I love this pub! So friendly, you can talk to anyone in here, there is an everyday burger menu (the burgers are soooo good!) and then other pop up nights that are awesome too! Sonia, the landlady is super welcoming and loves to chat, this is a place where people go to interact with others, not just stare at their phones! Predominantly it’s a rugby pub, but they will put football on if asked. Other nights include pizza night, open mic, karaoke, live music and bands. There is a nice quiet beer garden out the back that has just had a lovely new decking installed. Well worth a visit if you are in high bickington, a proper country pub with friendly people!

Wish you could give it a minus star review. The owners are so rude, insulting, loud, drunk, "been there, done it, got the t-shirt" type people. The landlord is very insulting to customers, in fact calling a group of young ladies a bunch of dogs as they walked in the door (he hadn't met them before either) was enough for me. How they get these nice reviews I don't know, but can only say the food must be amazing but you would have to wear ear plugs to not hear the swearing etc coming from the vile man's mouth, so can't see that it would be an enjoyable experience. I shall not be going in there again whilst these horrible people are there. Shame as it used to be such a lovely friendly pub.

Came with a few of my family and I was absolutely stunned and disgusted with the language coming out of the mouth of the (obviously alcoholic) so called landlord. The amount of swear words and insults he was making to customers was atrocious. I will never set foot in that place again whilst they are there - although I can't imagine they will have many customers the way he is carrying on. She isn't much better either.

We visited this pub a number of times during our stay in High Bickington and Tracey and Colin couldn’t have made us more welcome, and Harry the waiter was great too. Having recently taken over the owners have renovated the pub and it was tastefully done and the atmosphere very cosy. The beer was well kept and we also ate here too, and the food was excellent, and locally sourced. Thanks for making us feel so welcome.

We found this gorgeous thatched pub whilst recently staying in Devon. The new owners had recently refurbished. The inside feels cosy and homely. The food was great. We ate here on three separate occasions and enjoyed our meals everytime. The owners Tracey and Collin were very welcoming and engaging with all customers. If you are in the area I highly recommend a visit. Jenny & Craig

Funny Pig & Rabbits in back garden, food was similar to meals on wheels. Had the beef, like a flip flop poached in gravy, the leeks were raw and warm. Cost 15quid, laughable. The landlord was robust and friendly and his partner tried very hard to be professional, sadly the food failed for us.

Loved the food here. The owners hadn’t been there long which perhaps explained the service not being great. They were very obliging though and when you go out for a meal the main thing obviously is how good the food is.

Whilst the food tasted ok, the service and cleanliness left a lot to be desired. We were given a scrappy pad to look at what food was on offer. We were handed condiments from the table next to us which had not been cleaned since they had been used previously. Definitely won’t be going back!

This looked like a beautiful, traditional pub serving gastro food - at least according to its website. The inside (apart from the lovely fireplace and impressive wooden beams) sadly let it down. The tables were a bit sticky and didn’t feel like they were given a thorough anti bac clean during this time of Coronavirus. Some of the cutlery was wrapped in flimsy napkins and placed in what can only be described as the type of shelves you would find in a slimline dishwasher. There were some random bits of cutlery in there as well and we didn’t dare touch the vinegar bottle or salt and pepper pots without the certainty they were cleaned after each sitting.

We booked online a few day before the Saturday evening meal for 7.00pm for 4 of us... we arrived at the pub and met a group of about 10 people at the door leaving at 7.00pm.. so went inside and the pub was totally empty apart from one gentleman at the bar... then the owner approached and we said we had book a table go 7.00pm ... we got a grumpy look and he replied “no sorry we haven’t got the kitchen open. So we we won’t be selling any food tonight” and he just didn’t care about he fact we had booked on line on his web page... he said he hasn’t seen any email or had any emails at all for dinner.... he didn’t care about 4 people wanting to give him their money to him for food... the guy at the bar(a customer) was really helpful and trying to give us a selection of good food pubs to feed us for the evening but the governor of the pub really didn’t care a bit... Don’t bother to go to this pub ever..

A huge thank you to Naomi and her lovely sister for a wonderful welcome to this gorgeous pub today. We went with our daughter Kate for lunch and the food was outstanding. Kevin and Kate had fish and chips which looked devine . I had read a about the seafood lasagne in a review,so was looking forward to trying it and boy it did not disappoint at all. It was heavenly, sauce was beautiful and, being one who never finishes a meal, I ate the lot! Fabulous tasting fish, the king prawn and mussels were beautiful. We celebrated our wedding in Devon and we had our evening bash at The Old George. Considering the fact we aren’t locals, absolutely everybody made us feel welcome. Sisters Naomi and Becky ensured all of our needs were met. The food was outstanding and the room was dressed in line with our wedding theme. We hired a local band and everybody (family and locals) had a crackin time. Not only is the pub great but our experience highlights how brilliant Devonians are. Worth a visit.

Was recommended by the B&B we were staying at. Had already booked a table. Staff were both friendly and working very hard to serve drinks in a busy bar and food to several tables. Regrettably we had issues with the temperature of my wife's starter and our main course. We only mentioned this to the waitress when she collected our plates. She was very apologetic and said she would mention it to the chef. We have since been offered to return for a free meal but as we were only visiting the area for a wedding we were unable to accept what I feel is a genuine offer. A good pub that does good food, don't feel our experience was typical.

We have been to this pub on and off for thirty years. Now it is on. Locals around the bar a bit noisy but that is what yokels are for. Very good beer and wine selection, This time one had Fisherman's Pie (excellent) other Pork Loin (little roundels and a bit dry). Copious servings of potatoes and vegetables. Local sources cut down on food miles but not on visitor miles from the crowded southeast to the sparsely populated and glorious southwest. Come you townies and get a feel of the rural idyll.

We took our kids for tea here whilst camping in High Bickington recently. Definitely had eyes bigger than our tummies when ordering an extra chips. They had run out of the kids burger which meant ordering of the adult menu, which was a shame and a bit pricey with 3 kids but the food was great. The seafood lasagne was delicious if a little too creamy for my taste and the kids enjoyed their meals, plus we were able to take the leftover chips home (I know! Leftover chips?!) so that was a bonus!

Proper traditional old English pub. Went with the family after a wedding nearby the day before. I chose the beef, but it was a bit tough so with hindsight should have gone for the pork. On a short weekend birthday break we popped in here on the off chance with no booking, they were not overly busy so fitted us in with ease. The menu is pretty standard and keeps things simple with a limited choice. I opted for the deconstructed seafood lasagne with shamphire and greens, my partner had a steak. We ordered quickly but found the 45 minute wait too long for what we had ordered (steak was asked for rare) - when it arrived the Lasagne was super hot but the samphire & greens were a measly portion and stone cold. The Lasagne was bland and drowning in cheese sauce which overpowered the seafood. My partner's steak was ok but again, the chips and veg were cold. We would have complained but we were ravenous by this time (gone 8pm) so just ate and left. Very disappointing meal for my birthday and would've loved a pudding for a birthday treat but didn't want to wait another 40 minutes for a rubbish pudding! I've noticed other reviews are favourable for this place so maybe they were having an off night but based on our experience, I wouldn't recommend eating here and we won't visit again.

My wife and I visited High Bickington last year and this pub was lovely.....friendly bar staff, friendly locals, and a wonderfully welcoming landlord who was also the chef, with great pub food, great prices and big portions, however this year when we visited it was totally different. We were staying for a week locally and on our first night decided yo visit this pub again, what a disappointment!!!! Unfortunately the lovely landlord had passed away end of last year. There is now a manager running it, think they need to change this manager!!!! We ordered some food, ok it tasted ok but very small portions for the price we were paying, and we also ordered a side dish of seasonal vegetables...what we got was two different measly portions of vegetables, it was not worth £2.95 at all. The bar staff was one of the girls we had met last year and still very friendly, which was nice. We decided that we would not be eating there again during our stay and instead found other places to eat which even though one of us had to drive it was still better than eating here again.

Visited this pub as was staying for week locally as a party of 10 people. It was the nearest to our holiday home and easily walkable so we felt we would be able to patronise it regularly over the course of the week. However, despite wifi being evident on our devices and locals at the bar clearly linked onto the wifi, we were denied the passcode or access. Coupled to this we didn't receive the warmest of welcomes. What a shame as we would have visited again several times over the course of the week. Fortunately for us, we found another pub in Umberleigh who welcomed us with open arms.

If you want great food in a local's watering hole then look no further than " The Old George Pub " Doug and his staff will see to it you have a fantastic experience. All the food is prepared and cooked on the premises by Doug himself and each meal is cooked to order. Due to this you may have to wait a little bit before the food arrives but when it does you will be delighted with the taste. You can always have a real ale out of the barrel or some cider while you wait for your food. All the staff are very friendly and they also welcome dogs. They have a dog of their own, a lovely spaniel who is also very friendly. We moved down here 10 years ago from Surrey and have used the pub both for food and drink and have NEVER been disappointed. They made us feel very welcome and it has been the same ever since. The pub has a skittle alley which is nearly always available and a dart board so you can throw a few arrows and have a tipple to pass the time. There was one other table dining whilst we were there so it wasn't like it was busy. Main courses were moderate but nothing to sing about. By the end of our first night there it felt like our local. We are returning to the area again this year and will definitely be returning to The Old George Inn.

Brilliant, good value, lovely fresh food. Would definitely go again! We came in very late and had fresh vegetables cooked just for us. We were very lucky and had the last 6 roast lunches. No wonder they run out so quickly.

Typical inn from the medieval period. Very traditional, plain but warm, good beer, value for money food and a real, friendly landlord. I should imagine this is a good social centre for the natives.

We were staying over in rose cottage and decided to visit this pub for Sunday lunch. We had called in on the Friday evening to ask for direction and werent made to feel particularly welcome, and werent going to go back but my parents said otherwise.I am glad we went back I enjoyed my meal,I had halloumi salad it was lovely and huge! My dad had one of the pies and he said we could've all shared it,but he did love it!The chap serving was very nice there was quite a long wait for our good though. One final gripe is the bottle of wine Wasnt chilled.Overall I would recommend and would return, certainly for the convienience if you're in the village.

Very friendly pub, we were made to feel very welcome from the moment we stepped inside, by staff and locals alike. Also nice to find a pub which allows dogs in the bar.The beer and food were good. The pies were superb but could just have done to be a little bit hotter for our liking. We will return.

This pub was recommended to us.The atmosphere is pure olde pub on arrival - dog, blackboard, friendly bar staff, sofa etc.But the food was nothing special, indeed it was disappointing. Overly salty gammon, vegetables never served, cajun chicken was effectively a poached breast with a bit of dreary sauce and plain dull salad.Frankly please don't hold your breath, food as fuel but not worth the money - no matter how reasonable it is.What a shame as expectations had been hopeful. Stay at home or drink but don't eat unless flavourless food plonked on a plate is your 'thing'.

The van runs a generator all day to power the van, noisy and polluting. must be a greener way to run a business.

Fantastic food and service! Hidden gem of a pub which I know the locals won’t want anyone knowing! Best burger I’ve had in a long long time :)

We have heard that a new chef is just starting work here. Perhaps this explains our sorry excuse for a meal. For the record we have had several excellent if pricey meals at this restaurant. This meal was pricey but a million miles from excellent. There was a weird-tasting buttersquash soup oddly paired with a far from fresh hard pork pie apparently found in the freezer, a tiny square of cheese and a portion of chutney. Did they run out of bread? Apparently knives were also in short supply because we ended up sharing one between us. There was an oddly flavoured sausage roll type thing with almost raw cabbage, fried carrots in skins and a separate dish from which three lonely roast potatoes contemplated this culinary car crash - and which were the only pleasantly edible items. All this in a restaurant formerly well-regarded for its excellent home-grown vegetables. We felt ill afterwards. We noted during our visit although the gardens were quite busy with family visitors few of them chose to eat in the restaurant. We did wonder why - and now we know. Rosemoor is not a cheap day out and hard-pressed families are not going to add to the expense of visiting the gardens with a bad expensive meal. Other restaurants are available and sadly we can't consider coming back unless we see clear evidence of improvement in Tripadvisor reviews.

Ate here twice. Food is reasonably priced. However, no fish in the fish pie and I am 100% sure that our fish n chips came from the local chippy. No way was this cooked on site. Another meal had totally different chips served. And I definitely wouldn’t order from whatever chippy it was! Staff v nice, service good and some music we heard was absolutely fantastic. We would return but will be selective in what we order.

Room was spacious. Food was lovely, landlady was extremely helpful and welcoming, she cooked a late meal and early breakfast out of hours. Only reasons this place gets 5 stars is because i cant give 7. Pub dog is named Devon, he is a cutie
