This was one of the best meals we've had. We arrived a bit early and had some cocktails in the hotel bar upstairs from the restaurant. Would recommend as they really have some different and special drinks. Then the restaurant itself was good from the off with attentive, friendly and not too formal service. All the staff seemed to be enjoying their work and understood the food. We had 5 courses with wine pairing. Hard to pick a favourite course as it was all brilliant and we tried some new flavours and ingredients. Would definitely like to go back.

In brief, excellent food, knowledgeable friendly service, £160 5 course menu was great. Lovely evening. Busy, popular with good reason. Wine selections: see below - good list. Not sure the wine flight was worth doing. More detail: smoked duck with perfect brioche stood out. Topped with duck heart/offal/truffle, the brioche which was almost brioche in the middle and focaccia crust was amazing. Could have done with a light red aside. Bean course was a light refreshing course with amazing flavour - almost veggie but chicken stick! Deer portion with a salted crust and beautiful cooking with a black pudding was our favourite. The red blend offered was lovely. Choc course with olive oil/sherry was a wonderful mix of temperature and texture - loved it. Drinks: obviously personal taste but (hindsight!) I’d recommend a bottle of decent white for langoustine/trout/beans between 2. A gavi or something would do. And then a glass of red for the meats (course 1 duck which came without wine, and deer). Port was £13 if ordered separately and was nice. What we went for was a 5 drink wine flight (£80/ ea) was something I wouldn’t do again with this selection or wines. The red as above and the 20yo grahams port were lovely but the whites didn’t add much and although I can see why an orange wine was chosen to go with the trout/citrus, it wasn’t a great wine. The kirs we ordered as an aperitif were served as kir royales at £19 each and had far too much cassis. Net result would be </= £198 we paid inc kir (royales) and nicer.

Extremely slow and poor service. Food was mediocre and some dishes needed a lot more seasoning. At several moments, we wanted to get the attention of a waiter and not only was often no one there but even when I did get someone’s eye, they quickly forgot. The meal was incredibly slow. Nearly 3 hours for 6 bite sized portions. I left hangry. The truffle was completely tasteless. As in indistinguishable. Speaking as someone who loves truffle, it was like eating shaved tofu. There was no standout dish to speak of. Service was not warm and at times completely absent. And the acoustics make it almost impossible to hold a conversation. When you pay hundreds of pounds per person, at least the food has to be amazing and the service has to be on point. I hate to say but this restaurant is a complete ripoff.

A lovely table was set aside for our special occasion and we loved the flexibility of the 4,6 and 9 menus. My husband and I had a fantastic experience to celebrate our first anniversary. The food is incredible and the chefs serve it to you with an explanation of the ingredients which made it feel really personal. Plus the wine pairing was a lovely addition. If you're unsure about your capacity though I'd probably recommend the 6 dish option - we went for the 9 dish and struggled by the first of the 3 desserts having to take several breaks and not being able to finish the very excellent food, but the serving staff were very tolerant of us and let us take as long as we needed. Sadly I also couldn't finish my wine but if your tolerance is better than mine go for it because they were very tasty and very well paired!

Visited on Saturday evening for my partners birthday whilst staying in the Queensbury.. We enjoyed the 6 course taster menu, and neither could fault any of the dishes at all - the sweetbread was incredible, and the lobster outshone the Fat Duck’s sounds of the sea, not an easy feat (though not entirely comparing with apples).. additionally the staff more than happily accommodated menu alterations for my pregnant partner. Really enjoyed the open dining and lively atmosphere - have encountered similar arrangements in other restaurants that did not have the desired effect, but this was great and elevated the evening! Similar to a few other reviews, there were a couple of occasions when dishes were presented by the chef’s, and the waiting staff weren’t ready to wait - constructive criticism/ room for improvement, not anything that would put a dampener on a visit! And hats off to the young female waitress, very attentive all evening! All in all, good value for money, would recommend, and will be returning upon any future visits to Bath!

I spent some time looking for a Michelin starred restaurant in the area to celebrate my wife's "special" birthday. I even brought her along, too. The reviews for other restaurants were very mixed, but the Olive Tree reviews were consistently good and our experience was excellent. Each course was beautifully presented and the chefs responsible for each dish came to the table to explain the ingredients and method. It was clear that every one of them loved their work and displayed enthusiasm and passion for their respective creations. I anticipated that one or two of the nine courses might not hit the spot with me, but I was wrong. I loved and savoured each one. If I had a favourite it would be the lobster...or maybe the venison...the chocolate dessert was very good too...you see my problem? By the way, in addition to the nine courses there was also a lovely sweetbread amuse bouche at the beginning and a caramel filled chocolate at the end. Also, home-baked bread rolls accompanied the three main courses. I didn't opt for the wine flight alongside each course as I figured that would be the best part of 2 bottles of wine, but I regretted not having the suggested port with the frozen cheese course (another excellent dish). Top tip, if the waiting staff suggest something, follow their advice. The service was perfect with each course arriving at suitable intervals. The whole experience was about 3 hours in duration (for those needing to plan their evening) and was just about the maximum amount of food that I could comfortably eat. It was one of the very best dining experiences that I have ever had. You will not regret making a booking.

Had a wedding gift, 9 course taster £170pp and we waited for the perfect menu to appear (it's seasonal, we waited 3 seasons) however the two menu items I was most looking forward to were no longer being served as they had been removed weeks prior to our visit. The restaurant itself was so cold I needed to ask for the aircon to be turned off. We chose the 6 course set meal and we were not disappointed. We agreed to have the dishes recommend by the head chef even thou they were not what we would normally go for. It was an experience! The lobster course was outstanding and definitely my favourite dish. We have never tried food so full of flavour and plated in such an elegant way. Staff were so attentive and alert to everything. We never had a chance to refill our drinks glass and they checked in throughout our meal. Each course was delivered perfectly with the chef explaining each dish while adding the final touch of finesse. With all the involvement of staff we never felt imposed upon or that it was too much. The seating was arranged perfectly to allow privacy, intimacy and space. The cocktails were delicious too. Highly recommend but it does come at a high price. Worth every penny!!!

Starting with the positives, two dishes on the nine-course menu (the duck and the white asparagus) were absolutely exceptional. I also liked the approach of having the young staff from the kitchen come out and serve individual courses. The vast majority of the staff were friendly and the blonde lady who I assume was the main sommelière was very knowledgeable. Sadly, a few elements didn’t quite match the price tag for us. The wine pairing was something of a disappointment - I felt the menu could definitely have taken a strong, punchy red with some of the last few courses as opposed to the succession of lighter, fragrant wines that were on offer. It just felt a bit uninspired, especially the port pairing with dessert. The dark haired lady with the glasses serving a lot of the wines obviously wasn’t having her best day. She was brusque to the point of being rude, explained the wines far too quickly and was difficult to understand. I also didn’t appreciate being left for 20 minutes after arrival without any interaction with the staff. This would have been a good time to serve some amuse bouche. In general, the courses were a tad rushed thereafter. Bread was only served after the first three courses, which was a shame because a lot of delicious sauces went to waste (courses served without a spoon). The restaurant was also very cold (air con on overdrive)? Price-wise, this restaurant equals its peers in many continental European city centres and I just didn’t feel it measured up. Bath has a fantastic restaurant scene, but after a few days of great meals in small, independent restaurants, I was expecting something more from The Olive Tree. I hate to sound overcritical but when you pay over EUR 800 for a meal out for two, you really pay attention to details.

I changed the rating of your restaurant from two to one. First of all, I do not think that anything in my review was “personal” or “lacking balance.” I, as a paying customer at your restaurant, reserve the right to express my personal, subjective taste and experience. If I did not sense the scent of truffle or thought your cheese was too salty, it does not matter whether they are from Australia or are 36 months old. Also, I don’t think my impressions were unfounded as I also see several reviews here of customers who also thought the dishes were generally salty. When I wrote this review, I was offering my genuine feedback not only for others but also for your restaurant. I understand you take great pride in the quality of your food, but I was taken aback by your response - insulting customers who present critiques - which really demonstrates the lack of care and basic respect for your customers. I’m not saying that everything about my experience was terrible; I actually thought the wine cellar near the entrance gave off a really nice scent and touch to the place. So rather than trying to ‘blame’ your customers for their experience, please take these comments as a chance to improve your restaurant for the better. We ordered 5 courses, but the food was generally salty and the egg truffle that replaced the beef tongue was really bad. The truffle has no scent and the cheese is salty. I don't know how they got a Michelin rating because the staff wasn't friendly and didn't really care when pouring the sauce. After finishing 5 dishes, dessert didn't come out for about 15 minutes, so I was in a bad mood because it took a long time after I told the staff. As for the food, the raspberry dessert was the most delicious. 5 courses cost £68 7 courses cost £85

We enjoy taster menus and pairing wine. My family and I had the 9 course meal today and the service was friendly but not great, for a £1000+ meal for four you don’t want to be topping up your own water. The food was nice, but there were a few dishes that we didn’t love. The point that got me the most was how ungenerous they were with the pairing wine, normally the glasses are more generous and a second glass of the one wine you like - not at the Olive Tree. In summary, nice, fair price, but not exceptional.

We very much enjoyed the 6 course tasting menu, I especially enjoyed the vegetarian options (there fermented carrot ravioli might be the best vegetarian meal I have ever had). There were a few areas that pulled down the overall rating despite the chefs doing a stand out job. The waiting staff were very frantic all night, barely stopping to engage and on some occasions actually running through the restaurant, we managed to remain pretty chilled but it was off putting and seemingly unnecessary. The room we were in was cold and to maintain a comfortable temperature I had to wear my scarf for most of the evening and finally the bathrooms had an unpleasant odour and had run out of drying cloths (we acknowledge that the latter could be more to do with the hotel but at an establishment such as this I would expect them to be checked regularly) For the price these small niggles are enough to bring down the overall experience we had, but I must congratulate the chef who developed the carrot dish, wow!

Tasting menus can be tricky to negotiate but the Olive Tree has the right attitude catering to customers tastes. Often it is a like it or leave it attitude but not so here. Firstly, you can have the full nine courses, six or even just four and it doesn't stop there as there are a few variations across the various menus which they are happy to allow you to choose from. Or as in my wife's case she is not a fan of goat’s cheese which was part of one of the dishes, the chefs were only too happy to substitute another cheese in its place. I went for the nine courses which actually turned out to be eleven courses. As well as the nine courses form the menu there was an appetiser, a really nice bread course and an extra chocolate treat after the 3 dessert courses. Each of the courses are truly unique and considering the ingredients, preparation and the number of staff I believe it represents good value. The creativity in dishes such as Jerusalem artichoke, Exmoor caviar, hazelnuts and maple syrup or Islands chocolate with Manni olive oil and Pedro Ximenez are pure skill. Impossible to choose even a favourite dish from first, second or third courses. As well as the nine courses I also went for the nine tasting wines which is always a gamble and maybe if I visit again I would choose my own wine as there were perhaps three out of the nine which I didn’t like but wine and how it tastes is unique to each individual. The staff were all wonderful and knowledgeable but my only criticism would be that each course seemed rushed and with little or no time between each dish let alone the courses and the descriptions and tasting notes for the wines were delivered at machine gun speed.

The Olive Tree has been a favourite of ours for some years. It was a little sad when a year or so ago it fell short of its norm on a one-off occasion, but last week's meal was right back to the top-class restaurant that it is. Bath has no shortage of excellent restaurants. The Olive Tree is unique among them, offering its full imaginative cuisine over 3, 4, 6 or 9 courses, each one as exciting on the eye as it is on the palette. My wife is pescatarian/vegetarian and was allowed to choose between three menus over the six courses we went for, making it easy for her to enjoy an uncompromisingly excellent meal. Aside from the cuisine, of which I can only say, go there and enjoy it, the wine list caters for the higher and more modest ends of preferences. And the restaurant is very informal by comparison to other high-end restaurants. Jeans and fairly casual dress is normal, but some customers do dress up more. And the service perfectly balances a relaxed informal friendliness with the courtesy and knowledgable staff you would expect from this type of establishment. For us, six courses was perfect for our appetites. The portion size is perfect, and we walked away feeling exactly as the chef would want - neither stuffed, nor wanting more. The flexibility over the number of courses makes it easy to visit on many types of occasion. Of course, no-one would describe the restaurant as cheap, and, for most people, this is not a restaurant for every-day eating, but the pricing sits comfortably in the more modest end of the top-class restaurant scale. As for dishes, I refuse to highlight any of them - everything was perfect, and the staff will explain each one if you wish. Nothing will disappoint, I expect. Overall, I could not recommend The Olive Tree more if you're looking for top class cuisine at Michelin-star level, in an informal but delightful setting.

Jerusalem artichoke a standout (caviar and maple syrup mind blowing). I’ve read some reviews suggesting poor desserts - wrong! The chocolate with Manni olive oil and cocoa nib ice cream probably the overall best dish. And great wine pairings - from British pinot noir, Sicilian orange wine, champagne, port and more. Solo dining can be an odd experience but not here and there was a lovely buzz about the place with all diners enjoying the experience. Terrific.

The food and service was second to none, we had a very nice time the only thing I have to say is maybe improve the decor. Grey seems to be the interior colour of choice at the moment, being a graphic designer I have my doubts about this. When there are millions of vivid and brilliant colours nature gives us, we humans choose grey. The colour scheme does not have to be garish or loud, but just the right balance of colour's to add atmosphere to the room.

Gorgeous little spot. Great hospitality and service. And the food was delicious. To be honest, for a place with a Michelin star, I found the set lunch menu more than reasonably priced. We will be back!

We had the 4 tasting menu. We arrived to have a cocktail in the bar. The cocktails were very good but not in a nice glass which was a shame. It was beautifully decorated but not very comfortable. Staff were helpful, welcoming and knowledgeable. The restaurant was a little like sitting in a corridor, again not very comfortable. It’s a shame the duck wasn’t on the menu for me. I don’t eat beef and that includes Veal and venison both on the menu. I loved the langoustine dish and the chocolate lips were wonderful. I thought the staff that brought the meals and their commentary of the dishes seemed nervous and inexperienced. A couple of the dishes were presented on corn and shells which at first we thought were edible but they weren’t. This seemed very odd and not attractive either. We ended up spitting it out. Although some dishes were delicious I didn’t feel there was enough to temp me again.

After several visits to the Olive Tree over the years I was left extremely disappointed after my recent visit, concluding that this restaurant does not deserve to retain its Michelin star unless it does a complete overhaul of its senior front of house. We were left to serve our own wine when our female server/sommelier vacated the dining room for a length of time and the male serving the other room watched us serve and didn’t even think to step in. It is a great shame as the food and chefs serving were amazing but their senior wait staff completely tainted the evening. On a side note the female toilets had run out of hand towels on the first visit and on the second visit still hadn’t been replenished with nothing to dry your hands with. When you’re paying £200+ per head (we decided to pay the service charge purely for the kitchen’s sake) you expect a much higher standard of service and I won’t be dining at Olive Tree again.
