Think the need to change the time they open for lunch it says 12 but never open for 12 food was average at best and £9.50 for a sausage and chips is a joke

We chose a good selection of different food for our group of 8. The battered haggis was super tasty and an unusual find in an English fish and chip shop. The cod was delicious and really generous portions sizes. The chicken nuggets were tasty and the fish cake really moist and delicious. Generous portions of traditional chips and really tasty mushy peas, gravy and curry sauce. Good prices and very friendly staff. The best fish and chip shop locally!

I been going to this chippy since moving to the lovely Lake District am now after five years of living in the lakes l don’t think they get enough good reviews and l do anything to help my local hospitality business the old smithy fish and chip is amazing good customers service the food is fantastic and always clean and tidy would not go anywhere else

This place smelt really weird. The food tasted a bit better than it smelt, but it really did smell mouldy. The people were also quite unfriendly. I might come back only if I’m desperate. Also the gravy was cold which is my pet hate

Visiting from US, love fish and chips, good environment and overall chill. Good amount of fries and really enjoyed the crunchiness of the fish!

The best fish and chip shop in the Lakes in my opinion! The staff are lovely, they have a great drink selection, the chips are perfect chippy chips, and the fish batter is excellent!

What a find! Lovely fish and chips and indoor seating too. Good portion size. Will definitely return. Updated as returned this half term. Food just as good and friendly staff. See you next time we are in area. Returned 13th March as back in area again. As good as ever and comfy cosy eating in area.

Up there with the best fish in batter in the UK - and I travel a lot and know my fish - much better fish in batter experience than Rick Steins Fish and Chip bar at Newquay (which was fine but underwhelming) - and better than the other place nearby!!. I always make a detour when in the lakes area. Old school fish and chip shop with very hard working owners. Recommend the large fish - generous size and chunky. They also do tea which most shops dont seem to do anymore. Comfy sit in chairs.

It was too expensive. Eat in area was not clean. In fact, it was disgusting . Staff refuse to allow a paying customer to use the toilets, because they weren't sitting in to eat.

Top chippy. We had fish n chips wi curry n peas. We decided to sit in too - well worth few quid extra. 😃😃😃

Turn the telly off. Turn the radio off. For real entertainment read the reviews of this chip shop. It's first class entertainment. Read as customers relay their experiences some good and bad. Laugh out loud at the owners responses. It's X, rated stuff that will curl your hair, frighten your rottweiler, And give the auper sleepless nights. Garry and Sian should be signed up for at least a summer season with Waterstones. The only decision to be made is... Hard back or weekly editions? We can't get enough it has become our night time reading. Can't wait for the next edition please..

I ordered the fish and chips and it was plenty good. Service treated me well when I came in as well. All bad reviews aside, I'd recommend coming to this chippy.

The best chippy in Ambleside. Great food. Friendly people. We’ve been going to the Old Smithy for years so they’re doing something right.

I work in a children's home 18 miles away, there's other chippy's we could use, however this one is absolutely awesome. The children insist we use this one and I can see why. I don't know the owners name but he always makes the kids and staff laugh. They cater for gluten free diet and always do the order to the exact specification. Some lile lightly battered, some like we'll crispy batter and above all else, they all want their curry sauce and gravy. It's a great little chippy and as a staff group we keep meaning to leave a review. But after tonight's takeaway we felt it was needed. All too often reviews are just used for negativity. But tonight the owner absolutely made one of our kids nights by remembering his football team. Small detail to many. Massive to this kid. I highly recommend the fish and chips. As a local children's home we've tried them all. But this one is the one we always use now. Keep doing what you're doing guys, you are fab at what you do 😃

I learned a very valuable lesson today... One which I should have learned a long time ago, because I am no spring chicken. That very valuable piece of knowledge was that..I must read reviews "BEFORE" entering into shops which are at best not very enticing. So therefore I thank this fish and chip shop (I do use the term extremely tongue in cheek) for teaching me this life lesson. At best the chips were awful more fat than potato! The tiny portion of fish was well hidden in a wealth of oily batter. And why did they lie to us that the toilets were out of order and someone was working in them when clearly there wasn't? If they don't want people to use their toilets who take away food then SAY SO don't lie.. Now armed with my new knowledge of this chip shop (more tongue in cheek) I now know tho keep well clear. So I do blame myself.. Because the reviews are dreadful. And every review has been answered in a fashion that you would expect from an illiterate person (I'm sure they will shortly confirm that fact.)

Great staff. Great food. Best burgers i've ever had! It was freshly chargrilled, and only took fifteen minutes!! Would definitely get one from this restaurant again. :]

Ordered two fish and chips. Fish was edible but very small. Chips were re-fried from the day before. Dried out and oily. Why do you try and palm off yesterday's leftovers on tourists. Service staff had zero personality. If you hate incoming tourists this much you should put a sign on your door. "Tourists go home"

First of all I was greeted by a rude owner who if you combined to teeth of him and his wife, you’d have half a functioning mouth. And the smell that came off his breath was revolting. If you want medium rare fish with soggy wet chips come here. Absolutely disgusting. The amount of hair that was in my food, my wife even pulled out an insects leg. Wouldn’t feed this to an African village. DO NOT COME HERE.

Just had the best fish and chips in Ambleside. Small fish and chips £9. Cooked fresh loads of chips,very filling and tasty.

We love our visits to Ambleside and usually eat at a restaurant but on this occasion we both fancied a chippy tea sat on a bench. Yes the prices are a little higher than at home but it's the lakes and you expect that on a holiday. We ordered the small fish nd chips, goodness knows how big the regular and large are as ours was very generous. The fish was cooked to perfection and the chips were delicious and thankfully served in a box which was much easier to eat out. The service was friendly and prompt. Thank you for yet another lovely memory of one of our favourite places.

Only came for a good portion of chips, absolutely horrible, raw, no salt even though I asked, too much vinegar plus horrible staff do not recommend Regards 10 year old boy named arthur

First decent chippy of our holiday so far. The portions were large and the fish was of great quality. Chips were tasty, and great with the curry sauce. Specials board available for smaller portions.

Bought two fish n chips and one small mushy peas which cost £30, which I think is a lot. We ordered lightly battered fish and what we got was a thick greasy sandwich of batter with a small thin layer of fish inside. Asked to use the loo and were told this was under maintenance, which, having read other reviews, I somewhat doubt. Food is well below bar. Avoid this place folks.

Perfect food everytime . Ignore these fake reviews. People with no lives leave them just to try trigger the owner. Quality food, cooked freshly to order for every order. Large portions and average price for the Lake District. Would prefer to pay £12.75 for a nice large portion of fish and chips instead of £12 for some beans on toast at a cafe somewhere. Meal looked like slop, soggy slop. Made us positively sick to just look at! Bad vibes all round. Would not even feed to my dog.

Taking ‘mini’ fish and chips to a new level of post Covid cynicism. My fish must have been a sand eel. Half a cm wide but 18cm long. Greasy batter, chips were ok vinegar diluted. Empty shop 13 minute wait. What’s happened to British Fish and Chips?

Having visited Ambleside for the last 20+ years, unfortunately we were very disappointed with our meal today. The chips were far too greasy and soggy and the fish smothered in really thick batter. Looks like we'll have to try another establishment when we are in the area next time - really sorry! And in response to Gary's comment........the photo doesn't lie - the chips were awful!!] As a result of Gary's comments I've amended the star rating to suit.

Worst fish and chips ever, total waste of money. Chips must have been warmed up from lunchtime and batter on fish not cooked. If I could have given no stars for food I would. This is a true review, not being nasty being truthful. Shocking !

Crap. Soggy horrid chips. £6 for a kids sausage and 5 chips and 35p for some Tommy sauce. Avoid, absolute chancers cos they're in the lakes. RIP OFF.

Terrible. Poorly lit and dated interior. Slow service. Customer asked for the toilet and told to use the park. Chips uncooked and yet slimy. Cans sold marked not for resale. Not sure how you can go wrong with a chippy but this one did so on that front an achievement on its own.

Good day, I regret to inform you that we had an unsatisfactory experience yesterday. The chips were not fresh and appeared to have been cooked in old oil. The fish had an unpleasant taste, suggesting that it had been repeatedly cooked in old oil. As a result, we were forced to discard the entire meal. Considering the £37.50 spent, it was disheartening to see my children's disappointment. Thank you for your attention to this matter.

Lovely food nicely cooked but don't order a pot of tea as you only get half a cup. Also do dine in.

Ordered x2 fish and chips, must admit I raised an eyebrow when the price was quoted. I will say the chips were excellent and the fish was good (maybe a bit too much breaded batter if I had to be critical). Overall very good, friendly staff and quick service. Note: our neighbours went to the Wallnut fish&chips shop 50m away which was packed and got shocking food. Made the right choice!

Paid almost £20.00 for fish,chips and curry,to take out and asked to use the loo,whilst waiting. Only to be told they were for staff only, unless eating in. At a premium of 25%. The lady serving was most indignant and totally uncooperative. To the point of being rather nasty. After getting back to eat the food. It was extremely poor ,greasy fish, overcooked or warmed up chips and tasteless curry. All in all would not recommend this establishment. Take your custom elsewhere.!!! As for your reply. Ambleside,retailers must be really pleased to have such an illiterate and abusive foul mouthed member of their association. You really are a shining star of the community.

I’m not one to write reviews but I couldn’t go home without leaving this chippy some praise. During my stay in Ambleside I became a regular in this hidden gem. Not only was the food delicious and served swiftly, but the staff made the visit worth while. The food always hit the spot and the service was phenomenal. I wouldn’t usually eat in a chip shop however their friendliness welcomed me to give it a try. I’ll be more than happy to come back in the summer and give it a go. I felt as though I really got to know both staff by the end of my visit. Reminded me of home with their friendly faces. Chats about work and life. Felt like they were treating like a son. Wether you’re in Ambleside for business or pleasure, it would be wrong not to give this chippy a try. Spend some time speaking to the staff and you’ll have the same experiences as me. Friendly staff, basic fish and chip cafe and takeaway in a central side street of Ambleside not far from a competitor. Quantity and quality is good (a little greasy), prices - well, f&c is no longer a poor man's dinner unfortunately - typical.

Real nice and fresh fish and chips

Most expensive chips and cheese I’ve ever bought in my entire life at £6.20. I was disappointed with the minimal portion of cheese that was given. When pointed out, staff refused to correct this. If the price hadn’t been so astronomical for what it was, it wouldn’t have bothered me one bit. They also attempt to charge more for sitting in and for ketchup. No wonder the place was dead. Rip off, wouldn’t recommend.

Our first meal (2 regular fish and chips with an extra fish!) during our lovely family reunion holiday to the Lake District. We have come from all over the UK to spend time together. Food tasted absolutely fine and no immediate concerns, however we have all come down with vomiting, diarrhoea and fevers after eating here. Please be wary! Reported to environmental health. My initial comment thought to be "fake" but absolutely isn't... not sure what would motivate someone to make a a fake comment on a random takeaway establishment's Google review... As someone who works in healthcare and who understands how significant food poisoning can be for the young, the elderly and the immunocompromised, the purpose of this comment is to make the establishment aware of an issue with their food - you may have 5* food hygiene rating however this could of course be a one off incident with a dodgy batch of fish/accidentally undercooked/ill member of staff preparing food. It's worth looking into or maybe more people could become ill, maybe even hospitalised. I hope this review is specific enough for you now, but given your replies to other reviews I doubt I will hear a more reasoned and polite reply or maybe even an apology. I certainly won't be providing further business to someone who uses verbal abuse towards its customers.

Miserable staff. Cold , greasy and soggy food. I wouldn't even feed this to my dog and she eats her own poop.

Please may I strongly recommend in the interests of kindness and for reviews to be useful, that reviewers stick to a factual description of what they experienced, so that other customers may may up their own minds, as what bothers one person may not bother another. Equally, that business owners respond politely and do not use language that could be considered offensive or personal, as, (even if you are upset), it can reflect very poorly on your business and is likely to put people off visiting you, more than the review itself. A polite, brief response to a poor review can actually build your business as it is an opportunity to demonstrate to customers that you are open to, and acknowledge all feedback (it is not the same as agreeing with it).

A previous reviewer said these are ‘the best fish and chips in Ambleside’. Well, I haven’t tried the others, but if this is the best then I truly feel sorry for the locals and visitors who want a quality fish and chips meal. Overly thick batter that was still cakey and soft near the fish and the meal was swimming in oil which had a poor taste (maybe old / overused?). All meals made to order which means a 10 minute wait for fish. The lady behind the counter was friendly and polite. For £13 (large fish and chips) I expected something of a much higher quality than what was presented. A real disappointment.

I left a nice review however days later Gary harassed me days about my review so I am telling the whole story now. Fish and chips were cold and swimming in oil. We kindly asked Sian to cut the burger in half and she jumped down our throats and said...well mcdonald's don't do that for ya now do they? Another customer told them how rude they were being but they were only getting warmed up. The other customers order came ready and something was missing...Gary instantly accused her of trying to steal and upon her leaving he told us he was close to throwing her out. I tried to take the bad food and service in a joking manner however future patrons must know what we experienced so they can choose on their own whether to visit this establishment or not. So what's it gona be Gary? Should I should it deep like you told Mary?

Fine, ordered chips and onions rings, cooked to order, fair price, lovely pleasant staff, kitchen really clean and tidy.

Dont understand the odd bad reviews, portions were massive, food was really nice especially the curry sauce,fish was cooked fresh to order. Definitely get our diner here again next holiday was dam good.

Too many chips and they were undercooked and anemic. Prices are ridiculous. Cost £85!!!! For 4 regular fish, chips and mushy peas . 4 cans and 2 curry sauces . They charge £2/£3 per meal more just to sit in and your sat in a dusty area with what looks like old pub tables and chairs . Vinegar was like it had been watered down . And even after drowning the food in salt and vinegar it was bland and tasted of nothing . Whilst eating you can hear the staff all screaming and arguing with each other. And from seeing some of the reply’s to reviews from the owners you wouldn’t be able to tell them the food wasn’t great as they obviously can’t take criticism. I can’t wait to be told not to come back as I can 100% guarantee I would not step foot back in that place. Just before leaving a couple with a young girl came in and ordered some food and asked to use the toilet but apparently only customers who dine in can use the toilets. Lovely chippy. Great staff. Great food. I tried all the chip shops in Ambleside for fish and chips, and this one is by far the best in Ambleside. I got fish and chips from there twice in the week, and wow, beautiful. Great family run business.

The welcome we received here was non-existent and we felt as though we were intruding and not paying customers. The large Haddock was indeed large but it was because it was covered in a ridiculously thick batter which was heavy and greasy - yuk! Question: is this the most expensive chippy in Ambleside..?

We tried to visit you this afternoon as we have done so many times before, but your eat in area was closed, so we visited the Walnut. We much prefer to visit you, but we needed to eat in. Please think about opening your eat in area for self service. There is no restaurant in Walnut, only 3 tables to eat at after ordering via self service. Can't you offer the same?

Well what can I say! I came because of the reviews...had to check the place out..we were visiting from the US(athens georgia go dawgs!)and brought the family there. The reviews gave us a few ideas what to expect. As a former business owner, I know first hand that customers can be stubborn and rude and leave inaccurate reviews. So here goes, we came and ordered 2 fish and chips, 2 orders of mushy peas and 2 cheese burgers for the kids. We took it to go so we had no issues. The prices were fair. We had some playful banter with Gary and Sian...and explained we came to see what all the fuss was about. He warmed up to us and I could instantly tell that he was a super nice guy who happens to take pride in his work and clearly when people try to cheat and take advantage of his kindness he wont stand for that which makes perfect sense. THE CUSTOMER isnt always right after all. Fish and chips were great and kids loved the cheeseburgers. He liked us and even came around for a photo. super nice guy!So I BELIEVE we got what we paid for and if you visit Ambleside....you're making a mistake if you don't drop in and try it out! He was literally just telling off a woman as we arrived. She had tried to claim something on her order that she hadn't ordered to get something for free...so come check him out....it's got that feel of Dicks Crab Shack...where the employees keep it real! Service was slow and not very welcoming, the food was average but the portion sizes were nice and big, rather expensive for the the quality of service and food.

We ordered a fish & chips and a chicken & chips. The fish was huge for a small, good portion size. The chicken was not great. When we went in, we waited a bit to be served while the ladies on the till just ignored us. Eventually we got served, and we opted to takeaway as it isn’t the cleanest of places. We asked if we could wash our hands and was told no, as we wasn’t eating in. I go to many restaurants weekly and have never in my life been told that we couldn’t access the facilities, especially In a tourist town where you are on the go all day and hands are obviously dirty. There’s seats for waiting but they was busy so we sat on a table next to the till whilst we waited but was told we couldn’t sit there. Was really bad customer service and if I hadn’t had already parted with my money - which wasn’t the cheapest place - I’d never have bought the meals. There’s a lot better places to go.

I know you're a chippy not a fine dining restaurant, and I know bad reviews hurt your reputation, but responding to bad reviews with a barrage of abuse and foul language does more damage than the review itself, even if it's somewhat justified. Professional business take criticism with grace and poise, while still responding positively to the points raised. You'll loose more business if you rise to the bait and go on the offensive, which it looks like you are doing with most of the negative reviews you receive. For example, I've eaten at your restaurant many times over the years and always been pleased with the food and service, however, I'm coming this weekend and was going to recommend you to my friends who are coming with me but based on your reaction to negative reviews (not the reviews themselves) I won't be visiting you, which saddens me greatly. I hope you don't mind me posting my advice, I only have good intentions. Thanks, and best wishes.

Popped in for a takeaway and the food was cooked fresh to order. Staff were friendly and happy to chat while they worked. Food was very, very good and we would recommend visiting if you are in Ambleside.

Pros: I only got the chips and curry sauce and these are very tasty. And a fair portion for the price. My was takeaway only but the restaurant looked big and clean . Cons : understaffed the girl on the till got my order wrong and the 15 mins I waited 3 others got the wrong order Would benefit from a ticket system when ordering so customers know when it's ready

Worst food I've had in quite a while - fish and chips were flavorless and literally swimming in oil. Wanted to charge us extra for ketchup. Best to avoid.

I am Canadian and lived in Ambleside for 4 months and visited this restaurant weekly. I recently returned and dropped in to purchase some food. The food was always cooked on the spot, the portions generous, and the hospitality wonderful. I have nothing but positive comments to say about The Old Smithy.

We visited as my friend had been before to sit in for fish and chips and a pot of tea. They were only doing take away so we had to sit on a wall by the park as the park was shut at 6.30pm on a summer’s evening. Meal was very expensive, nearly £25 for two fish and chips, nearly £2 for a small carton of mushy peas. After spending best part of £30 they wouldn’t even let us use the loo! Fish was very fresh but had way too much batter on it (to make it look bigger?) and it was really greasy. The chips were good which is why they got three stars not two. Ambleside had a very run down, half empty feel. The Lakes has always been expensive and charged a premium but they really need to up their game if they are going to survive.

We fancied take away to sit in sun middle of village. Just as well as the restaurant was closed off, maybe waiting for school holidays season? Anyway, fresh fried cod n chips, self service salt n vinegar like it used to be. Really nice and not as expensive as we were lead to believe.

This place is absolutely rubbish,we called in tonight (Monday 5th June) I nearly choked at the price for a start nearly £13 for regular fish and chips £1.70for a tiny tub of gravy/curry, when we saw the portion size it looked good but on further inspection the piece of fish was tiny with literally half an inch of batter around it to make it look big,there was quite a lot of chips but they were almost cold,35pence per a satchet of sauce!! Don't go to this place buy a sandwich from spar at least you know that will be rubbish but will only cost a couple of quid. Jesus.

If I could give no stars, I would! Walked in before 21:00 and wanted a battered sausage. I was told that they were not doing battered sausage, I then asked for a cheese burger but was told they are not doing burgers. I settled for fish and chips. We left the shop at 21:40... The lady going through our order told us that everything was in the bag. Once we got home, we found we did not have the fish and chips I had ordered and paid for. The man that was "working" on the fryers looked like he was annoyed by our custom and everyone else's order that came in before and after us. I heard the woman say to a customer "we will be closing soon so we can't do that". If you are open, you do the menu?! If you want to close then close, don't do things at half arsed... you're either open or closed. The food was very mediocre. Chips were floppy and soggy and the food was rushed due to the people working there wanting to go home. Will not be eating her again.

Excellent fish and chips peas and curry sauce. Pudding pie yum with gravy peas. Staff are so lovely. Support your local fish and chippy. Stuart and Belinda Chester
