Family get together, good choice of Chinese cuisine. Service good, and prompt, staff friendly and accommodating.

Nothing wrong with vegan food, I just can't get behind a restaurant that lies about their food in order to sell more of it. Who knows where they draw the line.. Hopefully before health standards 😬

I can’t speak highly enough of this restaurant. The food is simply wonderful and the staff and service are first class. Two of my friends eat meat and yet they couldn’t stop talking about the flavours and texture of the food. They now look at vegan cuisine in a totally light and I will most certainly be returning. I can’t recommend Orchid Vegan restaurant highly enough. Book yourselves a table now!!!

This has been my favourite restaurant and takeaway anywhere for quite a few years. Several of those were before I even went vegan. It's an absolute treat every single time. My wife and I always recommend it to others. And when we have guests, we go there/order in. Either way, the service has always been top.

I had the pleasure of dining at one of the finest vegan restaurants I've encountered since adopting a vegan lifestyle two years ago. Every dish I tried was delicious, with some menu items so convincingly tasty that I couldn't believe they were vegan—particularly the "duck" pancakes, which were a standout. Moreover, the staff were incredibly courteous and accommodating, enhancing the overall dining experience. Leaving the restaurant, I was not only thoroughly satisfied but also pleasantly surprised by how full and content I felt. Should I find myself in the area again, a return visit to this establishment will undoubtedly be on my agenda.

If I could give it 6 stars I would! My girlfriend and I enjoyed two starters and two mains between us and all of it was absolutely unreal. The waiting staff were brilliant - so helpful and attentive. A must visit if you don't eat meat and love asian fusion. We're just hoping that they open a branch in Newcastle!

I want to preface this review by saying the service and staff were impeccable. The atmosphere was warm and appropriate for a romantic dinner or family celebration. It was very exciting being at a vegan restaurant where I could order anything on the menu! However, both my husband and I were extremely disappointed by the food. We had the Mongolian Beef and Stir Fry in Spicy Szechuan Sauce. Given reviews, service and atmosphere, we were expecting something different than what we got. Maybe that's our own fault for setting expectations high, but it tasted like a vegan version of something you could get at any westernized Chinese take out restaurant. We are from the West Coast of the US, so perhaps we just expected something different than what is standard in the UK. We probably should have adjusted our expectations when they didn't ask us how spicy we wanted our food or give us chopsticks. Still, the sauce wasn't just uninspired, it was downright bland. I'm thankful to have an asian vegan restaurant, but I'd prefer fewer vegan options at a restaurant with more authentic flavor.

Brilliant vegan food and at a great price. We had a tough time choosing our food and everything coming out of the kitchen looked and smelled brilliant. Service was quick and the staff were friendly. The location makes it very easy to get to. Highly recommend if you want some vegan food. Recommend booking ahead as they were full and it was mid week

I've been vegan for 9 years now, this by far has been the best vegan restaurant I've been too in a long time. Not only was the food fantastic, the staff were super friendly and the atmosphere was lovely and relaxing. Would absolutely recommend the vegan duck pancakes for starters, really hit the spot. It's nice to have such a range of options to choose from, will be recommending everyone to come here and hopefully we can come back soon ourselves.

Amazing vegan restaurant! The best Asian oriental vegan food we've ever had! The restaurant was lovely, simple and understated, the staff were lovely, friendly and efficient, the food was delicious - the vegan beef and prawns tasted as good as the real thing! They also did proper vegan desserts, something we struggle with at other restaurants, and they were yummy too. This is a must for vegans in and around York and we will definitely visit again - gutted it isn't closer to where we live!

Absolutely fantastic and delicious food, me and my boyfriend went here for my birthday and it was one of the best meals I have ever had! If not THE best. I had the crispy beef in ok sauce and my boyfriend had the chicken in sweet chilli sauce. They were both delicious! We also had the duck pancakes, noodles and salt and pepper chips. My boyfriend who is a meat eater actually said the taste was better than real meat. The texture and the flavour were both extremely appetising. Sometimes with vegan food the texture can be a bit odd but this was not the case whatsoever. All the food was seasoned extremely well and you can tell they were made with care. The atmosphere and lighting was very calm and intimate. In total it cost us £57, it was very very worth it and tasted better than any other restaurant I have been to. I would definitely recommend this place not only for vegan/vegetarians but meat eaters too!! If I could give more than 5 stars I would, we will be coming back again!

Fantastic place - beautifully decorated and a good size, with tables comfortably apart which I appreciate. The staff are polite, friendly and swift to act. The food came incredibly fast, was just the right temperature and was absolutely delicious! Just the right portion sizes, so please treat yourself to a starter and dessert as well. Their desserts were absolutely outstanding, the high point of a brilliant meal - can't recommend them highly enough. Perfectly reasonably priced, a wonderful experience all round. About all I can suggest is - please introduce even more options! Can't wait to see what else you can create!

I cannot tell you how excellent the food was here. Even my non-vegan Auntie loved it!! Service was second to none. Staff are so hard working & really take care of their customers with a big smile. Highly recommend you eat here!

A superb meal for us and two little kids. It was lovely to have full access to a menu and a wide variety of delicious dishes. Staff were welcoming and helpful with the kids and supportive of more unusual requests they had! There was a chilled out vibe which was nice.

Not normally a vegan diner but we all had really nice meals. The staff were lovely and made it a lovely experience. Definitely would recommend without hesitation.

Well let's start with negatives for a change - um - 5 minutes later - NOTHING! POSITIVES then? Food - Fab-u-lous! Value - Exceptional Ambiance - Relaxing and warm (on a very cold evening) quiet background music. Service - Attentive without being intrusive Staff - Patient, as there was so much choice, the waiter came over 3 times but we didn't feel rushed at all. We couldn't decide! I can't believe we are York born and bred and never heard of The Orchid. I was given a voucher for my birthday. Philosophy - As vegetarians, we often have little to no choice when out with our meat eating friends. Just recently out of two vegetarian choices in another establishment, my favoured option was not available, so I had the curry which is my least favourite food of all. I pushed it around the plate. Vegetarians and meat eaters, please go and try The Orchid for yourselves, you won't be disappointed. We will definitely return.

We visited The Orchid mid-week during a trip to York. Fully vegan Chinese restaurant offering a good sized menu. We had shredded crispy vegan beef in OK sauce, and Mongolian vegan beef, both were delicious. Would highly recommend.

The worst experience ever. Ordered 2 dishes one a stir fry and a vegan mongolia beef dish with salt and pepper fries. The good literally came out within 5 mins stone cold. After complaining they took it back and said it would be remade. No apology. The same food came back out within a few minutes still stone cold. A stir fry should be sizzling hot. No way was this food ever freshly made. They were more concerned that the couple who had just come in would overhear us saying it was still cold. They couldnt have cared any less. Awful place with worse food and staff. Such a shame as we had high hopes as pure vegan places are not easy to find

AMAZING! Incredible Chinese food, and all vegan. It's so relaxing to look at a menu and know you can order any of it. We shared four mains, and they were all seriously brilliant, the flavours are what you would hope from good Chinese food, and the meat substitutes are first class. Really enjoyed our meal here. It was nice and busy too, and the staff are lovely.

I ordered takeout. This was my first experience of The Orchid and I was very excited. The bao bun I had was okay, and the sauce on the General Tso's chick'n was good, but you can imagine my dismay when I found a bug in my food. :( I won't rule out this restaurant, but if I go in person or order takeout again, I'll unfortunately be looking for anything that may have unexpectedly made it's way into my meal.

Incredible vegan food and super friendly and helpful staff. If you're a meat eater, then you're also in luck, as you can hardly tell that it isn't meat. Would 100% recommend to anyone looking for amazing food in York!

We walked in & we're treated well from start to finish with two children 6 & 8. We have a few dishes & sides to share, drinks & dessert. The water was refilled continuously, staff were very attentive &kind to the kids, plates were cleared nicely. The food was very good and well portioned. The desserts were a bit more typical British but nice anyway. I saw several lone diners, one with a suitcase so I guess it's a pleasant place for vegans or people travelling solo. It was close to our accommodation so we were extra pleased. We had a really nice time & we were to ask which dishes were appropriate for children (non spicy). The waitresses were both lovely & customer service was extremely good. It was warm & cosy with a pleasant for (freezing windy outside).

Fantastic experience at The Orchid. Food was excellent- well cooked, and tasted unreal. Special fried rice was a particular favourite. I’m vegetarian but came with two meat eaters, both absolutely loved the food. The service was exceptional, the wait staff couldn’t be more accommodating. Overall a very enjoyable meal, will definitely return!

Found a hair in the duck. Deducted off bill but still difficult to ignore. Service was good! Surprised meat substitutes were so disappointing after reading reviews - they all looked good but tasted the same, reconstituted and textures were wrong. Afraid we won't be trying vegan again.

Quite shocking compared to the review thought it was going to have good food but turned out to be of disappointment would not recommend and with the greatest of respects to the staff we found a hidden hair which was barely even considered with thought. Hopefully everyone else can have a nicer meal as we felt it was not of it’s expectations .

An excellent Asian vegan restaurant. The food is delicious and the service is excellent. The menu isn't as extensive as some Asian restaurants but the choice is still very good. I'll just add that I'm not a vegan but would eat here again. Definitely recommended

I had high hopes for my visit to The Orchid given its reputation as a vegan Asian Fusion restaurant. Unfortunately, my experience left much to be desired. The first thing that struck me was the excessive oiliness of every dish. It was as if the food had taken a dip in a deep fryer before reaching my plate. Not only did this detract from the overall taste, but it also left me feeling uncomfortably heavy and greasy. Furthermore, the overuse of batter on each dish was truly excessive. It seemed like the kitchen was trying to compensate for something, as if the lack of flavor needed to be masked by an overwhelming amount of batter. This not only made the dishes feel unnecessarily heavy, but it also overshadowed any potential taste the ingredients might have had. To add to the disappointment, the flavors were disappointingly bland. I was expecting a vibrant explosion of tastes, given the restaurant's claim to offer Chinese cuisine. Unfortunately, every dish fell flat, lacking the depth and complexity that one would expect from a quality Chinese restaurant. Overall, my experience was far from satisfactory. The excessive oiliness, heavy battering, and lack of flavor in the dishes left me with a feeling of regret for choosing this establishment. I would hesitate to return or recommend this restaurant to others seeking a satisfying vegan Chinese dining experience.

An absolute gem! No wonder it was packed. We visited for Restaurant Week so had an awesome deal but regular prices are still very reasonable considering the quality of food. Service was very attentive. Would definitely be visiting again.

don’t forget to order rice or noodles with your main. it makes it more expensive when restaurants do this but overall positive.

Disappointing food. For a vegan restaurant I would expect far more vegetables! Most dishes with meat/fish replacements were covered in thick batter, in the case of the dish I had (stir fry special) it was also overcooked and hard to eat. It seems as if it's trying to disguise the ingredients rather than celebrate them. The only veg in the stir fry was a couple of slices of carrot and some onions, I would have liked far more vegetables. The belly pork starter was quite tasty due to the chilli and the salt and pepper chips were ok, but the mushroom toast was a bit flavourless and could have done with some seasoning. Overall this was a disappointing experience compared to other vegan restaurants I've been to. The restaurant did take the overcooked dish off the bill and the staff were pleasant enough but unfortunately I wouldn't go back for the food.

Excellent restaurant. I'm not a vegan but I enjoy good food and this was quality food nicely presented by friendly staff. That it is vegan is a bonus.

My favourite restaurant, to eat in or take out. The staff are a delight, the food is perfect every time, there’s some wizardry going on in that kitchen. I must have spent a few hundred here over the last few years and I don’t regret it for a second.

Summary - excellent vegan food, good service and a decent location. No nuts either! Food is really good even for non vegans. My partner is a vegan even though I eat meat so we frequent quite a few vegan restaurants and this is one of the best. The menu is good (Thai / Chinese based) and the food is really good and tasty. It’s reasonably priced and easy to find in the centre of York. Very recommended.

As a confirmed carnivore I never thought I would say "vegan Chinese food is delicious". We had an amazing meal from the Orchid. Online ordering was easy with delivery both prompt and friendly. We started with mushroom toast and bao buns both were tasty and came in generous portions. For mains we shared sweet & sour battered tofu, smoked sausage with broccoli stir fry, black bean & green pepper vegan beef and Singapore style fried rice. The presentation was beautiful and the level of taste exquisite. Initially we were wary of ordering vegan pork or beef etc as we wanted to try vegan food in it's own right. We shouldn't have worried. A fantastic meal FIVE STARS

I had really high expectations for this restaurant so left quite disappointed when the food didn’t meet them. The mock meats were nice and I enjoyed the flavours but the side dishes brought the meal down. The fried rice was dry and really hard and the noodles were chewy. We’d also ordered the duck pancakes and found the cucumber and spring onion really dry. I think they’d pre sliced them for the dinner service so they didn’t taste fresh. All in all I wouldn’t hurry back. The staff were lovely though so can’t fault that.

A fantastic vegan Restaurant in York, the salt and chilli tofu, noodles and chicken curry were some of the best I have had, we also has Genral TSO tofu and the fried mushroom rice they weren't for us but that was down to personal taste, will be visiting next time we are in York.

Omg. My husband and I are fully fledged meat eaters but decided to try The Orchid after reading some reviews. Wow we are so glad we did. The meat supplements are the best we have ever tried and couldn't tell there was no actual meat. We will definitely go again when in York.

We had an amazing meal at this vegan restaurant. The food was Asian fusion/Chinese. The staff were very friendly. The food was hot and the whole menu was vegan which my non vegan husband said was really tasty and he couldn’t tell the difference with the mock chicken and duck as it was so like the real thing! We had starters and a main course and had to ask for a rake home box as it was too good to waste. Was well worth the visit and one of the best vegan restaurants I’ve been to. I would highly recommend this restaurant.

Wow! Super impressed with the dishes we ordered and couldn't believe our eyes when we saw the menu, it felt great to look at everything and know it's 100% vegan! They did some fantastic gluten free options too so no one in our group felt left out:)

Me and my family come here every time we go to York. The food is amazing (especially the sweet and sour king prawns), I can’t recommend it highly enough.

This restaurant did a really good job of capturing the best parts of westernised dishes and delivering a tasty vegan experience. The menu had a broad range of choices that would justify several visits. The Char Siu and Sweet and Sour were very satisfying but everything looked appealing. The staff were very attentive and it was evident that the restaurant is committed to their vegan vision. A really nice meal overall. The lighting was a bit dim and orange so photos will come out a bit dull.

Everything was amazing. We ordered different kind of dish each but everything was fantastic, honestly. And the hospitality was amazing as well. It’s been a year since I became a vegan but I never found some thing like this place. I’ve seen lots of vegan sushi but it’s not really authentic but the sushi we had here was almost tastes like sushi it’s unbelievable. Thank you for lovely dish and hospitality. I definitely wanna come back again.

We were excited to find a vegan restaurant with five star reviews. We’ve only given it four because many of the items on the menu were vegan chicken, vegan prawn etc. Why oh why would anyone want their vegan food processed to make it look and taste like the food they choose not to eat? We did manage, by ordering the one thing on the main menu that didn’t have fake meat or fish, plus rice, vegetable side dishes and a couple of starters served with the main course, to concoct a vegan feast so it was ok in the end.

Wow! This is the tastiest Vegan restaurant I have ever been to. A massive menu to choose from. We were going to have a 2 course but only managed the 1. Book in advance to not disappoint.

Went in on a rainy Wednesday after booking at random. The food was all delicious, I can recommend the Tom Ka soup. The staff were lovely. Considering it was mid week and miserable weather outside, when left they were fully booked.

Any carnivores out there. If there are places like these, I'm sure you guys will quit meat! Absolutely extra-ordinary Asian food. One of the reasons behind why York is a foodie city.

Although we are not Vegan, we are no strangers to this cuisine having prepared many dishes for my son who has been Vegan for more than 30 years. We had not encountered a Chinese Vegan restaurant before and were keen to see if in our opinion it lived up to the reviews we had read. It most certainly did! All the dishes we ordered had great flavour and texture and we're beautifully presented too!

Service was ok, as starters we had Tom yum soup, which I normally adore, but this one was quite different- not clear broth but cloudy, also not particularly spicy. Other starter was sweetcorn soup, not particularly tasty and very gloopy. This also was the case...
