From the moment we walked in, the locals were soo welcoming. The staff were fantastic. We were a party of ten (6 adults and 4 children) we hadn’t booked for food but there was no issue. The food was really really good. No complaints from any of us. Would 100% recommend

We had a great dinner at this lovely traditional pub in Ipstones. It was quite busy on Friday evening & we hadn't booked so were lucky to get a table in the bar (we were quite early 6.30ish). Good beer. Good selection on menu. My steak was very good, nice chips too. DH liked his liver & onions (he doesn't get offal at home). Well behaved dogs (on lead) are welcome. Good atmosphere. Friendly staff. Reasonable prices. Popular with locals and visitors. Small carpark.

We had booked here for a meal before going on The Polar Express at Churnet Valley and we were not disappointed. We were made to feel very welcome by the staff and locals and the atmosphere was so cosy and friendly. We all chose a different meal from the main menu and we all thoroughly enjoyed our choice. The kids meals were made fresh and served hot and all the kids loved their food too. It was very reasonably priced and all plates were cleared, such was the tastiness of the food. Special shout out to Ange, who made us feel so welcome and was a real diamond in looking after us. If you want great, freshly cooked food at a fair price, get yourself to here, you won’t be disappointed.

Came here with my 7yo when glamping nearby. It was just the thing - a pretty, atmospheric pub, very family-friendly, with a simple menu of pub classics. We had a decent, well-priced meal, got served by friendly staff, and felt right at home. Thanks!

What a great find , whilst on our way home from chutnet valley . We popped in for a spot of lunch . The staff were friendly and the place was very clean . Food ordered we were amazed at the portion size and the onion rings are to die for. We would definitely recommend this place and will be returning.

Booked for Sunday lunch and very glad we did. Very tasty beef dinner and good sized portions at a very reasonableprice. They also have their standard pub fayre menu available on a Sunday. Lovely traditional pub with a nice atmosphere. Staff were very friendly and helpful. I was told by the beer drinkers in our group that the draught beer was super despite their initial disappointment that Theakstones wasn't on tap despite the outside signage. When we're walking in that area again, we'll happily go back.

Me and my partner are staying local to visit Alton towers. After an EXTREMELY long drive from Cornwall, we came into the old red lion to watch the England vs Scotland game and decided to have food. The lady behind the bar was welcoming and very pleasant and the food was lovely and cheap! My partner said the steak was melting in his mouth, so he’s definitely a happy customer!! Couldn’t ask for anything better, was a lovely visit, thank you very much ☺️

Only called in for a quick drink but nice country pub none the less with plenty of seating outside. Interesting story about James Brindley the canal engineer possibly getting wet and taking ill here and dying because the landlord didn’t or wouldn’t light a fire. May be a tall story.

Not sure if it was the fact we were interrupting the royal wedding or we were from out of town but we received a far from friendly greeting here Landlady was really grumpy as though we had put her out to serve us. One of the group had food which was not of great quality, cheap burger on a cheap bun was a side of chips which were average. We stayed for one drink then tried the Sea Lion round the corner which was much more welcoming. I would skip this place based on our experiences.

We visited this pub twice during our stay in Ipstones, 6 of us on one night and 4 on another. The first night was midweek and it was fairly quiet. The beers that we sampled were kept well and served by an extremely friendly barman. The food that we ordered arrived quickly and although it was what I would call "basic pub grub" it was enjoyed by all of us to the extent that 4 of us returned on our last evening. This was on a Friday night and the pub was packed as they were holding a charity night. The friendly staff soon found us a table though and although extremely busy our food arrived promptly and well cooked. This is what I would call a proper pub. Great atmosphere with good beer, food and friendly bar staff. Hard to find these days!

Visited with family and pub was very welcoming. Good range of beers too. Food was cheap but reflected in the quality of the food. Whilst it was cooked fine, would have been happier to pay a little more for better quality ingredients. Dog friendly. Lovely old fashioned pub though.

We got a friendly welcome from the staff and even though it was a Tuesday evening we were told that a full menu was available. Two steaks and one liver and onions with mash ordered. When the food arrived it looked great, there was plenty of it and it tasted great too. It was reasonably priced too. Dogs are welcome. This place is a bit out of the way but it's worth it.

We tried here because the pub closest to our B&B had its kitchen closed. We were not disappointed. Food was lovely and reasonably priced. Staff friendly. Would recommend it if you are in the area. Nice little beer garden which would be great in the summer.

We had a really lovely all day breakfast from here, quality ingredients and yes it take a bit longer but everything is fresh and cooked as needed. Didn't leave hungry. Police, friendly staff. Yes its a bit dated but its and industrial café, which mostly serves truckers.

We chanced it here as the place we originally wanted to go couldn't seat us and I'm glad we did. The food was delicious, the cocktails were amazing (2for£12), the atmosphere was great as were the staff. We've been previously when it was Klay, but now under Pig & Pitchfork.
