First visit. My partner loves and appreciates real ale and was thrilled to straightaway accidentally hit on a beer he liked very much - couldn't possibly leave after one pint. I had half a cider and liked that very much, too. It's a small place and is on three floors. We went and investigated all of them and were very taken with the whole place. To me it was exactly what a hobbit pub would be like: warm lighting, everything made of wood, even the upstairs floor felt like it was underground and there was a lot of friendliness. I felt a need to write a review as there doesn't seem to have been one for two years.

I went for the Thursday evening folk club, which meets in the basement, which is nowhere near as claustrophobic as it sounds, but well-lit and warm with tables, built in padded benches and traditional pub stools. Place has gone down hill from where it used to be (previously 4* rated and a great little pub). Service is now slow and bordering on rude/can't be bothered. Despite showing a good range of ciders to be told you can only have Aspall draft with no reason. Walking out to go to a better pub where they're happy to serve you and have a selection that's not for display only (Black Prince)

So, we thought we would make a surprise visit to the Olde England, to see if the quality had improved. On our visit, we tried 3 different beers, all were really disappointing, & they did not seem to have been kept wellWe are CAMRA members, but just don`t understand why this pub continues to be in the good beer guide. They do sell beer yes, but they no longer seem to keep it wellSo, that`s it, we don`t plan returningA tip for everyone who reads this: ask for a "taster" for every single beer you have, & if the quality isn`t good enough then don`t buy one

Now I have to start by saying that generally the staff I see at The Olde England are great and pleasant. But tonight was an exception. I'm not much of an aficionado when Congress to beer having only working on our run real ale pubs for 15+years on and off and only one a couple of CAMRA Awards and Cask Marque listings. So barely able to recognise a good point!!!Well apparently this is the case.On being served a point of Directors Ale, one of my favourites, I retired to my seat for the quiz. After a few minutes it became obvious that the point was not at its best, trading quite tart and not being able to see through the glass I returned to the bar to tell the barman and see if it can be replaced.I was then told it wouldn't be replaced as Directors is always cloudy!! Now only having drank several hundred points of good Directors ale in my lifetime I know emphatically that this want true. But the barman was insistent. As such I then had to buy 2 pints, minimum spend on card bring £5.No apology, no customer service, no recognition of any issue!!!Simply the worst customer service I've had in quite a while.I now understand why the place is getting quieter and quieter if this is the response people get. What a shame for a pub that used to be at the pinnacle of watering holes for Ales in Northampton to me in such a dip.

This pub isn't as olde as it looks but attracts a very friendly talkative bunch of locals (and dog), along with the barman. They don't offer food anymore, but have a good selection of around 8 to 10 well-kept real ales on hand pump as well as many flavoured ciders and at least one traditional cider. Many of the beers are local. The interior is quite dark, and on three levels; I think it could get crowded on a Friday or Saturday evening.

As Mr and I were in the area, we popped in here last Sat early evening (16th Feb) to check out the new ground floor bar. We have previously visited on a few occasions before, enjoying the ales, the quirkiness of the whole layout, and meeting with friends for a board game or 2.The new ground floor bar certainly takes up some space, and after reading the notice on the pumps that more ales were available upstairs, that floors hatch was closed. So we had a pint each at the new ground floor bar, and when Mr was at half pint and I was at 1/4 pint, we went outside for a couple of minutes for a vape. When we got back our drinks had been taken away, and it took much shouting from us (and the other customers at the bar) to try and get the attention of the guy who was about to whisk our beers away from the back to the great sinkhole in the sky, with no help from the barman with the ponytail who was serving at the time.. In all, the Ale was ok, no issues there. Service tho, that leads me to give a 3 star review. Will check it out one more time in a month or 2 when I am next in the area.

We are Camra members, and 4 of us visited the Olde England tonight. Oh dear!!!The first pint we tried was almost flat (clearly near the end of the barrel), and the second pint (a stout) tasted disgusting and I refused to drink it. The barman said "oh yes, its very vinegary"!!!!!The 4 of us walked out, and in truth we will never return again. We will also let Camra know of the quality of beer this eveningThis is a real shame, because when the owner used to be present this was a good pub. It isn`t now, and frankly there are enough decent real ales in Northampton to not have to drink at places where the beer is poor. As I say, the 4 of us won`t ever return

I love this pub for many reasons. It does old country try wines and has a great range, many flavoured ciders such as Strawberry and a new one on me, a light cider with a hint of ginger which is delicious. The wooden beams and wood tables gives the feel of a homely pub in the middle of the shires. It's definitely a pub with a style that is in its own and I really love this about the Old England. Character in abundance and you can also bring games to play. Ooh yes it host folk nights and Poetry and that really is not to missed. You will fall in love with the place!

Having enjoyed it so much three years ago we made a point of staying an extra night in Northampton to go to the Folk Club (Thursdays), taking with us a friend who lives in Northampton but had never been there. The folk session was excellent, better, if anything, than on our previous visit. Unfortunately, the beer in the downstairs bar left a bit to be desired on this occasion and a number of people were commuting to the upstairs one. Almost certainly an unfortunate one-off but enough to lose a point. Won't stop us going again though.

I was staying at the local Premier Inn, but fancied a beer elsewhere. The nearest was the Crown then Sun. There were a few dodgy reviews about the Crown but thought I would still have a look in as it was the first I came to. The locals were all playing skittles (a new experience for me being a northerner), had a go too. Made to feel very welcome by all. Young lady behind the bar was lovely (the teacher). The landlady hasn't been well, but came down stairs at the end of the night and she was very nice too. Judge people as you find them... Never made it to the Sun
