Chippy Bank in South Lakeland

As with other reviews, won’t be going again due to the rude blonde haired old woman serving. Have been once a week for the last 2 months, but will go elsewhere now. Not the first time she’s been rude or messed up our order. Easy to overlook it until I overheard her mocking me to another customer as I left. Seems like she’s nice to the regulars, but not to anyone else.

Fish,chips, mushy peas, and homemade tartar sauce were probably the best I've had. Well worth a visit, eat in or out. Very reasonable prices.

Not impressed with the poor service and terrible fish received from Chippy bank. The staff serving were very rude and lack any customer service skills. Staff were very snappy in ordering us where to stand to be served. We wasn't the only customers to be treated this way. They serve regulars ok but not anyone new. Very unprofessional and we will go elsewhere in future! As for the food the fish was terrible! If you can find it underneath the concrete mash of batter. They can't be bothered taking the skin off the fish either. First chippy we've ever been to where the skin remains. There was more skin then fish. I gave two stars because the chips were actually ok but don't expect to receive value for money because although the chips were good, they were scarce! We won't be returning

Always liked the chippy bank, last couple of times it's been underwhelming. The fish wasn't very tasty, had to put lots of salt and vinegar to see if that worked, fish also a bit greasy and they seem to have lost chip shop chips or changed the way there done? Dont know if this make sense but when I finished eating I felt it didn't fill the want for the fish and chips tick.

Excellent food, everything was well cooked and tasted really nice. Some of the staff could of been friendlier but I would go there again.

Brilliant chippy. Perfect chips every time. A lot of chip shops nowadays seem to take your order, give you a number and then have you stand around waiting somewhere awkwardly for them to call you up for collection. I find it slow and unnecessary. Chippy Bank have you queue around the shop, take your order and prepare it in front of you as you wait and then finally pay. Exactly as it should be. Friendly staff. Very clean and as I said, perfect chips. Reasonable prices too as well as generous portion sizes.

Wir hatten beide Fish'n Chips mit Currysauce und waren zufrieden. Ich mag lieber Kabeljau, aber hier ist der Fisch der Wahl Seelachs. Die Pommes waren lecker und die Currysauce auch. Sauberer, ansprechender Laden.

Just popped in for a bag of chips. Was impressed nice polite attentive staff. Clean chippy Lovely chips. But I cant comment on the rest of the menu as I didn't have anything else. Definitely go again.

Wonderful find. Shame it’s too far to go very often. It is the best tasty fish I’ve ever had form a take away. And the chips were gorgeous too. Will be back asap!

Always nice fish and chips served here, you can tell the potatoes used are of good quality,& the fish served is fresh plus the frying oil I would say is probably changed regularly which makes a huge difference to the quality. I eat the curry sauce here but I've had better. Perhaps not as bigger portion size as some other chippy's but on the whole very nice fish and chips

2 Fish and 2 chips with a tub of tar tar sauce, curry sauce and mushy peas between the 2 of us for £19, absolute bargain and tasted amazing. Going back tomorrow for more 👍👍👍

Being a Monday my usual place closeby was closed. Glad tried this as chips and all food purchased was really good. Chips were freshly cooked, really good, and spring roll was really really tasty. Steady stream of customers and nice staff.

Think we got the end of the batch of chips. Fish was a bit greasy but tasty. Still the best chippy in Ulverston.

Always been the best, chips are thick cut and tasty, not too much oil, just enough to make you realize you’re in an old Chippy.

Went in recently, £3,95 for chips and curry, chips were over cooked and tasted pretty bad.

Chip shop lunch while walking around Ulverston shops. Standard scampi, chips and peas. Food nice enough, friendly staff. Good to have sit down chip shop in the town... seating perhaps a little oddly arranged...high stools to eat at high wall mounted shelf table, large 6 seater table in middle which we ended up taking and only two of us which felt wrong to us.

Fantastic chippy, our go to place in Ulvertston

The food here is great that's why it's always very busy but unfortunately the service is slow as there is only room for 1 server they could possibly serve 2 customers at a time if they got rid of the plastic screen, I was 8th in a queue and waited 15 mins to be served. unfortunately this is the 3rd time this has happened but it wont again as the £2.50 chip portions are seriously small it wasn't worth the wait

Friendly, honest service - and thank god for places like this that serve the right size of portion (for table service) at the right price. Others take note - we don't need gutbusting portions of fish and chips at £18, especially if food is wasted.

got to the shop more than an hour before it closed asked for 3 fish, just went “i’m not cooking anything else, this is all i’ve got” but there was nothing there!!didn’t end up getting anything. shocking service, not going back again! do NOT recommend!

Impeccable chips, however I wish I could say the same for the fish.

We where in Ulverston on holiday. We went out for dinner on a thursday. We didnt expect it to be busy. It was so we ended up at this chippy. Well thank God we did. Because this chippy was magnificent. The staff where great and we got a seat even tho it was busy. We ordered fish and chips and a verity of other things. Well the food came and it was jaw dropping good. Just everything was cooked so well. Fish was a good size and very tasty. I have been to places that claim they have the best chips and they don't. These guys really do. Can recommend them enough. Glad i dont live near there. Would be there every night.

Stopped here on the off chance and due to the large queue waiting. Took a while for the queue to go down (luckily it wasn't raining as it was outside). We were shocked at the price of fish, compared to down our way this was cheap! The chips were a little overcooked and the fish really needed draining for a little longer as the amount of grease in the paper actually ran off but the fish inside was really lovely.

We decided to eat in and ordered Haddock and Chips and a cup of tea. The tea was lukewarm, and the fish and chips had clearly been cooked a long time before we ate. The fish was rather dry and the chips limp and unappetising. This was surprising given that the place was rather busy. It was disappointing because the last time we ate here over a year ago, it was good quality.

Took my friend here thinking that she wanted fish and chips but she ended up having a cheeseburger whilst I was on a vegetarian goal so I ordered chips, cheese and gravy (£5.60). Wow, never look down on a simple dish! This took me back to my childhood memories being brought up in a takeaway and having gravy chips as my supper. The additional cheese was a 'luxury' to what I used to have. It was very filling and it lasted me the whole day even after the hike to Sir John Barrow Monument and walking back to Manjushri Kadampa Meditation Centre, I didn't need dinner. Great service and reasonable price.

The Chippy Bank has an excellent reputation- so I was really looking forward to a good meal after a long hard bike ride. Visited at 7pm on a Saturday night … wasn’t too busy & didn’t have too long to wait. The haddock was very good (so it should be at £4.50) … chips were small & bitty, soggy & lukewarm…. Mushy peas were also lukewarm & tasteless. Sorry - next time will be trying elsewhere.

Delicious chips and curry sauce on a mid-afternoon pit stop that hit the spot! The service was lovely in this traditional fish & chips restaurant.

Not as good as previous visits. Very expensive for what we got. Pie, chips, peas & gravy £8.10. £2.50 for the pie, £3 for chips and didn't get many & £2.60 for peas & gravy.

Again I'm a bit surprised at some of the quite mean reviews of this restaurant. I often wonder if there's an unterior motive or - if there is rudeness involved - it's come from the reviewer first. Just a thought. We wanted fish & chips and I'm very, very particualr about my fish. We were a bit unsure about trying this place, due to the adverse reviews. However, we were in the lovely shop next door and the owner of that shop told us the fish and chips here were very good indeed. So we tried it and what do you know? She was right! It's all on the flat and with plenty of space to get about for those who need it, so no access issues. The staff were fine - clearly busy, but the young girl who served us was really nice and the food was very good indeed. The fish was clearly fresh, with a lovely flavour and was cooked absolutely perfectly. We hardly waited any time (it's a takeaway as well and they were doing a roaring trade, so there were fish and chips ready). Everything was hot, flavourful and just what you'd want in fish and chips. And less than £20 for two big plates of fish & chips - I also had gravy and peas and the better half had tea. It should be remembered this is a chippy, not a 5* cordon bleu restaurant. But if you want good fish and chips, I'd recommend it in a heartbeat.

Was recommended to go here on a trip up to Ulverston. Staff are lovely, very busy place.. but service was very good. We ate inside and was very clean. Had Fish, Chips, peas and gravy!, it is by far the tastiest chippy yea I've ever had!!, was told it was good but exceeded my expectations. I wonder if the negative reviews are from competitors???

Lady who served me was very rude… asked for no salt and vinegar and she said too late already done it! When it was for someone with kidney failure who can’t have much salt! Curry sauce pot was half full. Very rude but the food...

We have come to stay for a week in ulverstone went to the chippy bank 31.01.22 for tea and got haddock chips,plaice chips and it was not fit to eat absolutely disgusting nothing fresh and chips you just could not eat.

Awful service, incredibly rude staff. Had to repeat myself multiple times to 'WHAT'. Wasn't even told how much my food came to & the atmosphere was frosty & uncomfortable. The food was practically inedible & half it was dropped on the floor before even being handed over. The cheese smelt & tasted off & chips were overcooked & stale. Unfriendly & inadequate, definitely will not be returning.

Easy to find in the town centre. Great friendly service and the staff were welcoming. Staff wore face masks, which was reassuring. Food preparation was super fast. Fish and chips were excellent. The batter was crispy and just right. Portion size was reasonable. Some of the double seats are a little cramped if sitting next to somebody. Food prices were slightly higher than average. Well worth a visit.

It is the best fish , chips and Cumberland sausage we have had in a long while . Friendly service . Will be visiting again .

After a long day walking and 2 very hungry customers, rather than a good evening we were shouted at there was only what we could see... we were ready to order but then told by one of the servers just getting sorted for tomorrow!!! Don't mind us then. TheLARGE portion of chips we paid for was ridiculously small andcold by the time we drove a few miles home... definitely wouldn't recommend this fish and chip shop... rubbish attitude and rubbish food!!!

Had high hopes for this place after reading reviews , was disappointed being honest. Looks great from outside, 4 max in shop face masks to be worn, but watched lady put sausages in deep fryer didn't wash her hands then went about normal work ....

I grew up near Ulverston and it was always said The Chippy Bank was the best chip shop in the town. 30 years or more later I visited and although I did not eat from every Chip shop in town, I did visit the Chippy...

Poor quality greasy fish with skin on, almost cold when I unwrapped it - despite collecting it on time and taking only 2 minutes to get home with it. On collection the smell of cleaning agents was overwhelming, floors were being mopped although it was still half an hour before the were due to close. Chips were OK but I wouldn't bother going again
