I was passing through this quaint little village when lunch time came around. I didn’t spot any other cafe so in I went in search of refreshment. This is a lovely old building, full of wonky beams and hidden corners. But despite the age of the building, the furniture is modern and comfortable without looking out of place. My coffee was good. I don’t know what the food is like as I wasn’t offered a menu, but I could see other customers tucking into some good looking plates of food. Perhaps I just got there too late. Friendly and chatty proprietor which always helps.

Sarah and her staff are so accommodating and friendly, we were given the menus and were spoilt for choice. I had the scampi and chips which was delicious triple fried chips and a generous helping of scampi, the food was cooked to perfection. There was a good choice of sweets and as I was quite full I decided on the ice cream, honeycomb ! Lovely, a generous cup of coffee completed my meal. A very pleasant and delicious meal and I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend this restaurant.

Having visited nearby Hedingham Castle we were looking for somewhere to have lunch and luckily stumbled upon The Old Moot House. What a lovely venue. It was light and airy and we loved sitting in there on a sunny February day. We both ordered the prawn, smoked salmon and avocado salad which was just prefect with fresh, good quality ingredients. It had a lovely dressing on it too. The avocado was in perfect condition and very tasty - not always easy to find. The service was friendly and helpful. The people at the table next to us were celebrating a wedding so we felt a little under-dressed but could understand why they had chosen The Old Moot House restaurant for their special meal.

Stopped here around lunch time Easter Saturday, after a long walk in the surrounding countryside. Only had tea and cake, but when I say 'only' I have to say that the Victoria Sponge was just gorgeous. Lovely and light, the jam was great (I suspect home made) and the cream filling just yummy. It was gone so quickly, I think I inhaled it rather than ate it. My mother would not be proud.

We dined at the restaurant about 3 years ago whilst holidaying in the area. We visited again last night & had an excellent meal, starters, mains & 2 lovely puddings. We can see that the chef & the owners have put the menu together using in season produce. The time between courses was not rushed, we were told to take our time. The staff member was friendly & chatty. We will visit again.

On 1st July we had a family afternoon tea for my sister and brother in law's wedding anniversary. The tea was very good delicious sandwiches, jam and cream with scones and lots of little cakes. I would easily give the tea 10 out of 10. However the gentleman that served us needs to be taught how to address the matter of mask wearing in the restaurant. His reminder to me to wear a mask when not sitting down was blunt and rude and had it not been a special occasion we would have left immediately. This actually spoilt tea whole occasion for me. I would have to think twice before visiting again.

We were staying at the excellent The Pannells Ash bed and breakfast just outside the village and decided to have dinner at The Old Moot House. When we arrived the restaurant was fully booked but the manager kindly managed to squeeze in a table for two which was quickly prepared for us. In the meantime we had a drink in the bar area which had the feel of a wine bar and seemed popular with the locals. There is a good selection on the menu with several specials too. We chose the tower of prawns and the pan fried king prawns as starters. These were both good but the main course was definitely the highlight. We had the skate wing from the specials which was both delicious and very fresh. We also selected the steak which was superb, extremely delicious and cooked exactly as requested. It also had a very tasty mushroom sauce. We enjoyed our meal and would definitely visit again.

I visited with a large group of 30 for Breakfast after my son's wedding. The breakfast was very disappointing. The scrambled eggs were not good and were not just eggs but way to much cream or milk. My particular portion was about a large teaspoon whereas others around me had a reasonable amount, also my wife commented that I also had a very small portion of beans compared to others. My wife ordered a gluten free breakfast, booked in advance and it came out minus the sausage and bizarrely the eggs. So hardly catering for coeliacs if you just delete parts of the meal and we still paid the same. To top off all of this the cost was way too high at £11.95. I was led to believe that it was going to be about £7 and I would have still been disappointed had it been, but to have to pay that amount for what we had was really disappointing

The noise was horrendous. 20 young men shouting at top of their voices in an old building with low ceilings. We were 9 friends sitting together and you couldn't hear the person next to you! I think the restaurant should close to others when this group is in. They said we had been told in advance, we couldn't remember BUT they didn't tell us how noisy it would be. It gave me a headache. When we returned later, we had a few drinks in the bar area before we ate. The menu was surprisingly good, as was the wine list. This is my second review about this restaurant - we thought we would give it another chance. We went with a group of friends, nothing has changed apart from the owners. The menu has not changed in the 5 years that we have lived in the village. The food was poor, two people could not eat their main course and the cost was deducted from the bill. You are served the same vegetables no matter what choice of main you have. We were given Mediterranean vegetables, broccoli and mange tout, all of which were soggy and over-cooked. The potatoes were roasted new potatoes that were so hard and burnt, some you couldn't get your fork into. The vegetables were just thrown on the plate with no regard to presentation. We ordered 3 steaks, 2 medium cooked and 1 cooked rare. The waitress didn't have a clue which was which, when asked if one was rare the reply with a shrug was "well it's the last one out" . The only part of the meal that was ok was the cheese and biscuits. The menu needs updating as do the staff. We will definitely not be returning to this restaurant.

Once seated the food order came promptly and to my delight the plates were hot and staff were attentive and quick to respond when asked for something. Water jugs were already on the table without request and complimentary flavoured breads were provided. Very reasonably priced set menu for two or three courses. This restaurant was taken over by a lovely lady called Sarah just over a year ago and remains my favorite place to eat. The Sunday lunch or more specifically their beef is exceptional. It is without doubt the best beef we have ever had. Other favourite choices of mine include the liver and bacon starter in a Madeira sauce and lamb or duck as a main. I've just read someone saying they had a bad experience and didn't enjoy the duck but I think they must have been incredibly unlucky as I have truely never had a bad meal at this restaurant. This place had been recommended to my husband and so I booked a table for his birthday. The building looks beautiful from the outside but as soon as we entered it smelt of damp, was not warm (yes I know it’s an old building) and we felt like we had gone back in time to the 1980’s. We were welcomed but only in a perfunctory way and seated by the fire to choose from the menu. Our starters were acceptable, the white wine not chilled suitably and we shivered a little as we listened to Now that’s what I call 1980 music in the background. The main course is where it all went wrong. I this I must have chosen badly, an avocado & spinach bake in a stilton sauce. I had never had a cooked avocado before but I like them, and spinach and stilton but the sauce was so overpowering I just felt sick. The accompanying vegetables were cooked well, but the roast potatoes had the appearance and texture of having been reheated. My poor husband had chosen the roast duck, it arrived, roasted for what appeared to be three days, cooked to death with a covering of placid skin – laying in a dark red pool of cherries and sauce. Neither of us could eat the food and we decided to cut our losses and leave. We couldn’t face explaining to the waitress what was wrong, we knew if would not end well as there was nothing they could do to make it better and the evening had been spoilt. She knew were were unhappy with the meal and apologised that we didn't like the food they served. I paid the bill of £60 and we were back in the car on our way home an hour after we arrived.I considered long and hard before putting a negative review on Tripadvisor, especially as other reviews have been quite complimentary but we eat out a lot, we eat good quality food and I have never had an experience like this before – our main courses were truly awful.

A group of friends out for a Christmas lunch with pre-ordered food - should be perfect. The service was OK although the waiting staff got a little flustered, particularly when serving the vegetables. The vegetables were not seasonal, were not seasoned well and the roast potatoes had definitely been re-heated in the microwave and hence were hard and not crispy. The ambience of our lunch was not enhanced by the staff "playing Pickfords" and reorganising the seating arrangements for another pre-booked party while we ate. It used to be "the" place to go for special occasions but, very sadly, not any more!

Booking very easy via the internet.Made very welcome on arrival, nice open fire very cosy. Huge choice on menu from both a la carte and Christmas menu. Exceptional value. Generous portions of quality food well cooked and presented without being too fussy. Service was promt and attentive at a pace that suited. Have dinned here before but for a while. We will certainly return as I feel we have been missing out.

Have not visited for some time and thought we would try under new ownership. Sadly it was rather disappointing. When we arrived we were underwhelmed. The set menu for a Sunday was disappointing and rather dated. In fact the whole decor has to changed little since our last visit there some ten years ago. The staff were pleasant but not very well trained. The first course had some very tired salad in it. The main of lamb was rather dry and needed more gravy which was forth coming when I requested. The puddings were rather 'Brake brothers' than home made and the cheese and biscuits having been ordered by two of our party came as a sharing plate and left a lot to be desired. When we came to pay the bill we had been incorrectly charged. No apology was forthcoming......what a shame. I'm am so sorry but we will not be returning.

We thought we'd just check out the place - the menu, the prices, availability. It turned out we could get a table there and then without pre-booking.The food was indeed very good. It wasn't the fastest service on Earth, but it was worth the wait. The portions were on the generous side. The selection of dishes was above par. Certainly a place where it's worth going again and trying more dishes.

Fabulous Evening. Rare for a Wine Tasting, nobody was selling wine. It was more an appreciation of wine and food.Food was excellent. Fillet of Sole wrapped around a spear of Asparagus with a champagne sauce. New dishes on menu were well received. Loin of Venison and Rosti Potatoes. The finale, A trio of raspberry desserts was really good. New venture for The Moot House. Well done.

Came here for a Sunday lunch to celebrate a family birthday. There is a nice bar seating area where you can read the menu's and order and are not taken to your table until the food is nearly ready, which was a nice touch. The cottage itself is very old with lovely beams. Decor is old fashioned but suits the place nicely. Food was good, nice to have different options to eat other than roasts on the Sunday menu too. Just wish they would have left the vegetables and gravy on the table for us to help ourselves rather than being served them, but other than that a pleasant experience had by all.

My husband and I chose to celebrate our 35th wedding anniversary with an afternoon tea in this delightful restaurant. A very cosy atmosphere and the warm welcome from Sarah made us feel very much at home. The tea was just wonderful, everything home made and so fresh, and beautifully presented too. Plenty to eat and delicious choices of sandwiches and pastries. Very good value for money.

This restaurant is close to the historic Castle and is set in the main street of the village. The menu, whilst fairly traditional, covers most peoples pockets. The food quality and service is of a high standard. Drinks are not expensively marked up, unlike many restaurants.

Enjoyed one of many meals at the Moot last night, and felt compelled to finally get around to writing a review! Myself and some friends were in the restaurant with two large parties and one other small table of customers. The atmosphere in this restaurant is always great as it was last night! My friends and I ordered from the set menu (good value) and were impressed as usual with the quality, presentation and flavours of the food. It's one of those places where you can rely on consistently good food. The service was at its usual high standard, there aren't many places that provide silver service and a personal experience any more. The quality of the service here especially came in to play last night when an already rowdy party (not the usual clientele - who were drinking heavily) decided to make a fuss that their food was cold within seconds of it coming out (from what I could gather from eavesdropping!) they then proceeded to loudly state that they were no longer hungry and generally be loud and bolshy and disagreeable. The waitresses and proprietor handled the situation amazingly whilst still making sure other customers were happy and their needs met. Well done to all involved - and I must add I have been part of large parties and small tables here in the past and have never had a meal anywhere near to cold. Will be back again soon!!

We, my partner and I, enjoyed a very nice evening in this fascinating building with excellent service from Sarah which was probably helped by our being only one of two tables occupied. We had starters of scallops and fresh crab which were both brilliant. Unfortunately the main course was not quite up to the same standard though in fairness I was too full from the starter to do it any justice. My halibut was rather on the dry side but not too bad to complain.Too full for any sweets apart from a 'slides down easily' ice cream which we shared. We had an excellent Viognier wine and Sarah had saved the top to enable us to bring the remainder home.

Start off with table booked for half two and seated straight away but took ages for us to get a menu and be offered any drinks. Once ordered food, we asked for some more drinks the lady must of forgotten as we got the drink ages after being ordered. Table behind us that came in after us was offered bread and we wasn't offered until they were served first which meant we had to choose from leftover bread in the basket. And again we had to pick it out with our hands, so thinking of all the other people's hands that were in the bread basket. Food was good and filling, my husband and I had both empty plates. Once finishing our food, and dishes were taken away, yet again it took the waitressess ages to offer us pudding and give us the menu. On telling us the desserts available the lady started walking off before she had finishing what she was saying. This I felt was very rude. I had a the chocolate cloud cake for dessert but the chocolate sauce that came with it was literally bought childrens decorative chocolate sauce that scatter over ice cream but melted. Wont go back again.

We chose the Old Moot House to celebrate our Ruby Wedding Anniversary, after having celebrated our Silver anniversary there. We booked the restaurant for Sunday lunch for our party. 34 guests were treated to delicious food,(which we pre- ordered), superbly presented with excellent service. Sarah and her team worked hard in the background to ensure there were no hitches. Nothing was too much trouble, We had a perfect day. Thank you to Sarah and her team. This venue is ideal for small private parties and functions and we would thoroughly recommend it.
