Our first visit to the Farmers Arms, probably since it was last called The Farmers Arms. We were welcomed with a smile and taken to our table, drinks orders taken and menu left. We made our decision, which wasn’t that easy since there were specials on and Thursday is Curry Night with a Vegan Thai, Lamb Vindaloo and Chicken Korma available. Drinks were delivered promptly and there was just the right wait for food – too quick and I always assume ‘boil in the bag’! My Chicken Wings were fantastic – usually I ignore them because I don’t see the point of sucking some sauce off a few bony bits but these were pump, sticky and gorgeous – and plentiful. He had the Black Pudding Scotch Egg and said it was the best one he’d ever had. His Halloumi Burger looked and tasted lovely and came with an unusual but delicious salad. I had issues with my main course, but these were promptly and efficiently dealt with to my complete satisfaction. We will be going back, but I will have to make the decision to forgo the wings to try something new (probably).

We popped in after a walk with our 3 young children noticing the large area this place has outside along with a children’s play area. We only visited to refresh ourselves with a drink and we where pleased with the friendly service we received from the staff and the cleanliness of the place. Hopefully next time we will stop for a meal but slightly put off by the price and previous comments of the food service.

We came to the Farmers for a wedding and couldn’t have been more impressed. The pub has recently been done up and is beautifully done. Kids playground in the garden as well as a beautiful decked area. The food we had was extremely tasty. We didn’t order from the menu but everything was to a high standard. As for the service it was the best. We live far away but wish we had somewhere like this locally. We will be back.

After such bad reviews this pub which changed hands 18 months ago really needs to be visited ,especially for the warm welcome ,food and Sunday lunch . So bad, I’m still feeling sore about paying for this experience. £70 odd quid that I’ll pine for for a good while, to the detriment of my good missus’ patience. Service terrible, took ages to get a drink and even longer to get some simple dishes while we sat feeling abandoned in an empty part of the dining room ( which by the way,the bloke made us wait to see if he had a table for us ... there was no other bugger in the place!....although that could have been because they had run out of chips....how can you run out of chips?! There’s a Sainsbury’s 5 minutes away that sells loads of them!)- anyway, food very poor (no starters ordered or anything fancy) all came after a 45 minute wait (after 10 minutes sitting on the pass...just enough time to dry the risotto out nicely. ((first lot of drinks had well gone by then so had to get more )). The pie of the day on the other hand, was a sight to behold. A sad as you like slice of under seasoned dull pastried depression on a plate. Don’t mention the sausages ( in a sausage heavy menu, I have to say, you’d think these would be ok,right? - no,nope, no thanks.) All in all, like nobody there could be bothered. Well, I won’t be bothered going back...so there...

Having collected a repaired chair from Hoylake were looking for somewhere for lunch. We came across the Old Rathbone and ventured in. The people were welcoming, the pub was warm and i was hungry. The menu is not huge, meaning the food is freshly prepared, but offered snough choice to make life interesting. I opted for the mixed grill and my wife has a fish finger ciabatta, which came with a large bowl of chips. Her latte was fine, as we're my two pints of Mad Goose. The mixed grill was the best I've had in years, with a medium rare steak, lovely lamb chop and nothing overcooked and dry, which I often find with other mixed grill. If only we didn't live 300 miles away I'd happily go there more often!

Visited 28/12 18. Table booked for 1.30 Waited 40 mins for order to be taken and another hour for food to arrive. Was meant to be a birthday treat with my family but was just a very poor experience. Two children's meals were meant to include ice cream which they never received. When the adult meals eventually arrived we waited another ten minutes for one person to get their food.. Also had a long wait for the drinks. Were told they were short staffed due to time of year. If that is the case they should not have been taking bookings that they knew they were unable to cater for. I was there with visitors from USA and was ashamed of this experience.

Came here for a family birthday meal, 7 adults, 3 kids. Table was booked & we were seated and given menus promptly, all good but not for long. Sat there for 40 minutes & not a single member of staff came over to offer us drinks or take our food order. We wondered if it was table service or should we order ourselves at the bar so we ordered our drinks at the bar. 3 aperol spritz ordered amongst other things, the staff didn’t seem to know how to make this drink and we waited around a further 15 minutes to get them. If you have a drink on a cocktail menu the bar staff should at least know how to make it. I can tell you it was not a proper aperol spritz & it’s not exactly difficult to make. Finally after around 45 minutes the food order was taken. 3 of us had starters which we waited ages for, when we complained about the wait on food we were told ‘it’s because three of you had starters’. It should not take an hour from ordering to get 3 starters out followed by mains. One of the meals they had ran out of so an alternative had to be chosen. One hour and 40 minutes later our meals arrived bar one, which was about a further 10 minutes even though one other person ordered the exact same meal and had already been served. Not fair when everyone is eating and one person is sat there without their food.

We had a lovely table on Saturday evening and it was really relaxing. With a couple of older family members it was great to have so much room..not squashed in together as we’ve found in other pub restaurants. The restaurant and bar area looked wonderful with tasteful Christmas decorations and even though there was a group in the snug, and other diners alongside people at the bar, the service was great and we were well looked after by Arthur and his team. The menu isn’t pretentious with just ‘traditional’ pub restaurant choices including vegetarian options. We will definately be back and would happily recommend the Old Rathbone for an evening meal.

Just been out for my husbands birthday a treat from our daughter. The starters were very good, I had fish cakes and my husband and daughter had Nachos. My daughter had fish and chips (large) or should I say two small fish. My husband had the Lamb shank which was only just cooked and not the slow roasted as on the menu. The mash was glutinous and sticky. The carrots were very nice. I had a large rack of ribs which came on a wooden board piled on the chips. It was impossible to get at the chips so I asked for a plate. The ribs were awful and I had to use a steak knife to cut them they did not fall apart. We had to go looking for someone to complain to. When the manager came out he was very ineffectual. he handled the complaint very badly. When we told him what was wrong he said ok I will tell the chef. Would you like anything else, we declined the offer. Our daughter finished her meal and we felt like lepers as no one came near us. The waitress eventually came and took the plates away and informed us the two meals would be removed from the bill. When the bill came they had omitted one of our drinks. We informed them our bill was incorrect and they said it did not matter. We paid the bill and left. We wont be going back

It was our first visit today for lunch, food was mediocre and the service was terrible. We were told it was table service, were shown to our table and were not asked if we would like to order a drink. We waited a fair while so I went to the bar to order food and drinks. The barman helped me bring the drinks to the table. After about 15 - 20 minutes we heard the chef call service, I saw our meals on the pass. He called service again. No response. I saw the waitress at the far end of the garden out of the window she was going into the snack shack. I went up to the pass to tell the chef that she was not in the restaurant. The chef then brought over the meals. After the meal no one came over to ask if we wanted dessert. As we had already paid we just left the restaurant unnoticed. Overall this was a very disappointing dining experience. This is a shame as we live close by in West Kirby.

Fabulous is the only word to describe our evening here. Our waiter, I’m sorry to say I didn’t get his name, was friendly and helpful. Our table was lovely, tucked away in a quiet corner of the restaurant. The relaxed ambience was very welcome after a hectic week. My husband had pate to start and was delighted with not only the delicious pâté but the accompanying red onion relish. I had the nachos which were so yummy with pulled beef, jalapeños and cheese. We then both had rump steaks which were cooked to perfection...one rare and one medium. Unfortunately neither of us had room for dessert or coffee. Next time we have agreed no starters so we can sample the desserts and coffee. Ooops nearly forgot wine list is really good and fairly priced.

Today my family and I had a lovely meal at the old rathbone! Having been 'old regulars' to the farmers arms, this pub is a favourite of ours. We love walking to the rathbone from our home in Greasby (esp in autumn/winter). We hadn't been recently due to a bit of bad gossip when they first re opened but I have to say, we received the best service, food and value for money that we've had in a long time. We where greeted promptly by Josh who welcomed us to choose our own table and menus and drink came swiftly behind. We had the Cumberland sausage and wholegrain mustard mash which was served in good time and hot! All the staff seemed to pitch in asking if we needed anything and offered to get us more drinks which was great. The decor has been vastly improved, everything was spotless! Nothing was too much trouble. We will definitely be returning again soon! There's nothing better than sitting in the snug by the fire for pre meal drinks in the autumn time! I'm so glad it's improved so much as there are a lot of 'let down' pubs in the area. Thank you Josh and the team! The Roberts family x

I went to the Rathbone with two friends Saturday last week, The food and waitress service was good. I went to the till to pay the bill and was given the wrong bill, while the food looked the same the drinks were not on there and so I reported this, I was charged £80.60 for the bill with the drinks in addition. As I was leaving a waiter chased after me to say that I had paid the wrong bill, there was a £9 difference which I offered to pay by cash or credit card but the employee insisted that the till would only take the whole amount and that the original £80 paid would go back on my card. I expressed a grave reservation and was assured that the amount would be paid. One week later I am still waiting for the refund with interest undoubtedly being charged to my credit card as both payments have been deducted from my account. Outrageous!! I had to phone up today and take time that I don't have chasing this...a real rip off! I have currently paid double for this meal. Too much hassle to ever go again and according to the guy I spoke to today, this has happened before!!

While holidaying from Australia visiting my family, 25 in all decided to have a few drinks and a snack at the Rathbones beer garden, to my disgrace my sister purchased a sausage in a bun from the shack, 6 pound cost, it was a very dry bun with a sausage and uncooked onions, my sister was very unhappy with it, no sauce or butter on the bun, her daughter took it back and they offered a pizza instead which was not what I would call a pizza, was disgusting, My niece ordered a pizza for her daughter for 4 pound, it arrived and was disgraceful, burnt and so small and so thin with hardly any filling on top, my niece returned it to the shack and the person behind the counter laughed and informed her that he was the chef, and the pizza was not burnt how dare he be so rude, I was so disgusted, we are not complainers as a rule but truly I have never seen such bad service I certainly would not recommend the beer garden, the food that was being served from the pub itself looked lovely but expensive. It is a shame they need to lift their game

It’s such a great location and the beer garden is lovely for the kids with the play area. I just can’t get over the prices compared to other local pubs, especially since the customers are most likely to be family’s, £19 for a bottle of the cheaper wine, the kids meals are now slightly cheaper if you get from the snack shack £4 for a pizza/burger but you have to pay extra for the sides, adult meals still expensive. We used to come most weekends a couple of years ago but now we just can’t justify the expense which is such a shame. Also there used to be themed days/ face painting etc would be good to bring some of that back...

The pub has gone up massively in standard since the referb and we will be visiting again soon! Compliments to Luke the manager and John the head chef.

I went with a friend for lunch and we had a very enjoyable time. We both ordered the pear, walnut and blue cheese salad but we asked for feta cheese instead and this was not problem at all. The salad was absolutely delicious. We sat on the deck in the sunshine and spent a very nice couple of hours there. The service was very good and the staff were efficient and friendly.

Went for lunch 2 of us had fish and chips which consisted of a small piece of cod and a mix of burnt chips and aunt bessie roasties on our plates which I found strange and it was garden peas not pea puree. For 12.95 it was poor. My friend had a sandwich and an excuse for a salad wilted leaves soggy . We did complain and we got a free desert . It wasn't busy so there was no excuse for the poor quality of food especially at these prices. Sorry but don't be returning .

After picking our little boy up from school we decided to go out for tea & enjoy the warm weather! The farmers (now known as The old Rathbone) was first place that sprung to mind knowing it had a great space for the kids to play outside, knowing that there's no where really anymore with facilities for children to play. We were pleasantly surprised to see the farmers under the new name The Old Rathbone & also the kids play area had been given a spruce up, so far so good we couldn't wait to taste the food on the new menu! When we were given the menu I assumed we had been given the lunch menu as it was very brief i.e. soup, burger, fish and a selection of small plates etc, I went inside to ask for the dinner menu & I was told this was it dinner menu unless we wanted to eat inside??????????????????????????????????????????????????

We've been visiting the this pub and its predecessors since the 80s. The downward trend continues despite the renaming. Looked at the online menu we decided it offered a decent balance between value and choice. On arrival the online prices, checked that day, had increased by 33%, a fact which the two comatose bar staff shrugged off dismissively despite it incurring an extra £50 on the bill for our party, as they did the numerous complaints regarding slow services which arose from other customers during my 20 minutes wait at the bar. I have 2 regrets: That I visited in the first place and that I paid for the drinks I had ordered. Walking straight out would have been a much better option. The end of an era for me.

Not a huge choice on menu. Service very slow 30 minutes for our starters to arrive. One mac and cheese one Welsh eaten it and French onion soup. Felt over priced for what you got. Mains 3 fish and chips and hake and new potatoes. Very small portion of fish on all 4 dishes. Over cooked chips and fish. Cold pea puree in a ramekin. Hake was asked for with new pots and no veg just plain. Arrived with veg and some sort of beetroot sauce poured on. This was returned came back with veg removed but still had sauce. Sent back again. This time came back on a clean plate but clearly the same fish with sauce wiped of. Potatoes had some sort of coating which was not very nice. Not one of us enjoyed the meal. Would NOT recommend this place at all. Very disappointed. Poor choices over priced

This was our first lunchtime visit since refurbishment. It was a bright sunny day, so along with most patrons, we sat outside.

We came here twice ( there is play area outside for kids which is good ) but really disappointed with the food n service wasn’t good either. The first time husband had steak it was rubbery n I had the pork it was bland n the chips were greasy. the second time we had roast (I should of take a pic of it) sorry to say probably the worst roast dinner we ever had n it was so dry ! the portion was small, very little vegetable n the Yorkshire pudding was dry too! It’s such a shame as it’s a lovely place especially for the kids, not sure if we will visit again !

Two of us went midweek for the first time. The tables were nicely spaced and service was good. What was not particularly appealing was the mishmash of ingredients on my partners plate which was barely edible. The additional potato side dish was average. We pointed this out to the waitress but no manager or chef appeared to listen to our concerns. The meal was expensive for what it was. We will not be back.

We went with neighbours who visit frequently. The staff were very helpful and the service was good. It had a lovely atmosphere and we are planning to go again soon. The poor reviews no way reflect our experience. We are recommending it to all our friends.

We regularly go as a family, great staff, lovely food, great atmosphere and the garden for the kids to play in is fantastic. We have now made this our local, nothing is too much trouble and even the dogs are welcome! Highly recommend to all

You know what? That was the best beef that I have had in a very, very long time! It is already establishing itself as a great local again - and with Sunday lunch like that, why bother turning your own oven on?!

Well !!! We came in the day to see this make over for ourselves as we had not been since the remodel, the sunny day and Children playing on the grass definitely made an impression, beautiful. So we had one drink and my husband went in and made the booking for 7 for 4 people that evening.

We recently held a funeral reception here at short notice. The team were very accommodating and professional. Very easy to deal with and everyone was very friendly. We were able to relax with family and friends while they took care of everything else. The buffet was bought out at the time we had requested was enjoyed by all.

Arrived at 1.30 Saturday lunch, offered a table by open Patio doors on a rather chilly day why they where open God only knows ! Sat else where. Placed order no problems starter Welsh Rearebit on sourdough ? Turned up on a slice of thin sliced white bread ? I had the burger which was good. The liver and onions was terrible, went from bad to worse ! Just one poor girl run ragged trying to serve rather a lot of people, took 45 minutes to get a second drink then trying to pay - nearly walked out - took 15 minutes to pay ! So disappointed maybe there at the wrong time but will not be going back, such a shame they did half price the liver and onions meal , plus rather over priced £37.00 for a bottle of Gavi ? It is a pub not a restaurant , don't let this review put you off, as know there are some very good ones, but sorry not for me far better places on the Wirral to visit

My husband and I had Sunday lunch here today. We had read the reviews, some of which weren't very good, but decided to see for ourselves. We were very pleasantly surprised. I had the roast beef and my husband had the roast lamb, for dessert we had the white chocolate creme brulee and sticky toffee pudding. The food was really delicious, one of the best roasts I've ever had. The staff were very friendly, attentive and welcoming despite it being very busy. Overall a really good experience. I would recommend the Old Rathbone to anyone, we will certainly be going back.

We tried the Rathbone following its recent relaunch. The initial reviews weren’t good, but it seemed the management took responsibility and wanted to put it right, so we gave it a go. It’s a nicely decorated pub with friendly staff. The food was excellent. The pear, walnut and blue cheese salad (we shared a starter) was well put together. We tried the specials. The venison was excellent and the seafood assiette was very well flavoured. White chocolate crepe brûlée good and simple cheese board. £5 for starters and desserts is good. £18 for specials seemed on the high side, but was worthwhile for the quality. Good wine list and range of beers.

Very expensive for average food. Pretty miserable staff. Over-charged me for a sausage and mushroom (tiny) batch. When I politely queried it the server took my batch out of the bag, removed one of two tiny sausages and then charged me the correct price. It was very strange! Been popping in and off for years. Won’t be returning.
