An unexpected find, tucked away in the village. Excellent value food & drink. Quirky interior with posh toilets & friendly owner. Will be back.

The Outfitters is tucked away in Brough just off the A66 and is well worth a detour if you're heading along that road. We met up for lunch and a catch up with my cousin and it was excellent. Simple menu choices but everything we had was absolutely delicious. Beautiful tartiflette, delightful creamy garlic mushrooms both served with lovely crusty bread, and I chose a burger (home made, excellent) with Stilton and mushrooms, served with fries and a lovely fresh salad. Service from Daniel, front of house, was very friendly and efficient and he was more than happy to chat about the history of the building and the numerous theme nights on offer. The decor is quirky and eclectic and there is a lovely welcoming vibe about the place. Oh, almost forgot...we were unable to resist the rice pud for afters - wonderfully creamy and delicious, served with a dollop of home made jam. Perfection. This is an absolute gem of a place. Very highly recommended and we will definitely be back for more.

Came upon this small venue by accident. Interesting and quirky decorations. Very helpful and friendly staff. We did not expect much from a small place, but everything on the menu had a twist to it, and it was hard to choose. Our food was delicious, as were the hot drinks. Their bar offered a great variety of alcoholic beverages. We really enjoyed our short break here and are happy to recommend it.

We booked another place in Kirby Stephen, we walked in and left. Luckily we stumbled across the outfitters! Thank God we did Welcoming from opening the door. The staff were lovely and talked away. The food was all homemade and gorgeous. Will come back on our next holiday.

What a brilliant little find - stumbled upon it en route to the lakes. It was 9pm so although the kitchen was closed we had some delicious hot tapas ( homemade) and lovely wine and we were made to feel so welcome by the host … want to say Daniel? Gorgeously decorated welcoming little haven … bob in! It will make your heart happy.

Pulled off the A66 into Brough en route from Keswick to York and 2 mins into the village found the Outfitters cafe bar. Received a really warm welcome from the owner and the locals created a really friendly atmosphere. There was a great menu of home cooked food and it was hard to choose. I had a jacket potato with coronation chicken and salad which was really delicious; my friend had creamy garlic mushrooms with crusty baguette which was equally good. Brilliant service and top quality food just 2 minutes from the main A66 I would highly recommend this place if you’re driving across the country between the M6 and A1 and want good food at extremely reasonable prices. Brilliant!

This is one of my favourite places to stop if I want a break driving across the A66. On this occasion I just had a coffee and biscuit, but I've previously eaten here and enjoyed it. The owner is always very friendly. So much nicer than stopping in a coffee chain or service station.

Was on a very long road trip and desperately needed to use a toilet. Unfortunately, there were not any service stations nearby at the time. Found The Outfitters cafe bar on Google maps with a very high rating, so we thought we’d stop to use the toilet and also purchase a coffee so that it was not to be rude to just use their facilities and not be a paying customer. Unfortunately, the staff member who served me at the bar seemed quite abrupt and rude when I asked if they had oat milk. As they didn’t, I just purchased one regular coffee for myself, as my partner cannot drink regular milk. With that done, we then used the toilet. Within that time, the same member of staff must have passed us two or three times (as I or my partner waited outside the toilet whilst the other used it) and told us that there were public toilets just outside the establishment. I thought that this was quite rude and felt very unwelcoming since we were in fact paying customers. If we happen to be passing through again, I don’t think that I would consider stopping by if we wanted to have a meal or more drinks.

Needed a break from a long journey and steadfastly refuse to use service stations. Drove into Borough on the off chance there would be a cafe that could serve us a light lunch. This is an unassuming place from the road but has an intriguing name so in we went. Fantastic, eclectic, interesting decor and lots of locals inside having lunch and a drink (licensed). Immediately made to feel at home and the food was extraordinarily good. Garlic and cream mushrooms and tartiflette were nigh on perfect. I would heartily recommend this place for the food and the welcome. We would seriously like to pop in for the evening too but it’s a long way from Harrogate.

Amazing baked goods can especially recommend the traditional pasty. It was that good I returned today to test another one 10/10. The cakes also taste better than they look and they look really good anyway. Sorry no pictures as I had eaten it all, every last crumb. 😃

So glad we stopped here for lunch mid-walk. The sandwiches - smoked salmon and cucumber on one and tuna mayo salad on the other were really good. Fresh proper brown bread too. Very good service from friendly staff. Highly recommended

This was honestly one of the best meals we have ever had! We have eaten at several Michelin star restaurants over the years including 3 star ones and 1863 restaurant is equally as good if not better! We could not fault any of the dishes we ate and they were both beautifully presented and delicious! The waitresses were so attentive and friendly and made the whole experience perfect. We were celebrating our 15th wedding anniversary and we will remember this meal for a long time…..thank you so much!

The village pub The Highland Drove was once used by drovers who watered their cattle at The Dub, just outside the village. It dates to the mid-1700s and offers bedrooms, a varied and seasonal menu based on local produce and an excellent location for exploring the Eden Valley and Lake District Fantastic range of beers, friendly staff, dog friendly, beer garden and roadside parking make it an ideal pub to visit.
