We had lunch here today, delicious sandwiches, toasted sandwiches, lovely fresh cakes and the best scones we have had in Cornwall so far. There is inside and outside seating, although it gets very busy, you choose at your table and then order at the counter. The service was helpful and friendly, and we all cleared our plates! What a lovely setting. Friendly staff, enjoyable food, very busy. But! So many trays of dirty crockery and cutlery left uncleared on so many tables. I cleared three trays piled high from the only table with space to sit. A shame, as it rather took the edge off of the experience.

Lovely cafe in Penlee House. Very friendly staff and fresh, tasty food. The cafe does get rather crowded so on some of our visits we have not found a table. Pity they don't have a larger table where you can share as often solo or couples hogging a table for four. Staff are friendly, food is simple but good. Most recently had a spinach and squash soup which was a bit over the top with the pepper. Bread is decent and cakes are good too. Outdoor seating for warmer weather. A dog was eluding its owner on our last visit and scurried under all the tables. I helped to catch it, some people in there not too happy especially when I nearly knocked someone's teatray over. You have to queue at the counter for service which can be a bit of a bind, as it seems to be very slow and it can get a bit congested

It's been a while since I last visited, but the cafe has not changed. It was, however, a delightful surprise that the prices remain very very reasonable. Most places in Penzance are now charging £9 - £10 for a sandwich. My friend and I both had absolutely delicious prawn sandwiches, absolutely loaded with prawns, for £7.75 each. The setting is delightful, we sat outside in the shade surrounded by trees and enjoyed watching the world go by! A definite gem.

There is a lot to recommend about this cafe but if you arrive for lunch, we suggest that you arrive in good time. The cafe is small and cramped and we arrived at 12.15 in time to claim the last available table (mind you it was half-term!). Aspiring diners after this were having to wait for a table to come free. It was pouring with rain as well so no opportunity to eat outside. The food offering is high quality and a bit more adventurous than the average cafe. Cakes are excellent. If you like builders tea great, otherwise ask for extra hot water. The milk jugs are too small so we had to return to the counter to request extra milk when it ran out.Service was pleasant and, given the number of customers, was relatively fast. Overall the experience was good and with the added bonus of visiting the art exhibition in the adjacent gallery.

We stopped here around 4 in the afternoon for a cream tea after walking around Penzance. We had been looking for a place that was a little less crowded than what you may find in Market or Chapel street and this was a nice little shady bit spot; though still crowded from the visitors to the museum. We were keen to find a lovely cafe in the sun and found the Orangery to be exactly what we were looking for.We sat outside in the sun after ordering and enjoyed the warmth. To our dismay one of the staff came out and put an awning over the outside area. Our warm day turned into a cold lunch. We asked why and was told it was due to a rogue seagull. Having lived in Penzance all my life I don’t feel a single naughty bird should result in a large number of customers being put in the cold shade. If the grumbles and moans were listened to then I’m sure the seagull would have seemed less of a problem compared to being cold. Please seek another solution to the seagull such as ropes with bunting that other places use.I will probably be back as the food was lovely but only if I know that I’m not going to be pushed into the shade again

This little cafe is popular, so popular that it is usually full of customers who are not visiting the gallery. We have used it on several occasions, when viewing exhibitions, and it offers a good range of simple light lunches. On this occasion however, things went wrong and my gluten free toasted sandwich looked as though it was made from the same bread as my husband's wheat filled one. We were lucky. Visited mid February and were able to sit outside in the sun and not feel cold, even took my coat off!You had to queue to order food and given a thing with your number on it. Very good service. The food was excellent and seems to be cooked on the premises, not mass catering which is microwaved. This means that items can run out. generous helpings and that is a gannet speaking! Acceptable wines and bottled beers available. We went back for a pudding which was a freshly baked crumble just out of the oven - it was not there when we ordered our main course. Also ordered a pot of tea at the same time. This was all delivered within minutes. The service was efficient and cheerful. We will certainly be back. i imagine that it could get busy being so good and reasonable as there is not much else in Penzance to compare. There was a table nearby with two very young children and unfortunately one of them dropped a glass. This is a very attractive light-filled cafe adjacent to Penlee Museum and Gallery with a sunny terrace and delicious home-made food. We went for a very late breakfast and only had room for some excellent coffee and truly delicious cheese scones -just out of the oven. I was very tempted by what I saw coming out of that kitchen for lunch and will be back: generous helpings of home-made soup and salads, nothing special on the surface but they looked really fresh and gorgeous. We visited for lunch, having previously done so a year or two ago. Comparing the two occasions, the food now on offer is far superior - for example, the crab sandwich (with salad, etc) was stuffed full of delicious white crabmeat, and others of us were pleased with their choices - overall, very good. On this occasion, we sat out in the (briefly appearing) bright sunshine and really enjoyed the experience. The Penlee gallery, of which the cafe is a part, is well worth a visit, especially if you're keen on - or even curious about - the Newlyn School of artists. Newlyn itself is about a mile down the road, and also sports a very good gallery! The Morrab Gardens, close to Penlee but inadequately sign-posted, is well-planted and maintained - mostly with shrubs and trees - worth an after-lunch stroll, even without much sun.

Turned up at 1430 on a Sunday, 30 mins before they close (1.5 hrs before Google says they close!) Greeted by empty display counters, a grumpy lad serving saying "we're open but close soon" I asked what cakes they have and he said "they're in the fridge, what would you want" .... Um how do I know? I can't see what you have! He begrudgingly went to the fridge to read out what they have, and served it in takeaways to make it clear we weren't welcome. I'm all for clearing away toward the end of a shift... I work in hospitality too... But if you're serving for another 30 mins I really don't think the display cabinet should be tidied away at that point. And servers shouldnt be visibly annoyed that you've turned up. Also the brownie and cookie were stale. A shame, I've loved fees over the years but this really ruined my experience.

An excellent choice for our lunch with friends. Beautifully appointed and a lovely lounge area on arrival which is ideal for pre-lunch drinks and menu browsing. The menu was excellent and we were able to have some starters as mains and vice versa to accommodate our appetites. The food was fantastic and very good quality. One of our group commented that the mussels were possibly the best he had ever tasted. A good selection of beers, wines and spirits accompanied the menu perfectly and we had a thoroughly enjoyable lunch.
