We only went in for a quick snack and had to fight off the temptations of delicious cakes and other tasty items on the menu. We both had soup and one had a cheese sandwich and the other had an egg sandwich - all of it 'just like mother made'. It fuelled us for an exciting visit to Mirehouse.

Visited the cafe last Sunday with 2 friends and our dogs after a lovely walk up to Dodd Wood Summit. Lovely staff greeted us, and we sat outside at a picnic bench in the sun. Toilets just near the cafe which were handy and clean. We opted for toasted sandwiches and a cuppa. Really lovely coffee and the sandwiches were delicious, service was prompt. Quite an extensive menu here and very well priced. Staff were attentive and full of smiles. Great walk, great views, super cafe. We highly recommend The Old Sawmill.

Went to the tearooms after a tour of Mirehouse. We were a large group of just over 20 people and had prebooked. The lovely ladies served us with a variety of freshly made sandwiches and fruit scones with butter jam and cream along with hot drinks of our choice. It was all superb from the service to the quality of the food, will definitely be back for a visit. Thank you 😊

Arrived at the doors at 3pm an hour before closing and the chairs were already stacked on the tables. You could however sit in the searing heat on one of the outside tables. Would have been nice and cool inside?? Did not stay. Apparently no menu available apart from drinks.

Eating out in the Lake District can be pricey, so for me value for money is important. This teashop opposite Mirehouse & Gardens was excellent - the Ploughman's Lunch (£9.99) I had featured a really good variety of items while my wife's pea and watercress soup was plentiful with sandwiches - if you wanted them -was excellent. Staff was also friendly and very helpful, happy to meet dietary requests.

Very average food at London prices. We expect to pay more when visiting remote places in the lakes so we weren't put off by the prices but the food was distinctly average. We ordered an Italian toasted chibatta but the only thing toasted was the bread. Cold salami and a slice of rubbery mozzarella! Bog standard ham sandwich with dry lettuce and 6 plain crisps. Very poor compared to few years ago. Little effort to serve good food but know they will get trade as there's nowhere else for miles. Take a packed lunch when visiting Dodd Wood!!

This used to be a fantastic little cafe. Still cosy with log burner. However, the staff are not the friendly folk that used to be there and the food was very poor. The only good part was the poached eggs which were cooked to utter perfection, which was great but for the fact that they were still swimming in water and, therefore, so was the bread soaking wet along with the rest of my breakfast. A great shame. Perhaps just a bad day.

It was lunch break when we visited and because the inside was closed it was busy at both the hatch and the inside queue. We ordered soup and unfortunately although it was very nice soup, mine was cold. It took about 15 minutes to get it back and then it was too hot to eat. To be fair it was delicious when I reheated it at dinner time.Husbands roll already had butter or margarine- not sure which added to it - so I’m glad I didn’t order one as I don’t eat spread. Lunchtime selection fairly small, but the posh sausage rolls looked good. Our coffees were nice and the tray-bakes looked good, one more for an afternoon or mid morning stop.It is a lovely location and the staff are very pleasant although seem to be a bit overwhelmed.

We went walking in Dodd woods twice, and the kids loved the walk but were starving when we finally got back so we nipped in here. They loved it both times, I think the son only came for the second walk at Dodd woods for the bacon sandwich afterwards. We did only have a bacon sandwich, kids sausage roll and cakes but what we had was lovely. One of the main reasons I didn't go five starts is the price, I paid £2 for a can of pop which you could buy in Keswick for £1.25 so that was a little sore point.

I had a cumberland sausage in a baguette. It was pretty good but pricey. My husband had a bacon sandwich which was on processed white bread - my husband said typical greasy spoon. The coffee was weak. So average food but pricey. And the tables are in the car park - no view or plants. Plus You have to pay a car parking fee to use the cafe as it is the same car park for dodds wood and the House. So not worth it unless you are going there anyway.

I visted here with my mum for a mid-week lunch after climbing to Dodd Summit. We have both been before but many years ago. The cafe is in the car park for Dodd Wodd and Mirehouse. You have to pay for parking and this is not cheap so I don't think I would return here just to eat, but if you are combining it with a walk up Dodd Fell or a visit to Mirehouse, then it's great. The car park doesn't take card payments or banknotes, so when we first arrived we had to go to the cafe to ask for change. This must get very annoying for them, but we promised them that we'd be back after our walk for a guilt free lunch. It's not very big inside but there is also outdoor seating for dry days. I ordered the soup of the day (tomato and red pepper) with a roll and a cheese scone. My mum ordered the same, with a rarebit muffin as well. My mum ordered tea and I just had a tap water. The food wasn't quick to come out but there were a few other people there too so I think they were pretty busy. The soup was nice, but not delicious. It hadn't been strained, so there were a lot of tomato and red pepper skin bits in the soup which wasn't great in the mouth. But the flavour was good. The roll I got with my soup was really, really nice. My scone was tasty (I like a scone with a crunchy outside and soft middle, which this was) but wasn't particularly cheesy. Don't hold back Chef!My mum said her muffin was nice. The decor is lovely and very warm and homely after a brisk walk. We'd have loved a cake as they looked delicious, but none were to my taste that day. Not their fault at all though. They don't have their own toilets, but there is a toilet block across the car park. Unfortunately, when we used them the water was off so the toilets didn't flush and there was no facility for hand washing. I don't think the cafe maintain these toilets though so I'm not blaming them. The food was suprisingly cheap for the area this cafe is in. I'm glad they haven't succumbed to other Lake District eateries and whacked ridiculous prices on their food just because they can. I won't eat in places like that and I think cafe's that are reasonably priced make more money in the long run. Because we had walked up Dodd Summit before eating, we ate away guilt free and certainly will return if we do the same walk again.

We decided to grab an early lunch before visiting Mirehouse gardens. I had the soup of the day, which was a wonderful combination of flavours, and served in a pottery bowl which was not a perfect circle, and higher on one side than the other. Nice lunch, ordered homemade quiche which came with a selection of salads, and my boyfriend ordered a sandwich which could have been slightly bigger for the price but nevertheless delicious.

Scone was thin and stale so crumbled when cut in half. Cream is squirty from an aerosol tin. Jam is mediocre. Coffee ok but small cup.

The Old Sawmill is a fantastic little teashop located at the Dodd's Wood Carpark opposite the entrance to Mirehouse on the Eastern side of Bassenthwaite Lake.

Stopped in for a late lunch and we had a wonderful homemade soup. Served with hearty bread it was a perfect meal. Had a great dessert too. One drawback is that you have to pay for parking but if you are visiting Mire House or the Park, it's a great stop.

An lovely little tearoom, home cooked food, a perfect way to finish the climb/walk up Skiddaw, limited menu but what they do serve is just right fine for where they are.

Went in as no change for the car park (which didn't give change/accept cards/phone in). Average prices I thought til I realised we'd been charged 80p each for 2 very small kids orange squash. Cakes were nice, coffee OK. Tearoom looked quaint but staff serving seemed sullen with little people skills. Handy for the area but I'd only go back for change rather than food and drink again.

Visited this little hidden gem whilst on a lap of Dodd wood when visiting the lakes the other week. What a surprise this stunning little cafe turned out to be. A real proper rustic tea shop, none of this modern fancy la de dah. A place that welcomes wet walkers and muddy boots ready to supply proper home made food and cakes that are certainly well needed after exploring the beautiful views of the lakes. I had a bowl of soup and a sandwich for my lunch. The lady serving me was attentive enough to notice that I was alone and changed the menu to suit my requests of having a bowl of soup without a roll or a scone (which did look delicious!) and to have a sandwich without the usual accompanying side salad. When the food came my sandwich was still accompanied by the sawmills home made green bean pickle which was a delight. To my pleasure, on the way to the counter to choose a cake and a coffee I noticed the dresser by the log burning drive sells jars of the home made pickle which will also make fantastic souvenirs! The young chap at the counter who served me this time informed me how the pickle is made on the premises multiple times a month and the jars are hand labelled and dressed by the staff themselves. For my dessert I had a piece of the phenomenal chocolate Guinness cake which the girls in the kitchen were kind enough to warm up for me and serve it with a dollop of ice cream. I also bought some mars bar cake to take home with me for tea time which was top notch. A real hidden gem that I will certainly be visiting time and time again!

We stopped here after doing the summit walk. My husband had the walnut and Stilton salad and thoroughly enjoyed it. I had cheese scone with nettle cheese which was delicious. The tea was just perfect. Highly recommend.

Superb food - couldn't have had better! The lightest of quiche and an apple pie which was so full of apple, and according to my husband was as good as his Mum used to make - and she baked amazing pies and cakes!! If we could have lunched here every day, we would have!

We stayed here for 2 nights and I cannot recommend this place highly enough. The atmosphere is warm and welcoming. The rooms are large, bright with some spectacular views and those special touches such as little toiletries for your use. The bath in our room was so opulent I could have stayed in there all evening. The dining area is quite niche you can have quiet discreet corners for a romantic evening or more open. The food is excellent- if I had 1 thing to say that was negative, it would be that I wouldn’t have a starter so I could have a dessert, I found each time I did I just didn’t have room to have one! The main thing for me was the staff. The staff quite simply made it for me. NOTHING was too much trouble, they were friendly, welcoming and went above and beyond , yet at the same time let us be. If you want somewhere, where you can be comfortable, away from it all and have excellent accommodation and food this is the place.

Sad to say that our trip there was a a big disappointment when it come to the food. We all had beef, it was dry and chewy. When we talked to the waiter, we have been told that is the way the chef does it. It is a shame that they only sell well done cuts of meat...

My wife and I went for a trip to Lowther Castle and Gardens with the in-laws, and after such awful weather we decided to travel to Cockermouth to treat ourselves to the excellent Fredricks which we've visited many times before. We started with the seafood platter / selection with a portion of chips for the young one. It's a great selection of items for fish lovers! After, we ordered some lovely main dishes, enough for 3 adults and 2 kids (1 kids meal of pizza and chips!) Lovely meal to end of evening. Will be back when next in the area.
