Plenty of space outside to sit and enjoy both food and the location. P.s. there's few deals available in store which I couldn't see online so that was an extra bonus while ordering :)

Had 30 minutes to wait for the ferry so I thought I would get a portion of chips and a can of pop while I waited. Wish I hadn't bothered. £5.40 for a tasteless portion of chips. I put salt and vinegar on them but couldn't taste that either ( must be watered down vinegar) Definitely won't be back

Been a vegetarian for over 30 years so not been to many fish & chip shops, if any in that time. They cook all meat & fish in separate fryers from vegetable products. This gave me the confidence to happily partake. My wife is ceoliac and all their batter/vinegar is gluten-free. The view from that outside terrace isn't shabby either. Full happy tummies all round.

Update for 24/8/24** Food was nice, batter was a lot better than our first experience, fish was a nice size too. Our only poor experience this time was the battered sausage looked as if it had been recooked or overcooked because the batter was very dark brown in colour and quite hard to eat. Our meal was a takeaway meal and we did not see it until we were with family at their holiday home. Yes we should have checked when we collected but it should not have been sold/given in the first place because it didn't look appetising. And the price for it was very expensive at £3. *Previous review - Food was ok. Batter was a bit over crispy but not greasy which was nice. Kids fish and chips were a good portion too.

Two locals here, we had family over for a weeks hollidaying with us. Red hot day yesterday so we went paddle boarding off of waterhead. On the way back we could smell fish and chips so immediately set our sights for this place. I ordered large fish and chips and my partner ordered the regular fish and chips, it was so busy in the shop and still we only waited five minutes or so from the point of order until being served from a small port hatch with piping hot fresh fish and chips. Might I add the portion sizes are truly reflective of the descriptions, large really is large fish. We normally stay away from businesses situated in tourist hot spots because generally you don't get a lot for your money as repeat custom doesnt seem to be the goal, not the case here at all!! Great food great portions, great service. We will certainly return, we'll done.

This fish and chip shop is primarily set up to handle large numbers of customers getting off the ferries at waterhead pier . You Order at the counter and are given a buzzer and asked wait outside so they can keep the space in the shop for people placing orders . This works fine for the shop but not so much for the customer . I ordered and asked for salt and vinegar on everything I was told I have to do that myself after I got my order . I had to open 5 containers salt and vinegar myself and reseal boxes again wtf is that about ??? I had 5 fish suppers and was carrying them about 500m so i asked for a bag only to be yold they don't do bags ..... really ???is the expectation that everybody is going to eat outside or be lucky enough to have fire retardant fingers . We had 2 large fish suppers and 2 regular fish suppers ..apart from the boxes both portions were exactly the same however large cost about £2 extra . Save money go regular . The quality of the food was good my main gripe is about the poor service to the customer

We are visiting & after having a look at a few options, we decided to visit Ambleside fish & chip shop. Parking was pretty straightforward as we arrived someone’s was leaving. However, it may be difficult to park during busier times. We arrived approximately 6pm & they close at 7pm. The views across the waterfront were just amazing! That was one of the reasons we chose to drive 35 minutes to it. We ordered 1 classic (Reg Fish & Chips, mushy peas & can of pop £13.90) & 1 Large (Fish & Chips w’ gravy & can of pop £14.90) I shared with one daughter & my husband shared with our other daughter. Portion sizes are quite decent. There’s seating outside (best option) or inside. We chose outside. The only downside is those pesky birds that scavenge your food. They didn’t bother us too much but please don’t feed them or they all hover around. Which is off putting. The chips were my favourite 8.5/10 as we had a lot of crispy chips unsure if it’s because they were about to close. I usually love mushy peas but they were 4/10. Not mushy at all, slightly cold. The fish was 7/10. We have definitely had better elsewhere, however the staff were pleasant & we put it down to “they had a long day”. Hopefully if you go at a peak time everything will be fresh, the chips will be non crunchy & hot! A couple we sat next to threw away all their fish & chips but they never complained which I thought was odd & a shame as I’m sure the staff could have resolved it. All in all, I would recommend going 8/10 as I think our one-off experience can be rectified.

Sad to give this eatery only 3 stars. We have visited for many years but over the last couple something has changed. The location, views, and setting is great and very nice tranquil atmosphere overlooking the Lake Windermere. Staff are very friendly on the order counter and pickup counter (for takeout). It all went a little downhill from here, sadly. After waiting 20mins after placing order for takeout, which was no problem as appreciate freshly cooked food😀. Our order arrived, but it was incorrect on a couple of pointers. Firstly, our condiments ordered were missing. Went back to window to remind and retrieve the missing loot. Went back to car to find they had given the wrong ones then; beans and a mushy peas, we had ordered beans and curry! By this time we didn't want to waste time and food to go cold going back again. Secondly, they had put in a extra portion of chips that was not on the order, to some that would be a bonus🤩, but to us a bit of a food waste. When we got to the meals the fish was dry, the batter nice flavour but dry fish inside. Chips were of the poorer side of quality and a little on the greasy side also in some instances, along with the fish on one meal. Overall opinion, not to the quality expectation for price paid for the meals. But on a positive note, a very friendly but slightly chaotic service by the hard-working set of staff👏.

On a day out on Windemere, this was a pleasant find. No where on the outside of the establishment does it say that they serve gluten free. On asking inside, I was told, everything was gluten free, including vinegar. You can bet I settled for the fish, chips and mushy peas. And what delight it was. The batter was crispy, the chips tasty and the mushy peas were, well, mushy! If you are coeliac check them out. If I'm ever nearby again. I will be calling in again. The only real downside was because of some of the outside seating. Some benches were very low and uncomfortable to sit at.

If you're looking for the ideal spot to have a chippy with a view during a day out at the Lakes, this is it. Situated right in front of Ambleside Pier if you're alighting from a cruise, and right next to the Waterhead bus stops where you would get off the 555 (long distance) and 599 (open topper), the location is certainly convenient. As for the food, can't say much about the fish as I wasn't that hungry at the time, but the chips were excellent. Fried perfectly with just the right mix of crispy on the outside and soft on the inside, the chips alone will be more than enough to fill you up for lunch with generous portion sizes, especially if you go large to share with a friend or two. What's more, you get plenty of outdoor seating available on a deck offering stunning views of Lake Windermere as you tuck into your chips.

A convenient buzzer signaled when our order was ready, avoiding the need to linger in the queue. Generous portions left us satisfied, and the lakeside view from the pier added to the experience. The fresh haddock was a standout, but it's worth noting that condiments like ketchup come at an additional cost. Unfortunately, restroom facilities are not available on-site, requiring a visit elsewhere, and the public ones incur a fee.

We popped into the chip shop on our recent week away in the lakes, we dinned out and had our F&C in our camper van in the small car park outside the ship shop. Having been let down by the Wateredge (no staff to serve food!!) we saw this little shop. Bit of a queue but decided to join, 10 mins to get served, gave order, paid and was handed an electronic buzzer "just wait outside and we will buzz you when ready"!! "Outside" was a "shingled" area with huge picnic tables, could not get a seat due to the many people taking up space waiting on their take away order. Tables were filthy, covered in food. sauce and wrappers, bin was overflowing so people just leaving everything behind. Quite a few people asked for carry out then just sat at benches to eat - wouldn't take much to have someone check this area and keep it clean and make sure tables are free for people who opted to "eat in". Another 10 mins before food was ready. decent portion and ok price £10 or so. We found a tiny table at the side and sat there, plastic fork to eat (even though we said "sit in". just another example of a poor customer experience over profit.

Was ok but a bit pricey but I suppose it's on par with the local area and price you would pay anywhere around here. Overall I'd recommend them.

Yummy and not expensive (unusual to Ambleside!)! We had a great dinner. The view is lovely as well :) the sitting is comfortable.

Good ole English fish & chips on a wet & windy day sitting beside the lake. Bit pricey but to be expected given the location. not many free condiments, but portions are decent, and service is quick.

Great service with very easy order process (given a buzzer which goes off for collection at side window). A good selection of items available at reasonable prices. Great chips and batter, the fish was a decent portion and nicely cooked.

Terrible service member of staff refused me and my son water at the brink of closing time tells me everything is locked up and suggests I go to the hostel up the road this is 2 hours after spending £60 on my family as we do every time we visit Ambleside won’t be going again I couldn’t imagine refusing anybody water but I guess this is how disgraceful society is today shame on that lady

Great place, probably the cleanest chip shop I have ever been in. 4 different meals and all were great 👍 thank you

Restaurant was a little short staffed but did not affect the quality of the food . We had the salmon fillet and the seabass , cant remember the dessert except that it was excellent . Accompanied by a decent bottle of malbec . Slightly disappointed that they could not make expresso martinis but would difinitely eat here again.
