The Old Gaolhouse in Winchester

Breakfast in Winchester and The Old Gaolhouse was our destination. We were in Winchester to visit the Christmas Market and it was an absolute treat, once we'd got through the throng of Santas all dressed up and racing through the streets. The Gaol is a Wetherspoons pub and as such we knew the score... Our breakfast arrived and it was standard fair. Tepid bacon, warm baked beans, nuclear hot hash browns and barely toasted toast. It was all there. The sausage stood alone, cooked to perfection and looking all the prouder for it. A porky sergeant major, directed his under trained soldiers to go into battle. The pub was average enough to merit a visit and yet totally unremarkable.

Although the place is conveniently near the centre of the city, this Wetherspoons is dull, dirty and depressing. I visited for breakfast and had the large breakfast offering. The meal arrived, far from hot, and without any butter for the toast. - there’d been a problem with deliveries. The tables were sticky! It seems that they haven’t been cleaned thoroughly for a long time. The chair coverings and carpets in great need of refurbishment. I gave it a score of 2 because of the staff who, despite the early hour and their depressing surroundings, were bright and cheerful.

Busy around 2pm Friday 16/08. Good polite service and engaging staff. 2 meals inc drinks promptly served and after that we were on our way to catch our train. Thanks

The Old Goalhouse is a regular for breakfast and drinks at varying times of the day. Admittedly we know better 'spoons but we have always been happy here. True with the amount of students the average age is younger but we've never experienced any problems. The service is always good and polite. The food and drinks range is comparable to all 'spoons.During the day it's common to see students quietly sat with a drink, often coffee, studying. In the evening there's often groups but never OTT.

Winchester is an expensive city and it was a bit of relief to find this Wetherspoons in an ancient building - the city's historic gaolhouse. Prices are reasonable, the service quick and the food, in spite of a number of poor reviews, actually turned out to be more than acceptable.

This place is going to win the worst Spoons in England award. A ropey selection of beers and then only two available. A very poor show all round.

Walked in after a very long drive and had googled where the spoons was. Got a pint and was making friendly chat with a local when the staff member barged through me. I'm 6 5 so was hardly going to fall over but reminded her of manners. Then refused service for upsetting staff!! There's a zillion cameras in your pub please review. Complaint incoming unless I get an apology. Disgusting

We went last Tuesday for steak and wine. It's the story we're all used to by now : smaller portions, higher prices. Unfortunately our steaks were inedibly tough. Mine was just 8 ounces of pure gristle, and I left it untouched on the plate. My wife's peppercorn sauce was cold and had to be scooped out of the sauceboat like peanut butter - a new experience for us. The dining area was packed with female scream-agers, all so-called 'students' and all very drunk on tray after tray of tequila shots and jugs of a liquid that could have been Toilet Duck. So if you enjoy inedible food, and girls stinking of vomit and cheesy chips, then look no further. You've found Paradise.

It’s a wetherspoons. The sandwich and the fish and chips were what we expected. Service was quick. The kegs were not off. A good experience Only negative is that some of the packs of mustard expired in 2023

I walked into the bar with a friend, we were having a conversation on our way to the bar. We were smartly dressed. We did absolutely nothing wrong however that didn't stop the bar staff from immediately refusing to serve us, making a false assumption we were too drunk which we weren't. I had one drink in the space of 2 hours at another establishment prior to visiting weatherspoons. However I will admit my friend had more than me, but she was still walking and talking just fine and didn't do anything to warrant this kind of treatment. The manager, Anna, did absolutely nothing to help. We didn't even get to say a single word to the bar staff before instantly being refused. Only positive is that the lady refusing us did it respectfully. I'd understand if we were stumbling and a disrupting the peace but we were just having a laugh. As soon as the lady behind the bar began giving her speech I immediately left. I didn't even let her finish nor did I argue it. Horrible treatment, especially when we didn't break any rules. So if you go there best be sure to act 100% perfect or you'll get refused. No room for laughs there! Not allowed to be happy there! Thier loss as we would've spent a lot there. Business lost some good customers and money that night. Which is a shame for them considering how dead it was, no wonder, seeing as they just refuse everyone. Never again. I'll be sure to let everyone know when recommending places to go in Winchester to not bother with weatherspoons as they judge you and refuse you without reason.

Always visit when in Winchester, for breakfast as well as drinks. Last time, (a year ago), I was a little disappointed as the, usually good, breakfast was not great and chairs were very worn. Pleasingly this time, breakfast was great, really good and many seats have been recovered or replaced.

Usual Wetherspoons, great beer at fair prices and acceptable food for the money. We visited en route to Southampton Cruise Terminal just before xmas. Although all of Winchester was rammed, we managed to find a parking place and a table here. It was very busy but our food arrived piping hot within the time stated when I ordered. We all know it's not haute cuisine but a reasonable meal for the money.

Busy as always, and staff just keeping on top of it. As things calmed down service did not improve! Very scruffy staff who didn’t seem very interested in their jobs. One chap had long hair that was not tied back at all and he kept playing with it and then delivering food and drinks. It took 10 mins to get mugs and then later it took 10 mins to get a Guinness and there were plenty of staff behind the bar, and they were not busy. It’s a shame because we love Wetherspoons and visit them all around the country. Not one of the best here sadly.

We popped in for a pint. Now I like a ‘spoons, and I know that there is a bit of a gulf between them and a spot of fine dining, especially in Winchester where the average punter might want a cheap pint with their lobster. But honestly, this place just doesn’t do it. The main issue is getting served. Unless you’re a local lad, you’re at the back of the queue. It’s really annoying to get ignored FIVE times by the bar staff, especially as those who barged in barely seemed out of puberty and were not challenged for ID. In fairness, maybe the bar staff knew them, but I didn’t see a single ID challenge whilst being ignored.

I had fried buttermilk chicken burger . Chicken taste was DISGUSTING!!! Taste was washing liquid, literally DISGUSTING!! Definitely won't go there again!! They offered me free drink(funny) I asked them give me the other meal they said I can't get the other one because the I have alread started eating..Of course otherwise how I gonna will knows the taste.. well done Winchester wetherspoon!

Typical spoons. We just stopped off for a drink before continuing on for lunch. Husband pint of coors was off , barmaid abrupt, no apology, just , ‘what do You want ‘? . Obviously missed the days training at charm school. Didn’t get Monday Club prices so presumably they don’t do it anymore. Cheap but staff not so cheerful!

Once again, a J.D Witherspoons house has lived up to expectations staff friendly food great and very quick. Only criticism I have was one of the male staff went to the toilet the same time as me and didn't wash his hands properly good job he was just collecting dirty dishes

This is a Wetherspoons so the menu was the same as similar pub restaurants across the country. However, there was a good selection with many offers available that included drinks (some of these offers vary each day). My friend and I ordered mains, both of which were well cooked and, most importantly, hot. My friend then suggested we had desserts and, although we were given a 20 minute waiting time, both desserts arrived within five minutes. My only concern was the actions of other customers that went unchallenged by the staff who were present. At a nearby table, a couple with a two or three year old child were also having lunch. The child was refusing to sit on a chair, so the parents allowed her to sit on the table and eat her pizza. This is not only ignorant, but extremely unhygienic. I know the tables are cleaned after each customer, but there is a huge difference between wiping down tables and cleaning where a young child has sat ... or an adult for that matter. I really think the staff should have told the parents that sitting their child on a table was completely unacceptable and, if the child didn't comply, they should have asked the parents and child to leave. This is the only reason I am giving 4/5 which seems unfair on the venue overall, but I do feel very strongly that this was allowed to go unchallenged.

Terrible service, food was cold, my friends steak wasn't cooked properly and was so cold that she had to send it back, twice as brought the wrong meal and I was waiting 20 longer than anyone else so had to eat on my own. When I did finally get my food after being brought the wrong meal my steak was almost inedible as it was mainly gristle. There was no flair or style to our meals, i think the chef should be ashamed. Staff were rude and unhelpful, when I went to discuss problem with one member he said so what's your problem, explained and was told if I wanted my money back I wouldn't get my food. Terrible Terrible service. I don't think I've ever been anywhere so appalling in 43 years of my life. Will never go back there and will tell others to as well. Wish I could give no stars.

A good Pub IMO. I had two breakfasts and two afternoon meals here. A good JD Wetherspoons pub with standard layout and excellent pricing. Good food, good beer, good service.

In Winchester on a business trip, spoon’s is always a good call. Ordered a full size grill + pint at the bar, food arrived in less than 10 mins. Onion rings were a tad greasy but the rest was spot on. Good value meal

A couple of weeks ago the food was cold and a sorry for herself looking blonde girl in the Wetherspoons black chef suit was drinking almost the same time, she might have finished her shift before we ordered food but who knows.

Always visit The Gaolhouse when in Winchester. Usually find a decent ale, this time a red ale " Your Mother wouldn't like it". As usual had breakfast but not quite so good this time and many of the chairs are in desparate need of replacing.

This bar is a disgrace. The woman serving behind the counter had the charisma of a toad. The staff do not understand that please and thank you are vital ESSENTIALS in the customer service industry. The toilet cubicle lock was BROKEN! No privacy or dignity...

This spoons is one of the dirtiest ive been too, its worser than the one in basingstoke now. The food wasn't cooked very well. Seems like its poorly managed and run by people who are mates rather than working colleagues.

Im not typically one to complain as due to working in hospitality myself i understand it can be stressful. However me and my friend came in for some brunch only to have to wait 20 mins for our pepsi and a furter 15 mins for 2 burgers, i will add this occasion was the quietist ive ever seen spoons! When our food finally arrived the server who I believe is called Patrick procedded to put our food on the table, it wasnt till he walked away that we realised one of the burgers were wrong, he then came back with another burger and when we told him we hadnt ordered that however this burger is wrong he rolled his eyes and walked away without saying anything. He came out a few minutes later and told me that i shouldnt have started eating my OWN food until he had sorted the issue even though my meal was correct. He then proceeded on basically saying the wouldnt take the wrong burger back unless we hadnt touched it. You generally know what you're getting with Wetherspoons - cheap and cheerful. This was cheap, and the staff were admittedly cheerful, but we weren't. Even by Wetherspoons standards, the tables and menus (when you could find some) were stickier than having chewing gum in your hair, and food slow and cold. And this despite it only being quite early in the day, rather than the result of a day's opening.

On steak night they have no steaks, on curry night they have no curry, and on fish night they run out of fish at lunchtime. The service is dire and the staff poorly-trained. Also the place is generally run-down and unclean. I would not recommend it to anyone visiting Winchestet.

I wish I had read the reviews before we visited today. We always frequent Wetherspoons wherever we go as food and service always exemplary. Not so today. According to Covid Regs a member of staff should be at the door to ensure masks are being worn, hands are sanitised and Track and Trace adhered to. We waited for a while and then after doing all above, decided to find our own table. I then had to find our own menus and also had to find a member of staff to find out what the Tuesday steak special was all about. She was totally unaware of what I was talking about and didn't even have the courtesy to go and ask someone else for assistance. After going back to our table we waited for some time and when no one came to take our order, we got fed up with waiting and walked out. Shocking customer service.

The staff are rude and poorly-trained. The service is careless and unprofessional. On a steak night they had run out of steak by 6:00pm, and the shift manager's helpful comment was that we should have got there earlier. A visit to this pub is a most unpleasant experience, and we are unable to recommend the place. We are both 24 years old and work in hospitality, so we know whereof we speak. Staff training is desperately needed here; they should be made to understand that they are not there to serve their 'uni' friends and ignore everyone else. Note to area manager: Pull your finger out.

had the sweetest bartender called Sarah, she was so sweet and nothing was too much for her. Whatever spoons is paying her is not enough!! She went above and beyond!

I am beyond disgusted at the staff in this establishment. They are rude, insensitive and downright disgusting. They lack a common understanding of mental health and how it can affect individuals on a day to day basis and lack any kind of empathy one would expect to come across in the modern day. This is a great pub/ diner but it has become too popular and is often very crowded and noisy, more suitable for the younger/ student crowd.

This place is tatty, it is dirty, and seems to be full of noisy youngsters gazing at their phones. We normally enjoy going to Wetherspoon's, but not this one. Probably best avoided.

I called in on Tuesday for lunch. I ordered my food and drink on the Wetherspoons App and both arrived very quickly to the usual Wetherspoons standard.I couldn't see any menus on any of the tables around me, so am I not sure of the reason for that.Another Wetherspoons crossed off my list.

Three of us dined here on a Sunday evening. We don’t expect fine dining from a Wetherspoon pub, but the standard of the hygiene and food really was appalling. One of us had a pizza which was fine. My mushroom risotto with pulled chicken was crispy round the edges, chewy in the middle, luke warm with stone cold chunks of chicken on top, not pulled or carved, just chucked on. The All Day Brunch was also luke warm and overcooked, so the beans were dried out, the black puddings (for which we paid extra) burnt and hard, and the chips rock solid. The table, chairs, carpet were all filthy. We had to ask for milk for the self-serve coffee station, which was also filthy. Yet we had to ask the girl waiting tables to leave it when she tried to remove plates while one of our party was still eating; her time would have been far better served cleaning tables, chairs and the coffee station than rudely removing plates from a table where diners are still eating. We will never return. It was dirt cheap, but the ingredients cost the same whether they’re cooked well or burned and then left to get cold.

Very easy to be dismissive of Wetherspoons but we had a really good breakfast here. 2 of us had cooked breakfasts and unlimited coffee. The bacon and sausages were very good quality. The dishwasher didn't do the best job on the cutlery but we were able to wipe it down without issue and there was evidence that this wasn't probably unusual because staff were busy cleaning fixtures and fittings. Am very likely to come back again for breakfast.

We went for a late breakfast and it seemed that most of the food had been sat there most of the morning.The eggs were freshley prepared, but everything else didn't taste fresh.The sausages were missing from my plate so had to ask for them!

Wetherspoons is always good, but the experience a the Old Gaolhouse in Winchester didn't meet usual expectations.It was still "OK", but not "great" as normal. The atmosphere was vibrant and "normal" for a Wetherspoons, but the member of staff who took the order appeared "to be distracted" and the service was far from what was expected. The food was OK, but some parts were over-cooked (eg. the burger) and some under-cooked (eg. chips) which is unusual for Wetherspoons which is normally very consistent.

After having to wait for 45 minutes, and reminding the staff, when it arrived the bacon was black, hard and burnt, the eggs were crispy and hard, the hash browns resembled Lego bricks, but the baked beans were cold. Its the worst meal we've ever had, but the bar was busy by now and had no time to talk.

Been in many Wetherspoon establishments around the UK and have never been in one so full of obviously underage 'kids' drinking alcohol. Called in on Wednesday night at approximately 2145 and it seemed fairly lively and noisy but all seemed ok from the bar. It wasn't until we got our drinks and went to find a table further in that we entered what can only be described as a school drinking den. Not sure if Wetherspoons operate the 25 policy but at least 10 of the 20+ kids present didn't even look 15! This is not just my opinion but that of the other four people that I was with.

This is the worst wetherspoons I have ever been to for service. Totally disorganised, a waitress gave two meals to table next to us, it was not their order, after a lot of discussion she took them away, wandering around eventually gave to the right table, they commented on the wait! and it was not very warm!!

We went to The Goalhouse in Winchester for breakfast yesterday 30th Nov. We ordered on the ap and had our mugs for hot drinks. I queued for 20 min for coffee as one machine broken. But our breakfast took 1 hour to come to us . My husbands arrived minus the eggs and mine arrived with poached eggs stone cold. We are so used to our local in Caerphilly being such good service it was such a surprise to realise some Wetherspoons are rubbish at service. Wasted 90 minutes on a weekend break

Called in here for lunch while xmas shopping. menus hard to find and when i ordered was told 30 mins for food for a jacket potato with salad and 1 burger meal and fries.At the same time ordered 1 lager and 1 water which duly arrived with a hot glass!!!After 35 mins waiting i inquired how long our food would be and was told that it was a 45 minute wait instead of 30 mins and should not be much longer.The food arrived only for the jacket potato to be at best warm and the salad served on a hot plate!!!.How disappointing.

Stopped here for breakfast one Weds morning when in town for work. Served quickly and ordered the eggs benedict. It didn’t take long to arrive and the eggs were perfectly cooked with lovely runny yolks. It is very good value, you know what you are getting and this place was fine. No issues, good service and it did the job. No problem with this and would return.

My friends and I went out for a few drinks before going else where. Had a couple of drinks before we got there. Bouncer on door said we weren't allowed in and needed to go get a coffee despite us only having a few drinks before hand. Very rude and intimidating. Business lost money because of him.

Ordeed through the app and waited for a meal which came and looked dry . The accompanying drink came 5 minutes AFTER the meal.

Very convenient boozer, visiting Winchester whilst in the south for the great South Run & this pub was a good option for drinking beer as it was pretty much half the price of the other places, across the road £8.50 for 2 beers, in this joint it’s £4.50, one drink was off but staff were happy to change it to a different brand at no extra cost, will be back in Winchester in February & will be chugging a few cold beers in this boozer again.

I came to the old gaolhouse with a couple of friends and we ordered our drinks upon the application. The service was bloody slow and we were sobering up which was an unfathomable problem for us on the night. 1/10 for effort you useless pricks

Had breakfast here for three days. Each time they forgot something from the order. Beans on all days were cold. Good value though. Had to skip tea as everyday the milk was off.

Hi,me and my girlfriend visited on a lovely couple of sunny days in September,good that they had some tables outside that we used,sat inside one evening and had a lovely curry,great choice of drinks,better clientele than most weatherspoons,very clean inside and out ,no sticky tables like most weatherspoons have which is very good,nice vibe,(only downside is that when ordering from the app which is what we do all the time there is a long wait for drinks, highly recommend this establishment.many thanks Tony and Jo, Brighton.

Popped in for a late lunch on Saturday. Empty tables were all clear and actually wiped clean. Ordered via app, drinks were speedy but over half an hour wait for food. Ordered pizzas which were tadty and worth the money. Happy when visiting the toilets that we didnt have a long walk !

A sunday evening visit found it quiet, with quick efficient service of decent food and a good selection of well kept beers and gins.
