Some friends had been here before and recommended it. Their special offer was two rib eye or rump steaks and a bottle of wine for £35 or £30 respectively which we chose. My steak was, as requested, a perfectly cooked juicy medium rare rib-eye. My wife had the same and was suitably impressed so we both would highly recommend. The pub was quite busy and, as a result of the wooden floor, was quite noisy but created a lively atmosphere. Would go again but can't comment on other available dishes., The staff were extremely friendly and the service excellent too.

In the lovely pretty village of Braunston, you will find this fantastic pub . Tasty home made food , lots of locally sourced products. Very welcoming . Really cosy relaxed atmosphere. Me & my wife thoroughly enjoyed our lunch time meal . We had the home made lasagne,( smaller apatite option from the menu )...salad, garlic bread. With a side order of fries . For after we had the sticky toffee cheesecake ! .... All was very nice indeed. The Guinness was excellent as well . We both would 100% recommend The Old Plough. We had a wonderful time . Thanks to everyone for making our day ! . .. As it is extremely popular. It may be advisable to phone ahead & check the food service hours . Maybe pre book a table as well . To avoid any disappointment. It's well worth the small effort. Lovely pub in a lovely village . We will be back very soon .

This is one of those places where I can only say that if you're vegan and end up there, they do have food for you. But as a vegan, I wouldn't go out of my way for it. The pub is clean and comfortable, with a variety of sizes and shapes of tables, very traditional decoration, and a welcoming vibe. They even have a document that shows ownership of the location for the last 250 years or so, which was interesting. The staff were pleasant and had a sense of humour about things, which I always appreciate. The vegan food... was very, very bland and plain, and also requires a sense of humour. The "Quorn-style" vegan burger consisted of a dry bun with a few green leaves and a fried, breaded, nondescript slab of something moist and light-colored. It came with a side of fries and a cup of something pinkish, which tasted of nothing, but at least it lubricated the burger a bit. No onion, pickles, tomato, mustard, or other additions were provided. The "Vegan Cottage Pie with seasonal vegetables" was a fairly attractive-looking pile of veg in sauce with some bits of mashed potato on top, a serving of new potatoes, and some strips of carrot and green beans that would taste familiar to anyone who has had a tv-dinner with peas and carrots. Seasonal someplace, perhaps, at some time, but not around here. The potatoes were good, but the "pie" was completely bland and flavourless and wasn't even rescued by the copious application of salt and pepper. Has the cook ever even tasted it? A little sage, maybe a vegetable stock cube, some majoram or rosemary, and salt would make it so much better. I generally don't enjoy giving bad reviews, but I cook quite frequently on our boat, with limited space, and I've never made anything half this flavourless.

I was moored up between Midland Chandler's and Braunston locks. I walked straight past the Boat House and up the hill to this little gem. Three nights, two steaks and a liver and onion. Guinness, Doombar, Hobgoblin Ruby, Inches cider, Moretti and Cruzcampo. Plenty of parking out the back. Pool table. Indoor table skittles. Three large TVs across two bars. Garden. If I lived close, it would be my local.

If I could give this place 7 stars I would! We turned up as a party of 14 dripping wet from walking in the rain and we were welcomed and nothing was too much trouble for the kind-hearted staff. They moved the tables around to accommodate us and made provision for our wet coats. They let the children play darts while we waited for our meals. A friendly and smiling welcome wich made you think you're special to them. Good beers - a decent choice including Butty Bach as a really good bitter. The menu is traditional pub rather than gatronomic but that's what we were hoping for. The pie is a good size and meat-filled. Vegetables are great and chips are proper chips. We only had the one course but the starters and desserts sounded great. Chatting to the community managers later proved that they have full time businesses of their own but run them completely separately from the living quarters upstairs. They are on hand 24/7 for emergencies etc. It's a venture for them and for the village. Interestingly they are intent on improving on the reputation of previous owners / managers. This is a village pub that serves good food in good time at reasonable rates. It's not, and doesn't try to be, a restaurant with more exotic offerings. It's historic, a proper pub, and an important part of the village and the UK canal scene (if some way away from the canal!)
