We were looking for a dog-friendly restaurant in York and this came up in a search probably because it's got "Dog" in its name. However it is genuinely dog-friendly too which was really nice. Really top notch Thai food in an informal, slightly 'cafe-like' restaurant. The staff were very friendly, and even bought a bowl of water over for our dog. In fact they even offered some prawn crackers for the dog (which we declined - can't imagine what they'd do to the dog's digestive tract!). Note restaurant accepts cash only, (at Feb 2024).

We found this restaurant on Google maps for while we were at a nearby guest house and what a gem of a place. The food was absolutely fantastic. It was cash only, but they let you know when you phone to book, so not an issue. Would use again if in the area

Absolute little gem of a restaurant. The food was delicious and the service was quick. I had pangane curry with sticky rice and my partner had the massamam curry. Huge pieces of beef in his and lots of them. I had duck and the only complaint is that there was a layer of skin on it. I don't mind skin but it wasn't crispy so had to cut it all off. But apart from that minor thing it was really tasty. Definitely go back while we are in York. 10 out of 10 for taste and service.

Came here by myself while my partner was waiting in A&E (Boyfriend of the year ⭐️). I’ve been to many Thai restaurants and this was perhaps the best one. Amazing food. They did forget to put the spicy in my spicy noodles but it turned out to be better this way because they gave me a bowl of chilli flakes so I could make it just the right level of spicy for myself. Very friendly staff. Strongly recommend anyone bored and hungry waiting with someone at A&E to come here. Just remember to bring them back a sandwich from the co op.

Our favourite Thai restaurant in York. Recommend cod in Black pepper sauce - beautifully fried cod and better than most chippies! You won't be disappointed. Note that they are cash only.

What an incredible find. We were staying outside the city centre and came across this place on our walk from the hotel and thought the food looked nice and reasonably priced. My husband went for the Thai iced tea and it was unbelievable- so beautifully and perfectly sweet. Our food was cooked fresh to order and was fantastic- just the perfect blend of spices. It was just such a wonderful meal and our host was brilliant too!

Lovely independent restaurant and great tasting food - ordered the sharing platter and a couple fo currys, everthing was perfect bar the ribs which were unfortunately very dry so one star down but the rest of the meal and service more than made up for it - iced tea was amazing too 🍹👌😊

We dined in and it was very good. It is like eating in a delivery/collection takeaway as that part of the business is very busy. The staff are very good. The food choice and quality is excellent. We had the mixed starter and there was plenty and all hot and tasty. Mains were good and generous portions. Wait between starters and mains was a bit long but they were busy with deliveries. Recommended Thai food

We ordered a take away which was over hours late. Firstly they send someone else’s order. Then It arrived with missing main items. We called the restaurant who resent it. It all was cold. They promised they would refund the meal. We ordered it via Just Eat. We did as they instructed. But they refused the request and wouldn’t even engaged into a discussion with us. The order was over £60. The restaurant customer service was really disappointing. When we called again they basically told us they this never happened

Sehr leckeres und günstiges Thai Essen in eher grösseren Portionen. Das Lokal ist winzig und hat für Max. 14 Gäste Platz. Die Dame die uns bedient hat war sehr freundlich und aufmerksam.

Loved this restaurant, it had a laid back cafe feel, not too posh! Service was brilliant, very quick, food came very quickly and was excellent and very reasonably priced. Would head straight back to this place if I were in the area again. Only downside was it was cash only - there's a coop just up the road with a cashpoint though!

Not many tables and a little out of the way but well worth a visit for beautiful Thai food and a reasonable price. Staff are great and you can take your dog too.

Found by chance, as it was close to our accommodation for the weekend. The food came quickly and there was a great selection. A super meal at very fair prices for York. Worth the short walk from the city centre. Well recommend.

Called in for a takeaway on a Saturday evening wile staying overnight in York. Ordered a sharing platter for 2, beef massamam curry, spicy noodle (with chicken) and few sides. Very polite service, very speedy preparation while I was waiting. The food was absolutely delicious, the massamam curry was the best we have ever tasted, the beef perfectly cooked, the noodles were indeed spicy 🔥🥰. The mixed starter was lovely with the dipping sauces on the side. Will absolutely be back here next time we visit York (unless you want to open another branch anywhere near Rotherham 😊) x

We read a few of the reviews and decided to give it a go. We love Thai food and this restaurant/takeaway serves some of the best Thai food we’ve ever had. It’s a small restaurant but what it lacks in size it makes an impact with its food which is delicious and as many people have said, the best outside of Thailand. Definitely highly recommend

What a surprise - booked a table for 4 of us at what at first looks predominantly a takeaway . Anyway we were welcomed warmly to the small dining area. The food was delicious and the service excellent and very good value for money. Would highly recommend.

We love this local restaurant and hadn't been for a while due to Covid. We booked for Saturday Evening, and glad we did as they don't have many tables. We shared Spring Rolls to start ,then the Massaman Curry and a spicy Stir Fry, (sorry I forgot the name)! Everything was so good, service is great and I am so glad they survived the Pandemic, they work so hard and are always busy with takeaways. I thoroughly recommend The Monkey & The Dog if you like Thai food, it's a great little restaurant and i feel lucky to live closeby. Just make sure you take cash as they don't accept Credit Cards.

The food was delicious. Sea bass, fruity red chicken curry, soft shell crab, spring rolls ... Aroy mak! Lots of take out customers who seemed to be regulars.

A hot and tasty Thai green curry. Authentic Thai taste with generous portions too. Chicken satay just average but the curry was the main reason I was here and it hit the c spot. Unofficial Carpark in the garage across the toad. Enjoy!

Wow what can I say and where should I start…..cash only as machine is out of order (has been for the last 8 months or so) not saying it’s right but we should all be paying our fair share in taxes, shouldn’t we? Delivery was quick but cash on delivery with the driver having no change.……..Food was the worst take away I’ve eaten, bland, tasteless and over priced and poor quality. Have had meals from here in the past and although the quality varies the food has been pretty good. I don’t normally write reviews but in this instance I felt I had to. Will not be using this takeaway again.

Had a take-away, which was delivered promptly. Sharing Platter starter was great, ample for two people, then a Prawn Pad Thai, and a Prawn Red Curry & Coconut Rice. Curry was especially good. Both mains had very generous helpings of really HUGE prawns. Can't wait to try some of their other dishes. Martin

Had a takeaway last night, very good - I am a thai food fan and if you want real thai food, yuo have to have Pad Krapow Gai (on their menu it is Pad Sweet Basil and Chilli) - spicy, just as you want it. Apart from this we just had a selection of starters, all were good, but it is the Pad Krapow Gai with the small bits of chilli that stood out to me.

Very humble appearance from the outside, located close to hospital and not in the heart of city centre. Their 'Sizzling Lamb' was mildly spicy, very tasty lamb and aubergines with. I used sticky rice to soak up the sauce. This was recommended to me by the Thai waitress - and I'm very glad I took up her suggestion. I washed it down with Thai ice tea - which was a good combination with this dish.

We wanted a takeaway this week during lockdown and decided on this restaurant as we like Thai food. We ordered 3 starters and 3 main courses, and every one was delicious. The delivery (by the restaurant’s own staff) was on time and the food hot. I look forward to being able to visit the restaurant in person soon !

Lovely friendly service and the best Thai green curry in town (both chicken and vegetable). Delicious Tom Yum also. Just need to improve the soft shell crab - the batter was very ‘battery’/oily and lacked seasoning. Enjoy

Mi orden habitual de Pad Thai también ha cambiado, ya no es un plato 'ligero' sino más bien 'grumoso / glupy' y lejos de mi habitual 'plato imprescindible'. El servicio también fue bastante deslucido, aunque cuando el chef trajo los platos a nuestra mesa, una gran sonrisa y algunas pequeñas palabras fueron bien recibidas. Debo decir que estoy escribiendo esta reseña con el corazón apesadumbrado. . . Durante años, he recomendado este restaurante, pero en la experiencia de las últimas noches no estoy seguro de que mi respaldo sea tan alto en el futuro. Pedimos desde aquí por recomendación. Como alguien que es muy particular sobre lo bueno de Asia oriental, este fue uno de los mejores que he probado (¡y he estado en Tailandia!). Recomiendo encarecidamente la almohadilla de albahaca con chile con arroz frito con huevo. También solicitamos una respuesta ajustada y fueron muy atentos. Servicio asombroso. No visite York sin visitar este lugar.

Me sorprende ver tantas críticas negativas, pero algunas parecen estar relacionadas con la empresa de entrega, usamos Just Eat y llegó a tiempo. Pedí pollo al curry verde tailandés y mi compañero pidió al curry de ternera Kang Ponlamai, ambos estaban deliciosos y el arroz de coco que teníamos como acompañamiento se complementaba maravillosamente. La primera vez que pedimos a The Monkey and the Dog, pero no será la última, increíble.

Reasonably priced good food. Good service. They changed cutleries and plates for you after starter and main. The restaurant itself is a bit cramped and not well ventilated. But will still go there for the food!

First and last time I order from here. 4 bits of chicken in my meal, sent wrong rice and I could of cooked better at home. Overpriced poor food.

Lamentablemente no puedo revisar la comida porque mis maridos llegaron con nuestro pedido de comida para llevar, pero el mío no. Llamaron al restaurante a las 8. 30 pm para reportarlo y me dijeron que lo enviarían lo antes posible, sonó una hora más tarde para preguntar dónde estaba y me dijeron que el conductor trataría de dármelo lo antes posible. Les dije que cancelaran el pedido y ahora luchan por obtener un reembolso a través de Uber eats sin la ayuda del restaurante sobre cómo obtener un reembolso.

Realmente disfrutamos la comida de esta comida para llevar tailandesa durante el cierre. Mi marido tenía el especial del chef de tiras de ternera Crying Tiger con ensalada y arroz glutinoso. La carne tenía un sabor delicioso con una salsa sutil pero hermosa. Tuve el pollo al curry Panage, una mezcla del curry rojo tradicional. Realmente era para morirse. Yo tenía arroz con coco. También obtuvimos galletas de gambas gratis. Con la propina de entrega, todos llegaron a menos de 30. Pero finalmente se entregó 30 minutos más tarde del tiempo estimado original en Uber Eat y tuve que llamarlos. No está bien. Pero a pesar de esto por la calidad de la comida lo recomiendo. Sugiero que los llames directamente en lugar de usar Uber Eat para intentar acelerarlo. Piensa que inicialmente pueden haber extraviado el pedido.

Very friendly staff. Tasty Curries. Deliciously flavoursome ribs and a Tom yum yum yum. The take away can be a pretty long wait due to popularity so if you can, go collect for swifter service. Enjoy!

It's a family birthday and we are self isolating. The order we made via uber eats this morning didn't seem to be processed so I called the restaurant, and the lady on the phone very helpfully and kindly began our order straight away.She was so kind and pleasant and the food was great.

Having eaten at the restaurant a couple of times we decided to order a take away, to be delivered. What a massive mistake, we ordered a chicken massaman curry, Penang curry, pad mee & guay tiew kaih mow, the latter two were noodle dishes with no meat. The curry’s arrived just Luke warm and had to be put in the microwave, one set of ribbon noodles were a big clump of stodge , which you couldn’t seperate, they went straight in the bin. On trying to plate up the curry, it was like thin gravy texture, having eaten at most thai restaurants in york, I have never known a texture like it. The food had little taste and no spice whatsoever. This meal was £36, I honestly would not eat it for free. Whoever sent this meal out should be ashamed. If I can pull anything positive out of this take away the Thai crackers were ok and the delivery driver very polite. This is not thai as we know it !!!!

Los problemas son que el plato de pollo pesaba 42 c y el plato de cerdo 40 c en la entrega. [Tengo una sonda de temperatura] Llamé al restaurante y la señora se disculpó y me ofreció un reembolso o una nueva entrega. Mi hija y yo habíamos tenido turnos de 12 horas y teníamos tanta hambre que decidimos calentar ambas comidas en el microondas. Sentí la necesidad de decirles que la comida estaba tibia para que otra persona desafortunada no recibiera una comida decepcionante. SIN EMBARGO. . . . al calentar el plato de fideos con pollo, estaba bien, pero no tan bueno como otros platos tailandeses para llevar. En cuanto al cerdo [había aproximadamente 10 piezas] y 5 de ellas eran 1/3 de grasa. En general, muy decepcionante. Si pudiera calificar la comida como ninguna estrella, lo haría. Ojalá hubiera leído las reseñas.

I ordered the red curry and jasmine from the Uber eats website and the food is amazing! The food came piping hot and was delicious. One thing that could be improved is the rice portion being a bit bigger. Would order again!

Tuvimos una gran comida aquí. Martes por la noche y bastante tranquilo, pero es un lugar pequeño y éramos 4, así que no importó. Los entrantes eran encantadores: gambas tempura y verduras tempura. Crujiente como crujiente. Pato rollitos de primavera y pollo satay muy sabroso. Albóndigas de gambas excelente. Los platos principales eran igual de buenos. Langostinos al curry rojo y cordero chisporroteante con almohadilla de berenjena Thai y langostinos con espárragos.El servicio fue excelente camarera muy amable y menos de 100 incluyendo cerveza y vino. Volveremos!

Just had takeaway delivered. I had vegetarian and the other was prawn and chicken dish. Both delivered hot and looked delicious. Both dishes tasty,full of flavour and so delicious! This restaurant is now on our takeaway list. Lovely menu and we will be back ordering. Thank you.

Pedimos una comida para llevar desde aquí usando Just Eat, el restaurante lo confirmó casi al instante y estuvo listo en 20 minutos. El personal fue muy amable cuando vine a recoger y la comida vino con galletas de gambas gratis, lo cual fue una ventaja. Era un poco caro, pero había más de lo que podía comer y la comida era, por supuesto, encantadora. ¡Definitivamente lo recomendaría a cualquiera que haya estado mirando este lugar y preguntándose cómo es!

“Wow” was my thoughts as the most delicious sauce dropped onto my tongue as I sucked the succulent meat off the pork ribs! Truly the most delicious sauce on ribs I’ve ever tasted. The Penang curry and Thai green curry was delicious too and the girl serving was super friendly. Enjoy!

Doesn’t look much from the outside but don’t let this put you off. Warm, friendly welcome. Can recommend the Mixed Starters. The only negative we’ve got is that the chicken/veg pieces in the stir fry are cut in large chucks, and could do with being smaller pieces. Found it off putting. However, would return to this restaurant.

I got a takeaway from this Thai restaurant tonight I got Thai green curry and a vegetable curry and a mixed starter! The sauce in the green curry was like water! The chicken was like real cheap and rubbery! The mixed starter was soggy and you could tell it was all very cheap! I would never give a bad review about anywhere but this was the worst takeaway I have ever got for £30!!!

Staying over in York for the marathon, we decided to sample this restaurant and we were rewarded with lovely, authentic Thai cuisine. Don't be put off by the exterior which suggests it might be just a takeaway - it's not and it has a few tables for you to sit down and enjoy a thoroughly delicious evening meal. Be prepared to take cash as they weren't accepting cards.

Just outside the the city walls but easily accessible. Wife went for the lunch menu incredible value and tasty, I however had a selection of nibbles which was no problem for them. Couldn’t fault it.

First time at the monkey and dog even though we are very local. The restaurant is very busy so best to book a table, it's very small only seats 16, but offers takeaways as well. The food is very good, good portion sizes all cooked with very fresh ingredients and good value too. Highly recommend for quick no fuss food and service in cosy relaxed atmosphere.

A cute little place, with some tasty dishes served. However, a vegetarian tucking into the Tom Yum soup to find chunks of chicken was not to our liking. Shame

I can't say what authentic Thai food is as I've never been to Thailand so if a Thai restaurant in York is as close as you're going to get, this place is as good as any. I had chicken satay followed by chicken pad Thai. It came with three massive bonus prawns that I'm fairly certain weren't on the menu but don't quote me on that. It was all absolutely delicious and I would not hesitate to go back for lunch sometime. My Dad ate steamed dumplings and a chicken curry... I'm ashamed I can't remember, it was only 2 hours ago. But he certainly enjoyed it and it looked a jolly large plate of food. To save messing around at lunch time, both your starter and main arrives on the same plate. £22 for two two-course meals, one beer and one tonic water was fantastic value (he paid) (or rather, pays. Thank you dad xx). My Dad has been on an evening but with only 8 tables, there's not a great deal of atmosphere but for a lunchtime, who cares! When we entered, there were three workmen/labourers, peculiarly sat at three separate tables, one of whom on leaving thanked the chef in Thai which was impressive and a pretty good sign. After they left they were replaced by four civil servants for something like an office meeting (been there, done that). And then my father and I, gentlemen of leisure, as it were. Excellent food , and I look forward to eating there again!

Quick, friendly service. Couldn’t fault this place at all.

Great food and service. Parking is in the local car park after 6pm is £2. Small kitchen so everything is cooked to order.

We have previously had takeaways and always really enjoyed them. Visited for a birthday celebration with a party of 6, food was excellent.A wide choice for vegetarians and a vegan in the party. One member of the party had sea bass and another had an extremely spicy pork dish. Food is excellent value, drinks a bit pricey

I was really disappointed with my padthai takeaway tonight. The peanuts were stale and it tasted just warmed up, not fresh. I ordered prawn tempura too which was average but very stodgy batter... Really poor.

We visited York for few days ago. We looked for dog friendly restaurant and came across this one it was pure luck. Food was excellent. Chicken Green curry and prawn asparagus were delicious. Ann who was our waitress was really friendly and our dogs loved the steamed rice. One of best thai restaurants I have been.

this is by far the best Thai food in York. You can just tell the ingredients are all fresh and they clearly take pride in their dishes . Had the panang curry , massamam and a guay tiew kih mow , so nice , could eat this every day !! You wont be disappointed

Certainly not your usual greasy takeaway fried food. This is how you imagine real Thai meals are. Food you could eat every day.

Absolutely love the Yellow Curry. Its to die for! The Pad Thai is also very good. Sticky rice is a must! We order it every 2 weeks!

Just had a meal here tonight. The food and service was fantastic, and the atmosphere was wonderful.

We have eaten at the Monkey and the Dog on four occasions and have never been disappointed. All the food we have tried has been fresh and flavousome. Prices are very good and the staff very helpful. If something isn't on the menu then every effort wil be made to make it on request. It is a small and cosy establishment . We will certainly be back.

We thoroughly enjoyed our Thai here, amazing and fresh and great gluten free options - even gluten free tempura!
