Upon our search for interesting halal places to eat during our stay in York, we soon came to realise that our options were so limited. Which is quite unfortunate. However, this Korean BBQ place looked so tempting and i’ve always wanted to try it so we tried our luck and called up. The owner was so lovely on the phone and said they didn’t normally serve halal meat however if we booked a table for the following night they would personally go and get some for us!! How lovely!? Who does that? So we explained our dietary requirements and booked in excitedly for the following night. The restaurant is off the main road and up and couple of flights of stairs so could possibly be a little tricky to get to but with the help of google maps, we didn’t find it too difficult. Upon arrival we were greeted by the owner and his lovely little dog milo who is super friendly, my little one had a great time playing with him. If you are uncomfortable with dining with a dog around they are more than happy to take him away. The restaurant is a small family owned business with what I believe is autentic korean food. We were served the korean bbq with halal chicken and beef, a variety of banchan (sides) and dips. My dream of being in a kdrama grilling my own meat was making me excited at this point. You are given a grilling place and seperate tongs for raw and cooked meat. Everything tasted absolutely delicious and I couldn’t fault it. I guess to get things perfect though, you would have to have some prior experience of how to cook your own meat. If you’re not so comfortable with this, there is a giant menu of other things you could try. My elder daughter had the kimchi fried rice and said it was the best shes ever had! Once we finished with our main we were offered the dessert menu, we saw an unfamiliar name “bingsu” and questioned what it is. When we were told it was a sort of shaved ice cream - we HAD to try it. We went for both the original and strawberry flavour. OMG OMG - think tasty snow melting in your mouth. The bingsu was so GOOD we went back to just to have it again after a couple of months! Korean pancake was divine too. Worth visiting even JUST for the bingsu! Trust me!!

We go to Oshibi every time we are in York and are never disappointed. As soon as you walk in the door it feels like you are a part of the family. We chose to cook on the BBQ and were served the most delicious assortment of meats, vegetables and side dishes. Through the meal we were also brought some free surprise dishes like fried chicken and dumplings. We cannot recommend Oshibi enough, and our one regret is that we can't come to York more often to eat there.

Very disappointed with this restaurant. I agree with other reviews about the environment comparing it to a warehouse (also the table and chairs are quite sticky; when I asked for a take away box is with water, in this case I was not sure if it was washed and reused), but generally happy to accept this with the expectation that the food must be exceptional. Sadly, the food was subpar and overpriced. We ordered 1 rice thing + 1 soda drink for each, but in total our meal for two came to over 50 pounds. We even had to pay an additional 3 pound to include an egg with our bibimbap - something we've never had to do at other korean restaurants (even in London!) I am afraid if it is not about the profit but egg tolerance, I would be only asked if I wanted an egg or not than charging 3 pounds if I wanted one. I would not recommend visiting.

Visited Saturday (11/11) night as a couple and the whole experience was a huge disappointment. We ordered the Bulgogi, the Yang Nyum Chicken, two portions of boiled rice. Service: Waitress was polite but not very attentive. The place was almost empty and she took almost 10 minutes to come and take our order. Also, two young men that work in the kitchen could be seen laughing and giggling at times as if they were on a school break, which is not very professional for customers to see given that part of the kitchen can be seen from the dining area. The two dishes were not delivered together (not even the rice). First came the bulgogi and then we had to wait around 4 minutes for the rice and another 5 for the chicken. Food: The Bulgogi was okay, but that's the minimum one can expect. Chicken: Not fried on the spot (as one might expect) which reduces the quality and consistency significantly. From where I was sitting I could see chicken being taken out of the oven (it had been pre-fried and then warmed up - at least it was not put on the microwave). The portions of rice are tiny (and cost £3.95 each!). But if they were at least good, I would not complain... However, the rice had the taste, appearance and consistency of microwaved rice, not something that came straight from a pot or rice cooker. Atmosphere: The place is tiny and the kitchen can be seen from the dining area. However, this does not imply the atmosphere cannot be made cozy and pleasant. Depending on where you sit it looks like you are in a warehouse or a teenager's messy bedroom, as random carton boxes and other stuff can be seen lying around. In total, with the food aforementioned + two cans of coke I paid £47,00. Certainly a ripoff, definitely not coming back or recommending it.

I’ve visited Oshibi before a couple years ago and previously really enjoyed it so decided to visit again when I was in York. While the food is tasty, the portions have become unreasonably small for the price that you pay. I was in a party of 4 and we ordered two kbbq sets, a fried chicken, and a beef bibimbap with fried egg. You get two choice of meats in each kbbq set but the portions were tiny and the banchan plate was meagre at best. Though we paid a whopping £2.95 extra for the fried egg on the bibimbap, the egg yolk was entirely over cooked and not runny at all. We enjoyed the fried chicken the best but the plate only comes with five small pieces and it’s portion is more akin to an appetizer. The bill came to £90 but unfortunately we all left feeling hungry. With the huge selection of eateries in York, there are plenty of better options and I won’t be returning to Oshibi.

Incredible, authentic, high-quality Korean BBQ. We adore this place and have dined here a couple of times now, and each time I leave, I am satisfied but depressed knowing it will be a while before I go back again! 🤣 If you've ever been curious about Korean cuisine just take the plunge and book yourself a table (crucial to pre-book as whilst they do accept walk ins, it is an intimate restaurant, only capable of holding around 30 people across 5/6 tables so it fills up quick) the food is superb and my words can't do justice to the flavours and textures you'll get to experience. A few notable entries are tteokbokki, the Bulgogi beef, and the crispy chicken (any flavour choice is a good one) If for some reason you are still reading this, just go and book a table already, you won't regret it.

An upstairs room that's clean and bright. As it was a hot evening, I didn't order bibimbap (my favourite Korean dish). We decided to share some crispy fried chicken and spicy squid with rice. The fried chicken was as described but it reminded me of chicken McNuggets. Our rice was brought and waited for our squid. It took a while to catch a server's eye to enquire if they had forgotten our squid. They had. We asked for some fresh, warm rice with the squid. It was okay but not worth the wait (or the money). I have read reviews criticising the prices here, so I won't join the pile-on. However, whilst I applaud the entrepreneurial zeal in opening a Korean restaurant in York, it's a very competitive city and you need to be setting high standards to build a sustainable customer base of people who come back regularly. I'm not sure that Oshibi is delivering the goods. In summary, a disappointing evening out and not too satisfactory.

We took my Auntie out for her birthday here and had a great evening. The atmosphere and the service made it feel very homey. There was a huge table of people in the middle who when they heard we were celebrating a birthday bought us shots of soju and sang to us (I’m not sure in what language, but it wasn’t Korean or English!), which was a lovely surprise. To eat we shared a range of plates - bulgogi beef (which came with lettuce leaves), yang nyum chicken, tukboki with cheese (rice cakes), kimchi jeon (pancake), 10 mandu (vegetable dumplings). With two beers and service it came to £98 which wasn’t bad for a hearty meal for 3 of us. Everything was delicious, and I’d happily have everything again, but particularly the tukboki (get the cheese topping!) and bulgogi beef.

Absolutely amazing visit! We were a little apprehensive as never had Korean food before and not sure what to order or how to order etc. However, that worry was eliminated when we arrived and ordered. The owner, who was the chef that night talked us through our order, as there was a slight confusion as to what we wanted for starters. That was sorted and the honey and butter chicken, as well as the dumpling like veggie starters were amazing. Both our mains were flavoursome and plentiful, so much so, we left extremely stuffed. The co-owner/front of house was amazing and really funny, complimentary shots due to various patrons birthdays 😂😂! Was an amazing evening, will definitely go back when we visit York again. Thanks for looking after us! Make sure you book though, as numerous people were turned away on a Tuesday evening .

Really pleased with everything we ordered, ended up ordering more after we’d had our main because we just wanted to try so much more! Really unexpected having to cook the meat yourself but also means we could cook beef how we like it. Was nice to experience something new. As for comments about the restaurant in other posts, it’s a top floor restaurant in an old York building. We thought it was fine, snug and intimate. Staff were so attentive and the food was great! We have ate here a couple of times and they deserve a good write up, because the food is great. The service and friendliness of the family who run it is top tier and the food is good and very different to a lot of what you can get in the local area. In particular that Korean fried chicken… last time we went we ordered some more. Some other reviewers have pointed to prices as an issue but I’d say it’s on par with the rest of York, which is generally an expensive city to run a restaurant with the price of our real estate. You get what you pay for and I’m happy to pay for the food here- it is really good and always welcoming when we have been :).

I understand other reviews with concerns about price. The 3 star rating for food is because of the portion sizes. There were 3 of us and the bill was £129. I had the grilled chicken with only 4 small pieces at 9.95, and a small bowl of rice we ordered additionally with kimchi was not enough, it also had a bitter taste. My chicken did not taste like teriyaki also and the sides and dips offered with the price of the bbq are miniscule. The teokbokki and veg dumplings were incredibly tasty and moreish but again small portions so we ended up ordering two. The sliced pork for bbq was also just bacon. Service was excellent really friendly staff. Overall the price tag did not reflect the surroundings, it is a cafe and £129 for the portion sizes is not reflected in the food or the environment. I note the owner advised there are costs such as music etc in another review but this was not turned on until part way through the meal. There should also be better ventilation and more space for a table bbq. Some of the food was really tasty but I do think the menu and prices need to be reviewed.

I opted for the Bibimbap, my usual go to dish. I've had this at many Korean restaurants across the country and have all been pretty similar give or take. This one was vastly different, the hot dish it's served in was hot but soon cooled down and came with (sautéed?) onions and big chunks of broccoli, no pickled ginger, carrots or courgettes. The sauce was not served in a separate dish as standard meaning you couldn't decide on the volume you used and the egg was fried (I was aware of this when ordering) but would have preferred it raw. Overall the dish was tasty don't get me wrong, but very different to every Bibimbap I've had before and at a far higher price tag too

We googled for a Korean Barbecue and found this place. We were up from Portsmouth, where we have an excellent Korean Barbecue restaurant. (Everything more expensive down south, I think not). The Korean Barbecue we use in portsmouth is £21.00 for their classic barbecue menu, but thats all in, sides, sauces rice, all included (except drinks which are about £5 to £6). The food in this place was ok but the cost of the extra's were ridiculous. Beers at £7.00, and Kimchi Rice £13.95 a portion!!! Kimchi Rice at our normal restaurant is £7.90. On top of that a 10% service charge added (for food you cook yourself) yes its discretionary, but who wants an argument in a restaurant. All in all £45 each for a not so great experience.

I don't know why somebody couldn't find this place, as we only knew it existed because we saw the sign in Fossgate. Very friendly family run restaurant just off the bottom end of Fossgate. The food is good - the bulgogi, and kimchi were excellent....

I went to this restaurant to celebrate the end of my PhD. Unfortunately the food was very overpriced; the portions were too small for what we paid. Though the experience might seem novel, I wasn't sure how long to cook things for and in the end understood that it would be better to eat a dish that was cooked and of a good portion. It was also quite smoky in the restaurant itself because everyone was cooking. I have spent some time in Korean restaurants in Korea and Japan and this wasn’t the authentic experience and taste that I encountered there.

Poor quality food and expensive. The BBQ meat seemed old. The BBQ was also like £20 for 50-80 grams of beef. Left the restaurant hungry and disappointed.

Make it obvious where it is. Travelled the block couldn’t find it. Saw others with the same issue. Shame since we’d been looking forward to it all week but I’m not staying out in low temps to play a scavenger hunt for the front door.

Great food, awesome staff and lovely owners. Went here for a birthday and it was very special. A restaurant with a focus on humanity unlike the big chains who are owned by some hedge fund. Definitely worth checking out.

Was visiting York for the weekend with my significant other and wanted to show her something different to what she's used too. Staff were very welcoming on Friday the 21st of January and the atmosphere of the restaurant felt like I was just dining out in someone's dining room which I loved. Much more relaxing than the usual restaurant dining experience. You almost feel at home here. Highly recommend visiting for an evening meal or date night and be sure to book a reservation! I highly recommend you also try the honey butter chicken. We had to fight over the final piece! If I'm ever heading back to York, I will be heading back for more, no questions asked.

So so good. My first time in a korean place and my expectations were well exceeded. I got the beef bulgogi and my gf got yang nyum chicken, along with kimchi, rice and veggie dumplings, all of it was delicious. Both meats were cooked perfectly which impressed us both, we've both worked with food before so we know how hard it can be. Only drawbacks were the small portions of kimchi and my food wasnt as spicy as I'd have liked. However the chef came over personally and explained increasing the heat could change the intended flavour so thats on us, we'll just get something intended to be mega spicy next time. Otherwise the meal was perfect and we had no complaints. Also the young girl who served us was lovely and very helpful, her and the chef coming over was very appreciated and made our experience much better so thank you to them. We'll defo be back next time we come to york!

My partner and I visited Oshibi's four years ago, back when it was a couple of tables in the small downstairs section - it was a fantastic experience and we were glad to finally have a chance to return. However, something has since gone terribly wrong. The restaurant is much bigger now and, thankfully, the service was still friendly, but we didn't get off to a good start when the mandu starter arrived with lettuce that was browning (kicking myself for not taking a photo).Determined to have a good time, we ignored it and eagerly awaited the mains. A plate the size of my hand arrived with about 10 pieces of tteokbokki. Honey and butter chicken arrived, it was dry but tasted great so no complaints... but accompanying tiny bowl of rice was, without doubt, reheated rice - complete with hard bits from the bottom of the rice cooker. The food was obviously not fresh, likely prepared earlier that day - or the day before - and reheated for serving. The biggest sting was the price, as it was extortionate for the size let alone quality. £3 for cheese on your tteokbokki and £2.50 for a baby's fist of rice! We left with a completely different opinion this time and within the hour had to go around the corner and order food elsewhere, as we were still hungry! It was half the price and much nicer. Now, there are enough positive reviews on here to make me think that maybe we visited on a bad day ie a week day... but no matter how much we wanted Oshibi to be our 'hidden gem' in York, we've been burned and won't be returning.

I liked it. Others I was with were less sure. Cook your own food at your table. Good fun, and there is food available that the chef cooks. Different experience to the norm. Staff were great.

We where on our last night on a trip to York to see the Christmas market and have a break from the woes in life when idley browsing through places to eat on Google maps looking for something oriental. Having now stumbled upon Oshibi and the wife giving it her approval too we decided to book a table for the evening. Upon arriving it feels like a small family orientated restaurant it's not a huge place but that's half of the appeal the staff where very friendly and good with advice about the meals as naturally you have to choose the grill as why else would you go to such a place? The food was amazing and the whole place had a vibe that we hadn't really felt in a long time and really enjoyed the overall experience just wished we had found it a few nights before so we could of gone a few more times! Thank you Oshibi right up there on one of the best experiences of dining we have had.
