Had our ‘Friends Christmas Celebrations’ here & had a brilliant time. The 3 course Christmas dinner was delicious & plenty of food, couldn’t fault it. The atmosphere was great as the World Cup was on & afterwards they had a singer & guitarists on & every one was enjoying themselves. The staff & owners were so friendly & accommodating. I’ve always liked it there & all 4 of us were glad we chose to go there.

Last time we visited here (three years ago) we had a nice meal. Unfortunately, this time was very disappointing. Had the spicy hot chicken wings as a starter which were very good and quite spicy. Ordered a chicken curry and a hunter chicken. Hunter chicken was unavailable so it was changed to a another chicken curry. When it arrived it was served with oddly shaped popadoms which had a peculiar taste. The actual meal tasted like one out of a packet and was at different temperatures through out so I would guess it had been microwaved. Not a pleasant meal and certainly not worth the money. It will probably be another three years before we decide to try it again. Several pubs nearby are far superior to what we received this time.

Paid £48 for 3 Sunday lunches to be delivered. Food was prepared at 2.14pm and delivered an hour later by Red Lion driver. Stone cold, congealed sauce. Beef was tough and had gristle running through every piece. Disgusting will never order again from there.

First time I’ve been there since it has been taken over by the new owners. The food and service was absolutely brilliant. Great little pub, staff were incredible, nothing was ever too much. The food was beautiful, lovely homemade proper food and great portion size. I would highly recommend going there for food or even just going for a drink. The environment was brilliant, for families and individuals. Would highly recommend to my friends and family. Couldn’t fault one thing! Will be certainly going back there very soon.

Went on Saturday 12/01 for a meal with friends and food was excellent - steak/ daily special ( last one !!) gammons were all freshly cooked and plentiful . There was a new lady in charge who sorted out a mix up over our booking with speed and minimum of fuss and an unexpected bonus of a great singer/ entertainer called Fiona . We had an incredible evening - just the thing to banish January blues

We went to the Red lion after walking out of the place we had originally booked. We arrived around 2:15 and placed an order for roast beef and veggie roast. They were served really quickly. The perfect location to meet a friend travelling in by train for a brief visit. I enjoyed a delicious stuffed aubergine dish for dinner with blue cheese and a generous salad, all for less than £8. It was a Friday night and we only just got a seat (it's quite a small pub) so not good for larger parties, but just right for a quiet drink, bite to eat, and to catch up with an old friend.

Chosen for the Sunday lunch on a friend's recommendation. Booked a table as this was recommended. Greeted by a female bar person who I can only describe as a face like a slapped backside. The owner however seemed very friendly. Took our seat which I felt very claustrophobic in as I was so close to the person behind me. Went to the bar to order. Chose whitebait to share for starters and gammon as there was no beef, my friend had pork. Whitebait was over fried but tasty. The gammon was of measly proportions. Served with red cabbage, not a great choice. Roast potatoes were quite nice. My friend said the pork was nice. The tiniest bit of crackling, not worth putting on the plate to be honest. Not once asked if we wanted any extra sauces or gravy. I asked for horseradish as I like it with everything. What came out was NOT horseradish, more like tartare sauce. Horrible. We moved to the bar area to finish our drinks where the miserable bar person asked was everything OK in the most uncaring tone possible, to which I replied, it was erm alright. Will not be going back to eat. Not a nice experience at all.

After choosing what we were going to have, we did not get any waiter to come over to us to take an order after 30 minutes my partner went to the bar to ask if we had to order there. This area to the east of Staines station is something of a gastronomic wilderness. For those of us looking for a quick lunch in the middle of proceedings in the rather soulless court annexe down the road, one might be forgiven for thinking the best available is a baguette from Subway (absurdly called subs) or take away chop suey. What a pleasant surprise, then, to discover the Old Red Lion, a traditional boozer just before the bridge over the railway line, where both a friendly welcome and a choice of tradtional pub Fahrenheit is available at extremely reasonable prices. Fish and chips included a nicely battered piece of cod with a generous portion of chips and a little glass pot of peas. Better still it was quickly served just in time for me to trek back through the rain to my resumed heating at the courthouse.

Hi all, any other review from me and today five of us went for Sunday lunch at The Old Red Lion in Staines. I used to live locally but never went into this pub but had passed it on many occasions. I was looking on trip for somewhere to eat and found some favourable reviews so took a punt. As a lot of pubs in the are either gastro like or boozers I was looking for a nice pub with decent food and boy we found it. Myself and the good lady, my daughter and her partner and my sister were all pleasantly surprised with the pub as it was clean and patronised by locals and run by a lovely Irishman. We all went for the Sunday roast which was served quickly, 3 chicken and 2 beef. The food was all cooked beautifully and presented well and really tasty. We also had 3 deserts, 2 rounds of drinks (mainly soft) and a coffee and when I asked for the bill well I was pleasantly surprised by being asked to shell out the grand sum of £61 what fantastic value. Why don't more pubs offer this type of value for money. As a foot not both the men's and ladies loos were exceptionally clean and when was the last time you saw the brass down pipe from the cistern to the urinals in the men's loo polished. What a great pub and thanks for a lovely lunch.

Simple well cooked food, and plenty if it, that's what you get at the Old Red Lion. We ate Sunday Lunch in the 'snug' which was a small area with 5 or 6 tables off of the main bar area, this wasn't too busy as many people seemed to eat in the bar area. Food was well prepared and the portions were huge - for £8.95 it represented excellent value - none of us could manage dessert we were so full. Quality was good too, we all had a different roast and gage meat & veg was cooked excellently. Range of beers in the pub was good. Ambiance and decor were ok, what you'd get in a typical pub on a Sunday afternoon. Worth a visit if you're in the Staines / Egham area.

Always a great welcome from them all. Andy deserves every praise, he works so very hard.

I visited this pub last month for the first time in a number of years based on a recommendation by a friend. I used to be a regular, however, the place went into a mini decline about 5 years ago but i'm pleased to say that since the new LL took over, the old place looks to be back on track, and, dare I say it, even better than before. The beer is well kept, although not the most inspiring selection in he world, but it was the food that really impressed me. The new chef, Andy, served up a perfectly cooked joint of roast beef, served exactly as it should be with all the trimmings. Others in my group had the burgers, which are hand made by the chef, they too were very complimentary about their food. Overall, I have eaten here now three times in the last month, and on each occasion I have found the food to be of a consistently high standard.

I have been a few times at lunchtime recently and have found the food to be of very high quality, conservatively priced and altogether great value. The staff are very friendly and you will be received with a smile and good service.

Great local pub, attentive service, well presented food and perfectly cooked blue steak which as a chef eating out is very hard to find another chef that can cook it this way. Well worth the visit on a rare evening off would recommend The Old Red Lion for a meal or just for a drink full of character where everyone is made welcome and you can have a quiet pint or a good old laugh.

This pub used to be a really warm, friendly pub with a well kept cellar and an old fashioned respectful ambiance full of young and old alike. Due to the business ethos of the owners though, it has had many, many managers and short lived landlords. The current encumbants keep a decent cellar and the new chef Andy produces a hearty and tasty pub food menu. BUT the clientele has changed massively and now mostly comprises of swearing, loud, heavy drinking individuals with a smaller contingent of old clients. It doesn't feel welcoming nor nice anymore. Most locals now go elsewhere. If the North Star and The George are your kind of places then you'll like it. If The Bells, The Swan etc are more to your taste, give it a miss.

There have been a few changes in the management recently which have not always created a good atmosphere. But more recently there have been notable changes including the chef who served up a delicious buffet with a chilli to die for on NYE. So cheers to a brighter future. ps (prices similar to the George)

I have been coming here to drink for a while now and the new landlord and lady are brilliant! Very friendly! The food recently changed hands to a new chef too! Today we ordered 3 steaks, 2 rare, 1 medium well. They were reasonably priced at 10.95 each and the best I have had in a long time!I also have had chilli con carne and roast here in the past and both are also great value for money and delicious!I feel like this pub is underrated on trip adviser! Great pub, great food!

In recent times there has been a lot of changes and not all for the better, but now the Old RedLion has settled down with a very nice couple Ron and Jane, who know how to run a pub. A new chef has devised a good and tasty varied menu including Sunday lunches. Also there are a selection of guest beers regularly put on. A friendly pub with a good atmosphere and families are welcome. I have been using this pub for 40 years and am glad it is back to 'normal' !(Alan Warman)

1st December - early family Christmas gathering and our visit didn’t disappoint. The Retreat delivered a superb Roast - tender meat, crispy roast spuds with a delicious range of veg! Even the Christmas crackers were funny! Staff looked after us with food delivered promptly but without being rushed. Also nice atmosphere so we will be back!

This review is sad to say . I always say support local independent businesses but in this case I would of rather of gone to the Premier inn or travel lodge . So where do I start . Room 19 booked for 4 nights due to working local . Perfect location in a prime spot . Shower took for ever and a day to heat up. Bed and pillows harder than a brick . Bedding so thin for december. Heating didn't work . Windows really thin so Room was so cold . Walls and floor so thin you could hear everything and everyone . Friday night they had a party till 00.30 The music was so loud and speakers were outside. Fantastic if you haven't got a 5am alarm like I did . I did call reception and they was not much help or very apologetic. I followed this up with an email also have not received a reply. Unfortunately this place is over priced and needs much TLC . Would not recommend or stay here again . Nice touch they come in every day to make the bed and change bath towels . Please improve your Rooms.

BEWARE OF PARKING TICKET!!! i popped in and connected my car for charging. I have since received a fine. Really poor signage here to warn drivers that there are park costs. Really terrible way to treat customers.
