The Orange Tree Cafe/Restaurant in The Vale of Glamorgan

Observation: Not comfortable with dogs in the restaurant area. Staff appearance and hand cleanliness needs to be much improved.

We went for a family members birthday breakfast. The restaurant was extremely busy but the lovely young lady pushed 2 tables together to fit us all in. Waitress service at the table and all was fine. The food took a while but they were busy. The eggs benedict were stone cold we really should of sent them back as 3 of us had this and they were all cold. At £11 each they were awful I had a nicer egg benedict at wetherspoons. The full English breakfast and the pancakes all looked nice and were enjoyed by the family they said they were hot ! It was just the eggs benedict I would not recommend ! Really wish we'd said something at the time.

We had to wait to be sat down yet there were loads of table available. We arrived before the 11:30 cut off time for breakfast but because they have one person doing the orders, it was ridiculously slow. Which led to us being told we couldn’t have breakfast. Then waiting for drinks took an overly long time and to top it all off? You have to go and pay yourself at the till. What is the point of having table service? If you still have to go up to the counter to pay? It would logically make more sense to just go up to the counter, order your own food and pay all under the one. There was no apology from the staff for the wait, and no alternatives offered when they said we couldn’t have breakfast. Very bad customer service.

Visit regularly for lunch. Every meal and service has been excellent. My son loves the burgers. It’s always busy which is a recommendation on its own. Fresh food and very reasonable priced. Had the house salad a few times as a side, large portion, fresh and very reasonable price. My favourite is the grilled cheese & beef brisket sandwich. Please bring the truffle fries back 😀

Staff member at the till misunderstood our coffee order (2 double expressos) and was extremely abrasive. Training definitely required.

A family special birthday brunch somewhat ruined by pedantic unsympathetic attitude that refused to serve its breakfast menu at 11.32am despite special pleading and all our fsmiky making a special trip there, and a half empty restaurant. Gets even more stupid as you can order the individual breakfast items as 'Extras' on the menu only to be told that 'was not possible' A tip for anyone faced with a similar situation - order the children's Cowboy option of sausage beans snd chips and get another member of your party to order an egg and bacon as extras to make up your breakfast. (Sorry, pedantry breeds pedantry). Pathetic customer service from a place that would be better at running a railway than a cafe that cared for its customers.

My wife had vegan breakfast which was good quality but way overpriced...nearly doubled since 2019. I just had coffee which tasted burnt and not freshly made. Not likely to go again

No salads on the lunch menu so asked to swap the bread on the toasted sandwich for a lunch salad instead, which I don’t think is a big ask. But was told that it would only be the salad that came with the dish. Considering the toasted sandwich cost £11 it would have been a reasonable adjustment as they didn’t offer an alternative. So had to sit there without foot whilst Hubby ate. Also VERY long wait for food.

Staff members were extremely rude. We were made to feel extremely uncomfortable by a female member of staff. Due to us being paying customers I was shocked and felt as if the female member of staff was avoiding us. Food is normally very good

On our visit today this cafe/restaurant turned out to be a case study in poor management. A wait to be seated, a wait for the table to be cleared, a wait for it then to be cleaned. We then noticed orders were being taken from customers who had arrived after us so alerted the counter staff to the fact we were waiting. Still no response! We even had to ask a passing staff member for menus because none had been given us when we were seated. When I asked for a quiet word with the manager a woman who was supposedly in charge came over to speak to us. She suggested all the delays must have been our fault for choosing to sit there without reference to staff. Not so. When I pointed out the young man who had seated us - the only male on the waiting staff - she grudgingly backed off. Her only defence, and that a stony faced one, was that we would have been noticed ‘eventually’. What a fiasco! Not good for the garden centre’s business to be hosting this shambles of a cafe.

Absolutely awful service. I sat down at 12:35 and ordered just a coffee for myself and a children’s meal for my 18 month year old son. My sons meal arrived at 2pm! After a 45 mins wait, I enquired as to where the children’s meal was. I was advised there was a technical error and the meal would be fast tracked - 45 mins later it arrived!!! Not only was the service terrible but so was the restaurant customer service skills. No apology, no acknowledgment that they had kept an 18 month child waiting or a mum with a young child trying her hardest to keep the child entertained. We were not offer a discount off the meal / a free drink not even an icecream for the inconvenience to my son. I don’t often take the time to leave reviews however I this case I have to warn the public of the horrendous customer service at this appalling place. Not at all child friendly. No empathy or customer service skills in fact I was made to feel like we were the issue. You should be ashamed Orange tree. If my son wasn’t literally starving I would have walked out!

Visited for lunch with a friend having been a few previous times. Our food was lovely but slightly odd remarks from staff. We sat near the fire and when we were served our main course, I asked the young girl if they would be re-lighting the fire which had since gone out. We were told that they wouldn’t as the staff were too hot. Slightly odd as it was lovely and cosy as well as warm for the customers when it was lit. Nobody came to clear our table when we had finished our main course and I eventually went to ask if we could order tea and cake. Our lunch plates were then taken away but our dirty glasses, vinegar, juice bottle, can etc were not. When our dessert order was taken, I asked if these could be taken away - table was quite small, but the young girl said she would ask someone else to come and do that. Our hot drinks were brought on a tray and I started to load the items. Again we were told that someone else would come. Our cakes were then brought on another tray but still our used items were not removed. 2 empty trays went back to the kitchen empty! They were still there when we left.

We’d heard ravings about this place. To be fair it was all regarding breakfast but we went just before closing time. Very disappointed/underwhelmed. The staff were lovely and welcoming but the place was let down by the god awful racket coming through the speakers. Something i’d expect to hear in rock city, not this place. The decor and the dreadful music was such a clash. It did not make for a relaxed dining experience . The prices for even simplistic food such as a toastie is ludicrous. Which is what I ordered due to the fact that there was nothing else on the menu that interested me. My partner ordered a burger and was surprised to find it very spicy. Though there was nothing to indicate it was. But it was too spicy. My grandson had a Mac and cheese and from the bright orange colour I can only assume this was made from a packet. I sat wondering where my food was as it hadn’t arrived and my company were halfway through their meal now. When it did arrive, I can only assume they’d forgotten my order due to its late arrival but it was burnt around the edges. Like charcoal, which I proceeded to scrape off with a knife. After this the taste was not great and the ham had a lot of fat on it, which I do not enjoy. It was too close to closing to make a song and dance. Too late to order anything else. It is what it is but I’d not visit again based on the whole experience.

This is the first time we have visited this establishment since the relaxing of Covid-19 restrictions ad were very disappointed. In the past the menu was quite varied but now it is all snack type food.

We Have been using this since it opened, we have lunch here every Friday and sometimes through the week. The food is of very high standard and the chef specialises in curries. we went here after sorting plants for the garden it looks very nice large sitting area looks comfortable and a good outside sitting area where you can take your dog if you walk around and through the back. everything is very expensive from the coffee up to the food. There was a queue so I joined the end. The man on the till was shouting at the customers if they did not know their table number or asked for something off the lunch menu at 11.57 as lunch does not start until 12. (this is not stated in the menu) or if their debt card was not contactless. By the time it was my turn I was very worried as there was not a table number on the table we were sat at. I had heard him shout every table has a number why can you not look at the number before coming to order. I was not sure what I was going to say. my daughter was standing with me and had noticed that a table next to ours had two menu holders on it hence two numbers so she quickly put the menu from one table onto our so I would have a number to give him, and she thought it must have been moved. Well if she did you would have thought she had committed murder. I explained why she had done it only to be told that the table we were sitting at did not have a table number because it was by the fire and that is how it is identified. I just ordered coffee as I thought the food was very over priced. The man then said is that all you are going to have after causing all this mess. I explained I had not caused a mess that if he had not kept shouting at people about table numbers and that every table in the place had a number my daughter would not have moved anything. This gentleman I have been told is the manager all I can say is that if anyone with confusion like dementia or speech problem or processing problems wanted to order something with him I would hate to see what would happen. When the coffee came it was cold and not very nice but there was no way I was going to point this out to the gentleman as I was worried what he would say or do.

After seeing a man efficiently hand deliver leaflets to Barry promoting the new cafe, I feel that his hard work was a waste of time. My friends and I were disappointed to experience the disgusting service and attitude by cafe staff. We arrived looking forward to tea and cake to be told they were closed...it was 3.30pm on a very hot Sunday and as we closed the door behind us the cashier said under her breath “don’t you have a home to go to”...

Been twice. New cafe type setting in garden centre. Very pleasant. Expecting to get a light lunch. Menu with specials board seemed promising. Portions are generous. Staff are helpful and cheerful. However food was disappointing. Nearly every dish contains cheese of some description so not much good to some one with a dairy intolerance. Second visit we chose lamb burgers. Not a good choice. They were extremely dense, heavy and difficult to cut and chew. Burger bun was flabby. Whole experience did not live up to expectations. What a shame.
