We stumbled on Oshibi on our first night in York and are really glad we did. In a small space in the rafters, you're first greeted by the friendly staff and a friendly little dog. The food is delicious and fresh - we had the kimchi pancakes and tofu with japchae noodles and tofu with fried rice. The kitchen is right by the restaurant so you can see the food being made. Kimchi pancakes were brilliant and the tofu tasted especially fresh. Really glad we found it!

Anyone who's read my reviews before knows I'm a huge fan of authenticity. I believe there's something special about trying a dish, which you know is the genuine article... The real deal. I felt this when I went to Little Italy on Goodramgate (another restaurant in York). But one venue that has recently stood out to me for its authenticity is Oshibi Korean Bistro & BBQ. Tucked down an alley on Fossgate, Oshibi sits in the attic of the same building that Batanga (a Mexican restaurant) calls home. Once there, your attention is quickly drawn to the small size of the venue. It's pokey... Intimate... Cosy, even. But this only adds to the welcoming atmosphere. The service is lovely. When you walk through the door, you're greeted by a small dog (I want to say she's a Shih Tzu, but I can't say for certain). When I visited with my girlfriend, not long ago, I counted maybe eight or nine tables, each with four seats (give or take). I'd say there's room for maybe 30 to 40 people at any one time, all being served by two attentive waitresses (and the little dog, of course). Some of the tables have a hot plate built into them, so you can cook your own meat. However, my girlfriend and I decided to leave it to the professionals when we made our visit. We started with the Kimchi Jeon (kimchi pancakes), which were excellent. They had a lovely, warm kick of spice and beautifully crispy edges. Afterwards, we moved onto the Kimari (deep-fried seaweed spring rolls), which tasted very fresh. The taste was reminiscent of the smell of the sea. I didn't dislike it, but I felt the Kimari paled in comparison to some of the other dishes we tried. We then had the Honey Buttered Chicken, which, I have to say, we had a fairly good idea of what it would be like. It was crispy, warm, and comforting. After that, we tried the Japchae (stir-fried noodles) with tofu and vegetables. This dish, if anything, was a welcome palate cleanser after all the strong flavours we'd been experiencing up to this point. Finally, we had the Tukboki. And oh my word... I felt as though the dish had been created with me in mind. I'm sure Tukboki is nothing of the sort, but to me, it tasted like a Korean lasagne. It was stodgy, hot, and wonderfully filling. I believe they fill a dish with rice cakes or fish cakes and cover it in a gochujang sauce. We also added cheese to it (hence my comparison to a lasagne). Needless to say, I left Oshibi with a full stomach, rosy cheeks, and the unwavering desire to go back. I would heartily recommend it to anyone who's looking for York's hidden gems.

First time trying Korean food, a small cosy restaurant hid away from the busy street. Run by a really friendly team with a little dog. Great tasting authentic food with lots of flavour. If you're not sure what to have, just ask, and they'll explain the menu. Would say this place is a little more expensive than what we'd usually pay, but glad we had the opportunity to try it.

We pre-booked Friday night due to the great reviews. Was not disappointed, we were treated to some lovely service and friendly hospitality. My partner had the bulgogi bibimbap with friend egg, very fresh and great portion. I had the BBQ buffet. The condiments were lovely, the meat was fresh and marinated. All the meat was delicious and very tender. Highlight was the beef and the spicy pork. You can order as much as you want and was such fun cooking our own food on the table. Really loved the experience of taking lettuce and filling it with lovely meat, rice and kimchi. They also brought a few tasters to our table during the BBQ which was a lovely touch. Definitely want to try the fried chicken next time! We want to go back as was one of our favourites dining experiences. Great value and this family run restaurant is a little gem that you need to try.

I made an attempt to book 3x by calling the number given on google over the past 2 weeks, no answer. The phone number on the website does not exist There is no online booking form and I sent enquiries online about a booking. Since I was so keen to eat here, I turned up. The waiter asked me if I had a booking, I explained I didn’t and why. He said they were fully booked which was fair enough. I asked how I might book so this doesn’t happen again since I had tried to and he said he wouldn’t explain it to me until after he had taken some orders with a real arrogant ‘stop wasting my time’ tone. Real shame as now the way I was treated in a 20 second exchange has put me off eating here for ever. The setup was nice and I’m sure the food was lovely - just wish I had figured out how to book it so I can try it!!

The honey butter chicken was so tender and delicious. It was even better than I remembered! Yang nyum prawns were big with a crispy batter and an amazing spicy sauce. We visited recently for my daughter's birthday. We have been several times over the last few years, but we were really disappointed unfortunately on this occasion. It has changed and not for the better! We were confused by the different menus, one for a BBQ buffet and the other for non BBQ food. Three of us got non BBQ food and the other two went for the BBQ. Just to add here that the BBQ costs £25 per person. We asked for one set of the 5 protein and one set of just beef. The girl said I'll bring you all 5. Er ok. A bit strange as my son only wanted beef. When it came it was all 5 protein but barely enough of each for one person. We ended up ordering two lots of extra beef which we were then charged for, making it a very expensive evening!! We were also seated on the big table for 5, it was under an open window and there seemed to be about 2 air conditioners blasting on to it, not only was it chilly but the food got cold really quickly! My daughter is studying Korean at uni and has been to more Korean restaurants recently in Sheffield, and she was shocked by the price and quality, and how the restaurant seems to have become a victim of its own success unfortunately. We were just left feeling quite disappointed as we've had some lovely nights here before.

My son and I discovered Oshibi above a Mexican restaurant and decided to give it a go. I am so glad we did. We opted for the Korean BBQ Buffet which comes with 5 proteins - bulgogi, mixed seafood, spicy pork, sliced pork, and chicken teriyaki. Not wanting to waste food, we asked for just the spicy pork and bulgogi. We were each served a dish of each protein to cook at our table, along with rice, lettuce wraps, kimchi, red bean paste, and spicy mayo. In addition, the kitchen kept gifting us delicious bites, including a cucumber kimchi salad, sweet and sour chicken, dumplings, fried kimchi pancake and a wonderful vegetarian lettuce wrap with pomegranate seeds. We finished with a wonderful strawberry boonsai to share. This, along wiht a Korean grape soda and a large glass of red wine totaled 80 pounds. Will definitely return the next time we are in York, which I hope is very soon.

My partner and I were visiting York and wanted somewhere to eat, we were going to visit and alternative venue but found out that it was cash only so came here and we wearnt disappointed! Oshibi is a little bit tucked away but worth hunting down! It was a quiet night so it was just ourselves in the restaurant but it never felt awkward and the team were so welcoming, we were also greeted by a lovely small dog who was very sweet, well trained and would occasionally just come over and lie down near us. The staff checked a few times that we were okay with the dog but we love dogs and were more than happy for the company. We looked at the menu and were told that they were doing a new offer also of an all you can eat bbq for £25pp, my partner and I both chose this and can't express how happy we were with the food. We were given plates of meat to start cooking as well as rice, dipping sauces, kimchi and pickled salad. Throughout the evening we were also bought hot dishes by the kitchen team such as fried chicken, kimchi pancakes, lettuce wraps with large thin slices of pickled raddish and fried dumplings. We had several more plates of meat and finished the meal satisfied. Despite our better judgement (based on how full we were) we decided to try and squeeze in a dessert and went for the traditonal bingsu and honestly we don't regret a thing! We got the bingsu to share and it was so light, delicious and refreshing. Even my partner who is a picky eater enjoyed both the main and dessert and tried lots of new things! I would confidently reccomend oshibi to anyone for their fantastic food and service.

Upon our search for interesting halal places to eat during our stay in York, we soon came to realise that our options were so limited. Which is quite unfortunate. However, this Korean BBQ place looked so tempting and i’ve always wanted to try it so we tried our luck and called up. The owner was so lovely on the phone and said they didn’t normally serve halal meat however if we booked a table for the following night they would personally go and get some for us!! How lovely!? Who does that? So we explained our dietary requirements and booked in excitedly for the following night. The restaurant is off the main road and up and couple of flights of stairs so could possibly be a little tricky to get to but with the help of google maps, we didn’t find it too difficult. Upon arrival we were greeted by the owner and his lovely little dog milo who is super friendly, my little one had a great time playing with him. If you are uncomfortable with dining with a dog around they are more than happy to take him away. The restaurant is a small family owned business with what I believe is autentic korean food. We were served the korean bbq with halal chicken and beef, a variety of banchan (sides) and dips. My dream of being in a kdrama grilling my own meat was making me excited at this point. You are given a grilling place and seperate tongs for raw and cooked meat. Everything tasted absolutely delicious and I couldn’t fault it. I guess to get things perfect though, you would have to have some prior experience of how to cook your own meat. If you’re not so comfortable with this, there is a giant menu of other things you could try. My elder daughter had the kimchi fried rice and said it was the best shes ever had! Once we finished with our main we were offered the dessert menu, we saw an unfamiliar name “bingsu” and questioned what it is. When we were told it was a sort of shaved ice cream - we HAD to try it. We went for both the original and strawberry flavour. OMG OMG - think tasty snow melting in your mouth. The bingsu was so GOOD we went back to just to have it again after a couple of months! Korean pancake was divine too. Worth visiting even JUST for the bingsu! Trust me!!

Very disappointed with this restaurant. I agree with other reviews about the environment comparing it to a warehouse (also the table and chairs are quite sticky; when I asked for a take away box is with water, in this case I was not sure if it was washed and reused), but generally happy to accept this with the expectation that the food must be exceptional. Sadly, the food was subpar and overpriced. We ordered 1 rice thing + 1 soda drink for each, but in total our meal for two came to over 50 pounds. We even had to pay an additional 3 pound to include an egg with our bibimbap - something we've never had to do at other korean restaurants (even in London!) I am afraid if it is not about the profit but egg tolerance, I would be only asked if I wanted an egg or not than charging 3 pounds if I wanted one. I would not recommend visiting.

Visited Saturday (11/11) night as a couple and the whole experience was a huge disappointment. We ordered the Bulgogi, the Yang Nyum Chicken, two portions of boiled rice. Service: Waitress was polite but not very attentive. The place was almost empty and she took almost 10 minutes to come and take our order. Also, two young men that work in the kitchen could be seen laughing and giggling at times as if they were on a school break, which is not very professional for customers to see given that part of the kitchen can be seen from the dining area. The two dishes were not delivered together (not even the rice). First came the bulgogi and then we had to wait around 4 minutes for the rice and another 5 for the chicken. Food: The Bulgogi was okay, but that's the minimum one can expect. Chicken: Not fried on the spot (as one might expect) which reduces the quality and consistency significantly. From where I was sitting I could see chicken being taken out of the oven (it had been pre-fried and then warmed up - at least it was not put on the microwave). The portions of rice are tiny (and cost £3.95 each!). But if they were at least good, I would not complain... However, the rice had the taste, appearance and consistency of microwaved rice, not something that came straight from a pot or rice cooker. Atmosphere: The place is tiny and the kitchen can be seen from the dining area. However, this does not imply the atmosphere cannot be made cozy and pleasant. Depending on where you sit it looks like you are in a warehouse or a teenager's messy bedroom, as random carton boxes and other stuff can be seen lying around. In total, with the food aforementioned + two cans of coke I paid £47,00. Certainly a ripoff, definitely not coming back or recommending it.

First time trying Korean food, very tasty, had a go at cooking it at the table, enjoyed it but not sure if I would do that again, the other dishes we had were lovely so would have prepared dishes next time.

I’ve visited Oshibi before a couple years ago and previously really enjoyed it so decided to visit again when I was in York. While the food is tasty, the portions have become unreasonably small for the price that you pay. I was in a party of 4 and we ordered two kbbq sets, a fried chicken, and a beef bibimbap with fried egg. You get two choice of meats in each kbbq set but the portions were tiny and the banchan plate was meagre at best. Though we paid a whopping £2.95 extra for the fried egg on the bibimbap, the egg yolk was entirely over cooked and not runny at all. We enjoyed the fried chicken the best but the plate only comes with five small pieces and it’s portion is more akin to an appetizer. The bill came to £90 but unfortunately we all left feeling hungry. With the huge selection of eateries in York, there are plenty of better options and I won’t be returning to Oshibi.

I really hate writing a bad review but this place has gotten so much worse! It’s insanely expensive for the portion sizes and you have to add rice onto dishes which are already £12-14?! To top the experience off I saw one of the kitchen staff come up the stairs with frozen chicken from Lidl. Not worth the money at all.

Incredible, authentic, high-quality Korean BBQ. We adore this place and have dined here a couple of times now, and each time I leave, I am satisfied but depressed knowing it will be a while before I go back again! 🤣 If you've ever been curious about Korean cuisine just take the plunge and book yourself a table (crucial to pre-book as whilst they do accept walk ins, it is an intimate restaurant, only capable of holding around 30 people across 5/6 tables so it fills up quick) the food is superb and my words can't do justice to the flavours and textures you'll get to experience. A few notable entries are tteokbokki, the Bulgogi beef, and the crispy chicken (any flavour choice is a good one) If for some reason you are still reading this, just go and book a table already, you won't regret it.

An upstairs room that's clean and bright. As it was a hot evening, I didn't order bibimbap (my favourite Korean dish). We decided to share some crispy fried chicken and spicy squid with rice. The fried chicken was as described but it reminded me of chicken McNuggets. Our rice was brought and waited for our squid. It took a while to catch a server's eye to enquire if they had forgotten our squid. They had. We asked for some fresh, warm rice with the squid. It was okay but not worth the wait (or the money). I have read reviews criticising the prices here, so I won't join the pile-on. However, whilst I applaud the entrepreneurial zeal in opening a Korean restaurant in York, it's a very competitive city and you need to be setting high standards to build a sustainable customer base of people who come back regularly. I'm not sure that Oshibi is delivering the goods. In summary, a disappointing evening out and not too satisfactory.

Found this restaurant by chance before my trip to York. The food was amazing, the chapjae was my personal favourite! The service was friendly and the atmosphere had a nice homely feel, it was like visiting an old friend. Can't wait to eat here again when I visit York next time. :) xxx

We took my Auntie out for her birthday here and had a great evening. The atmosphere and the service made it feel very homey. There was a huge table of people in the middle who when they heard we were celebrating a birthday bought us shots of soju and sang to us (I’m not sure in what language, but it wasn’t Korean or English!), which was a lovely surprise. To eat we shared a range of plates - bulgogi beef (which came with lettuce leaves), yang nyum chicken, tukboki with cheese (rice cakes), kimchi jeon (pancake), 10 mandu (vegetable dumplings). With two beers and service it came to £98 which wasn’t bad for a hearty meal for 3 of us. Everything was delicious, and I’d happily have everything again, but particularly the tukboki (get the cheese topping!) and bulgogi beef.

Absolutely amazing visit! We were a little apprehensive as never had Korean food before and not sure what to order or how to order etc. However, that worry was eliminated when we arrived and ordered. The owner, who was the chef that night talked us through our order, as there was a slight confusion as to what we wanted for starters. That was sorted and the honey and butter chicken, as well as the dumpling like veggie starters were amazing. Both our mains were flavoursome and plentiful, so much so, we left extremely stuffed. The co-owner/front of house was amazing and really funny, complimentary shots due to various patrons birthdays 😂😂! Was an amazing evening, will definitely go back when we visit York again. Thanks for looking after us! Make sure you book though, as numerous people were turned away on a Tuesday evening .

A lovely place for Thai food. I have been a few times and intend to come back. The portions are big and super tasty. They have a good selection of drinks too, I recommend their Thai iced tea, it is delicious. The staff were friendly and attentive.

Absolutely amazing, I was in food heaven. Manager was so nice and considerate. Asked my how day was, which was nice. He wad absolutely charming. Again, the food was stunning. Looked lovely and tasted better than any in Acomb. Would recommend to everybody ever. The rich juicy flavours of the chicken really brought out the exquisite spice of the sauce. The makkani was to die for

Came here after being let down by a nearby restaurant. It was nearly 9pm and the place was getting quiet, the setting is nice though a little basic. Some of the TA photos show tables with place mats and glasses with coloued knapkins, this would have brightened it up a bit rather than the bare tables. However this is not a negative comment just an observation. We were here to eat... the food was excellent, prawn starter and spring rolls were very tasty. They did ask if we wanted the mains when they cleared the starters or did we want a short break between, that's always nice especially as in some establishments we've been presented with the mains while still eating the starters. The mains were excellent, there didn't look a lot but belive me it was more than enough. The staff were very friendly, the meal was good value for money, and we would return next time in York

Food is ok but ordered a delivery through Deliveroo and they left off half the order. I called the restaurant and they basically said they’d do nothing about it and I should contact Deliveroo. I told them that the delivery wasn’t the issue and it was the missing order (that I paid for) and just wanted the rest of my order and they told me they wouldn’t help. It’s really good enough to be honest.

Believe the hype! Delicious Nepalese food. We loved every single morsel. We had the Lamb Thali, Salmon Thali, Himalayan Lamb, garlic naan, dumpling soup. And dessert, the Carrot Halwa. All exactly the right balance of spices and flavour. All the ingredients were super fresh. We will DEFINITELY come back. Oh and the service was friendly and the prices very reasonable. Less than £100 for 4 very full and satisfied adults :-)
