Ambleside Fish and Chips in South Lakeland

Had the gluten free fish and chips and they seemed knowledgeable about coeliac disease. Portion was kinda small for for the cost, especially after a long day hiking (I was tempted to go back for a second helping!) fish was okay and served its purpose but nothing amazing to write home about for gluten free folks!

Myself and my family stopped here for some food on Saturday 04/05/2024 for some tea. I had the large classic fish meal which consisted of a large fish, chips, mushy peas and a can of pop. This was the best fish and chips I have had for a while. Lovely crispy batter in the fish which was white and flaky inside. Mushy peas were really nice and the chips had a lovely flavour. The family all enjoyed their fish and chips too. We sat outside with a view of the lake and it was really nice. I highly recommend this chippy.

Got the regular fish & chips deal. Nearly got the large but glad we got the regular size as so much for the price range. The outside space is really nice with the views over Windermere and in the sunshine was great. The fish was cooked to perfection and the chips were delicious. Not normally a fan of mushy peas but ate all of them. Better fish & chips than all the other establishments at such a better price.

Some of the best Fish and Chips I've ever had. Tasty, affordable, lovely considerate staff, and pretty views from outside under the umbrellas. Good selection of condiments available. Haven't had dandelion and burdock in years aswell so extra brownie points for that :D Seats were also available inside if the weather is out in force.

15 minute wait for a ‘large’ chips. Asked if the order was correct as the container had ‘medium’ embossed on the worker simply walked off.

Food was good, I wish they have more sittings. There is no shop around for food, so location was it is spot on. Overall nice experience

£8.50 for a mini fish n chips! Although tasty a bit over priced even for the Lake District. No need to milk the tourists.

We opted for the regular fish and chips meal for two (£12.30 pp), freshly cooked while we waited. The bustling atmosphere indicated a popular spot, and the meal was delectable. A convenient buzzer signaled when our order was ready, avoiding the need to linger in the queue. Generous portions left us satisfied, and the lakeside view from the pier added to the experience. The fresh haddock was a standout, but it's worth noting that condiments like ketchup come at an additional cost. Unfortunately, restroom facilities are not available on-site, requiring a visit elsewhere, and the public ones incur a fee.

We popped into the chip shop on our recent week away in the lakes, we dinned out and had our F&C in our camper van in the small car park outside the ship shop. Two fish and chips came to just under £20, which is a fair price considering the price of fish and is similar in price to our local chip shop in Nottingham. Would highly recommend the chip shop as the food was lovely.

We come up to Ambleside from Bootle. Merseyside regularly and stay at the John Lewis hotel. We thoroughly enjoy the fish, chips and mushy peas here. The staff are so friendly and the quality of food is excellent 👌👌. My wife and thoroughly recommend this location to eat and the views are stunning looking over the Windermere lake. We are back at the hotel on the 7th of December for four nights and really looking forward to our fish and chippy tea. 👍👍👍

Great fish and chips on the lake, super friendly service and wonderful for allergies and those who are celiac. Those in our party without allergies also had a lovely meal and it was no nice not to worry about cross contamination. An absolute winner, tasty fish and chips enjoyed by all, friendly staff, huge portions and pretty spot what’s not to like.

Bought a regular fish and chip, the lady at the till told us to wait 3 mins but ended up waiting for the food for more than 20 mins. Almost missed my boat ride back to lakeside. Asked for a refund and was served with mean attitude. Ended up leaving the place without the food. Don’t come here !! They’re probably racist.

Asked for a large fish and chips and received what looked less than 6oz of fish about 2cm thick and a whole huge heap of chips for £10.90. It was like I had asked for extra chips! The batter was like what you would get out of a frozen packed cardboard boxed fish, which was odd as a couple before me asked for scraps and I was sure they said we don't do scraps. Have fish virtually every Friday from variety of places, but this one was definitely bottom of the pile. Disappointed :(

we ordered regular fish and chips for two people and it was cooked whilst we wait. The place was busy which is always a good sign and the food was delicious. They give you a buzzer that tells you when its ready so no need to hang around in the queue.

Chips were quite tasteless and the fish was a bit fishy. The fish and chips were below average. The location of the shop was great .

Beautiful fish & chips ! Freshly cooked to order. You get a little buzzer which when ready goes off and you collect at the side hatch. These aren't sat under heat lamps ready to serve, items are freshly cooked so please expect a short wait. We'll worth it !

Lovely chips, best chippy I've had in a long while. Well priced too. Lovely view out of the lake to eat or walk from. Would recommend.

My partner Lisa has coeliac disease and we were told that this was the best place for fish and chips. Well let me say that any review I can give will not be praise enough. Absolutely stunning food and 100% safe for coeliac. Everything was cooked to perfection and good portion size as well. Fantastic food.

The fish and chips in my opinion are not that nice. It was all a bit tasteless and the batter was chewy. People were queuing out the door for it, but I wish we had saved our money and not bothered.

Where to start the fish look like it had been hit with a steak hammer was very small and flat about 6inches in length and you would expect flaky white cod, not here and the jumbo sausage wasn’t even battered for the price they were charging , portions very small and not like pictures on website. Never go again.

Might be the best fish I've had at a chippy. Deliciously meaty fish and crisp, fresh batter.

Service was very fast even though there were a few customers. Main thing for us was that they use vegetable oil and there is no beer in the fish batter. The large portion was enough for 2 people as a quick lunch.

Having been let down by the Wateredge (no staff to serve food!!) we saw this little shop. Bit of a queue but decided to join, 10 mins to get served, gave order, paid and was handed an electronic buzzer "just wait outside and we will buzz you when ready"!! "Outside" was a "shingled" area with huge picnic tables, could not get a seat due to the many people taking up space waiting on their take away order. Tables were filthy, covered in food. sauce and wrappers, bin was overflowing so people just leaving everything behind. Quite a few people asked for carry out then just sat at benches to eat - wouldn't take much to have someone check this area and keep it clean and make sure tables are free for people who opted to "eat in". Another 10 mins before food was ready. decent portion and ok price £10 or so. We found a tiny table at the side and sat there, plastic fork to eat (even though we said "sit in". just another example of a poor customer experience over profit.

Long queue however the food came freshly prepared. Lack of vegetarian options sadly.

This is such a lovely place. Great view of Lake Windermere, super lovely staff and the best chips I’ve had in a long while. Will be back when I visit Lake District again :)

Well organised, busy fish and chip shop. Better value compared to others in the area. Staff were really helpful and friendly. Excellent queuing and pickup system. Good sized portions. The fish and batter were slightly different to what I am used to - nothing wrong with it, just not my favourite. Gorgeous location overlooking Windermere. The evening sunshine made it feel like a proper treat to be there. I will be back.

I can not fault this place other than she said it was all gf but the gravy amd curry sauce. But other than that the fish was beautiful and the peas, best peas ive ecer had! 1st time visiting the lakes amd because my boyfriend has a dairy and gluten intolerance we have to always pre book or look at where we can eat. I saw that this place did gluten free fish and chips and was only walking distance from our hotel, I was like perfect! It was nice to sit outside and look at the view of the water! It's a shame we live 3 hours away haha if you are down at the lakes, defo visit this place, you won't be disappointed!

OK ,nothing special there wasn't a service you collect your food when it's ready,put waste in the bin and put tray with the others. chips rather greasy but nice fresh fish

Place was crowded. Fish was really nice and crisp. Great food and great area.

Wasn't too busy when we got there, staff were friendly and were served quickly. Food was collected from a side hatch outside by the seating area and was hot and seemed fresh. Was ok but a bit pricey but I suppose it's on par with the local area and price you would pay anywhere around here. Overall I'd recommend them.

Yummy and not expensive (unusual to Ambleside!)! We had a great dinner. The view is lovely as well :) the sitting is comfortable.

Great service with very easy order process (given a buzzer which goes off for collection at side window). A good selection of items available at reasonable prices. Great chips and batter, the fish was a decent portion and nicely cooked.

Terrible service member of staff refused me and my son water at the brink of closing time tells me everything is locked up and suggests I go to the hostel up the road this is 2 hours after spending £60 on my family as we do every time we visit Ambleside won’t be going again I couldn’t imagine refusing anybody water but I guess this is how disgraceful society is today shame on that lady

The food was nice, but the wait was forever. They have a pager service. You order your food and given a pager. When the pager goes off you collect your order from an outside window. We waited 20 minutes for fish and chips

Had large fish and chips today they absolutely gorgeous and best had in a long time when I am in Ambleside again I will definitely be coming here again the staff were very friendly look after my need and look over the lake is a it’s a picture postcard thanks again

The fish portion was tiny, the batter like cardboard, the chips soggy. Worst fish and chips I’ve ever eaten. £9.80 a portion! Total rip-off.

Great food, served hot and the fish is fresh. It’s got an outdoor seating area with a lovely view, overlooking Windermere. Very good value for money, as well.

The restaurant is situated near the lake which is great. They don’t have sit down, you receive the order in a take away container and then you could sit down. The fish itself was really good it’s fresh haddock. However, I feel like you should not pay for ketchup or sauce when you pay for a dish. So that was disappointing, you can purchase a small tomato sauce. Also they don’t have any toilets so you have to go somewhere else and the public ones you have to pay to enter.

Popped in here for a late lunch as we came to see Lake Windermere. Great menu to chose from. Placed our order and sat outside. We collected our food and sat under the umbrella whilst it rained. Food was lovely and hot and great portion sizes. We actually couldn’t finish it all.

Maximum profit , Minimum Quality ... Fish and chips was not the best . The fish was very small and I've seen mini fish specials bigger than this , and it wasn't the nicest for the pleasure of £9.40 . We have eaten from a few local establishments that are way above your standard... and for a tourist attraction, you have definitely let the area down .

I left feeling humiliated angry and upset with the way the women behind the counter dealt with me and my friends (short hair, approximately age over 50, heavy build). She was huffing and puffing as i asked her to get me a classic meal instead of just fish and chips which i mistakenly said a few seconds earlier. I was actually afraid to ask her for a can of coke i was that shaken by her attitude, i am not sure if its certain people she is like that with or with everyone but all 6 members of my group felt the same. I haven't felt such awful behaviour from a cashier in all my life in this country until yesterday. She just looked us like dirt when all the time I was saying please and thank you she just literally threw the change at me. Please avoid this place if you are a minority unless you want to feel like a second class citizen.

My wife and I had our dogs with us and it had been raining heavily, so we didn’t want to bring them into a sit down restaurant. We were close to Ambleside and decided to give fish and chips a try. We both had fish and chips, but I had the large version. The mushy peas were tasteless, the portion of chips was small, and the batter on the fish was too thin, with little taste. I ate it all because I was hungry, and I’ve certainly had worse. If I lived locally, I’m pretty sure that I would not return and would be able to find better close by. Average says it all really.

Been a few times to Ambleside and often have lunch out. What a find right on the Marina. A little gem. Such tender fish in a light and crispy batter and crispy golden chips were absolutely delicious. Some can be a little greasy but this was definitely the finest, tastiest I’ve had in a while. Just wish I’d taken a photo before I devoured the lot.

Very nice food, all the staff lovely, chatty and very helpful. Food bit pricey but considering where it is its not unexpected. Been a few times and will definitely go again.

Absolutely lovely spot by the lake. But a chippy that bad wouldn't last long any where near me, honestly the worst we've ever eaten. I can only think the good reviews are tourists who've never had fish and chips. Everyone in the party agreed. Sloppy and tasteless batter, small and chips weren't great. It was busy....maybe it would be better if it was quiet. But certainly wouldn't go back.

An okay place for fish n chips. I ordered a large fish n chips which was actually quite small so even checked at the service counter if they accidentally gave me their regular. The guy told me the fish size is by weight and they have indeed given me the large one. It's not even a chunky fillet of fish. Perhaps a rip off due to the tourist area. It's an average tasting fish as well so nothing standing out.

Excellent, freshly cooked, crispiest thin batter and tasty chips. Very popular so arrive well before 7pm closing time. I queued & waited last night for quite a while but in the evening sun and with a beautiful view, it was no problem at all!

We love a good fish and chips. The service is great. The fish is fresh and chips good baked in clean oil. Portions are large and satisfying. Beautiful views of the lake and surrounding area of the pier.

Just picked up our food from here. Had an encounter with the rudest server ever. We ordered twice (as we were paying separately) but the lady at the counter put both orders on the same pick-up beeper. While picking up the food, one of the orders was missed out. While liaising with the person serving us, a lady barged into the conversation and started shouting … My sister and I are still baffled! Needless to say, the food is great. Next time, maybe listen to your customers before making assumptions.

You get what you pay for, had a descent portion of chips. Nice and fresh.

Very busy when we visited but a really good ordering system in place. Order inside and get a beeper to tell you when your order is ready to collect from the outside hatch. Didn't wait too long for food but the queue took a while for ordering. Some seating outside and people coming out regularly to clear away rubbish and replenish salt and vinegar etc. No toilets on site but there are some just down the road. Kids meals were good value for money and decent fish pieces!

Really nice little chippy with an amazing view. Staff were very helpful answering our questions about intollerances and dietary restrictions. All food is cooked in vegetable oil, with chips in one frier and meat in another which is great for vegetarians/vegans, however there was no options for vegetarians other than chips, perhaps a cheesy or even a quorn sausage might be a nice extra to add on the menu. Food was served pretty quickly which was nice considering how busy it was.

Nice fresh fish and chips served very quickly. Batter much thicker than we are used to or prefer but this is just personal choice. Fish itself was chunky, white and dry rather than greasy. Lovely setting with seating outside. Much quieter than we expected given...

Simple no nonsense fish and chips, fish cakes and seating. They have a real good way of telling you the foods ready, you get a red wifi disc that flashes telling you to come to the serving hatch 🙂

Overall you had a good quantity of food .the food was lacking quality and prices didn't reflect on the quality either . Chips had a bad aftertaste cheese was lovely the only saving grace to a OK meal.

First class fish and chips, probably some of the best, do not get confused with other fish and chip shops in Ambleside. This is the one down by the ferry.

First class, fish and chips (for seven people) we all agreed that they were some of the best we have ever had. Reading some of the reviews from last year we thought they have got the wrong place, maybe one of the chip shops in...

Everything was very nice, I would have preferred to pay slightly less but it was otherwise excellent.

Excellent fish & chips, wonderful folks who served us. No issues with Halal as its fish and the batter is without beer. Had a good conversation with the kind folks at the shop and was surprised with a cup of hot chocolate, on the house! View is superb, location is good (fronting the Ambleside Pier).

Gluten-free fish and chips. What more needs to be said? Even the vinegar, though malty, is GF too. Plenty seating outside with views of the lake.

The chips were dreadful, the taste was of either old oil or a new one which wasn't as per normal.. The sausage was good, the chips awful. I visited on 23 December 2023.

Not eaten here yet but boosting reviews so hopefully more people come here rather than the old smithy after seeing how rude Gary is when responding to reviews. Extremely foul language etc. Good customer service at Ambleside fish and chips clearly, by the comments. Well done!

Great fish. All gluten free which is important for my wife. Michelle behind counter was very informative, friendly and helpful.

Lovely chip shop to have lunch with a friend, fish and chips for less than a tenner, great atmosphere.
