If you want a warm welcome, good service, good food , clean and authentic room you have it all at The Old Smithy Inn . We decided to go off the main road and found this gem. Well worth the visit and if you are lucky enough to be there on a Thursday ( every second week so check the date) there is live local folk music . Don’t miss this pub if you are near !

Thanks Old Smithy for a lovely evening. Of particular note were the folk musicians creating a convivial atmosphere, really fresh melt in your mouth squid rings, a Deperate Dan sized 'for sharing' steak pie with equally substantial portions of green veg, mash and gravy on the side, a pork and black pudding pie, a splendid bottle of Chilean Malbec and the friendly staff.

Eaten here twice so far and both times the food and service was excellent. Very freindly staff and it is 'dog friendly'. The portion size is generous and all perfectly cooked and the Sunday roast was lovely. We will definitely be going back during our stay here.

Stunning old thatched roof Inn with loads of history. Throughly enjoyed our stay. The accommodation was at the end of the beer garden separate from the Inn in purposely built rooms with skylights and veranda. It was very unusual but great for our dog and extremely clean and comfortable. The food was excellent, and the bar was part of the old blacksmiths house , and the owner explained the history of the building . Very convenient for many places to visit.

Birthday meal with friends. Ordered together. Was not even very busy evening . Ours took 40 mins , friends 1 hour. We ate in front of our friends. Unruly , noisy , boistrus kids running amock the whole time. Nearly landed on us at one point! Had to reprimand them ourselves as parents oblivious! No condiments or even cutlery offered. Friends desert came before main. Sent back until after mains. Average food. Not gastro. Desert came back burned. Still asked if we wanted to eat it burned. Asked for refund for desert but keen to offer a different desert which was not wanted. Completely ruined birthday and last night of holiday. This place used to be great but has gone right down hill. Never going back and would urge same.

These days its not hugely uncommon to pay £18 for burger and fries or pie and mash in a pub, but at those prices you expect decent quality. My steak and ale pie was definitely of the frozen cheap supermarket (or cash and carry) variety with zero meat inside and my girlfriend's chicken burger was deep fried and worse than a McChicken Sandwich or KFC. It just felt we were being charged premium pub prices but getting massively ripped off because there is nowhere else near to go. I came out with a bad taste in my mouth in more ways than one...I hope the owners read this and realise that just because you've got a nice thatched roof and beer garden, you can't churn out rubbish like that

Staying in Welcombe for a week, we were looking forward to eating at The Old Smithy, having perused the menu on their website. However, the menu on the website is not what you are presented with in the pub. What you are offered is pretty average ‘cash & carry’ pub grub at inflated prices, not the Gastropub food we were expecting. Didn’t return.

Been here twice for food Really love this pub but the food was not up to scratch. 1st time waiting for over 45 mins and food came out cold so had to ask to be warmed up. A lot of deep fried food and the main course had cold chips and Luke warm chips on the 2nd time we visited. It's really unfortunate as the pub is great but prob won't go there for food.

Really quite disappointing. No roast beef left. Only 2 meat options. And although we may have been the last table we had pre booked. So there was no excuse for lack of food. Also no real vegetables dishes with it either. No cabbage, only two carrots and the roast potatoes were so hard they were inedible. A cheek to charge £17 for such a mediocre roast. Piss poor.

Lovely pub with wonderful staff. I was invited as a musician to stay and play at the Old Smithy and received such a warm welcome, was well looked after with a lovely room and great food. I felt very well catered for and comfortable at all times. The new jazz night is a great success, getting the community together for an energetic jam session led by the very kind and talented Ryan Truzzi, creating a really fantastic atmosphere. I would recommend staying here for excellent service, scenery and genuine community. I hope to be back soon!

The gravy was properly done and the biggest yorkies I’ve seen! And all for a great price! Will definitely be coming back again and again our new go to Sunday lunch spot!

We stayed the night and the accommodation was great. Clean and comfy. The pub was old and nice. The restaurant was one star if that. Dirty. The table was not clean. We were told by staff, "go upstairs and sit anywhere". The tables were not cleaned. Bits of food which we brushed to the floor??!! The serviettes on the tables had stains on them plus were stuck to the surface but when we looked to change table and other tables were the same. It was quiz night in the pub so there was NO room downstairs. After the ok-ish meal. Must also mention, a lead to the lamp in the corner was filthy. The breakfast next morning was delayed. I felt sorry for the server who apologized for the kitchen not being ready (1/2 hour late to apparently switch things on/be ready) The toast was delicious. Took ages to get to us (3 couples stayed???) Tea was nice but was ice cold when the breakfast arrived as it took around 45 minutes to get to our table. The sausages were cheep! No flavor on the bacon. The beans were nice, the eggs were way overdone on the bottom and not cooked on the top. We will NEVER return to this place. I felt sorry for the morning server. But clearly the cook(?) was late. The two young staff we met when we arrived were good, the staff after that were not worth it. One of them was drinking alcohol while serving?? £99 for accommodation incl breakfast, if the other two couples were happy I will be amazed.

Had to think long and hard about what to write for this one as it’s a story of 99% good and 1% bad. This pub is quintessentially British and a thoroughly lovely venue. Food is amazing, particularly the Sunday roast and the Guinness is probably the best I’ve had outside of Ireland. Where it falls down is when you get the bill. Visited 4 times in a week and three times the bill had stuff on we hadn’t had. Once I put down to a mistake, twice coincidence but three times starts the mind racing and wondering if the first bill, that I didn’t check, was wrong. First two times apologies in abundance but the third time I got an eye roll which doesn’t sit right and is such a shame. Don’t let this out you off though as it really is a fantastic pub with great food and a lovely feel but check your bill.

We called here for a spot of lunch whilst visiting Hartland Quay a short way along the coast. It was a Thursday so we didn’t expect it to be busy (especially in March) and it wasn’t, although as we sat there - one other couple ordering lunch there too - a few more people arrived so that by the time we left it was comfortably busy. The Smithy is a traditional pub, no pool table, loud music, tv or games machines. The staff were all very welcoming and we ordered a Haddock and Chops as well as a home made thick vegetable soup (the Vegetable Lasagne my wife tried to order had just been removed from the menu). All the food was tasty and hot - it did take some time to be served but then it was cooked from scratch - but the table had Trivial Pursuit cards so we could wipe away the minutes asking each other questions rather than “be on our phones”. All in all a lovely visit and when in the area again we will come back. Ps the pub offers live evening music a couple of times a month, as well as free parking for camper vans if you have a meal and some drinks.

Visited with high hopes about two weeks ago (on a Thursday in mid February), having in my case not been here for over 10 years. Went with friends who had booked a table by the fire for three at 7pm. We wanted to be home reasonably early as the weather was very wet and misty. We arrived about five minutes early, the pub was busy but we managed to catch the eye of one of the two young bartenders, ordered drinks and asked to be shown to our table. This didn’t happen. We could see a table by the fire laid for three which had the reserved notice lying face down on it. Two people, much younger than the three of us, were occupying it, just having a drink. We stood politely by the bar for about 15 minutes and then asked the barman again if we could sit down. He said that he would try to move the couple when another table became free. He was clearly reluctant to ask them to wait by the bar so we could be seated. We continued to stand and wait. I am in my mid seventies and was getting rather weary. A kind bearded gentleman, who was obviously a regular and had been chatting to us, offered me his barstool but I assumed that, as we had by then been standing for well over half a hour, the people would shortly be asked to vacate our reserved table. There was no sign of the landlady or anyone else we could appeal to, apart from a man we assumed to be the chef as he was coming out occasionally with plates of food, but he didn’t assist us either even when the young bartender spoke to him. Eventually 55 minutes after our booked time the couple were moved and we were at last seated. We looked at the reserved notice on the table, which had been turned face down, and it was indeed our 7pm reservation. At about 8.15 pm we ordered two fish and chips and a pie from the young lady. We waited and waited and later noticed that no more food was coming out. Some time after that my friend went to the bar to ask if we had been forgotten but the young female member of staff was making coffees and had her back to her and did not appear to notice her for some minutes. Finally she did and said she would go to the kitchen to see what the “hold up” was. She didn’t reappear for a while and didn’t speak to us when she did. Again she disappeared to the kitchen and eventually at nearly 9.15 pm, an hour after she had originally taken our order, she reappeared with the two fish and chips and, after another wait, the pie and mash. We assumed she must have been rapidly cooking it herself as she was gone for some time and the food was, to say the least, underwhelming. There was no apology or checking on whether we needed anything or if we were enjoying our food. We finished eating at about 9.40 pm and went to pay the young man. (We even had to wait by the bar for over 5 minutes to do this!) Amazingly there was again no apology for leaving us standing waiting nearly an hour for our booked table or for the overlooking of our food order. So finally, almost three hours after our hoped for “early” pub supper, sitting beside a cosy fire in a welcoming pub, we left about 9.50pm. What a pity- we are locals and were looking forward to sharing with friends and neighbours, our experience of a lovely evening. We have in fact had to share a rather different experience with those who enquired. We will not be back.

We arrived to a warm fire and friendly, welcombe-ing staff. Only 2 guest beers on tap, neither particularly special, but when in Cornwall (OK it's just over the border in Devon) a Korev lager always goes down nicely. The food was unfortunately a really big let down. A £14.50 burger needs to be special and this wasn't. It was served in a dry, stale squashed bap with a few token bits of salad and some cold, dry fries with an odd coating. The battered fish was well cooked, but also had the same inedible chips. The kid's sausage was so over cooked the ends would have broken teeth (same bad chips too).I saw that they are looking for staff, maybe the chef had the weekend off.

Went for a pre -Christmas mea with our extended family. We loved it all. I had a venison steak which was tender and delicious. The chunky chips were the best ever! Others had a seafood thermidor which was beautifully cooked. The T bone steaks were juicy and fantastic. The pub was beautifully decorated and the atmosphere was buzzing. The chef came round to ask how our meals were and the staff were attentive and friendly. Looking forward to our next trip.

Found this place completely by chance, as we tend to walk the south west coastal path a lot. Really friendly service and food was amazing. Fantastic portion size and all tasted amazing. Chef did a brilliant job and came away very happy. Always important for us to find a good local spot and we will be back again!

Absolutely amazing! We came and stayed in the area for a night away on the opposite coast (we live near Looe). Upon arrival we where greeted by a couple of friendly locals with a simple “evening”, a small gesture which makes you you feel instantly warm and welcome. When we approached the bar a very friendly barman took our drinks order, which lead to a nice glass of rose, and an exquisite pint of Guinness. He also advised on our food Oder which was much appreciated. Our food came our extremely quickly which was much appreciated as our treacherous 2 hour drive had left us famished. When I set eyes on my food I felt I had died and gone to heaven. A beautifully cut and seared venison steak, with a well presented stack of wonderfully hand cut chips and a vine of fine tomatoes. Presentation was outstanding. The steak cooked medium rare to perfection (normally a rare man myself, however the Barman recommended medium rare, and he was not wrong). The meat was Devine, and the trimmings eith it complimented the main act to perfection. Basically banging place to be. Pinch yourself on arrival as it does feel like heaven.

What a great Sunday lunch, in front of the fir, in a very clean, extremely friendly and welcoming pub. Well worth the trip, the starters were amazing, the roast lamb was gorgeous and the white chocolate bread and butter pudding (although purely glutinous of us) should not be missed. We could have sat there all afternoon, felt so welcome. This is definitely our new “go to” for Sunday lunch

We took a break to North Cornwall in early November 2021 and booked this pub from a recommendation. They then after a very busy season closed at the end of October but couldn’t contract us to let us know (phone digit missing probably)We had always arranged to meet a retired elderly friend (who was joining us for our break) at the pub on the Thursday who was still let in the pub and served a coffee in the bar despite it being closed ! We rolled up 10 minutes later after our drive from Derbyshire and then amazingly were provided with a bottle of red wine due to the change of closure date etc. What could have been a bad start to our break was completely forgotten about by this incredibly kind gesture !!We will certainly be back to tThe Old Smith Inn when we return to Devon/Cornwall next year to enjoy their incredibly warm hospitality. Thank you

We visited on a dog walking holiday. Very dog friendly pub in Welcombe. Lovely staff and excellent service. We ate twice here and both times were great. Jack Lou and Hannah were friendly and informative and the the landlord and landlady were warm and welcoming. They have rooms to stay in as well. We highly recommend this pub.

Shame because it was the most local to where we were staying. I had emailed earlier in the year to book a room but never received an acknowledgment. The pub looks great and we loved the idea of the outdoor’pods’. The staff were friendly but the food wasn’t quite up to good pub grub and pretty expensive. We booked for a second time when friends came to join us but although the game pie was tasty, some of the starters & puddings weren’t made or presented correctly. Maybe just teething troubles.

We received a warm welcome from the landlord & the pub was cosy & relaxed for our Sunday lunch in the bar. Fantastic food, a wonderful veggie option as well as other specials & roasts, & good beers & wine. The service from our young waiter was top notch and we will definitely be returning. Thank you.

On Saturday night we spent the evening and night at this lovely pub. Great atmosphere, with a warm friendly welcome from the Landlady and barstaff. We were with friends and had planned this overnight stay with our camper vans. Campers are welcome to overnight in the carpark when meals are taken at the pub. We were all very impressed with the food. As l cook a lot myself l'm always nervous about eating out but... l had the best vegetarian meal in a Restaurant ever! Butternut squash Wellington, with delicious vegetables and a tasty gravy. It was so good l thought l was dining at a friend's house and they'd spent hours creating this wonderful dish! My husband had Cajun inspired Salmon followed by a white chocolate and Raspberry brulee tart. The other couple had the same main courses followed by sticky toffee pudding, a huge portion, and a Roulade all yummy. It was a great place to stay, under some trees next to a field of spinach with the sun rising. They also serve breakfast if pre-ordered.

Wow what a find!! Pulled off the main road and just followed the signs - in search of a light lunch on a wet, blustery day.Found this lovely hidden gem serving the most fantastic French Onion soup served to us in front of a roaring log burner!!It couldn't have been more perfect and the dog was also happy to be in from the rain. Can't wait to go back to stay in one of the new rooms and choose from the amazing menu for an evening meal.Owner was welcoming and good company!!!!

It was pouring with rain as we searched for a lunch venue. Passing a sign on the A39 we ended up at The Old Smithy Inn. It was very welcoming, accepted dogs and the landlady was very pleasant. Lunch and real ale were both of good quality, but from my own experience it was pricey. I understand that Covid has affected incomes in the hospitality sector but lunch for 2 plus 2 pints came to almost £40. My usual village pub lunch venue in the midlands, also serving real ale and cooked to order food, would have cost £32 for 2 lunches and 4 pints of beer. That's quite a difference. I think, had the weather not been so inclement we would, post viewing the menu prices, have sought another venue. I have to say the landlady was very trusting because the Wi-Fi was down and I was unable to pay by card. I was entrusted to pay once we returned to our caravan via BACS. Overall very pleasant but not at £4 a pint a full £1 per pint more than my usual local.

Visited on 23rd September. Very welcoming landlord - had an excellent lunch. Vegan and dairy free options catered for - we were there on a damp and drizzly day so were in the pub which has old world charm and a friendly atmosphere - the garden looks fantastic if you are there on a sunny day....highly recommended all round.

We stayed at The Anchor Inn for 1 night. Our room was lovely, very comfortable. Felt very home from home. Had everything we needed for a cosy evening. Ate in the bar on the evening. Food was delicious. Especially the crumble. Breakfast the following morning was lovely. All the staff were very friendly. Would definately visit this beautiful little place again.

WOW, we had the most amazing Sunday lunch. Roast beef, Yorkshire pudding, stuffing ball, peas, carrots, French beans, roast parsnips, cabbage, cauliflower cheese & not forgetting the amazing crispy roast potatoes and lashings of thick gravy. The meat, Yorkshire pudding & stuffing came on the plate, followed by a dish of 8 roasters and another dish with the 6 vegetables in & a big jug of gravy. I dont think anyone would be able to eat everything. The servings are huge. Everything is freshly cooked, served piping hot, it was just amazing. We ate as much as we could, but there was easily enough for another 3 or 4 servings. The landlord suggested taking it home with us, but we didn't. After a rest, we ordered apple crumble & custard. Again, the portion was huge. We could have shared 1, and it would have been enough. It's a shame we don't live here because we would be regulars.

Excellent fish and chips. Plus, a pint in the pub across the lane while you wait for your order. Pub belongs to the same people. Eat food in the bar. All decorated for Halloween.

Food was excellent great atmosphere and far too much for us to finish but I tried. My youngest said it’s the best meal she’s ever had ( better not tell the wife).
