We stopped for lunch on a whim, to break up our long journey and have lunch. The Stilton soup was very good as was the bacon & Brie sandwich. I had a toasted ham and cheese panini. Ok, it was hand-cut ham not processed rubbish, but it was mostly inedible fat. It was quite revolting and nowhere near service standard. My wife complained but was told that was the problem with hand-cut ham. What, you can’t trim it? In my opinion you shouldn’t have to open a toasted sandwich and fight with the meat. Such a shame as it ruined what could have been a excellent meal and put me completely off my lunch.

A big family group of us came and enjoyed a delicious Sunday carvery. Great selection of meats and veg. Only thing that let it down slightly was one of the bar staff was quite abrupt. Granted it was busy, however, we were left feeling a little affronted.

Brilliant food. Lovely staff. Beautiful location. All for a decent price. Highly recommended this pub as it's the best around by far.

Ate twice here during our stay at Hengar. The cavery on Sunday's is a must. Served fresh and hot with a great selection. Followed by great desserts. This place is a must. You always know somewhere is good when it is frequented by locals.

Visited for a 70th Birthday meal, pre booked but had to adjust the numbers down last minute but it was not a problem. On arrival we were seated quickly and the staff kept us up to date with our order progress as there was another large group celebrating a party on the same night. The food was absolutely fantastic, gammon, curry, fish and omelet all hot, and the chips here are out of this world. Not a massive car park but plenty of parking along the road. Highly recommend you stop by for a meal if your in the area.

We came here after picking up a card a the local accommodation we were staying at and were not disappointed. This is not fine dining [no criticism intended] but good value hearty meals with well kept ales that suited us just right on a winters evening.

We went for Sunday lunch - really excellent food, but be warned! If you don't like crowds, don't book to eat in the large family restaurant - it was heaving, noisy and very busy! We asked to be seated in the bar, and it was great - peaceful, good value, lovely food.

Stopped here for a Sunday lunch. The carvery was very nice, the atmosphere was lovely and staff were pleasant. There was no wait for food which was an added bonus and the pool table area was great for the kids. Parking could be an issue for the busier periods but we were able to park fine. Outdoor area was lovely and the views are pleasant also.

We went to this pub on recommendation and drove several miles and up sharpe inclines to get there (hence title highest pub in Cornwall) we arrived and were expecting the roaring fires and great food but there were no fires and food passable. Staff were friendly but one waitress seemed to be running out the orders whilst landlord took it easy behind the bar. Presentation of the food could have been better, steak was lovely, once I chiseled through the fat! Maybe we caught it on a bad day but I myself wouldn't reccomend it.

My parents have made repeated visits to this pub over the years so I was eager to try it out. 8 of us thoroughly enjoyed our main courses and we followed it up with a game of pool. The staff are fun and friendly and I will definitely go back another time!

Great beers (loved Doom Bar from Sharp's Brewery) and smashing food combined with the charm of a truly old building and the friendly staff make this one of my favourite pubs ever.

After reading mixed reviews and staying local to the area, we decided to walk to the pub one evening for an evening meal. We arrived and were met with a warm and friendly welcome. We decided to eat in the restaurant rather than the pub. The restaurant was very busy and we secured a table. There was a large choice of dishes on the specials board however you had to get up to read them and I felt rushed as everyone was standing and reading the board. The food arrived after quite a long wait however we were eagerly awaiting our freshly prepared food so it didn't matter. My husband opted for the beef and ale pie along with the chips (cooked in beef dripping). My son had a hamburger and chips. The pie arrived with an overcooked pastry top along with chips that looked like cooked in old oil. The hamburger was a small burnt lump in the center of a very large 'buttered' bun. I ordered mushroom ravioli which was very nice and not over-cooked however it was advertised with a side salad which never made it out of the kitchen. The desserts did not disappoint however needless to say it was our one and only visit to the pub for food.

Food ok but nothing special - average taste and quality, would only eat here is passing and would not go out of my way to do so. Always busy but as it is the only pub in the village this is not surprising.

On arrival it was clear that this was not a good choice. We had booked and were meeting friends so difficalt to change. Restaurant was very full and a large number of kids running around. Some familys looked as if they had been there some time and set up camp. Not a place to go if you wish to eat in good suroundings.Food and staff were good, but wasted on this visit, which will be our last.

We visited this restaurant for Sunday Lunch Aug 7th 2011, we did get lost trying to find it but if you follow the main roads its simple. I would DEFINITLEY go back. The food is really lovely and you get soooooo much, none of this see through chewy Beef but thick tasty slices AND you get the choice of LAMB.... It was absolutly hammering down with Rain when we arrived and i got drenched the lady behind the bar was very welcoming and seemed interested to chat etc. The actual restaurant was full but we were told to go and find anywhere in the bar or family room to sit and then just go and order. The pub was spacious and we had lots of clean tables etc to choose from. There were locals at the bar which made it seem really comfy and inviting. We didnt have a desert as the Carvery was so filling. There were 6 in our party 2 adults 2 teenagers a 4yr old and a 2yr old they all ate the food without any complaints. The total bill for all the food and 1 round of drinks (a pint and 4 soft drinks) came to £54 which i think was fantastic. I really hope this place carries on being successfull AND if the weather had been good we could have gone for a walk round the beautiful church which was nextdoor.

Firstly, I am local….. Secondly, I speak the truth… Thirdly, I am glad that the prices remain reasonable to the working class family man…… Although the decor might be a little bit tiring, the hospitality compensates…… On the last at least…. This place does amazing food…. Fantastic variety and the special board fluctuates…. I just don’t think that anybody that is down earth Can fully understand what it must be like to run a business. It’s like the same goes spread all your cards out and choose wisely. I have eaten all over the world up and down throughout the UK…. And I don’t remotely care what negativity comments I read on here about the coppice…. I salute every individual under the Employment of the establishment. Therefore, I totally recommend anyone to try this place. If you are too posh to wash and this place is not for you.. And if you do not suffer by piles Then clearly, you are the perfect backside …. And as Dell boy once said…. Bonjour …..

My elderly parents stayed overnight at this charming local inn. They were, from the start, treated with huge care and respect. Staff went above and beyond to cater for their needs which included swapping rooms to allow easier access, housing (and charging) a mobility scooter at some inconvenience and finally ensuring they left and returned safely from their social commitment. Their kindness was amazing. And the room itself was fresh, clean and well maintained with all the charm you would expect in this lovely building.

Went for a coffee and was told could only have take away as it was 15:40 on a Sunday, my wife and I are both disabled and I have an ostomy and asked to use the loo and was told I could only if I buy something, so it cost me 7 quid for two takeaway coffees just to use the loo....thanks national trust

We booked afternoon tea for family celebrations. Afternoon tea was presented beautifully and was delicious. Our waitress Pinka was friendly and looked after us. The special offer was a bonus too. Highly recommended!
