What a great place to spend a Sunday afternoon. Staff extremely friendly, food was fantastic and everything was spot on. This place is wonderful, both in the summer and the winter… don’t miss out coming here if you can. The open fire and log burner just makes it all that much better.

We stopped here for lunch purely because we happened to drive past it and were glad we did. A nice little spot, the food was great (I had the mussels which were fresh and cooked well). The staff were very helpful and friendly - my car's battery ran flat and the owner took the time to move some cars around and tables to get his car next to mine so we could jump start it, even though it was a busy bank holiday. Great place and many thanks!

We booked well in advance for Sunday lunch at 1400 hrs. When we ordered (which took 25 minutes to simply order drinks and a further 10 to receive them), we were told in a matter of fact way that all the roasts had 'gone' by the short blonde haired lady. The girls serving our table were lovely but the management staff were staggeringly unfriendly. When we went to pay, we noted that a "Martini" had been added to our bill. When asked, the short dark haired manager came to look at the bill, said briefly that he had added it "because he ran 2 tables together" (the other table was not with us). He was just short of rude to us and made us feel like the problem was ours before eventually deducting the "Martini" and deliberately walking away before we had time to re-check the bill. He also deliberately avoided making any apology to us and the food was average at best. Be aware that we paid a 10% service charge (not optional) to be treated like this. We advise you to avoid unless you like being disappointed.

Staff are amazing, so friendly and attentive. They go above and beyond in every element of service. Kate who is the owner makes a great effort to make everyone welcome. No wonder they have won best pub of the year two years running. Had food there too and it’s so tasty, portions are generous and they adapt anything you need.

Lovely location, unfortunately the food was awful. 3 of us had roast lamb which was full of fat and had to be sent back, the potato's were hard and dry and the vegetables were some sort of green mush. My mum who is coeliac asked for gluten free, she was given a Yorkshire pudding on top of her meat (clearly not gluten free) which left us concerned about the rest of the meal. My husband had beef short ribs which smelt rancid and had to be sent back. What a shame as we were looking forward to a nice family Sunday lunch. They did deduct 3 of the meals from the bill but the food was inedible so only right they should do this.

Went for a Sunday lunch although we didn't choose a roast they looked amazing as they were being taken out to customers. Large portions and huge yorkshire puds!. For me a perfect Autumn / Winter meal. The staff were really nice and attentive. The menu was varied with something for everyone. The gazpacho followed by the halloumi and water melon salad was delicious and perfect for a hot day. Others in our group had the curry and the Thai noodles and both said they were great choices. Really dog friendly and beautiful garden with pretty hanging baskets and pots. Looks a loved pub.

Shockingly terrible is being polite. Only two tables taken in the whole pub on a sunny Sunday lunchtime should have set alarm bells ringing whilst beer garden only half full. Service was ok till something wasn’t right then it went badly downhill from there. The food was terrible roast fat and crunchy Yorkshire puddings, fries just tasted of oil. Felt sorry for the waitresses serving up such a dire excuse of a meal. Used to be a nice hidden gem of a pub but sadly it appears there are issues in the kitchen that really need immediate attention, we won’t ever be back sadly. The bill was adjusted thankfully but our family birthday meal was ruined.

It’s old, typically East Sussex character. Low ceiling and beams ( tall people take care!), wood fireplace and has an ambience that screams’I am a locals pub’. Although Aussie ‘imports’ we were made to feel instantly welcome and accepted by the young staff fronting for the recently turned over owner(S)/management. I’ve visited this pub many times over my lifetime when jetting over to visit family so I felt ‘at home’. The good beers were still…good beers! Whether real ales or lagers. The wines available include local whites and my wife and I selected an OZ import…one we know well from a vineyard in the Hunter Vally NSW. A cracking Shiraz from Tempus Two. The price was comparable to what we pay in OZ. Winner!!! What I did not expect was the up grade of the food on offer. It was a Sunday dinner so we opted on advice from our personable and well informed bar staff/waiter for a roast with all the trimmings. Both of us chose lamb over pork belly, beef and vegetarian ‘Wellington’. When it arrived we could not believe the generosity of the portion. A mound of lean lamb cooked medium rare as requested. Feather light Yorkshire pud, as well as perfect roast potatoes accompanied by pumpkin purée, roast parsnip, carrots and wilted spinach. The gravy was a cracker. I surrendered to an entree of creamy parsnip and ginger soup. A rib sticker with phenomenal flavour. No way could we fit in a dessert although I bet the choices would be amazing too. We were proudly informed that one of the two chefs was a Michelin star winning Frenchman who has worked in the posh ‘stuff’ around London and Europe. That explains a lot! My advice? Go and sample this pub and grub while they have this amazing food on offer and a staff that is so so friendly and eager to please. Oh yes…I will be back…👍👍👍

When I entered I should have been more cognisant, every table had huge plates of food left on the plate. I ordered a beer at tha bar, sat down and was well attended by the waitress. Starter mixed fish fries(forget the title), scampi and chips as a main. The beer was superb, Long Man brewery, well kept, well served. The food was "pub grub" and very down market. I was so looking forward to a decent menu, very poor, decent meal, fried cheap rubbish. Such a waste of a lovely venue, great bear, comfortable situation. So glad we returned after the last owner decimated it over the last two years. What was was once a joy to visit was destroyed by the last owner who had no idea about the customer experience but concentrated on his own self importance. Now, with new owners, the vibe is back. Covid has made us all wary, but now we can return indoors we tried it out with friends for the first time in a year and a half. What a wonderful evening. Staff were masked and fully Covid compliant. The restaurant was virtually empty which was surprising but I guess folk are still wary. The food was lovely, the staff very attentive and a superb evening was had by all. A great first for returning out into the restaurant world and embracing Covid rules. Will certainly be back.

Lovely old pub, recently taken over by new owners. This was this first time we’d been since it has reopened. The garden was lovely, and our meal was delicious. Everyone that served us was friendly and helpful. We really enjoyed ourselves and will return, especially as there are a few good veggie choices. The wine list was extensive as well. The only thing I would recommend would be to increase the rose selection and maybe add a sparkling wine by the glass option. Anyway, I would thoroughly recommend a visit.

Visited today, under the awning in the beer garden. Just as well as the heaven's opened after we'd been seated for twenty minutes. Prompt attentive staff brought welcoming quaffs of locally brewed ale and two well proportioned meals. Despite the weather it was not too chilly. Not the cheapest of menus, but I tend to look for value for money. You can tell that effort was made in the presentation of the food and the variety of ingredients. Pleasant clientele too. I looked longingly inside the empty pub, recalling the cosy atmosphere and log burning fire of old. Something to look forward too when this dreaded lurgy has passed. Good luck to all the staff. On the basis of what we experienced today you all deserve great success. Keep it up! Thank you.

My husband and I lsometimes pop into the Old Oak, it has a lovely atmosphere and is very pretty both inside and out. Real fire when it is chilly. We chanced upon their Christmas singalong (next one 13 December 2020) three years ago and booked to come with friends last year and then went with a bigger group last evening. It is such fun that it has now become part of our Christmas routine. We get there a bit before 6pm which gives us time to have a meal and then the singing starts around 7pm. Everybody sings their socks off - particularly those who, like myself and my husband, cannot sing! The staff are always lovely, the food is fine, there is a good choice of wines and beers and then we are treated to mince pies and chocs during the interval. All in all, a lovely fun evening.

I choose the Sussex Smoky as a starter whilst the wife had a Prawn Cocktail.... the starters were delicious and nothing remained on our plates! The mains were just as stunning with my wife commenting that the vegetarian short crust pastry pie was the best she’d ever tasted. Whilst my roast beef was just as I’d have wanted it! Nicely decorated pub in a lovely Sussex surrounding. We arrived without a reservation and they kindly seated us, no probs. Tooka while to get noticed and we had to ask - but got there in the end. Were handed the menu, which is comprehensive, lots of choices, took 15 minutes to review and select - no probs. Carefully selected from the correct menu for the day - just to be told, quite rudely - that they 'don't do sandwiches' on Sunday - but the menu shows they do.Reordered and here was the real disappointment - fast-food type meals, clearly not what we were expecting with the meals costing over £13.00 each. Basic, with little aesthetic thought or presentation. Something you get in a city centre mass-market pub.Overall - a big disappointment.

I had heard a lot of good things about this pub so decided to give it a go. It is a typical country pub quaint cozy and inviting. We chose to sit near the bar and whilst having our drinks we perused the menu. I must say it was extensive and catered for meat and vegetarian eaters. My friend opted for the calves liver and bacon while I ordered the vegetarian pie with sweet potato fries and peas. Whilst waiting for our food my friend went to the toilet and when she came back she informed me how clean they were. During our visit there more people coming in which is testament to the friendly atmosphere and quality of the food. Our lunch arrived and it looked tasty. The presentation of my friend's liver and bacon was up there with the top London eateries. I was pleased with my vegetarian pie. It was a generous size and packed full of delicious vegetables in what I can only describe as pastry that melted in the mouth like those vienness whirl biscuits. The sweet potato fries were to die for crisp on the outside tender on the inside. Both my friend and I said it was truly well worth the trip. I had to pay the ladies a visit out of curiosity and boy oh boy the place was like a palace literally you could eat off the floor. Spotlessly clean. Quite often you find the food is good but the toilets are a let down. As you can guess would highly recommend this establishment and no wonder it has won awards. The chef needs to be praised on his/her culinary skills. Will definitely be back.

Me and my friend arrived for a cream tea about 10mins early to a very unwelcome reception the lady behind the bar was very rude told us off for being early and told us we were standing in the wrong place she then frequently grunted and reluctantly showed us to a table and grumpily shouted to the kitchen “the cream teas are hear” she didn’t ask what drinks we wanted and just assumed we wanted tea she then grunted when I asked for a coffee (which was on the website as a choice) the whole time me and my friend felt like an inconvenience and at £19 a head that’s disgraceful. the food for the most part was ok the scones were very nice the sandwiches where stale but tasty and cakes where not that bad. Also we didn’t get the different offered choices of sandwiches, drinks or cream cakes as described on the website just lumped with what they chose so overall wouldn’t recommend just for the service alone !!

Our specially requested simple salad with just plain chicken was very overpriced (£13.50 I believe) but the dressing was delicious. We requested pudding: The lemon tart had 2-3 millimetres of lemon, its ice-cream had biscuit crumbs in it. The cherry roulade was served without the ice cream on the menu but was inedible because it was made with artificial cream rather than real cream as promised. The Old Oak needs to decide whether it is a pub or a restaurant. If it is a pub they need to address their prices, if it is a restaurant they need to look at the quality of the food and service. The food was mediocre at best and way overpriced for what it was. I had the chicken, bacon and mushroom pie which was ample in size but it was mostly full of white sauce, the small amount of mashed potato was insipid and there was no more than a spoonful of peas, it was accompanied by a tiny jug of tasteless gravy, all this for the princely sum of £13.00. Two of our party had a lemon and ginger cheesecake which was slightly bigger than a golf ball and was accompanied by lemon sorbet instead of the vanilla ice cream (£6.50) which its states on the dessert blackboard. The staff who are pleasant enough were clearly there for the money, there was no sign of a landlord or proprietor to oversee them and it was almost impossible to attract their attention as they were chatting to each other behind the bar. I don't think the Old Oak will ever achieve Investor in People standards. Despite our initial drink being delivered quickly nobody asked if we would like a second round, we tried in vain to attract their attention to pay the bill and ended up having to go to the bar to pay.Overall it was not the evening out we expected. The owners really need to get to grip on the place which is in a great setting, has lovely grounds, is well furnished and laid out and has plenty of parking but unless they address the quality of the food, the service and prices or take it up market to restaurant standard they are not going to attract returning customers.

We ordered a cheese and ham ploughman's lunch and a side of chips. Lunch arrived quickly and looked nice. What was very disappointing was the size of the lunch for the amount of money they charge for it. The ham was very fatty and so had to leave half of it and a tiny piece of cheddar cheese came with it all for £12.50. The side of chips came in a nice small dish but only about 15 chips for £3.50. So we paid £16.00 for this small lunch which we believe should have been no more than £7.00.

3 of us visited this pub last evening for a meal. 2 of us had a starter which was ok. For the mains one of us had sausage and mash which came with peas, The gravy was tasteless, suggest it was made with water and powder. The size of the meal was very poor never worth £11+. No flavour what so ever. Two of us decided to have wild mushroom Wellington for a change, sounded nice with mushroom sauce, broccoli and mustard mash. The wait between courses was exceptionally long, meanwhile we had a chat and then overheard a customer complaining about their meal. Not sure of outcome but they soon left. Meanwhile another couple were complaining about their meal, not looking good we thought. Anyhow along came our Wellington, sent mine back as it was nearly cold, the other person said dont bother with mine it should all come out hot. OMGoodness. The mash was sort of ok the sauce quite tasty but the main part made me feel sick just looking at it! A very thin bit of hard pastry around this dark looking "stuff" that I can only describe as stodge, thick dough. Yuk!!! The other person ate most of theirs but complained of no flavour and had no idea really what he was eating other than stodge. On complaining we were then told that we could have the meal and drinks on the house as a means of compensation. Very good of them but I would rather of had a nice meal. We, being fair people said we would pay for the drinks but not the food. We were told they had a new chef 2-3 months ago, I don't think we will be back for a while after having visited this pub many times over at least 30 years! Worst meal we have ever had anywhere. Booked a table for 6 on my wife’s birthday, owner/manager was very rude to our 21 year old son demanding identification, apparently a photo of his driving licence, passport and birth certificate wasn’t good enough. Pretty sure you can have a pint with your meal at 17 but that still wasn’t good enough. She embarrassed us and made us feel very unwelcome. This was also after being served, whilst at the table. None of us had a problem with our son being asked for identification but theres a way to speak to people politely and professionally and the staff/manager at this place lacks that ability. Stumbled upon this pub on Sunday after a bluebell walk in Arlington. They serve food in the evening so we thought we’d give it a try. Great find! There’s a pretty sunny beer garden - but as it had turned a bit chilly we went inside where it’s lovely and cosy. Staff had had a very busy day and lunch period with the weather having been so nice but they were very friendly and welcoming. The food menu is really extensive so hard not to find something to please everyone. And some tasty specials too. Also loved having a choice between chips and sweet potato fries for no extra charge (never keen on chips but love sweet potato version). All five of my group (one of whom is vegan) loved their meals and the great customer service. Would definitely recommend and come back.

Table booked for 2pm, got fed up of waiting for service so got up and got our own menus, then had to get someone to take drinks order. Finally came back 10 mins after that to take food order. Had to ask again on two more occasions for drinks as no one seemed interested in our table. Meal finally arrived at 3.15pm, 50 minutes after it had been ordered and still had to chase them up to ask for some condiments. I had to leave at 3.30pm for a prior engagement so wolfed my dinner down then left everyone else to it. Very disappointed as this was a 15th birthday celebration. Have no plans to go back as want overly impressed with my meal either.

We were a group of 5 for lunch on April 12th, seated in the restaurant, which was otherwise very quiet and slightly chilly on a dank, misty day. Two of the group chose the duck confit, a special that day, and pronounced it delicious. The sausages & mash and fish & chips were also greatly enjoyed. The friend who chose the chicken pie thought it was very nice but expressed minor reservations. The generous apple crumble, the mixed berry Eton mess (with plenty of berries) and the salted caramel cheesecake rounded off a very good meal. Service was efficient throughout. There is a small but perfectly adequate selection of real ales, and the atmosphere was just what one would expect in a traditional old pub. We enjoyed the experience and will visit again if we return to the area.

My wife and me visited here with our daughter for our 7th wedding anniversary. What an amazing find! Staff were friendly, decent sized car park and reasonable prices. I had the roast beef and apart from my wife's this was the best "roast" I've EVER HAD! The gravy was perfect, potatoes were perfect and the meat...... Oh my goodness......... Yes I will be going back!

Very disappointing meal. Chose a dish with "seasonal vegetables" so was bemused to be served only frozen peas. As I was being taken out for a treat I didn't embarrass my friend by complaining but his meal was poor too. Both meals were tasteless and not good value.

The Old Oak is a very comfortable, traditional country pub. We visited with a group of friends for Sunday lunch and weren't disappointed. We all choose the roast which was excellent. Good choice of vegetables and well presented on a hot plate ( always a plus for me). The service was attentive but not intrusive. We have found in the past that a Sunday lunch in a pub can be hit or miss, but The Old Oak gets it right.

Having lived in Australia for the last 18 years I was really looking forward to visiting a proper English pub this holiday and The Old Oak didn’t disappoint. It’s a really cosy pub, low ceilings good beer, good food and really friendly staff. Highly recommended

Thought we would pop in for a Sunday roast, we were told they only had pork but it didn't matter as they had a really large menu with lots of other options. The staff were very friendly and we sat on a lovely little table by the fire. Food was great, best pie I have had in ages. Me and my partner left very full and very happy!

This is an ancient Inn and when I had dinner there on Saturday 19trh August it was very full. In spite of that the service was brisk and cheerful. One of my party was one of these people who want to know the ins and outs of every item on the menu. The young lady who waited on us was very happy to explain and pander to this. Our service was impeccable. The food was excellent. I had Butternut squash and sweet potato soup as a starter and it was to die for. This was followed by Luxury Fish Pie which was in the same category -- superb. The whole meal was as good as it gets in a pub type restaurant. Top marks for service, top marks for quality -- well done, I shall return

Beautiful Country Pub and very friendly staff. The waitress took the time to explain the menu and answer our questions. The food was cooked well and arrived promptly. The plates had been heated too which meant that the food stayed hot. I ordered a starter and main - big mistake - portions are ample! It's been a long time since I've had a proper home cooked pie - not a dish with a flaky pastry top. Wil certainly visit again when I'm next in the area.

June. Saturday night. 25 degree temperature outside. Turned up at 9.48 to be told that it was last orders and the pub was closing at 10.30. Bought sufficient to last the half-hour and settled down at a table outside. A group of 'walkers' arrived at 10.02 to be told that the pub had closed; another car-full of potential customers turned up at 10.05 to be told the same. All were turned away. At 10.25, the outside lights were turned off, to indicate to us that we should now leave. We did, never to return. Their food might encourage some good reviews on here but their customer relations is a joke and the venue should advertise itself as a restaurant, with restaurant hours, rather than a Sussex country pub - which it certainly ain't.

Beautiful setting and a lovely deck in the beer garden. Didn't appear too busy so didn't expect a big delay. Pushed the boat out with a fillet steak for 20 quid and enjoyed a few nice peroni's as we waited. The wait went on and on and more and more peroni was consumed. After just over an hour we chased it up to be told it was going to be another 15 to 20 minutes. To be fair on them the bar staff were very apologetic and gave us 2 drinks on the house to compensate, thankyou! The food arrived about 1 hour and 20 minutes after ordering. Now at this point I would have been happy had the food been good. Alas it wasn't... My medium rare fillet steak was well done and was a pretty ropey sirloin. About a third of it was fatty and chewy, much to the joy of my dogs who ate that bit. My wife was not happy with her pie as the crust was very thick and dry so don't she was already pretty fed up with the wait. The chips she ordered with it also didn't come round and turned up about 5 minutes later.

First impressions were very good, this is an historic pub in a beautiful setting, and the décor is most pleasant. Tuesday lunch time was heaving and we were immediately warned by the friendly staff that there was a minimum 45 minute wait for food. That was no problem, and we both plumped for the slow roast pork belly. After 50-60 minutes the meals arrived. Two rolls of pork belly, four wonderful roasties, carrots and kale with splendid gravy was served. My husband was luckier with his pork; mine was not that pleasant with a lot of fat that had not been cooked long enough to render it down and we both had very little actual meat. I know that belly pork is fatty but this tasted like a cheaper cut of belly pork, have had much better elsewhere and I would not have this dish again. We were asked if everything was ok, but couldn't see the point of complaining as I ate what was there and didn't want to wait another 45 minutes. As we were both still hungry after the mains, we had a couple of desserts that were very nice. We will come back as there were plenty of alternatives on the menu that sounded good, and everyone has an off day.

The Old Oak is a busy pub late on a Saturday afternoon and this speaks of a good standard all round. We lunched in the garden where many others were too in the late afternoon so, the prudent staff asked us to settle the bill before serving since they had suffered bad experiences of guesta running off from the garden before paying the bill! This seemed a sensible precaution to us but, not a very good reflection of the age we live in.

No faults. Tried to eat 3 courses, but failed miserably as the portions were rather large. The Sussex Smokie Starter I had, has been without a doubt, the best Sussex Smokie I have ever had and I have tried a few. Just for that Starter I would go back again, but the rest of the food didn't disappoint either. The Service was spot on. Attentive, but not overbearing and as for the atmosphere; if you are looking for a typical olde English pub, then this is the place to come with the added bonus of great food and dog friendly as well!! Can't wait to visit again.

My husband and I selected to meet up with old friends for a meal instead of buying Christmas presents. When we arrived we had drink in bar , lovely atmosphere with a log fire burning which made us feel cosy. When friends arrived we went into dining room to be told (7:30pm) what wasn't available. Then as we made our choices, again told quite a few on special board weren't available (this is a Friday night). What we did choose was delicious but felt the waiter and waitress weren't giving their full attention to the customers.

Extremely disappointed with our most recent visit to the Old Oak!! Sadly have lost some regular customers after our visit Friday 13th January. Family meal for four people, we ordered 2 venison burgers and 2 steaks. We were asked 5 TIMES how we would like our steak cooked for a start. Secondly we waited a very long time for our food, well over an hour in fact. In addition to this our food wasn't by any means up to the standard we are used to, could tell it had been rushed due to poor presentation and lack of taste. We were offered no sauces upon arrival of our food and were served normal chips instead of sweet potato as requested. Also ordered a starter of mussels, waited at least 30 mins to then be told they had run out. Overall extremely disappointed with the whole experience; food, staff, presentation etc. Will not be returning after this which is a real shame as usually beyond happy with the food and service.

We had not eaten at the Old Oak for years so decided to eat out one cold January night. The bar has a welcoming log fire so we opted to eat there. There were 3 real ales on offer, Harvey's and 2 from the local Long Man brewery.

Visited for lunch on Boxing Day with seven other family members. Excellent service with a very varied menu. Being a vegetarian it was a pleasant surprise to have so much choice, very unusual in most pubs. I had veggie chilli sausages with mash which was excellent. Most of our party had the roast beef which was very good too. The atmosphere and decor is very nice and being winter , there was a lovely open fire. Good value for money too. We will definitely return soon.

Had lunch at The Old Oak, Arlington with family. Ordered Hallumi burger and chips. Hallumi on giant mushroom and brioche bun with own made pickles and coleslaw. Wow, very pleased, hallumi was cooked to perfection. Can be over salty or rubbery, but this was perfectly moist and tasty. I can truly say it's the best hallumi burger I've had, and I've had a few! Chips were thick and appeared to be double cooked, soft fluffy inside and crispy out. For desert had what I thought would be normal ice cream. Choc chip and honeycomb, was pleased, nice n creamy, natural flavours. For the meat eaters the classic burger was appreciated, fresh and seasoned well cooked to perfection. We were all glad we came. Were not disappointed. The setting was lovely decorated for Christmas with open fire. Staff attentive and friendly. Buy a Christmas tree while your there!
