention for their donuts. They look like giant charred cannon balls that ooze jam. Glorious when warmed up.
